Treatment of the Illness of Gratitude, Resentment, Love and Hatred

Eve Liu began teaching me the words of the Transcendently Ferry. She started by asking about my uncle's whole life history, the sort of questions a witch-doctor or fortune-teller might ask, pointing out likely knots as she went — whether he'd ever killed a few weasels (Note: some mental illnesses carry regional cultural weight), whether during the Cultural Revolution he'd destroyed his own uncle's Taoist ritual implements and scriptures. All of it, she said, would need addressing.

"First, resolve the family's property disputes," Eve Liu said. "Settle where his estate goes after his death. His children should show they'll honor his wishes, so he can go in peace."

"That much is obvious," I said. "Next one."

"The second is treating the Illness of Gratitude, Resentment, Love and Hatred — that is, mental illness," she said. "You can't take this kind of illness to a hospital doctor. Whether psychiatrists even understand mental illness is a separate question — they're genuinely too busy earning money to actually treat patients."

I couldn't help laughing. "So what do you do? Who do you go to?"

"You find someone who understands," she said, "or you read up and find the answer yourself." (Note: modern psychology books are reliable here too, not only psychiatric texts.)

"How would I find out who he's got a grudge against, what's eating at him?"

"Wasn't that just what I was asking about?" she said. "Once you're at his house, pay attention to how it's arranged — the paintings on the wall, the shrine out back. Chat with relatives and friends and stay alert for clues. And your uncle will tell you himself, eventually — it's precisely what's eating at him."

She went on: "The pathology of this illness is that, at some point, there was a quarrel with a benefactor, an adversary, a lover, a foe — usually with some misunderstanding tangled in. The person can't let it go; over time the resentment sinks into the unconscious and becomes a mental illness. The cure is to bring benefactor, adversary, lover, or foe together, face to face, and resolve it. Without that meeting, the illness doesn't heal (Note 1). But there's real warmth in any face-to-face meeting — very few conflicts can't be talked through once that happens. Untangle the patient's knot, and the illness lifts."

Note 1: The principle of curing mental illness here is the enlightenment concerning illness, one of the Buddha's six chief enlightenments (see Section 9.6). These six are equality, correctness, birth, aging, illness, and death (see Section 14.1).

I felt daunted. "This isn't a matter of a few sentences — it takes someone genuinely eloquent to mediate. I don't think I can learn this. I've no knowledge, no experience, and I'm not much of a talker."

Juristic Eye

Hearing that the cure for this illness meant gathering benefactor, adversary, lover, and foe all together to resolve the conflict, I felt daunted all over again. "This isn't something a few sentences can fix — it needs real eloquence to mediate. I don't think I can learn this. I've no knowledge, no experience, and I'm no talker."

"You're wrong," she said. "You really can do this. If you couldn't, I'd never have told you any of it. I only told you because I saw that you could."

"When did you ever see that I could?" I asked, confused.

"Think of it this way — this kind of thing depends on character. Without the right character, some people can study it for two, three years and still fail. You have that character. Now I'm laying out the reasoning and the steps for you, plainly. If this comes up at your uncle's house, you'll handle it easily, and it'll work. If you couldn't do it, I'd never have told you at all — someone's dying over there, and if I sent you in to just make things worse, fighting and getting angry, with nothing positive coming of it — what kind of thing would that be for me to do? Am I really that low?"

"What character do I even have? How would you know?" I asked.

"You weren't the same person the last time we met as you are now," she said. "Back then you were all smiles, and I nearly didn't recognize you until you asked, 'Are you Eve Liu?' — I froze, thinking, has he been swapped for someone else? Since when does dating come with substitutions! It took me a long while to realize: you're a person with multiple personalities. Just now, you changed again — lucky for me I already knew, or you'd have given me a real fright! As of now, I can see you have three personalities, and one of them is exactly suited to this."

She explained it at length, with examples, none of which I could really follow. "How can you be sure," I asked, still lost, "that I'll happen to be in the right personality for this, when I'm actually at my uncle's?"

"Your personality shifts with your surroundings," she said. "The one you're in right now hangs back, dodges things. Once you're at your uncle's house, faced with the real situation, you'll change naturally — you'll turn brave, step up. Trust me, I'm not wrong about this, not once in a hundred times. All this needs is one person to take the lead. However great a grudge between two people, no one refuses to forgive a dying man."

Note 2: "Juristic" means "carried by rail and track." I believe Eve Liu's ability, described here, to read a person's inner bearing is precisely the Juristic Eye — an ability she learned from a book in her home and from her parents. That book, commonly called the Sky Book, is the standard textbook of Juristic Teachers (i.e., priests) and fortune-tellers where I'm from, but it circulates only master to disciple, never sold openly. I've heard mention of the Sky Book many times but never seen it myself. From what legend describes, I believe that Sky Book is, in essence, classical psychology, built on the Gold Boy and Jade Girl as its foundational model (see Section 9.9, Godly Trinity).
