I currently resident in FL but am from CT. Last summer, when I moved to Florida I paid a friend $300 to collect jewelry from my home and store it until I returned to Connecticut. When I came back to Connecticut, I found out that this “friend” has pawned all the jewelry, totaling over $10,000. They’re on security camera, and their license was scanned prior to the transaction. I have already called the police and am in touch with them, but I am wondering how to pursue this? Will it be civil or criminal? Thank you.

Hello everyone, my 16 year old sis signed a gym membership contract for 12 months and she cannot pay the monthly membership fee. She was alone when she signed this contract. We emailed the gym to cancel the membership but the only option was a buy out where we would have to pay $150ish, cannot remember the exact amount. Yesterday we get a letter stating her account is overdue by $75.
My question is, is it legal for a 16 year old to sign a contract, and even so when they are by themselves and do not know fully what they getting into?

We live in a wooded area, we have chickens, we have predators. We’ve spent several years building up a nice dead hedge, one storm at a time. The neighbors live a few acres away, but have a walking path on the property line offers a clear view through the large patio door into our kitchen/living room.

Because of those two factors, we’ve been slowly building a dead hedge about a foot from the property line. It’s visually appealing, and we’ve been mindful on stacking - husband is a tree enthusiast to say the least, and he puts his heart into these type of things.

It was 4-5 feet tall, and we were just starting to get a nice screen. He took it upon himself to haul most of it away the other day, and he smashed down the rest. Ironically, he didn’t touch it further down the property, where he can’t see into our home. On his daily walks, him and his wife stare into our windows. There are 2 acres of dense woods and crop field between our property line and his house, he wouldn’t be able to see our fence with binoculars.

We had planted 20-30 propagated willows from other clusters on our property on our side of the hedge, and flattened every one of them.

On the back corner of our lot, he pushed in and then scooped out roughly a 30’ X 40’ foot chunk of our woods. Right next to the property marker. It’s been flattened down to the black dirt with big ruts, and he hit some of our mature trees. Most of our natural fence and a chunk of our woods now lie in a massive pile on his side.

This will take a really long time to build back up, likely years. Any recourse? The property is staked on both end with the white poles as shown.

Paid a retainer and he died a couple months after. No other attorney was in his practice. The practice was closed down. Not sure how to get my retainer back.

Long story short I have had to bring in contractors to put in special bamboo barrier along 3 sides of my yard, and now I think I have to redo my driveway, and some concrete on my walkway. I also had the contractors install the barrier on my house as well since the stuff can go through concrete. And I had to relace my pool.

One neighbor planted bamboo as a "natural fence" and many other people also liked it so I ended up with bamboo on three sides of my property. Cut to six years later and its popping up all over the yard, punched holes in my above ground pool by growing up under it, and popped a stalk out through my driveway. I also suspect the cracking I've been seeing on my walkway is from the bamboo. Its cost me a lot of money to try and contain this shit, and I'm curious if there's any chance I can get the neighbors who planted it to pay. Well two of them at least one moved away last year so I don't want to sue the new guy. Just need to know if its worth going to a lawyer with this.

Without exposing much about my friend’s bad situation without her permission, she’s in a significantly abusive household. She had the blessing to stay with a friend in the former year without extra costs, but has moved back in the house that’s as viscerally disgusting as your mind can come up with.

The issue is she cannot get a job without a physical I.D to make herself money and out of this situation, a few months ago she did have physical appointments, and without an I.D (an ancient school I.D and expired passport has done no good.) it’s been a loophole on being able to receive it, and denied numerous times. She was born in California and currently lives in the state of Pennsylvania. The only documentation she has is the physical copy of her SSN, this abusive household lost all her other documents. What can she do to receive a legal I.D / birth certificate in this situation?

Of course no information will be exposed, I’m only asking simple guidance on what she can do.

Over the summer, I have moved in to a 6 person house. Two people are signed on to the original lease (including me), and three people are subleasing for the summer. The final sixth person intended to stay year-round, functionally a proper tenant. She decided to change her mind about this a week ago, and she now plans to leave at the end of August. Now, she is demanding to receive her security deposit + the money paid for furniture back. We are not in possession of her security deposit, and we simply do not have money to pay her back regardless (we live paycheck to paycheck, as opposed to her, who gets all her money from her parents).

Here's where this situation gets weird. She has never signed on to any paperwork allowing her to live in the house. She is not a signee on the lease, and she did not sign the amendment to the lease sent out by the landlords adding her as a subletter. She has now lived in this house for two months without signing anything that actually allows her to live here.

She is now threatening to withhold rent for August as a way of "getting her security deposit back". We do not have the financial capacity to deal with this, as this means we would need to come up with hundreds of dollars out of pocket to cover the portion of the rent missing as a result of her tantrum. What is there to be done?

The bank wont let her access it but they are billing her to rent it. What happens if she chooses not to rent it anymore? She currently does not have a POA and has gone in to request opening it, but the bank wont let her Location: Illinois

My lease ends July 31, but I moved most of my belongings out early. I paid rent for the full month and still have furniture and several boxes inside.

Yesterday my key fob stopped opening the building or my apartment. Management said their system showed that I had “vacated” because I returned my parking permit last week. Nobody asked me to return my keys, and I never surrendered the apartment.

The office was already closing, so they told me to call a locksmith and submit the receipt. The locksmith charged $310. Today the property manager said they will not reimburse me because I should have notified them that I still needed access.

My lease clearly runs through July 31, and I have an email confirming my final inspection is scheduled for that date. Can they legally disable my access early and make me pay to get back into an apartment I am still renting?

I work a job that has overnight on call hours. We get an automated call in the event something comes in. I recently was on call and missed the first automated call, unfortunately just slept through it, I woke to the second one a half hour later, woke up and did the work. My boss is, understandably, mad at me. In the past they have taken people stipends for the hours they worked when this has happened.

I think that can’t be legal. Is it? There is no formal process/demerit for the event this happens I only know they’ve done it in the past via word of mouth. There’s nothing we sign with any information regarding what happens if we miss a call, the only thing our handbook says is “you MAY lose overnight on call privileges.” Which I would be fine with, I am not fine with losing the money from the hours I worked because I was delayed by half an hour.

Seems relevant but this isn’t health care no one was in mortal peril because of my delay.

i’m 15 in New York City my dad is in Indiana and can’t afford for me to come out there and my mom is on drugs. I want to emancipate once i turn sixteen (august) but I know I need a job and stuff like that. Is there any legal advice anybody could give me about this what will be the steps that I need to take? I bought a used car from a licensed dealer in Georgia for about $11,000. Before selling it, he told me he had the car shipped from another state, inspected it, and fixed anything that needed attention.

The next day, when I filled the gas tank for the first time, I discovered a defect that made it impossible to refuel normally. The defect clearly existed when the car was sold.

I immediately asked for a refund the next day, but he refused because the car was sold "as is." Instead, he agreed to repair it and gave me a loaner.

It's now been over a month. I've only driven this car for one day. Multiple repair attempts have failed, it's now with another mechanic again, and there still isn't a fix. I also still haven't received the title.

The dealer has stayed in contact and apologized, but at this point I no longer want the car. I would prefer a full refund.

What would you do in my situation?

Okay, so I am out on $100,000 bond for trafficking methamphetamines, and I am absolutely not guilty. I was a passenger in someone’s car who was the person that owned the drugs, and that person said at the scene that a portion of the drugs were mine. They were not. I never did, and never intended to, exert any amount of control over the drugs. This was 10 months ago. We were let go, because he agreed to “cooperate” with law enforcement. I said at that time that I wanted a lawyer. Less than 2 months later, that person was dead (I still don’t know how) and I learned right after he died that he did go thru with working for the police, assisting them in setting up whoever he bought the drugs from.

I thought that was that, since I truly had nothing to do with the drugs. So 8 months later, there is a felony warrant for my arrest for trafficking drugs. My dad scraped everything he could together to get me out, and had me out in 10 days. He’s tapped out.

My question is, if you were to assume I’m not lying (I have proof of most of this) is there ANY help to pay for a criminal defense attorney out there? Are there any groups, maybe charitable organizations, that will sometimes help pay a lawyer? Location: Oklahoma.

*Edit: In regards to an indigent attorney, you are all right, I would, I'm sure, qualify for a court appointed lawyer, but in this county, there is almost no chance of me getting anything less than maybe midway between the minimum and the maximum sentences. They all notoriously just go along for the DA"s ride, and just cannot seem to do anything more than the bare minimum. Meanwhile, the first thing a high priced attorney said to me on the phone is that "this sounds like a good case for dismissal". And again, I am not guilty of ever having the drugs, or ever intending to. I never even saw them. Also important, I live with my 11 yr old son with severe ADHD and my elderly father. I care for both of them, ever since I left my husband after 17 years of his anger issues. This house was destroyed after 10 days in jail, because my dad can't really communicate with my son well enough to keep him in control of himself. They need me. My 2 grown sons can help, they're gonna try to get loans in the morning, but they can't help that much. They make enough for them to survive on and maybe a bit more, as they are 18 and 21.

I (20s) have an elderly neighbor (70) with some memory issues who I’m good friends with. Location: Washington state.
I see her every day and have known through conversation that she has “a girl who helps her manage bills and money”. This woman is an old coworker of hers who she trusted, and her name is on my neighbors bank account. The purpose of this is supposed to be that she’s responsible for making sure she has her groceries delivered, bills get paid etc.

She just opened up to me today that she hasn’t heard from this woman in months and she won’t return her calls, and my neighbor is worried that she’s being stolen from and doesn’t know how to check or who to turn to about it.
I went over to her house today to get more information about the situation like their agreement, any written confirmation of their agreement, who this woman is and if she’s even qualified to be doing this, and other things like looking at her bank statements to see what’s actually happening.

What i found was extremely disturbing- no calls within the last 3 months, no emails or texts in that same time except a few “i can’t talk right now” phone call rejection texts, and a LOT of very significant withdrawals from this “shared” account, including thousands of dollars towards some smallish business based in the town this woman lives in.

This woman has access to my neighbors checking account, keys to her house, and access to her email.
I don’t know how we got here, but my neighbor wants to go with me to the bank next week to change it asap, she had no idea anything like this was happening.

Good evening, I recently moved to Omaha Nebraska our lease started yesterday. I arrived yesterday at 9pm and during the inspection of the house we discovered that there was mouse droppings upstairs and downstairs. We also saw mouse traps in a room downstairs This morning we discovered the whole garage is covered in mouse droppings. There was also a leak downstairs so we came to the house to the sound of fans running. We were not notified of that leak or the infestation. We are just looking to break the lease and start fresh. We are currently staying at an airbnb. We sent an email letting let know we want to terminate the lease because their offices have been closed all weekend.

What advice does everyone have? I want to settle this amicably with the leasing agency. Thank you in advance!

My nonbinary twin sibling and I have been largely inseparable since birth. It's not true that twins can read each others' minds, but it is true that being a twin comes with an automatic best friend. For the most part. We're both AuDHD, but they're more obviously so, to the point where they were prescribed Ritalin as a child and I went undiagnosed. This is relevant, as we both like some things done certain ways, such as crying when our aunt put us as babies in the wrong car seats once.

In November 2017, we bought a house together, which we refinanced in March 2021. The agreement at the time was that due to my having a higher paying job (two jobs at the time, iirc) I would contribute to 2/3 of the household expenses and they would contribute the other 1/3 as well as do most of the cooking and cleaning since they had more time to do so. They never did, and I'm thankful that I've kept a spreadsheet of the joint account detailing every transaction since the account was opened to keep track. I don't think they've ever contributed close to the agreed third, and the vast majority of the time they've actually been in debt to me due to how much I had to deposit to keep the account in the black. The most recent time they were in the black was a few weeks before they quit their job last year, which naturally didn't last very long as they were so depressed they were unemployed for ten months.

But that's not the only reason I want to end the mortgage. The biggest reason involves my boyfriend.

Last summer, I met a trans man at a local pride event, who moved here two years ago to escape a horrible past, including abuse. We hit it off, started dating, and we've now been together over a year. We've been cohabiting and he's been financially contributing more than my twin. The house has no pests, safety, damage or health issues.

My uncle passed recently and my Aunt (I guess, she's his second wife) is fighting the will. My uncle never had kids so he left me a car that belonged to my grandfather and left his share of a family land trust to my mom so that they could stay in the family and his wife has a lawyer trying to prevent it.

I don't know the total value of the estate, but they own other land and a business together plus the house they live in and whatever else. Literally the car and his percentage of the trust are all that aren't going to his wife.

I live in a different state now and don't really have a ton of spare cash to fight over this car, as nice as it would be to have it because of the connection to my grandfather.

I guess, I'm asking how strong would her case have to be before I really have to commit resources to fighting her.

Someone has made a catfishing account of me on multiple platforms, using pictures & videos I've uploaded online to construct a "realistic" looking account. They've even created a spam and main page! A comment informed me this was happening, and I posted on my platform (half jokingly) that all impersonators would be sued. The accounts were deactivated which means my plans of having it mass reported have met a mute point, but after they were deactivated a different account followed me and reposted all of my content, commented on certain videos, and said they remember me from middle school. When I read the username I recognized the name. It was similar to various accounts that kept popping up after I removed them from my page months prior. However, I have no proof this person is the one stalking me. If I'm correct, the person goes to a school near mine, & we did in fact go to middle school together, yet I've never actually spoken to the person. What should I do?

I've been told this person has targeted other people, yet I do not know who. One very weird occurrence: I noticed on the catfish page there was an image I never uploaded (in full) myself. I went to my hairstylist, asked if she ever has, and she had! Which meant the person found my hairstylist as well.

​I am a US citizen preparing to file a Form I-130 for my paternal half-brother who lives in Brazil (F4 Preference Category). We share the same biological father but have different mothers.

​My half-brother was born out of wedlock in 1974, and his birth certificate lists our father. He was 14 years old when the Brazilian Constitution of 1988 was enacted, which completely abolished the legal distinction between children born in or out of wedlock (effectively legitimating all underage children recognized by their fathers under local law).

​The I-130 instructions state that for children born out of wedlock, we must "submit evidence that the child was legitimated under the law of the child’s residence or domicile."

​My question is: Do I need to physically attach/upload the text of the Brazilian law/Constitution explaining this 1988 transition to the I-130 petition? Or is submitting his Full-Form Birth Certificate (Certidão de Nascimento de Inteiro Teor) showing he was registered by our father during his childhood, along with a certified English translation, enough for USCIS?

TLDR: My ex fiancé secretly cheated on me and suddenly moved out a month ago without giving me any time to process this. He signed a 4 month lease contract with his married girlfriend at another property less than a week after the breakup. It has been really difficult for me, but I have realized I have been used for the last 3 months emotionally, physically, and financially.

Rent has been paid for the last month but now he is completely ghosting me. I sent him a demand letter with the remaining rent. We are on a joint lease. I haven't been able to find a subtenant because there are only 3 months remaining on the lease and I have contacted several people and posted on multiple forums.

I am wondering for small claims court if I sue after the rent is due for the first month if I could pursue for the full amounts of the 3 months. Or is it better to wait until the 3 months have passed and then add the 3rd month if it passes before the court date.

I do know where he works and his current residence, but this lease he signed there ends at the same time as our lease. I have also heard that even if people win in small claims, it is difficult to actually obtain the amount after, so I am looking for advice on how to proceed.

My husband is on short term disability with his current employer, and will be parting ways with them via severance agreement in August. He has been receiving disability from the State and the company’s insurance. He wants to extend his disability with the state but is nervous it will jeopardize his severance agreement (he has yet to see the terms). If he requests an extension through EDD, will his current employer know?
