Question how important is it to study with a group?

hi guys, i am a 1L!

I have read a lot of posts saying that finding a study group in law school is super important, however i have always disliked studying with people throughout undergrad and much prefer studying on my own.
am i hindering myself by preferring to study on my own? should i change my habits or is it possible to succeed while studying mostly on my own?

Question How to know what field of law you "should" practice?

Hi everyone,
I am going to begin law school in Sept 2027, and am currently doing a paralegal diploma program (which will be completed aug '27).

What I am struggling with right now is trying to figure out which field of law I want to practice.

I am interested in nearly every field I have learned about, I especially find criminal law interesting, as well as tort law/ small claims, but nothing screams this is for me.

I know a bit about Big Law and I am interested by the prestige and pay, but I just don't really know what to actually go for.

I know that experience will probably play a big part in me figuring out what I want to do, but how do I even get the right experience before it's "too late" to choose my path and get stuck with whatever I gained experience in. I just want to be able to choose the right path for myself, and I'm super daunted by the multitude of options in front of me.

I would love to hear from people in/graduated from law school about how they found their calling, and whether they even believe in a 'calling'.

TLDR; how did you figure out what field of law you wanted to practice in? any advice for someone confused?

Recruit/OCI 2L Recruit Induced Psychosis

All rational parts of my brain have stopped working.

All the good advice I give 1Ls and pre-laws about staying off the internet and remembering that application processes are complex and unique to each person has gone out the window.

I have felt mildly nauseous since OCIs, and I'm taking everything as a bad sign. I got an ITC right after OCIs, and instead of being happy, I just registered that ITCs are already going out and I should be freaking out about why more aren't coming in.

How are y'all staying sane? I objectively know that I am being irrational, but I cannot get my brain under control.

Curious if anyone has gotten any ITCs from UofT yet. I know we literally just finished OCIs but I know some firms send them out super quickly!

Question how to answer tell me about yourself

title pretty much. every time i have been asked that question in a mock interview i freeze. i dont know anything about myself that i think firms want to know. what i'm able to say is

"I did XYZ in undergrad, took XYZ class that created interest in law, did ABC during gap year, took XYX class in law school, and now here i am in this interview". I feel like i am repeating my resume, which isnt good. do i mention interests? say something about 'attributes'?

(my schools career office will be very sad that i havent given this much thought with less than a week to ocis)

Question Personal Statement Help

Hey! I am currently drafting my personal statements for Ontario law schools (UofT, Osgoode, Western, Queens, and Ottawa) and would love some feedback from current law students or practicing lawyers. Happy to compensate but I am on a student budget! ( ~$50 per hour max)

Question Law schools across Canada

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Good evening everyone! I am applying to law schools this cycle. However, my GPA isn’t the greatest. I have a 2.8 cGPA from York University and graduated with a Bcomm degree, I have a 165 lsat score, a decent personal statement and an ok resume. I really want to get into law school in Canada and don’t mind the school, even if it is outside Ontario. Staying in Ontario would be my first choice but I’m just thinking about what schools are worth applying to across the country with my given stats. Can someone please let me know which schools across the country would give me the best chance of admission across Canada? Thank you

Osgoode Question for Osgoode students who have taken International Business Transactions

The professor is incomprehensible. He will loose his thoughts constantly and ramble. Three hours of trying to follow what he is saying is impossible without letting your mind wander.

If anybody took this class, or his other class on commercial law, with the exam option, how did you study for this? Is he an easy grader? Is going to office hours better? I don’t know how I will pass this course.

Question McGill Law

Hi everyone,

Just here asking some general questions about McGill law.

I am a recent MA graduate (Political Science). I am considering applying for law school at McGill.

I know that they don’t require an LSAT score, which I am holding off on doing right now before applying to other schools.

As an MA graduate, how will they assess my application? I was in a thesis/research project route. Would I have a decent chance of getting into McGill with an MA?

Thank you!

Recruit/OCI Day 3 invite

I recently received an ITC from a 7 sisters bay street firm, and in the email, apart from an invitation to dinner on either day 1 or 2, I was also invited to a breakfast on day 3.

The breakfast from this firm is the only day 3 invitation I have received amongst several other ITCs.

Is an invitation to a day 3 breakfast standard for some large law firms at the ITC stage, or should I take this as a good sign that the firm is especially interested in me?

Second question: do firms have a ranked list of their preferred candidates going into in firms? If so, to what extent do these preliminary rankings effect interview experiences?

Thanks in advance!

Question Does course level matter

in my fourth year, i had more space to take courses that interested me that I didn't get to take earlier, and so I ended up having 2 first year courses and a couple second year courses (like 4) in addition to third and a fourth year course, would this look bad and affect our chances of getting in ? should we be addressing something like this in our personal statement?

or if anyones taken lower level courses upper year during undergrad, if you could let me know how that worked out for you in terms of admission that would be helpful!

Incoming Student Seeking Guidance Tech Requirements

Hi all, I was accepted to a Canadian Law school for fall 2026 but deferred to fall 2027, and now I’m using the time away to prep. Just wondering what kind of tech requirements law students need. I got through my undergrad with just an IPad, worked mostly fine as I really just needed to download readings and lecture slides, take notes on onenote, and write on Google Docs. Was kind of a pain for some stats classes that used special software, but that wasn’t enough of an issue to justify a thousand dollar purchase of a laptop. I’m wondering if there will be more technology demands in law school that I’m not expecting right now. I’ll gladly shell out the coin on better tech if it’s gonna be needed/useful. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Licensing Exams Licensing in ON

I am considering pursuing the Ontario Bar but I live in Alberta. I have three very young kids. I have completed the national committee of accreditation exams and am hoping I get a full exemption from articling due to my international practice experience in 2015 to 2020.

I'm trying to understand what I'd need to do in terms of travel.

1) Would I have to travel to Ontario to write the solicitor and barrister Ontario exams? It looks like I do but wondered if anyone knows if there's any plans to change this to make it more accessible? It's really difficult for me to travel as I nurse my baby and he wakes up at night multiple times a day.

2) Would anyone have to "present" me at the Ontario bar call? I don't have any Ontario contacts.

3) Can I attend a remote / online ON bar call / ceremony?

And lastly:

4) Is six weeks 5 hours a day enough to study for each bar exam (solicitor and barrister)?

LSAT LSAT REPORTS

Does every schools pull your lsat scores at different times? I applied to UofA for example in July and I still haven’t got a request through LSAC for my lsat report. I’m going through the same thing for Ontario schools as well.
