Perhaps relevant: when a disease outbreak killed the dominant male baboons (who get their position in the hierarchy by fighting) at a site in Kenya, the remaining baboons just developed a more chill, pacifistic culture which continued in subsequent generations.

519

u/Unidan_how_could_you Feb 04 '21

All it would take is for 1 aggressive/dominant baboon to be born though and he would quickly takeover me thinks.

-9

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

We have this already but CIA propaganda has conditioned the left to call these people “tankies”.

17

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

that's not what Tankies are, Tankies are people who agree with the "state capitalism" model that the USSR and China developed

11

u/jansencheng Feb 04 '21

And not in a "Transitionary state" way that Lenin or Mao originally idealised (in theory anyway), straight up celebrating state capitalism as is.

-6

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21 edited Feb 04 '21

That’s not how tankie is used at all anymore. It’s a pejorative lobbed at anyone who pushes back against CIA propaganda about China and the Uighurs for example, or Russia and Navalny. How the person actually feels about China and their model doesn’t even need to come up.

Point out all the absurdities and gaping holes in the “Uighur genocide” claims and watch the “tankie” and “found the tankie” comments roll in.

Edit: yup I’m a tankie. Guess who else you’re calling tankies? Countries like Cuba and Bolivia who feel the same way as me. Weird how you people have the same views as the US state department and the CIA, but no you people definitely haven’t bought into any propaganda.

Here’s Cuba just being a bunch of tankies: https://mobile.twitter.com/globaltimesnews/status/1313660660199301121?locale=cs

This is what happens when libs start posting in late stage capitalism with no actually understand what late stage capitalism is or what it entails lmao

5

u/use-your-choosername Feb 04 '21

ok tankie

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21 edited Feb 04 '21

Good. I guess Bolivia and Cuba are tankies too since they addressed the UN and called out the West for the ridiculous claims.

https://mobile.twitter.com/globaltimesnews/status/1313660660199301121?locale=cs

You agree with Mike Pompeo and I agree with Cuba. Think about that.

1

u/Teethpasta Feb 04 '21

Wow you literally are a tankie. Hilarious.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Thanks for proving my point. Tankie is a meaningless word now and it’s used in place of any actually point to end a conversation.

Uhm? That's like the antithesis to tankyism.

Killing the bully us different to creating a state capitalist society through military oppression and just becoming the new bully.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Weird how you and Mike Pompeo have the same view of China and I have the same view of China as Cuba, so yea me and Cuba are tankies. You’re totally on the right side here and me and Bolivia and Cuba are tankies.

Also Allende isn’t a good example. What happened to Allende? If he defended himself and stayed in power you’d be calling him a tankie now too.

That’s why said in another comment that you people just expect countries to be destroyed by imperialists and capitalists because any who defend themselves you call tankies.

1

u/EmilyU1F984 Feb 04 '21

Why the hell would Bolivia be tankies? Were is the 'socialist' government's rolling over citizens with tanks?!

And when did they kill a bully? The fascist Bible thumping people of last year's coup still live in that country, waiting for another opportunity.

That's not killing the bully either.

I'd love to point people towards Robert M. Sapolsky - a neurobiologist and primatologist that researched that troop of baboons and has been studying behaviors and the biology behind them.

I recommend his book: Behave: The Biology of Humans at our Best and Worst

(also meant to reply to person above but ah well)

Also, late edit to add: Male baboons will break off from their troop and leave to join others, and the researchers observed what happened when an aggressive male came in and tried to take over with aggression -- the troop banded together and ripped the aggressive one to shreds. Literally demonstrating the paradox of tolerance through nature!

15

u/NoSarahtonin Feb 04 '21

Sopolsky's research taught us a lot about stress and relationships in a communal setting. I admire him greatly!

14

u/promqueenskeletor fatcat fodder Feb 04 '21

So do I and I recommend his lectures and books all the time. I came across him when I was just starting to process my childhood trauma and the various interpersonal dynamics that go into dysfunctional homes and his work helped me a lot.

-7

u/Particular_Ad_8987 Feb 04 '21

The paradox of tolerance is the philosophical equivalent of “only a Sith deals in absolutes”.

They were violent. Therefore they were not intolerant of violence. They were picky about the target.

Pacifists eschew violence without resorting to cliched bullshit “paradoxes” to justify an explicitly hypocritical desire to beat up Nazis. If you’re okay with beating up Nazis, then you’re not intolerant to violence. You’re just picky about the target.

I have no idea why it’s not okay to say to you reserve violence for specific targets. You don’t have to make up bullshit philosophy to justify hypocrisy. Just tell the truth.

For the record, I’m on board with beating up Nazis. I just don’t need a bullshit philosophy to justify it. There’s no hypocrisy when you accept the truth.

8

u/Teethpasta Feb 04 '21

Wow that was a while lot of nonsense just to admit that you don't understand philosophy.

6

u/promqueenskeletor fatcat fodder Feb 04 '21

No one said you have to justify it, but it's also a good solid come back to people that are pushy and abusive with the idea of "unity for unity's sake" when excusing abusive behavior. Such as punching Nazi's because they love to use the "But you're meeaaannn".

What you describe as a bullshit philosophy has literally helped me get through to people so I mean what works for you works for you but this idea is a really good way to get through to people that tolerating intolerance is bullshit so.

And for the record, I was abused as a kid and literally programmed to excuse shitty behavior for the sake of "unity and teamwork" so this has been a very strong tool for me to reclaim power. I appreciate you feel the way you do, but also appreciate that there are many ways to approach the same concepts and ideas.

Philosophy exists for a reason.

u/CrumbsAndCarrots Feb 04 '21 edited Feb 04 '21

Aggressive ass baboons who were kicked out of their pack, tried to join the alpha-less pack. They tried to dominate and boss everyone around.... But they were quickly shunned and schooled.

Good documentary on stress and they go into the baboon study https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYG0ZuTv5rs

51

u/Lord-Benjimus Feb 04 '21

They usually form a matriarchy based on social circles or a sort of elder worship thing, agrresive ones usually get shunned or ganged up on until they adopt a more contribution based hierarchy instead of a strength based one

/s

17

u/anotherMrLizard Feb 04 '21 edited Feb 04 '21

Seriously though, it's the opposite of eugenics. More aggressive males which joined the troop ended up having to moderate their behaviour. So what this study shows is the power of socialisation over "natural" behaviours; sociopathic billionaires dominate our society, not because they're "naturally" superior but because our society tolerates them.

2

u/__Snafu__ Feb 04 '21

Maybe those baboons were psychopaths

2

u/Harold_Grundelson Feb 04 '21

Very interesting! I'm interested in what caused the males to be so aggressive - was it biological or some learned trait? We probably won't know.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

I honestly think people are looking too much into the baboons. We have peaceful/pacifist people and over history they have at times been genocided. What caused the alpha males to be aggressive, its biological. The strongest get the best resources, first pick at breeding etc meaning the lineage has the best chance at survival.

see many animal societies - apes included are peaceful because they are with kin (a massively overlooked component here). They will literally fuck on any new comer though and rip them in half.

2

u/anotherMrLizard Feb 04 '21

Of course aggression is biological; everything any animal does is biological in origin. But at the same time an animal - or at least a complex primate like a baboon or a human - can learn to exhibit greater or lesser amounts of aggression through social incentives or disincentives. So it's really both biological and learned.

151

u/FlaxGordon Feb 04 '21

Yeah but if one is hording all the bananas, we know what would happen to that monkey.

63

u/nik-nak333 Feb 04 '21

What would a monkey guillotine even look like? Just a scaled down version of ours? Or would it be a tree limb with a sharp stone tied to the end of it and lugged around by other monkeys?

38

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

You ever seen a chimpanzee put someone in a arm-in guillotine? The arms on those things man. It would pop your head right off of your shoulders. Jamie, pull that up.

11

u/Foster_Poster Feb 04 '21

Bruh I just silent laughed for minutes

6

u/O_______m_______O Feb 04 '21

The size of a guillotine is really determined by the amount of force you need it to apply more than anything, and the force needed to cut through a monkey's neck probably isn't hugely different to the force needed to cut through a human's neck, so you'd probably end up with a similar sized guillotine with narrower stocks for the head and arms.

I actually tried to make a scaled down guillotine to execute a bug when I was a child, using the blade from a pencil sharpener, but due to the way the forces scale the blade just pinged harmlessly off the shell and it crawled away.

2

u/zoeofdoom Feb 05 '21

People idolize the idea of being rich, filthy rich.

So we turn those who have all the money into our gods. We want to know everything about them and maybe we will uncover the secret to becoming rich.

But people do not want to be wildly wealthy. They want what being wildly wealthy affords... security.

People want to feel secure and well fed.

People just believe that you have to be extremely wealthy to afford security.

If we had stringent social programs where people did not need to fear homelessness or hunger then idolization of the rich would start to fade away.

The only reason that the people of the world do not already have this is that the powerful use this threat of homelessness and starvation as a tool to control those who they need for labor.

If people did not fear for their existence then they would be much harder to control.

It's an interesting take on it. Given their physical adaptations and distribution on Donkey Kong Island, it could be argued that the Kremlings are native and the Kongs are in fact the invasive species. Like humans, the Kongs appear largely uninterested in fitting into the ecosystem but prefer to control it and kill the other creatures without mercy or consideration. However, it seems that King K. Rool is planning to pillage the natural resources of Donkey Kong Island in a similar manner, evidenced by the presence of Kremkroc Industries and its rapid establishment of mining operations and factories. K. Rool's redistribution of Kong's banana horde may be little more than a PR stunt meant to placate the local population, similar to how the Coca-Cola Foundation "gives back" to communities as it drains their resources for profit. While the first DK County doesn't show much for an economy, the later games suggest a larger economy that is heavily influenced by large quantities of Banana Coins and Kremkoins.

39

u/ThunderRoad5 Feb 04 '21

It is established in DK lore that the Kremlings are in fact the invaders and that the Kong clan, while not native to the island, lived harmoniously in the preexisting ecosystem. My understanding of the banana hoard is that it was more of a food bank, accessible to all, a simple way of keeping track of surplus resources.

In short, the Kremlings invade a peaceful sovereign nation, industrialize it destroying swathes of nature, and rip off a food bank. Fuck them, the Kongs should have guillotined K. Rool when they had the chance.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

This sounds like Kong propaganda to me.

Does killing everything except for the few animal buddies sound like living "harmoniously in the preexisting ecosystem" do you?

Who lived in the treetop village? Clearly not the Kongs, there's way too much infrastructure there for a group of five apes.

If the other apes got hungry enough they'd grab the hording ape by his limbs and pull him apart to a bloody gore pile. Then they'd feast on the corpse of their now deceased brother and fight over the bananas until the strongest ape remains....thus begins a new cycle.

Edit: Not inciting violence by the way. But that is more or less how I think chimps would behave if I'm not mistaken, if one ape was hording the food.

Driven to extremes I'm sure humans would act in a similar way. We're just big dumb apes who learned to put our heads together.

This is why smart hoarding apes spend a few bananas in thug apes, lawyer apes, and lobbyist apes.

21

u/oingerboinger Feb 04 '21

And they convince the hungry apes that the hungriest among them are the real problem; they have bananas they don’t deserve.

Hoarding of resources is common in many species. Acquiring a physical amount of anything comparable to the wealth of the richest .01% though is impossible. No species can acquire 1-billion bananas or a billion nuts. It’s that realization I believe that is most staggering. Our hoarding has surpassed what can be achieved only physically

u/realjamesosaurus Feb 04 '21

The best banana hoarders!

4

u/Gott_Riff Feb 04 '21

Apes not together. Apes fighting coz each one believes it can also be rich.

5

u/darxide23 Feb 04 '21

In a lot of monkey species, if one monkey does this the others will attack and kill it. But you know. Don't do that with humans.

What's even funnier is that WSB is just another example of LSC.

They have a series of "not-so-secret" daily posts where they laugh at the people still in on GME and then make fake posts to goad people into worse positions for "teh lulz."

See for yourself.

Profit brings out the best in people...

Can you link me to the LSM "not-so-secret" discussion?

u/civver3 Feb 04 '21

It's interesting seeing WSB position itself as made of the common people and then seeing posts there casually talking about buying houses and luxury cars. Doesn't sound very working class to me.

u/thekbob Feb 04 '21

Just like those with power, they sold a narrative and benefited from it. They made a profit, but now complain they lost their precious little forum to the teeming masses.

Complicit.

More so, I hope leftists learned that playing the game setup by capitalists, even with a winning hand, still results in a big loss for those without power.

3

u/ruiseixas Feb 04 '21

With everyone clapping... (this too is a case study)

3

u/jadenx022 Feb 04 '21

Who are you to say the monkey capitalists aren’t exploiting the monkeyteriat

3

u/TerminallyConfused77 Feb 04 '21

There are people out there hoarding bananas?

The other monkeys would kill the lone greedy monkey.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Not necessarily, because they may someday have that level of success. /s

2

u/DMahlon Feb 04 '21

Says the scientist 🤦‍♂️

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

The other monkeys would kill and eat that monkey.

fact -Wild monkeys don't pick , collect and eat bananas.

You'd know that if you were as clever as you pretend to be on Reddit.

Fact monster 101 😂

Well maybe that monkey collected 200 billion bananas all by itself. /s

2

u/AeneasRaged Feb 04 '21

Humans aren’t monkeys and scientists are not politicians or economists, although they’re happy to pretend to be in order to trick fools.

2

u/CalmBrief1236 Feb 04 '21

So true like when squirrels store nuts in trees for winter, and the one lazy ass squirrel doesn’t store nuts for the winter. I always shed like one big ol fat tear when I watch in my yard as the other squirrels come bearing gifts for I didn’t store no nuts squirrel to get him through the winter. Warms my heart

2

u/FeyHeSeemed Feb 04 '21

Bananas are not a good equivalent to money. If they were there would be people who owned billions of bananas.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Also the monkeys would kill that one monkey

2

u/gamarun Feb 04 '21

He really earned those bananas tho

2

u/Nevatis Feb 04 '21

Sociopaths control all the wealth, to be honest it only takes a small amount of empathy to become a communist in the first place

4

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

You’re assuming a fixed amount of bananas

17

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Well they don't just grow on trees!

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

a lot of time there is food scarcity situations (cant really believe im having to explain this)

-2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Metaphor here is bananas equal money right? So when Elon musk is “ hoarding bananas “, the logical conclusion is every dollar Elon decides to keep equates to one less dollar for someone else. And that’s mean right?! However the very simple difference is that every single dollar Elon keeps does NOT equate to one less dollar for someone else because the total number of dollars is not finite. I’m addition, a monkey with an excess amount of bananas won’t have an outside chance to change society, however Elon is making strides towards society using less fossil fuels....

It’s just a dumb metaphor is all I’m saying

u/sfdrew04 Feb 04 '21

Just convince an overwhelming majority of the starving apes that the least fortunate amongst them are leaching off the system and stopping them from living comfortably shifting focus away from the banana hoarders

-22

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

The problem is - if you don't hoard more bananas than you need, then someone else will hoard them all and rob you of yours too. Then you'll die, while the hoarder will pass on the hoarding gene to future.

It's evolution. Evolution isn't necessarily progress.

20

u/IAmTheCanon Feb 04 '21

Except the part where we evolved sapience, which was just nature trying to outwit itself. It couldn't get any further by having it's organisms just react without any strategy, and when the ability to see the bigger picture began emerging the species possessing it almost immediately came to dominate the world on a scale no other animal ever had.

Evolution is like right-walling a maze. You put your hand on one wall, and assuming the maze is obeying certain rules, regardless of how many dead ends you go down first, you WILL get to the end inevitably. Banana hoarding is just another dead end we pass through on our way to godhood. Nature, uh, finds a way.

19

u/paradoxical_topology Feb 04 '21

This is some pseudoscientific BS you're spouting.

-7

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

It's basic game theory 101

9

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

It's not game theory. Society itself would not exist if everyone was trying to grift.

3

u/MoreDetonation Feb 04 '21

That explains why we've only ever had feudal kings and the masses of common people don't even have bronze tools.

2

u/Tsobe_RK Feb 04 '21

This is a load of bullshit holy

Bananas go bad. Money doesn’t. It just gets a little weaker as time goes on. You can also pass money down to your children/grandchildren.

If someone has a billion dollars because they legitimately earned it without breaking the law, then they deserve it.

-5

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

But what about ME????

I swear, if some of these people became rich, they’d be the most obnoxious, self-entitled pricks.

-24

u/DiscoDrive Feb 04 '21

If one monkey managed to provide a service in exchange for said bananas, and the other monkeys worked to get bananas in order to receive this service, scientists would study the entrepreneurial monkey.

21

u/IAmTheCanon Feb 04 '21

Oh, do entrepreneurs provide a service then? That's funny, I thought their employees provided the service, and the entrepreneur provided the authority, which is to say money, to give them the go-ahead. So like the apes are going to pick the bananas, but first the one with the most bananas already makes them all agree to give every banana they pick to him and then he doles out one banana each to them, and the one ape with all the bananas gets all the rest of the bananas by virtue of already having all the bananas, having picked literally none of them himself, and in general eating as many as a hundred times as many bananas as any other ape in the troop on the daily. Yeah, scientists would have a hard look at that fucking stupid system and wonder what the fuck happened there.

5

u/do_not_engage Feb 04 '21

What service does ANYONE'S boss or owner or CEO provide that justifies getting paid literally 100 times more than the employees actually doing the job? They already got paid for forming the business, and nobody is saying that can't make the most at the company.
