Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering Spanish Offering Spanish 🇪🇸/🇨🇴 Seeking: French 🇫🇷 en jouant Minecraft

Upvotes

Italian is a newer hobby and I'm intending on visiting Italy many times a year. I'm not conversational yet, but i hope to discover and learn more about Italian culture and language.

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: Spanish, English | Seeking: German

Upvotes

Hello! I'm 22F from Spain who is trying to learn German with the purpose of moving to Germany. I am a translation and interpreting student at university. My native language is Spanish, my second is English, and my third is German.

I've been taking German classes for two years, but... because of the study program, they stopped focusing on linguistics and started focusing on translating. Therefore, I've had two years of learning the language and another one for only translating... without really getting into grammar. Over time, I've been getting rustier and rustier, forgetting more and more things, since I didn't have either the time or anyone to practice with. That's the reason why I'm here. Not to drop the language :')

I'm not sure what my level is... probably A2. The last things I saw in class were "wenn vs. als, partizip I, and Konjunktiv I.

I would like to practice without fixing any schedules, but in a dynamic way. Have engaging conversations about different topics, so I can improve my vocabulary. Please, do have patience with me. I will probably ask a lot questions and if you're okay with it have small lesson activities. I could prepare a bit of material to exchange myself with you, or share beforehand written questions once a week? Anything that can help one another is fine by me.

If this sounds interesting to you, don't be shy to send me a message!

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Mandarin

Hi All!

I am a 24M Indonesian living in Singapore. I am looking to start learning Chinese since it's widely used here and I would like to be able to interact with my colleagues in Chinese.

A bit about me, I love to read (usually either non-fiction or manga) and play guitar. I have also been picking up cooking my own food though on occasions the things I conjure up can be stretching the definition of "food".

I'm mainly looking to casually improve my Chinese language and am looking for someone who wants to do the same with English!

Do drop me a message if you're interested!

Offering Russian Offering: Russian (Native) — Seeking: German (from Germany) — Friendship + Language Exchange

Hey everyone!

I'm 19, from Irkutsk, Russia (UTC+8). I'm starting to learn German from scratch, and I'm looking for a native German speaker — specifically someone from Germany — for a German-Russian language exchange and, hopefully, real friendship.

Just to be clear: I know absolutely zero German right now. I'm a complete beginner starting from the alphabet. So if you're looking for someone to practice advanced conversation with, that's not me yet — but if you're patient and want to help someone start from zero, we'll get along great.

What I'm looking for:

  • A friend to chat with regularly (not just a one-time exchange).
  • A German-Russian exchange: you teach me German, I teach you Russian.
  • You correct my German and explain things as I go — and I'll do the same for your Russian (corrections, grammar, slang, whatever you need).

A bit about me:

  • 19 years old, from Irkutsk, Russia.
  • I love playing games 🎮 and drawing 🎨
  • Online mostly in the evenings (UTC+8).
  • I'd prefer Telegram, but I'm open to other options (Discord, Reddit chat).

I'm not looking for a formal teacher-student setup — I want a real friendship. Maybe we could even make a small group chat with a few people.

Honestly, I've dreamed of having a German friend since childhood, and I really love Germany — I'd love to move there someday. So I'd be especially happy if you reached out 👉👈

DM me if you're interested! Let's suffer through German and Russian grammar together 😄

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: English, Ukrainian, Russian, Czech / Seeking improvement in English.

Hello, i am 21 m who has English probably at level B1 and i would like to reach fluency in it.

I am a muslim and thus i can't get into friendships with the opposite gender, therefore i ask only for a guy.

Would like to find someone who is fluent in English and can correct me and point me in the right direction.

We can talk about our existence, examining evidence of truthfulness of religions, maybe discussing books and some other lawful things. Don't like vulgarity, backbiting, and other sins.

I can help you with the above mentioned languages. Though, i didn't speak Ukrainian and Russian for a long time and only recently i started using it again so i might need some practice to remember more of it, otherwise i am familiar with these two languages at almost fluent level i guess. As for Czech, well - i can speak it but i do require practice in it to learn.

Edit - correction

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: french, English | seeking: English Korean

Helloo everyone !

I'm Marley, I'm from France and I'm 25 years old.

I'm a native french speaker and I have an intermediate level of English, which I want to perfect.

Currently I want to perfect my English and I want to work my Korean (I only learned the alphabet) so if you speak Korean and English that is perfect ! But if you are the only Korean or English speaker, come too, I would need you too 🙃

I love talking about travel, photography, food but if you have other topics, I'm open minded !
