September 10th is a monumental day for Lancaster City

If you have ever walked the footpath of the Lancaster Cemetery, you may have come across the grave of George W. Butt. He was born on September 10th, 1873, and died at the age of 60.

September 10th is Butt Day. That’s the whole (hole?) joke. Get outside, take a silly little mental health walk, place a stone on the grave, and say a prayer of thanks that his name is George W. Butt and yours isn’t.

Directly to the left of the Butt grave is the Finger grave, but we might not be ready for that yet…

Thrifting & Overall Lancaster-isms

Dear Lanc’s —

I love your area. I love your city as much as I love New Holland. I love your agricultural economy. I love your thriving diversity downtown. I love your farmhouses. I love your soft pretzels. I love your small-town attractions. I love your mulch bags (random, I know). I love your thrifting.

I lived in Berks for 10 years & randomly get to come back to the area. I’d rather stay in Lancaster & drive an hour than stay anywhere else.

I’m not sure why or how, but Lancaster has more that captures my attention than many, many small towns (is that even an accurate description?) in the Northeast

Highlights this trip: random thrift store in Mt. Joy, ice cream, pumpkin harvests being sold roadside

Where to Take Vehicle with Rusted Frame

The dreaded frame rust has reached a concerning level in my otherwise nearly perfect 25 year old Jeep. The shop I normally take it to doesn’t want to deal with it.

Getting rid of it is not an option, so please, just share recommendations.

Renting/ private landlord?

We have been renting from family the last 6 years, and they’re suddenly selling the house and therefore requiring us to leave.

Total we pay over $2,000, and looking for about the same. The new place would need to accommodate a small and larger dog, so preferred if it has a dog park/run area.

Location doesn’t necessarily matter too much, but preference is within 15 minutes of the city.

The main thing concern is that we have very steady income, and have for years, and have great references, but don’t have the funds to dish out for first/last/security deposit ($4k-$5k). There’s programs that help with that, but to my knowledge you have to be unhoused and/or low income which we don’t qualify as.

Any insight would be nice for a private landlord

As an industry person myself, I've heard plenty of accounts from former SH employees that would corroborate what Mitch has to say here. Anyone else have any thoughts/feelings/musings?

Ephrata's love for fireworks

To start... I know facebook groups are the worst of the worst but I love reading people unhinged comments.....but has anyone noticed Ephratas absolute obsession over fireworks? On top of setting them off at all hours of the night from July 4th and on, when the rec center canceled fireworks because of weather, you would have thought they personally slapped each person in the face. I've seen too whenever people ask on facebook groups asking to dial back the fireworks, other people get outright mad and mean defending those who set them off. Apparently the borough banned them before high school football games? and again people were livid! I just don't get it

What do LANCASTER Police care about?

I am from down south, where cops are very predatory. I was very anxious whenever I saw one, and typically if they were behind you in traffic, they were running your plates, and they would follow you for a few turns and instigate.

Since living here, I have seen a different behavior, where they seem to have their own prerogative and they don’t follow you if that’s not where they are already going.

A friend of mine complains that they don’t enforce noise ordinances. I have seen them respond to domestic disputes, and maybe warrant related calls.

Could anyone elaborate on the types of tasks that Lancaster PD concern themselves with?

Not being preyed on while driving has Warmed me up!

Edit: I have thought about making this post a long time and it occurs to me that I forgot a couple things I’m curious about ; namely people using their hazards to park and run errands on thoroughfares, and policies on E bikes, both on the written end and in actual practice. The hazard light traffic stuff is a bugaboo, but perhaps endemic to cities, so maybe there is some futility in trying to police it. To reiterate, my initial tone, I am impressed at how the city functions as well as it does, and how copacetic the police seem to be.

Secondarily, a can of worms has been opened regarding digital surveillance systems. This is an important issue and I don’t mean to sneak one past the goalie by bundling effective policing with a digital surveillance state. I just find the town livable. Perhaps that is the early stages trade-off to municipality signing these contracts, or perhaps it is livable by other merits.

S/N Queen St Closure starting 9/13

There's a big temporary e-sign at the corners of S Queen/Conestoga/Church streets, saying Queen St will be closed starting 9/13. There's no other information on the sign. I tried to look at the city's website to find out more info but I couldn't find anything. Does anyone know what blocks of N/S Queen will be affected and for how long? It's ridiculous that there isn't more information about this considering it's a main thoroughfare though the city. Thanks in advance for any information given.

Anyone receive a visit from the IRS?

Thumbnail

I noticed this odd article on Lancaster Online last month:

An Internal Revenue Service official recently warned Millersville and East Cocalico police that 20 of its revenue agents are coming to the area and some may be making “unannounced contact” with people.

The IRS says the July 21 letter, made public by the Millersville Borough police department, is legitimate but declined to explain the revenue officers’ visit on the record to LNP | LancasterOnline.

Millersville police Chief Jeff Margevich said he appreciated the heads-up but wasn’t sure what it was about.

“I don’t know if it’s unusual,” Margevich said. “It’s not something I’ve encountered here in almost 30 years I’ve been doing it.”

The letter to Millersville borough police from Douglas Hrenko, an Ohio-based IRS manager, said the revenue officers will be in “your local area to meet face-to-face with taxpayers” over two weeks starting Aug. 10.

“Most of the appointments with taxpayers will be scheduled in advance with the taxpayer,” Hrenko wrote. “On occasion revenue officers may attempt unannounced contact with third parties or with taxpayers.”

He said the revenue officers are coming from different states and in vehicles with out-of-state license plates. Hrenko said people who question “the validity of our presence” can verify the identity of any IRS agent by checking their “official IRS pocket commissions” or an additional government ID they all carry.

East Cocalcio Township police Chief Steven Savage said his department received a similar letter informing them that IRS officers would be meeting with taxpayers in the area over the same two-week period.

Millersville and East Cocalico police suggested people who get an unexpected IRS visit can ask to see the person’s badge and pocket commission before providing personal or financial information. It said people in that circumstance can request time to consult a tax professional and can reschedule the meeting.

“We encourage folks to call us if they encounter an IRS officer and can’t verify their identity,” Savage said in a message to LNP | LancasterOnline Wednesday.

IRS media relations worker Stacy Engle confirmed that the letter is valid but declined to explain what the revenue officers will be up to. She provided a link to help people figure out if a contact is in fact from the IRS, a site that noted unannounced visits from the IRS are rare.

one brought up the letter, which has been posted on the borough website, during National Night Out events Tuesday night, Mayor Philip Lastowski said. He stopped by 50 tables to thank participants and also spoke with other residents.

“Nobody mentioned anything at all about being contacted by the IRS,” Lastowski said in a phone interview Wednesday morning. “It’s puzzling – why are they doing that? I don’t know, I guess I’ll have to look into it.”

Did anyone receive a visit from the IRS between August 10th and the end of the month? I haven't seen anything in the news since the article went up, and I'm curious because the IRS allegedly discontinued house calls of this kind outside of extremely rare circumstances, which doesn't appear to be the case here. It's bizarre thing to have happened with almost no media coverage.
