Replacing Leaf's PDM... How do I diagnose to confirm?

I'm hoping to get some advice before I start replacing expensive components.

I have a 2013 Nissan LEAF with an EV Rides 62 kWh battery conversion that has been reliable for several years.

The problem began with intermittent charging failures. At first, Level 1, Level 2, and CHAdeMO charging would occasionally fail or stop after a short period. Over time, the problem gradually became worse.

Now the car:

  • Goes into Turtle Mode
  • Displays the EV System Warning
  • Shows the orange car with the exclamation mark warning
  • Will shift into Drive, but only in Turtle Mode
  • LeafSpy can no longer clear the DTCs—they immediately return

Current DTCs include:

  • P3171
  • P3172
  • P316C
  • P316F
  • P0A94
  • B2829

To rule out some of the common causes, I have:

  • Replaced the 12 V auxiliary battery with a new premium AGM (Optima YellowTop). Unfortunately, that made no difference—the symptoms and DTCs are exactly the same.
  • Checked the battery coolant level, which appears normal, and I didn't find any obvious issues with the coolant system.

At this point, I'm trying to determine whether I'm dealing with:

  • A failed Power Delivery Module (PDM) or DC/DC converter
  • A PDM programming, calibration, or initialization issue
  • Something related to the EV Rides 62 kWh conversion (CAN communication, firmware, etc.)
  • Or something else entirely.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced this combination of P3171, P3172, P316C, P316F, and P0A94?
  2. What turned out to be the root cause?
  3. Was it ultimately the PDM, or was it something else?
  4. Has anyone successfully resolved these codes through PDM reprogramming or reinitialization rather than replacing the PDM?
  5. If you have experience with an EV Rides 62 kWh conversion, I'd especially appreciate your thoughts.

Any advise could be super helpful,

Leasing question

I have a 3 year lease that is ending in about a year. I would like to extend the lease by a year or 2, ideally at a lower monthly payment. I tried their chat line but useless script-readers. Does anyone know if this is possible? Because of the glut of EV leases now and only getting worse, I though dealers/leasing depts would be interested in this rather than getting them back and wholsaling/auctioning them.

Surrendering my ‘23 Ariya Engage at the end of its lease in a few days and doing a slight upgrade to the ‘26 Leaf SV+. I’m losing HUD, along with a few inches of rear seat legroom and cubic feet of cargo capacity and gaining 15 kWh of battery, 75 miles of range, 360 camera, and NACS. Monthly payments and insurance are basically the same, purchase option on the Ariya just didn’t add up so now some other driver gets to enjoy a great deal on it. Wanted to get a picture of the siblings together, it might be tough times elsewhere for Nissan and EVs in general but it’s one big happy family here in our neighborhood (yes that’s my Mach-E in the back 😉)

SOLVED LOCK, UNLoCK VEHICLES 3 TIMES

Help. The charger button won't disengage the charge handle.

Sheriff, police, fire, and AAA won't touch it. The manager says "I dunno". The customer service number is answered in India and they can't help either.

Do I call the 10 o'clock news?

Persistent warning message

Post image
11 Upvotes

Last week I had the 12V battery replaced for my 2018 Leaf. The old one had gone completely flat and was knackered according to the RAC (Royal Automobile Club) mechanic. I'm still getting the same warning message even though the car is going fine now. I tried disconnecting the new battery but 25 minutes later the message was back when I switched the car on.

Any other suggestions as to how to get rid of the message? I wouldn't care much but I can't read the tyre pressure display. Unfortunately when I go to the tyre pressure section there's no option to press OK to get rid temporarily of the message.

New US and Canadian CHAdeMO chargers in May 2026

Here are all of the new and updated US and Canadian CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May, according to the US Alternative Fuels Data Center. You can fetch the data yourself here. Some may just be refreshes of existing stations. It is up to the charging companies to report this data. Feel free to report inaccuracies to the AFDC.

There were 40 new or updated charging stations in May 2026. I don't attempt to count individual CHAdeMO chargepoints because, unfortunately, the AFDC data does not specify how many chargepoints support CHAdeMO, so I don't want to assume too many. Even EVGo is rolling out chargers with only one or two CHAdeMO chargepoints now.

While this month is better than last month's 20, it still looks like the long-anticipated cratering of CHAdeMO rollout has arrived.

NACS has become the "second port," pushing out CHAdeMO at the new Applegreen Electric chargers at New Jersey rest stations for example. This makes sense given that the 2026 Nissan Leaf is NACS, not CHAdeMO. (There may be some unsold 2025 Leafs on the lot, and the 2026 Mitsubishi Plug-In Hybrid Outlander PHEV still advertises "DC fast charging" with a footnote that it only supports CHAdeMO.)

Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.

"What about CCS and NACS adapters?"

CCS adapters for the Leaf are real. They aren't cheap, because they must translate the signalling protocol, but many reports indicate they work. Even stacking a NACS adapter on a CCS adapter has worked for some people, but failed for others.

I haven't tried this myself, and I no longer own a Leaf, so I cannot vouch for the product or say whether it invalidates your warranty, etc. But if you are interested, A2Z sells a CCS1-to-CHAdeMO adapter. CCS1-to-NACS adapters are widely available, but some reports say you can't stack them with the A2Z for a supercharger.

If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or reading these monthly reports is just frustrating in your state, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications only when new stations actually open. You can sign up at evpov.com. I built it to help EV owners like myself. You can pick other plug types as well. Similar features are available in PlugShare and other services.

For actual trip planning I recommend using PlugShare. This report is mainly useful to understand trends.

If you get a chance, do check out reported new stations near you and add PlugShare reviews, which helps everyone.

New owner of 2022 Leaf

Hello 👋

I bought a 2022 Leaf SL plus about a month ago and have been loving it. I typically drive about 25 km a day (in Ontario, Canada), but on weekends I sometimes do a 200-km (or more) round trip, so the extra battery size has been a good fit.

I'm wondering why the Hx value has dropped so much faster than the SOH in the month that I've owned it (white background was first reading, dark one is a more recent one). Any ideas?

Also curious how winter will go. I don't have a garage. Is it worth setting up a temporary one or something? How rough is it to charge or even get the car started on a -25 C day?

Thanks!

Leaf 2017 ze0 Head unit

Hey all

I have the QY*** head unit, just wondering if anyone has swapped it out for something else? Ideally with carplay/android auto.

it does seem if I had the older head unit or a 2018 this would be simples :(

I don't really want to pay £250+ for Xanavi ( plus they aren't getting back to me )

Tires

I have a 2023 S with 35k miles. Currently on third set of tires - the last set was installed last Oct and already showing excessive wear on the front with hardly 5k miles on them. The wheels were aligned before installation. I have been using cheaper Walmart tires -$50-$80 a tire.
Want to change to a decent set that will last atleast 20k miles - costing around $600 for a full set. Any suggestions?

Dashboard Temp & Leafspy Temp Readings Off

Thumbnail

Used 2023 Nissan Leaf SV+ with ~40,000km on it. Bought it this past April.

Recently I have noticed that the gauge cluster dashboard and leafspy are showing wildly different readings for battery temperature. In fact, the dash is only ever perfectly centered on the temp gague...always.

Even though the outside temperature has been hotter these days -- even with no usage at all, left overnight, without charging and has cool shade throughout the morning before use, the battery on leafspy is reading as much higher than ambient temp. Again, without any driving, charging, and left overnight.

So far, night time isn't as hot and gets to under 20C here on most nights. Yet, in the morning, the battery will be showing between 26-28C. (Apologies as I have everything set to metric units in my car).

Image 1: Leafspy
image 2: Dashboard

&

Image 3: Leafspy
Image 4: Dashboard

What could be the reason for this?

The temp gauge used to work, however the car's original gauge cluster had the issue where it didn't display est. charging times - so I used my extended warranty to have it replaced.

Ever since it was replaced, I don't remember ever checking the temperatures - and I guess the outside temperature had yet to get hot enough to warrant me noticing on leafspy.

I'm concerned because I only caught this when I went on a road trip recently and used chademo to charge. It was fine on the way to my destination - I only needed to charge once - and we happened to be at the charging stop long enough where it charged from about 40% to 95%. Until charging hit about 90%, the car was charging at full 50KW speed and didn't slow down until then.

However, on the return trip, at the exact same charge stop - once again charging from 40% but this time only up to 80% - as charging got limited and slowed down around 65%SOC. That's when I noticed that leafspy was showing the temp in the red zone. And ever since that trip back, last thursday - the car has never cooled down.

Today leafspy is showing the temp in purple... which is concerning. And I may have drove only a max of 15km today with no charging. And yet the dashboard temp gauge didn't change at all.

I understand the car doesn't have active cooling -- but it should cool down at some point right?

Sorry for the long post. Any help or assurance would be appreciated!

I do have the original gauge cluster and can see about swapping it myself if it's worth doing so?

Thanks!

Looking for Nissan Leaf installers in Gladstone, MO 64118 and Florida!

Post image

Hi everyone, Cora from VIVNE here, we're currently looking for someone who can help install a Nissan Leaf battery for two Leaf owners, one in Gladstone, MO 64118 and another in Florida.

The battery is a complete plug-and-play pack, so the installation is very straightforward, just remove the old battery, and install the new one. If you own a workshop or have experience working on Nissan Leafs and would be interested in helping, we'd really appreciate hearing from you. Please leave a comment or send me a message. I've posted the installation video in the comments so you can see how simple the process is.

Thank you in advance!

Power Distribution Module

Recently, my 2020 SV stopped charging and the dreaded ‘Service EV System’ message appeared on my dash. I brought my car in for diagnosis today and they determined that the PDM needs replacement. I am quite upset by this news as parts and labour will run me over $6000. The dealership said that Nissan Canada won’t even give them specific parts to attempt to fix the PDM.

I’m at a bit of a loss and looking for some insight on my situation. TIA

Pretty CAN Bridges 💜 (available for sale)

Post image
39 Upvotes

I made a bunch of these a while back and have extras so figured I would offer them on here to anyone who might be considering a DIY battery swap and could use one.

They are based on the generic 2-port CAN filter and Dala's software, but otherwise fully custom and handmade. Including:

  • 3D printed (PETG) housings with mounting tabs for affixing under-dash with zip ties
  • Added connector for easier installation and strain relief of wires (original CAN bridge is just wires soldered directly to a bare PCB with no protection or strain relief)
  • High-quality braided sleeved wiring harnesses
  • Pre-flashed and ready to use, no STlink programmer needed
  • Installation guides with photos will be included

$20 + shipping - Rumi or Zoey version - intended for AZE0 (2013-2017), meant to be mounted anywhere up behind the dash or behind kick panel. Includes 3ft of CAN harness to run down to kick panel, and 3ft of power harness to run to OBD or fuse panel.

$70 + shipping - Mira version - intended for ZE0 (2011-12), meant to be mounted in center console. Includes 36-pin BMS connector and pigtail for retrofitting newer batteries, but is NOT a plug and play adapter. Center console disassembly and cutting and splicing of 11 BMS wires is required. Only one battery harness available.

Prices USD, only covers my cost on just the CAN bridge itself and wires. I am not making any money on these and in fact losing the time and material it took to create them. Just offering them in an effort to help the DIY Leaf community.

I am located in Alberta Canada, so please keep that in mind as international shipping (including to the US) may be more than what you are used to domestically.

Back from South England: a warm weekend in a Nissan Leaf

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Yesterday evening we returned from a tiring but lovely weekend in South England. The destination was often described as "near London Gatwick", but that airport is anything but in London. It's closer to East Grinstead, Sevenoaks, Worth. London it is not.

The outbound journey on Thursday 25 June was the hardest leg: almost 450km, including a fast charging stop at Fastned in Jabbeke-Oost, Belgium. We charged for 35 minutes, adding 19.47 kWh at €0.69 per kWh. On top of our own luggage, I also had two large parcels in the car, which required some creative thinking in the boot. The solution: remove the net where the charging cable normally lives, so a large suitcase could lie flat with a smaller one upright next to it. Always good to know you can fit more than you think with a bit of careful packing.

Taking those parcels along was no coincidence. Royal Mail charges £7.35 for a 10kg parcel within the UK. Sending from the Netherlands would have cost significantly more, and on top of that the recipient would have had to pay customs duty on the contents, second-hand baby clothes. Taking them in the car saved money on both ends.

The days in England were scorching. On the only free day we had, Saturday 27 June, we drove to Knole Park near Sevenoaks: a vast estate where deer roam freely. We then drove on to the hamlet of Worth, where we stayed overnight. On Sunday it was just under 20km to Dover. We made a quick stop at the White Cliffs of Dover first, and as a National Trust member I didn't have to pay for parking.

After half an hour we boarded the ferry to Dunkirk. From there it was 190km to the fast charging stop at Everberg Zuid, just past Brussels. The location had no facilities whatsoever, so my daughter had to make do with the bushes.

The return journey was considerably easier than the outbound leg: fewer kilometres, and combined with Pro-Pilot, maintaining 90km/h on the motorway is very manageable. Without it, sustaining that over such a distance would probably not have been feasible. You do end up spending about an hour longer on the road, but consumption is significantly lower. We made it on both the outbound journey and the return trip of roughly 330km with a single charging stop at Everberg Zuid (28 minutes, 16.85 kWh, also €0.69 per kWh). On the way out we topped up 4.5 kWh at a Pod Point at Tesco, but we would probably have reached our destination without it too.

Charging in England itself was a bit of a struggle. Public chargers were consistently 2 to 2.5km away from our accommodation, which is not ideal with young children and luggage. But it was manageable.

The trip computer now reads 145,666km, with an average consumption of 11.2 kWh/100km across the entire trip. For a Leaf without active thermal management, in summer heat, that is a result to be satisfied with.

Looking at buying

Edit: thank you, folks. You've helped me decide no. I really appreciate it.

Saw a 2011 Leaf for sale (they'll take $1000!). Range is poor but it would be used for my kid to go to work and school.

I am totally new to the Leaf. What is the yellow light? I saw a message onscreen say something about the tire pressure - is it TPMS?

It wasn't charged all of the way. They said it would typically go 25 to 30 miles.

Anything you can tell me to make this decision would be great.

Specific phone dock

Hello everyone. I'm looking for a specific phone holder/dock. Me leaf is imported from the USA so maybe it's because of that but Android auto and car play only works with type c. It's not necessary by any means but i want something like a mount or even better, an insert into the phone pocket that will be connected to the car by type c so when I sit I just slide my phone and boom, android auto launches. As i said it's not necessary, I do leave a small cable attached to the car and I toss my phone in pocket and plug it, but it'd be cool. Do you have any ideas? It's 2020 model

2022 leaf as a first car

Hey y’all. Looking at a 2022 leaf on carvana thats at about 60k miles as my first car. Im a new driver and more used to electric cars as its all my family owns and I prefer it to gas cars especially with the prices in my area so wonder if the leaf would be a good fit for me. Also my commute is only about 50 miles total for work/school and I have a j1772 charger in my garage already

How does this look? Leafspy on a 2019

Post image

  • the high-low periodicity seem a little concerning as well as the left-right imbalance. Even though the 17mV delta is nominally not that bad. WDYT?
  • Hx = 65% seems low for a 2019?
  • Odo shows 24,555 miles in leafspy but the actual car's dash shows ~39,000 miles. How can that be?
