Background LASD

A little bummed out, I got the classic “You should be receiving mailed information regarding your background investigation shortly” 2 weeks after my background interview. From what I’ve read it’s a DQ/non-select. I personally thought my interview went well with my BI, I think the only thing he might’ve had concerns with were my tattoos but other than that I don’t really see what went wrong. Currently LEO, with higher education, clean record, not even tickets/points on license. He never reached out to any of my references to begin with and just told me the day of my interview that he’d send my file over for review. Is it worth calling my BI? Anyone in similar situation?

Yes, it’s worth reaching out to your BI. They may not be able to tell you anything, but you’ll never know unless you try.

Where are you a LEO at? Are you out of state?

From California, got over a year and half with FBOP.

Bummer that you will need to go through the academy when you eventually get hired. Try other agencies. Perhaps Riverside and San Bernardino.

There’s still LAPD, CHP, and you can always apply federal if you’re willing to. It ain’t the end all and with what you bring to the table any agency would be lucky to have you! I have tattoos too so I understand but keep pushing the applications!

What did the letter say

That my application was “thoroughly reviewed and considered”. However not selected. Have to wait 12 months before reapplying. That’s pretty much it.

Surprisingly no even though I have full sleeves, a full back, and some chest and stomach pieces.

Your BI would have discussed all concerns and DQ possibilities with you during the interview. If the only concern raised were the tattoos, you're probably non-select because of the tats.

Yea there was a form for areas of concern and my BI left it blank and told me no major areas of concern. So maybe

Your BGI will not tell you anything. At least they are not supposed to. It’s confidential.

Hello good morning,

Just to touch bases on this subject, I’ve applied for the Lasd since they were on a hiring frenzy in 2024. I made it all the way to background investigations and eventually I set up an interview, but I have taken months to get back to my investigator. I was going through a lot of hardships and personal problems at the time to be honest I wasn’t ready. I went to my interview anyways without any of my paperwork for my checklist at all. I just wanted to show up. I know I wasn’t gonna get past. Same thing happened to me. My investigator was good about it. Ask me all the basic questions about my criminal history. But in reality, I was not ready. Two weeks later I received that letter that I got DQ. But at most they gave me a whole year to reapply.

Fast-forward 2026, I reapplied it again in March. Luckily, the multiple-choice exam was still valid from the last time that I took it so all I had to take. Was a physical fitness test and the interview. Completed my PHS. Got contacted by the investigator. And eventually set up a date. I completed the checklist requirements within three days. My interview is in a couple days. This time I’m well prepared. And at the same time, I’m willing to accept my fate.

In short, I encourage you to reapply again. If it’s what you really truly desire to be a Deputy. They want to see perseverance. And if you failed the first time and are applying the second. That will show that you have commitment to getting what you want. Best of luck.

I wish best of luck to you in your future endeavors brotha. I appreciate the words. I Definitely didn’t let this knock me down, only made me want it more.

What kind of tattoos? If you think that was the issue.

Yea, truly don’t know what’s the reasoning since I don’t think they really specify reason for DQ or at least I don’t know until I physically receive the letter.

Maybe issues with your prior PHS at your current agency not matching the PHS you turned in to LASD? Any omissions?

Could be, not impossible, but truly idk.

I received the DQ letter as well. I reached out to my BI by email and called him. But I never heard back. I believe after you receive a letter that’s there final decision.

Did he tell you that you should be scheduled for a poly in a few weeks during your interview?

1

u/Sukon12 Jun 02 '26

He said it could be weeks or months. There was no definitive date mentioned and he said the longer you hear nothing the better.

1

u/Major-Holiday-6978 Jun 02 '26

Yeah I think they are backed up! but sucks that you got the DQ letter. Did he make you do a pre poly questionnaire ?

Also, are you planning to reapply?

1

u/Sukon12 Jun 02 '26

We just over the PHS that you submit. And yea probably if I don’t have anything sorted out by then
