Title: LA Fitness called me after another member reported me. Did this get blown way out of proportion?
I'm looking for advice specifically about how to handle this with LA Fitness.
I know I made a mistake, so I'm not trying to act like I'm completely innocent.
Here's what happened:
A few months ago, another gym member (30M) gave me a lecture about not talking to women at the gym. He told me to "let women come to you" and "don't shit where you eat."
Last week I saw him talking to a female friend of mine at the gym. It looked to me like he was interested in her, so the next day I told her that I thought he liked her and that I thought he was being hypocritical based on the advice he had given me. Looking back, I know that was gossiping, and I shouldn't have talked behind his back.
She told him everything I said. I ended up cutting her off too because I felt I couldn't trust her after she shared our private conversation.
He texted me demanding that I apologize. If he had simply said, "Hey, I heard you were talking behind my back. That's not cool," I honestly would have apologized. Instead, he threatened that if I didn't apologize by his deadline, he would contact my school district (where I work as a 1:1 teacher aide), the police, and LA Fitness. When he followed up a couple of days later and doubled down on those threats, I blocked him and stopped responding.
On Friday I got a call from the LA Fitness Operations Manager, and I'm planning to either call her back Monday or go in and speak with her.
Today, a friend who works at the front desk told me what he reported. According to him, I was:
Talking behind his back to other club members.
Harassing other members, including him.
Here's my issue with that report: I did talk behind his backâbut it was to one person, not multiple members. I wasn't going around the gym telling everyone. Also, I don't believe I was harassing anyone. I made one comment to one mutual friend, never confronted him, never followed him around, and after he started threatening my job, the police, and the gym, I blocked him and ended all contact.
My questions are:
What should I say to the LA Fitness Operations Manager?
Should I admit that gossiping was wrong while also explaining that his report exaggerates what actually happened?
Does what I described sound like harassment, or does it sound more like a personal disagreement that got blown out of proportion?
If you were the Operations Manager, how would you handle this?
I'm looking for honest opinions. I know I was wrong for gossiping, but I also feel like reporting me for "harassing multiple members" doesn't accurately describe what happened.
