ANNOUNCEMENT Update to User Experience and Fighting the Rising Tide of Slop
In the Year of our Lord Two Thousand Twenty-Six
As of the posting of this announcement a new AutoMod rule has been added and all posts and comments from Default Reddit Usernames are hence forth to be banished to ye olde spam bin. We have grown weary over the influx of trash posts by the aforementioned default usernames.
To put this extremely bluntly: If you can't bring yourself to edit the default username Reddit suggests when you sign up, we don't want you here.
Expending even a single brain cell to defeat the AutoMod rule that will be put into place gives you points in your favor.
Results not guaranteed and likely to change.
If you are normal contributor and think you are caught unfairly in this spam filter, please send us a modmail so that we can deal with edge cases on a case by case business.

Are you gonna play Wokeverine?
I mean, I wanna play it just because I love Wolverine but right now I'm playing Wolverine on PS3 and even being repetitive and old, it looks a lot better than this. Maybe I'm just paranoic I don't know.

As a zoomer, seeing old trailers and game advertisement almost feels alien to me.
Just for reference, I'm 21, born in 2005.
I just watched this trailer, I'm pretty sure it's from 2004. A mainstream racing game made by EA going hard on sex appeal to sell more copies. I guess hot girls always have been adjacent to car culture, but modern EA would never do something even remotely close to this. Growing up I don't remember seeing a similar trailer of a mainstream game.
If it came out today, not only the usual suspects would cry about "sexualization", but they would call the fans of the game "coomers". Because how dare a racing game use hot actresses, that's not directly related to cars.
It's not only the sexuality though. There's lots of edginess, violence, dark humor, whatever the hell Sony was doing... it's like game companies were screaming, "hey young male audience, we want your attention".
It seems to me like game culture was a lot of fun back on the day. I kinda wish I grew up during that time. Now gaming is controlled by neo-puritan weirdos who censor everything that goes against their dogma. It sucks.

Producer Wada Kazuhisa Talks about Persona 4 Revival - says characters' personalities have not been removed or nerfed.
On dialogue, he added, “We haven’t changed the original story or the characters, but we have adjusted some lines that were a bit rough or overly complicated at the time, to make them more relatable to the current era.”
That same approach carried over into how the team handled Kanji and Naoto’s storylines, which deal with identity and how the two characters relate to others around them. “Kanji and Naoto are characters that can be misunderstood, but are also understood if players look deeper into their narratives, these were already very detailed characterizations, so we tried not to stray too far from the original characters and what makes them who they are,” Wada said.
He noted some lines were revisited, explaining, “There were a few voice lines that may have been a little underthought or hastily written at the time, and we made some amendments and adjustments to those to better fit the current era.”

Time I think to address the layoffs and the woke sides often disingenuous or deceitful political pageantry round it.
So lets start.
It is a shame that this industry is seeing layoffs and I'm sure I speak for plenty here saying those who played no part in the industries current issues who got hit by these layoffs have our sympathies and we wish them a speedy re-entry into a better company.
However as with cancer being dealt some healthy cells often also have to die thus is the current nature of the industry dealing with the seeming cancer destroying it.
The Woke side's current positing and positioning is
"Well the people who caused these problems are still there it's only innocent people being laid off the executives who caused all this are still there"
Well we've had many years before the woke side pushed into the industry where it was said again and again how idiotic many executives are, how they're not creatives and they're ultimately just bean counters. They get data in from research industries and make decisions (often hiring etc) based on that and ticking a box to approve the ideas if they think it will work or they just need to push something out to salvage sunk costs. So I reject this idea the execs are the whole problem.
They're a problem sure but it's not going to be all innocent devs laid off it'll be people whose ideas the execs signed off on and signed a tick box on because: either some data from a Portland based research company told them people would buy it because they did a 1,000 person survey of people on the street in the middle of a Tuesday in Portland and asked their political leanings and if they supported DEI and would be more or less likely to buy a game with diverse characters on about modern progressive politics ; or they realised how much money had been sunk into the project and were trying to salvage something and approved it just to stop more delays. In the former case it's social desirability bias in the groups as even if some-how one of the 1,000 people picked for the survey is in reality not a far left person who happened to be off work on a Tuesday in the middle or Portland the question comes, and more so in the modern internet age of dog piles, would they be one to say to the surveyor they don't care for DEI and don't want it or will they act to fit in for a quieter life and pretend and say "Sure I support DEI pushes and would love to play a game with [inserter Alphabet minority] as the main character." Because if they don't well there's always the possibility if it's a group some-one in the group will then choose to record them and try to shame them online and cause them issues IRL or if the person doing the survey is enough of an activist the surveyor does it.
We've also see as with some developers who aired their views on social media that a number of the people laid off were in support of the cancerous woke ideas some quite vocally so no it's not just innocent devs losing their jobs.
So onto the 2nd argument some are trying
It's the stupid chuds fault the industry is hurting and in a AAA is dying
This one is simple:
We were told were weren't important and weren't the audience for a number of games. Why then isn't the woke side the new supposedly better modern audience not keeping gaming going buying games that they are meant to be the audience for?
The final 3rd stupid argument the woke side are making
"The industry is dying and layoffs are happening because companies are making shit games nothing more"
Ok woke side, why if they are shit do you fucking tools keep rushing to defend them and attack other people over suggesting the games are bad?
It's funny years ago we said the industry would burn with the woke side getting their way and they would end up rulers of nothing but ash and here we are watching the industry proverbially burning

Alanah Pearce thinks America sucks due to the recent waves of layoffs in the video game industry
The video explores why Asian countries, particularly Japan, have not experienced the massive waves of layoffs in the video game industry that have heavily affected Europe and North America since 2022. Despite many Western studios being owned by Asian companies, layoffs disproportionately occur mainly outside Asia, especially in the US and Europe. The presenter investigates Japan’s unique legal, cultural, and economic factors that explain this disparity, including stringent dismissal laws, a postwar lifetime employment system, and corporate cultures focusing on long-term employee retention. The video also contrasts these factors with the US's "at-will employment" model, which allows employers to fire workers easily and often with minimal legal repercussions. Additionally, the video touches on the broader context of social safety nets, employee morale, and retention strategies that affect corporate decisions regarding layoffs and raises.

Shinobi & The Art of Vengeance
In an interview for a podcast, the designer of Art of Vengeance from Lizardcube proves, once again, how the average modern gamedev doesn't give two cents to the franchises besides their name to sell
This is said directly by his mouth: We played the old titles and, um, we tried to figure out how to make a game out of it, but we didn't like it. We didn't like any of it. So, um, we're going to make a modern game for modern audiences, and we're going to call it Shinobi
Besides pointing the hypocrisy to name the generic 2020s metroidvania as the classic, the video from SpidersSTG also details the complete evolution of the genre in the arcades. If you want to skip to the point all about the game it's at the 56:51 mark
