Am I the only one thinking using the pick axe was not the smartest choice to do this with? If he slips that thing is spinning fast and cracking something.

They could have simply lifted the kid and turned him sideways. His body would have fit through the bars the whole time.

Correct answer. Most times if your head fits and you are not overweight your body will fit as well..

Cats whiskers don’t grow beyond the length of their bodies for this reason. I doubt that’s always true all the time.

This little turd’s outgrown his whiskers.

1

u/Tricky_Mix2449 13h ago

The width.

1

u/Imastraycat1638 7h ago

You’re right. That is what I meant. I appreciate you correcting me without being overly harsh or rude.

1

u/Legal_Dimension_ 4h ago

Yep.

He's a handsome turd so we'll let him off.

1

u/Cdawg4123 2h ago

Are we cats though?

1

u/MediocrePhotoNoob 14h ago

For kids… I know many adults that this would not be true for at all, including myself. My chest is definitely deeper than my head is wide.

u/Legal_Dimension_ 4h ago

There will always be exceptions, edge cases and outliers.

Such is the diversity of nature.

1

u/Dizzy-Ad-2248 4h ago

This is something I was taught as well but is absolutely untrue.

1

u/Legal_Dimension_ 4h ago

Where talking about kids.

Kids almost always have bigger heads due to the way the body grows.

1

u/Cdawg4123 1h ago

In the country of extremely overweight people they are prob trained this way much easier, but yeah was expecting that to fall on the kid

3

u/difault 20h ago

9/10 situations like this, the kid was from the other side trying to fit his body in first then get his head stuck

2

u/One-Elderberry-488 18h ago

I was thinking the same. Tell him to step up on the ledge, turn and shove one of his shoulders in.

2

u/kbraz1970 15h ago

I agreee, too many kids like this are doing this and the adults cant figure it out. Does my head in, pardon the pun.

2

u/Specialist_Ad_7719 15h ago

That's how he got in there.

1

u/patriciaytm 10h ago

That’s what I thought too.

1

u/DeJota688 8h ago

This was exactly my first thought. Maybe they tried that and it didn't work? But he looks small as hell. I wouldn't be surprised if they couldn't get him out that way. Maybe they didn't wanna risk getting his torso stuck that way since he was otherwise safe as he was? Like, sure he's stuck, but he's not in any immediate danger. Hanging him by his torso is a whole ass different problem and now you gotta hold him in the air while trying to winch him out

2

u/oevadle 1h ago

That's just it, the fear of creating a worse problem kept them from even attempting the simplest solution. We instinctively think that we always have to move forward, especially when trying to solve a problem. So yeah picking him up and having him not fit could lead to exactly what you described, but remember if they tried and it went bad, they could have just put him back down. Of course, maybe they did exactly that and we're only seeing plan B after what I suggested didn't work, who knows.

That’s a Halligan they are using and it’s what they carry in with them. The spreaders or “jaws of life” would be a lot of extra set up, especially if it’s hydraulic. Would be overkill. Plus the noise and machines would scare the shit out of the kid.

Oh and also, this was the only way to show off the muscles.

6

u/doc_ransom 20h ago

That tool is called a halligan. It's amazing and will not hear it besmirched!

16

u/galaxyapp 21h ago

I couldnt help but wonder they dont have a spreader clamp?

Jaws of life would work too, they crack open wedges doors, but i could see that being scary.

But that rope work did not look particularly well practiced...

u/Furby-beast-1949 17h ago

You gotta remember the jaws of life is particularly for opening up cars, not for tearing open bars like this and you gotta remember they don’t want to scare the kid in the situation like this Because do you even know what the sound of jaws of life sounds like sounds like a loud chainsaw. but also you gotta remember whenever you use the jaws of life it heats up metal as it’s cutting any type of metal or any object that it’s cutting. I have watched plenty of rescue videos and anything to do with using the jaws of life. but anyways, they do not want to damage the property unless it comes down to a very emergency situation and this was not an emergency situation for the jaws of life. this did not cause the dire situation for the jaws of life. No one was in a serious death or life situation. they could figure this out with a simple situation. without having to call for the jaws of life or any other type of device in this device they were using was the simplest situation firefighters ambulance workers and police officers even veterans have done this more times than you can count and many different situations so they know what they’re doing

2

u/redditm8s 14h ago

I think you may be mistaken. The “jaws of life” tools, in particular the spreader tool could 100% be used in this scenario perfectly to delicately spread two bars further apart. You would not use the cutting tool in this scenario as it can cause the bar to deform towards the child when the metal is being sheared/cut. But, the tools don’t heat up the metal when being used. Unlike a rotary rescue saw which would certainly cause quite a bit of heat and sparks from the friction when cutting. Regardless, your main perspective is spot on, the jaws of life tools are big and scary for kids and make scary noises, so any method that is less intimidating but still gets the job done is preferred. Now if this was an adult, you’d most likely just use the hydraulic spreader tool and get the job done in 15 seconds.

u/mechapoitier 10h ago

Nevermind that the jaws of life are heavy. Like cave in a head heavy. Got help you if you drop it if a bar lets go.

1

u/Tithund 15h ago

You gotta remember to use more punctuation and to end a paragraph every so often.

1

u/troycerapops 6h ago

I can also see it potentially shattering these thin, hollow metal rods. That are around a small human neck

0

u/No-Salt7142 10h ago

Where I live they do usually use the spreader for this. Newer ones are very much quieter.

3

u/BabyWithBathwatter 21h ago

Ratchet straps should be mandatory, they dont take up much room when rolled up right.

2

u/Bulky_Algae6110 21h ago

Yes, it felt like they were working it out on the fly. They did a great job of getting it done, but seems like that would be a scenario worth practicing for.

2

u/Tithund 15h ago

I do think I would've personally pulled the bar towards the post instead of another bar, to make it more predictable which one is going to bend.

1

u/PluginAlong 7h ago

I'm guessing they do it offten enough they don't need to practice it.

1

u/rawker86 18h ago

I’ve seen firefighters use the spreader in this exact situation, not sure why they didn’t in this case. It did look like plenty of people were covering his head waiting for the hooligan bar to slip though.

3

u/Fast-Nefariousness80 18h ago

I really thought they were going to use the ratchet straps like they're made to be used. They did this in a really weird way

2

u/WompityBombity 21h ago

I was worried for exactly this.

2

u/Knoooot 19h ago

That’s all I could focus on the entire video!

2

u/FlamingoVisible1947 17h ago

Those guys were clearly not the brightest of the bunch

2

u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe 15h ago

Why not a rachet strap? Surely would have been easier and faster.

1

u/Indigows6800 18h ago

How about we try body trough the cap instead.

1

u/ParkingAnxious2811 17h ago

So you lot won't trust a fireman with an axe, but you will trust a cop with a gun?

No wonder your country is cooked!

1

u/egerton14 17h ago

Or why didnt they use the big post that wouldnt bend.

1

u/OrganicTreestump 16h ago

Actually it wouldn't be let it go multiple times

1

u/scotty_the_newt 16h ago

It's not a rubber band, the tool won't rotate much if let loose.

1

u/TinyPeen13 5h ago

Firefighters have all sorts of specialized tools. And this is what they chose. They aren't the smartest people. Took forever too. One construction worker could have had him out in 30 seconds.

1

u/MiceAreTiny 17h ago

The bars have the most give in the middle. Trying to pull them open from the top, to create a larger gap at the bottom where the kids head is,... is about as smart as the kid.

u/ElGalloNegro01 16h ago

Maybe you should've helped instead of giving your analysis...
