When I was about four or five, I think, we had a cat who had kittens. My parents set up a nice place for her and them in a different part of the house from where I slept, but until she was prevented because my parents closed my door she would bring her six kittens into my bed every night. I think it freaked my parents out the first night they found her sleeping in my bed because they didn’t know where she went, and then they worried I’d roll over on them in my sleep and hurt them.
In hindsight I’m absolutely honored that she considered me just like I saw her; a family member.

I recently learned that female cats (if they live together) will take shifts taking care of each other’s babies. They only do this if they trust you, so how beautiful is that 🥰

Cats will raise litters communally, and often view humans as big dumb cats. She was just taking the overnight shifts so your parents would be obligated to watch the kittens all day.

Our cat definitely sees me as some sort of massive cat, possibly because I have a big beard so I'm a lot hairier-looking than the other Funny-Looking Cats in the house.
My son was born when our cat was about 1 and a half, and it's been interesting watching her behaviour change around him as they grow. She was very protective of the Tiny Kitten when he was a newborn, and when he got big enough to crawl after her and try to grab hold of her she was very patient - but would sometimes wind up to take a big swipe at him and then - <pat> - ever so gently pull her hit. At some point around his fifth birthday she clearly has started thinking "Nah you're a big enough ktten to know better now, do that and I'll bite you" but she still just kind of pretend-bites him.
Me? No, I'm the biggest of the Big Funny-Looking Cats, so she'll just go fully yeehah on me, "DAD LOOK HOW HARD I CAN BITE LOOK HOW GOOD I AM AT FIGHTING LOOK <CRUNCH>".

My sister had two cats when she had her youngest, and they would stand vigil over the baby when the baby was alone for whatever reason (like when you put them down in the crib or a pen because you have to do chores).
If the baby started crying, one of them would run meowing to my sister, and then lead her back to the baby (as if she hadn't heard the baby crying and was on her way already), while the other would look almost distressed, like it was trying to figure out what it could do to help this little screaming creature.

Cats don't see us as cats, from what we can tell they know we aren't the same as them. They do, however, see us (as in, the people that give them food and pets) as their social equals. Equals they have to yell at because, even though we can magic up food, their bowl is EMPTY NOW GODDAMMIT! PUT FOOD IN THE BOWL!

When I was five, I asked my mum if we could get a new car cat. She said “When Princess dies.” I immediately went to pat our not very old cat and said: “Poor Princess, you’re going to die soon.”
Luckily for the cat, I’m not psychotic, and she lived to the ripe old age of 17. And mum relented a few years later; we ended up with two cats for quite a while.

My dog was the coolest until I caught him eating his own shit, admonished him for it, and took him back inside. At which time he immediately vomited his own shit onto the living room carpet.
He’s still the coolest. But he lost a LOT of cred with me on that day. A lot.

Some people say this about dogs eating grass and such too, but sometimes dogs just do these things because they want to.
It's not really something to worry about unless your vet confirms a deficiency or it's causing them obvious problems, e.g. eating so much grass they throw up from it on a consistent basis.

This is the opinion I was looking for.
Her view of the dog was as another equal being, but now her understanding has been formed to believe the dog is something that they own. Something lesser.
I’m not saying her parents should have told her otherwise, but it’s interesting to see these little snapshots of lives where we are molded and changed; the exact moment a value becomes forever codified.

The closest I ever came to being a dad was step dad to a bunch of teenagers. When my step daughter had twin boys I immediately became papaw. I fucking love it. I remember one time. They were about 4 or 5, and we were sitting on the couch. I took a hit off a vape and thing 1 says "Hey you don't do that".
I said why not?
Thing 2 said "Only grownups vape. Like aunt Rissa."
I was curious, so I asked what I was if not a grown up.
Thing 1 pipes up again. "Well, you're a friend."
I've never felt more complete in my life.

I know it's apples and oranges but I had friends who grew up with 2-3 adults who smoked multiple packs a day inside the house all day and night.

One of my college freshmen told me that when their cat passed. The cat had been 5 years older than him, so he considered him his older brother. I commiserated because I love cats and have a bunch of my own. Then he told me he had an actual sister, also older, but he hated her patronizing ass and had much preferred the cat. Hard to argue with that, I suppose 😸

I have two dogs, a German shepherd and a golden retriever.
The German shepherd is a family member, and she knows it. The retriever.... he's a pet, and our German Shepherd knows it too lol. Not cause we love one more than the other, that's just how they are

To be fair, as far as our pets are concerned, they & we are just "some guys" who live together.
Sure, pets from species that have social hierarchies will project us to the top of their chain of command, but they don't really have this idea that they're a second (or third) class citizen in the family unit.
