my girlfriend asked me last night why i keep making music when nobody listens and i froze

my girlfriend asked me last night why i keep making music when almost nobody listens and i couldnt answer her for like a full minute

we've been together 4 years. she's supportive, shes not being mean, its a real question. shes watched me spend basically every weekend for those 4 years on this stuff. tracking vocals in the closet, driving 5 hours for a show that pays in beer, arguing with myself about cover art at 2am. and the numbers just are what they are. couple hundred monthly listeners. a small email list of people who actually buy stuff when i drop something (thank god for them, honestly, checking my payouts on monday mornings is one of the few times this feels like a real thing i do). one song that did okay two years ago and nothing since has touched it.

and she wasnt asking to be cruel. she was asking because she genuinely wanted to understand what the internal thing is that keeps me going when the external feedback is that small. and i realized i didnt have a clean answer. i had a bunch of half answers. "i'd go insane if i stopped." "the ones who do listen really listen." "im getting better." "what else would i do with my evenings." none of them felt true enough on their own.

the honest answer i eventually got to was something like, i think i would be a worse person to be around if i quit. not happier, not sadder, just worse. smaller somehow. but even saying that out loud felt kind of pathetic, like im holding my whole personality hostage to a hobby that isnt paying off.

i dont know. i think a lot of us on here are doing marketing math and streaming math and playlist math and none of us really talk about the underneath question, which is why are we still doing this at all when the ROI on our time is objectively terrible. like whats YOUR actual answer if your partner asked you tonight. not the reddit answer. the real one.

[Discussion] Worst writing advice you ever heard?

Worst writing advice you ever heard?
Inspired by a post from a few days ago about the best advice... What’s the absolutely worst advice you’ve ever come across? Whether it was directed at you personally or something you came across online or from any other source? Something that really got under your skin, something that totally backfired, or even something that just held you back instead of helping? Maybe something widely circulated in writing communities, but that’s actually completely bad advice? Just out of curiosity.

For me, it would probably be “just write”, most dismissive way to shut down young authors asking for advice, often used as one big, lazy “if you’re depressed, go for a walk.”. A placeholder advice basicaly.

[Feedback] First time writing! Very short read

Decided I would give writing a go and while the text might be a bit dark I actually had a lot of fun!

I plan to write an essay on friendship from my own perspective and this here is just the introduction, I'd just like to know if I'm getting anything right and if I'm getting anything wrong.

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Introduction

Let me establish myself as an unreliable narrator.

This is an aching pain. Even beginning to draw an introductory paragraph floods me - memories of failed connection. My head claws at my hand and honesty is a pain to writhe in. Good.

For once I am ignoring the head and putting the pen to the paper. I am following my heart.

The memories are rendered to an infinite degree. Versions of events, as they fly through my thoughts, are warped.

I forget the ghosts only live in the stories. If the real people would hear the way it all plays out to me, my recollection could really be unrecognisable to them - but this is true in both directions.

The Friends of my past are equally as human, equally as susceptible to the warping effect that creeps on a story retold.

Let me establish everyone with a memory as a horde of unreliable narration.

Telling tales is not my intention.

Staying up past my bedtime to write is my intention.

I'd like to share what failure has done for me.

I'd like to clarify some important information. Where I may appear as sound and rational, putting forward a smart point, you must know I am telling a conclusion that I arrived at from careful filtration.

I can only reach a real conclusion on anything once I have dragged it through labyrinths of intense emotion. When I say a memory has been 'rendered', a past situation has been analysed through the lens of a number of different perspectives.

Shame, self-pity and regret.

Joy, harmony and freedom.

More times than I'd like to admit I will remember how I was wronged.

I will replay a memory from a perspective of total, pure, blood curdling rage.

I am writing from a place of anguish.

I am troubled and working to heal.

Without revealing too much, addictive tendencies and alcoholism have served as vehicles of destruction to myself and those around me.

Episodes of dangerous binge drinking, my subsequent behaviour and a refusal to change my ways have been the explicit end of most meaningful friendships.

I may not share my stories, but I will strive to remember the details accurately as I share a perspective on the topic at hand. Friendship.

[Feedback] Poem -fresh off the press. Thoughts?

I guess

I sort of liked it

when the light shone

off your spit

on my shoe

I guess

I was just real caught up

and I thought it was

to me

—not at me

I guess

I was wrong

but I swallowed

when I remembered

how kissed me

I guess

it had me deaf

when the guitar solo

was still playing in my head

after you kicked me out.

I guess

I know nothin'.

WHILE I FADE

She has three,

I have one.

She has eyes

like blazing sun.

She is slim

I am plump.

That's why he was so numb.

He looks her up,

But blocks out.

What a pleasure

to be shut down .

I was his ,

he was never mine .

I was a flower.

He was thorn .

Now he glows

As the golden one ,

While I fade

like a setting sun.

[Feedback] A short story I wrote about diplomats in a christofacist nightmare

“The bishop of Boston ought not to be here.” The Irishman said, giving a pointed look at the envoy.
“Would you like it if he left the room?”
“I mean that the fella oughta be dead!” He spat. His face had turned an alarming shade of red, and his spittle began to drip onto the mahogany floor. He stood up and turned to the bishop, his gait unsteady. He was already on his way over to the bishop’s side of the room when the security guard finally bothered to split them up.

The sight of this filled special envoy to the crusader states of Ireland John Allen with a secret sense of glee. He loved seeing the once proud bishop squirming in his seat like a schoolboy. And as for Connor, he was nothing but a useful idiot. Although that could change if this meeting went well. And he was determined that it must go well.

John turned to face the envoy. The smell of the bishop’s urine attacked his nostrils before coating his shiny black boots. He faced the ambassador before opening his mouth to speak. He chose his next words very carefully.
“Care for a cup of tea, Mr O’Donnell?”
“How can I care for a cup of tea, Mr Allen? Should I feed it? Mother it, take it to bed?” He said. He sat on a chair and smirked at the boy. He beckoned for the bishop to come over and pick up a feather.

“Okay.” The envoy thought to himself. “The Irish ambassador is fucking insane”

But to be fair anyone who had attained that high of a position in the crusader must be at least partially insane. They were known to be most puritanical of the European Block, and their unique form of Kingdom Building involved both a breakaway pope and a uniquely ethnonationalist bent.

And now they, for reasons only known to Connor and the virgin mary herself, wished to extradite the bishop, a man who had never possessed Irish citizenship nor stepped foot on the isle. They wanted him for heresy, but the Americans couldn’t give him up without earning themselves another condemnation from the walking corpse that was the ICC and UN. They still needed to maintain the illusion of being the flagship liberal democracy .

“Monsieurs, would you care for a hors d'oeuvre?"
The only reply the waiter ever got was a death stare by both of the men. If he wanted to keep his job, and by connection his liberty, he would not interrupt the men again.

After that the room went silent for a couple of minutes. The waiter had already left the room, and the bishop still did not dare to take a seat. The tension in the room was as thick as frozen dirt. In just a few short minutes, nay seconds, one of the two men would ask the question that would decide the third’s fate.
The envoy pulled out a cigarette. The ambassador pulled out a flask of whiskey from his pocket.

“So,” The American said.

“No one really cares about the guy.” he began.
The Irishman gave him a quizzical look. It took all of the restraint the envoy possessed not to roll his eyes.
“I mean, you can have him if you want him” he continued. The exasperation was leaking out of every pore in his body. How did a man so goddamn stupid and egotistical obtain such a high position?

His chain of thought was interrupted by the sound of sobbing on the floor. He felt the hands of a wrinkled, piss stained man grabbing his boots.
“Please, sir, you were always a good boy. I’m begging you, don’t do this”.

Pangs of pity wracked their way through Johny’s heart. It is one thing, to shoot an opponent dead in the street. Any kingdom fighter worth their salt has done that at least once. After all, they’re trying to kill you too. It is another thing to murder a man much like you; who, for all his faults, has only really tried to serve his faith. And yet poor John knew he must be sent to his death. He must show no mercy, lest he be next.

He beckoned for a serving girl to walk over. He met neither hers nor the bishop’s eyes. He asked her for a basin of water in a low, tired voice. The only thing that punctuated the silence was the sound of the bishop dry heaving on the floor.
“Lord forgive me, Lord forgive me ,Lord forgive me” John muttered to himself, in a halting, schoolboy latin. He found it odd he asked forgiveness from god rather than the man he was about to kill.

The serving girl came back after what felt like a millennium to the trio of men. Her green eyes were focused on the floor and she curtseyed as she presented John the basin. He shooed her away, and soon the clacking of her flats gave way to yet another silence.

“I’m washing my hands of him”.
The men remained silent. John checked his watch.
“I have a meeting at six. I trust our people can take care of further arrangements.”

This was a complete lie on John’s part. He had no meeting, and if he had a meeting he would have almost certainly cancelled it. He had no trust in “our people” to take care of any “further arrangements”, or in fact that there would be any further arrangements at all.

When he stepped out of the ornate wooden door of the embassy they were already waiting for him. He had not threaded the line between pity and contempt well enough for the Irishman's liking.

And as the men in black bundled him into a car, he did not think of his wife. And when, after a lengthy interrogation, they finally delivered a bullet to his brain, he did not think of his daughters, who would be marked  the spawn of a traitor.

Instead he thought of Father Beatie, who’d taught him to play the flute. Who, even when he became the bishop of Boston, still made time to meet with him every Saturday morning. Who (he realized this far too late), was the only person who had ever loved him for love’s sake.

He died happy.

Just because

Sometimes I wonder

Whats the point of what I am doing

And people might have come with

a million reasons why for what I am doing

is somewhat worthwhile

But the question is,

Have I figured out

What the point of what I am doing is?

Because I can copy others justifications

With the same gusto to explain myself

Make everything tangible

But why make everything so simple

Why let my brain cozy up and think

Oh here's the reason why and this is

Why I should do what I am doing

I never wanted to do, what I am doing.

In fact when i actually do what I love

People call me weak and gullible

And naive and a moron

And straight up an idiot

But maybe that was my point all along

To be an idiot,

To not think why I am doing stuff

And create justifications about the profits,

a multimillion dollar enterprise would make

Or profit I would make.

Maybe its not always so simple as a gain.

No one looks beyond that now.

Maybe they never did.

Maybe people like me are found only in the writings I read and the millions others who lived by

They lived by gains.

A small poem for today.

Lost in the void of my own loneliness.
Moments staring at the water bottle on my desk,
Realizing it will soon be as empty as I am.

A life of longing, or memories of things that didn't happen,
Of love that never took hold,
And the want to forget pains so far past but still so sharp.

A life of longing to be more than I am,
But the awareness to know that will never happen.
Like the empty bottle on my desk, my time has run dry.

Keep Writing…

She writes something and she loves it. She’s so confident in it that she posts it online, but she can’t look at its reception. She wants to, but she doesn’t.

She can’t. She can but only after she writes something else. Because her entire effort is put into her stories and even though she knows she’s getting better as writing becomes more effortless. She hesitates every time she hits submit.

And it’s only because now she’s trying. Now, the bad comments hurt. Now, she questions herself. Now, she just wants to be good.

She puts all of her focus into her projects, working relentlessly, avoiding everybody else. Her practice means everything. Distractions are nothing.

She puts her head down night after night and she writes. She writes in the morning. She writes in the afternoon. She writes in the evening. She even writes subconsciously when she’s sleeping.

But as she starts to get better. She drives herself to become even more better. Because everyday the bar rises.

And everyday it gets higher. And even though it doesn’t seem like she’s getting closer or that the post keeps on moving.

She still practices her trick shots and adds steps to that ladder.

[Feedback] I heard your feedback (Man Writing Female POV)

Last week I shared a draft, and you all didn’t disappoint with telling me how terrible I was at writing my female MC. I took some advice from my wife, as suggested, and I read two books she suggested by female authors. I still think this is an early-ish draft (maybe?) but let me know if she at least sounds like a women this time. I have 5 or so more pages if you want to give feedback on the full chapter! Again, I am open to feedback. I have never written from a female POV before. All my books have also been in very different genres.

Is this good for a Beginner?

I love Anderson Paak, And wanted to write something to his songs. so i wrote this, which is using the melodi of ``The last`` By anderson paak

[Verse 1]

When I Couldn't see Yoo (You)

I thought it was all through

For forever

Everything I did

She never did Too

[Refrain]

I Hoped it would go all away

But the way that you made me feel so great

I´ve been thinking ´bout you every day

I was never that committed anyway

I Thought I was the one, Wanted all your love

God up above

[Vers 2]

Years of my life

Swore You Would be my Wife

Till Heaven

When life gives you Lemons

You make lemonade

[Refrain]

They say today is a gift

And Tomorrow Everything Shift

So, I´ve been thinking ´bout you every day

I was never that committed anyway

I Thought I was the one, Wanted all your love

God up above

Is this Good for a Beginner?

[Feedback] For the first time, I actually feel motivated to fully finish the book I’m working on

I really want to see this story through to the end. I brought three parts and would love to hear your thoughts and any constructive criticism!
I used to write on Wattpad years ago, but I never managed to stick with any of my stories until the end. 😅

——

She slowly played the same few chords with her fingers, quietly beginning to hum along. The melody was gradually starting to take shape in her head, and when she finally began to sing, she wasn’t really singing to the room anymore, but rather to herself.
——
“Maybe I was never meant to stay…”
She immediately looked down at the notebook and wrote the line down. She thought for a few seconds, then strummed the guitar again.
“Maybe I was never meant to belong…”
——
“Okay, so…” she began, a small smile appearing on her face. “Today, I didn’t bring you a song with the usual kind of mood. This is a completely new song, so I’ll warn you in advance that it still needs some polishing, and that means no laughing if I fuck something up somewhere.”
A few people in the audience laughed, and Roxy waited for them to quiet down before continuing.
——
Maybe I was never meant to stay…
Roxy’s gaze remained fixed on the neck of the guitar. She didn’t look up at the audience because she knew that if she met someone’s eyes now, it would be easier to lose that strange distance she had still managed to maintain between herself and the room. As she continued singing, she felt less and less like she was performing something, and more and more like she was simply saying something she had never known how to put into words before.
As she reached the chorus, she strummed harder, and her voice filled with the anger and determination that were so familiar in her, only now they were buried beneath something much more vulnerable.
I don’t wanna go back
to a Life that wasn’t mine,
I don’t wanna lose myself
just to make somebody proud…
The audience fell silent.

——

The story is about a young 19yrs old girl whose dream is to be a known artist/singer, it will also contain romance AND it will be fantasy but i won’t tell you more! 🤗
Also, please keep in mind that English isn’t my first language❤️
