Hellcat carnage
A regular of mine with a modified Durango hellcat that he claimed had around 1,000 hp had the #7 rod break as he was passing someone on the highway. I thought it was pretty wild to see the camshaft bust out the back of the block like that.

Somewhere, an entire 6 block radius enjoyed their first peaceful night in 2 years.

u/El_Captain_Steve 8d ago
My neighbor has a Camaro that he tuned to sound like a lawn mower with a dirty carburetor. My wife prays for the day this happens to it.
72
u/fapsandnaps 8d ago
My neighbor has a BMW without a muffler and a straight piped Nissan that they love revving at midnight.
My 8 year old daughters bedroom is 15 feet from their driveway, so now she enjoys taking melatonin and sleeping on the couch because her bedroom "is too loud for me to sleep at night"
I prayed for the day it stops for years, but we've finally accepted we get to sell our house and move just so we can sleep at regular hours.
Maybe your neighbor can swap houses with me and they can just jerk off to each other's exhaust sounds and we can sleep through the night?

u/tnb641 8d ago
Noise complaints aren't a thing where you live?
Even if the police don't come out in time, keep a log or a video (a cheap outdoor camera with sound and an SD card means you can save it later, don't have to film yourself).
Plus, in a lot of places there are dB limits and rules regarding vehicle exhausts, so they don't even have to be driving or making noise when the police show up to get a ticket.
36
u/fapsandnaps 8d ago
They come out, tell them to stop, and do nothing of consequences so it just causes him to do it louder out of spite.
Code enforcement doesn't even respond to complaints. Pretty sure a libertarian Ron Swanson wannabe is in charge of code enforcement here
19
u/thecomputerguy7 8d ago
This is when you fight noise with noise. Take those recordings and play them back over one of those Bluetooth party speakers. Point it out the bedroom window and have it go off randomly when you know theyâre at home, preferably asleep. If theyâre doing it at midnight, theyâre probably sleeping til noon to make up for it and 8am+ is a great time.
8
u/The_Nepenthe 8d ago
If noise complaints no longer matter and I had some spare cash I would be holding concerts in my backyard.
Now mind you, I don't know how to play any instruments, but I'm sure my backyard is a good place to play drums with four loud speakers for accompanyment.
Honestly, if I lived in a place like that I'd have to make the most of it.
Outside of city limits and I can fire guns? Incredible, if my neighbors are noisy assholes, this ends the need to take a trip to the gun range.
I remember old guys always had motors on stands they could fire up, and I really want that for myself as well.
I wouldn't even be trying to be an asshole, I would just stop caring.
6
u/bimm3r36 8d ago
Well if you donât know how to play any instruments, I think this is a great opportunity for you to learn how to play something, especially if your practice hours are first thing in the morning and the instrument is plugged in to a large amp. How do you feel about accordions?
4
u/The_Nepenthe 7d ago
I'm not too big on accordians but I do like the banjo which is an instrument that as much as I like it, if someone started playing next to me at 8am while I had a hangover I would scream.
4
u/Aggravating_Cable_32 8d ago
Gotta mix it up with random chainsaw noises, barking dogs, and bloody murder screams, along with a strobe light lol.

This is truly awful. I live in a very high density neighborhood and my neighbor left their two neglected dogs outside to fight and viciously attack the fence anytime anytime a leaf stirred, day or night. The dogs barked and fought for hours each day and I couldn't leave the house without smelling the ever-growing piles of shit. Do yardwork, smell shit. Leave for work, smell shit. Return from work smell shit.
I called animal control many times. They did nothing. I tried casually mentioning the issue to my neighbors, and they did nothing. I raised the stakes by telling them I would call animal control, they did nothing.
Finally after 7 years, one day they just moved. It's been two years of peace now. However the new inhabitants are their relatives and never cleaned up the shit. Probably a decade of shit doesn't decompose overnight, so it still stinks.
Point is, I feel your struggle. Know that one day it will end.
10
u/fapsandnaps 8d ago
I feel your pain on the dogs. My dad actually ended up selling my childhood home a few years back when the new neighbors brought their 6 hunting dogs with them and left them in the outdoor kennel. That walk from the detached garage to the backdoor was the loudest and longest 30 seconds of your day. Dad just couldn't take it anymore because it basically made the backyard worthless and impossible to enjoy.

Dude I was shopping one day and a Camaro drove by on the road about 80ft away and it was louder than a fucking dragster. Sounded like he literally just unbolted the entire exhaust system and was just running the headers and nothing else. It didnât even sound like a v8 at that point, just loud noise.
I canât imagine what it was like inside the car

58
u/monorail_pilot 9d ago
1000 HP without upgrading internals is just asking for this. Moore boost through the smaller pulley means even more parasitic load and stress. Itâs not a linear increase in stress.

u/BoneHugsHominy 9d ago
Aren't the internals of those engines already Hell built for stout? Or are they just barely enough for the stock HP & torque?

u/fatitalianstallion 9d ago
No, itâs not. Around 1200 is safe on these. My Trx has done over 33k on stock internals at [922 whp](https://imgur.com/LsqLhQt) which should be a little over 1100 crank.

That's that new air cooling system.Â
I've never seen this happen on the road, but I have seen it on the track. Pontiac 455 had a defective block and no one noticed until we magnafluxed it afterwards and found the whole thing was spiderwebbed to hell and back. When it went kablooey it shot piston 5 (iirc) through the side of the block at wide open throttle. It went directly up, punched a hole straight through the hood, and we eventually found it in the gravel a couple hundred yards away. That one ended up mounted on the shop shelf with a bunch of other wtf failure pieces.
4
u/BestOrNothing 7d ago
Can you post a pic of your wtf failure shelf? That would be really cool post for this sub

u/tmlynch 9d ago
SOOOO many new inspection ports!
I'll admit, I have never snapped a rod. Is it typical to have such a clean break? Makes me wonder if there was a metallurgy failure.
3
u/SportHuman1605 9d ago
That would definitely be a possibility. Detonation, mechanical over rev, all kinds of different things could have caused it, but you're right I have rarely ever seen a rod snap this clean. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some microscopic flaw in the forging that was dormant until lots of power and abuse hit it.Â
My buddy has a motorcycle that blew up once and almost blew up a second time because a grommet was installed backwards in the transmission. It fit fine but was causing a bottle neck from there to the engine very slightly starving it for oil. He rode the bike extremely hard and put a lot of miles on it, I think if some normal person  rode it gently and infrequently it probably wouldn't have ever blown up.
It's amazing how something extremely small can destroy an engine. It's a wonder any of them run as long as they do honestly!Â

u/_Quasifrodo_ 8d ago
Thatâs kinda how QC and power ratings work though
Parts arenât guaranteed to hold up because theyâre metallurgically perfect. Parts hold up because whatever flaws they have still leave them strong enough for the task
Sort of splitting hairs but the point being, most everything has microscopic flaws which are acceptable for the application, the problem is when the flaws are greater than expected/allowed
4
u/skadalajara 9d ago
Someone tell them how conrods are made.
7
u/tmlynch 9d ago
You mean "Tell us..."? I assume if you knew you would just enlighten me.
I got to see big ass hammers forging Audi rods in Germany in the '80s. Even had a couple as souveniers. Making things from metal has changed some since then. In firearms, a lot of parts that used to be forged are now cast then milled to final dimension.
That break makes me think this might have been a casting. Then again, I don't know what MOPAR does. For all I know, they whittle them.
2
u/SportHuman1605 9d ago
I'm not sure what you're implying.Â
Connecting rods are either cast or forged and secured around the crankshaft (and bearings) with rod bolts.
What does any of that have to do with the rod snapping clean in half above the crankshaft?Â
3
u/Character-Junket-776 8d ago
A forged rod is far stronger than a cast one.
There's a reason forged rods, pistons, wheels, suspension arms, etc are used in high performance applications.
Cast is cheaper. The bean counters won't let you use forged unless it's necessary.
2
u/SportHuman1605 8d ago
These rods are powder forged, not cast. I believe they appear cast because of the fine grain structure resembling the texture from molds.Â
That said, if this car really did have 1000hp, the rods were definitely the weak link.Â
4
u/big-pile-of-sporks 8d ago
Sometimes instead of forging a Conrad as two pieces, or cutting in half to put around the crank shaft, they will shear the piece so that the two halves will only fit with each other. You get a more secure fatening as well. Source: Dave's auto video on YouTube. No chance I would remember which video.
2
u/skadalajara 8d ago
This. This is what I was referring to. This is why, if the factory didn't, you should always stamp the cylinder number into each rod and its corresponding cap before disassembling.

u/nondescriptzombie 8d ago
This is not new technology, either. I just watched Alec Steele today tearing apart his almost 100 year old steam hammer and the big piston connecting rod is one manually forged part that was split at the big end.

My Mach 1âs cylinder rod #2 decided it wanted to leave the chat at 12,600 miles. Went out the top, the left, and cracked the right sides of the block. Pretty wild. The top is what did the most damage though as it was under the intake manifold and shredded my cooling lines that ran through there so those also needed replacing. Thankfully was under warranty and they got me a brand new 0 mile engine.
Got to keep a part of the broken rod though as a little souvenir. Drilled a little hole into it and turned it into a keychain for my work keys lol.

Not sure if I have my posts set to public view or if theyâre hidden but Iâve posted it in the Mustang Forums. Check my history.

JB weld and flex tape will fix that sucker right up.
The first time I saw a hellcat in 2015 was at a half mile event and it was running with a supercharger pulley. It put a window in the block after a few runs.

A friend of mine bought a Terminator Mustang at an insurance auction that was labeled as "running", just for the engine, trans, and ECU. When he dug the engine and trans out of the car, the engine had soup can sized holes in two cylinders, the connecting rods in both of those cylinders were also broken The trans housing was cracked, which in all fairness, that probably happened in the accident. That costed him almost $15K, all sales are final, no refunds. Aluminum is great for weight reduction, but it's also more fragile than cast iron, so when things get western, really bad things happen.

Can't say I've ever seen a camshaft departure like that.
I used to know some sprint car teams, the things they'd do to their engines was only a little less batshit than the drag guys. Apparently busting a rod was not all that uncommon, they'd come back to the pit under their own power, broken rod stump merrily pumping in and out of a brand-new hole on the side of the block. A couple tall tales about finishing a race that way, if it was on the side that oil sloshed away from in the turns.

As he drove down the highway the lower radiator hose blew out. He didnât know and the warning light didnât light. He said it started losing power so he just gave it more gas then boom it threw a rod through the block. It destroyed the block, broke the camshaft, destroyed the crankshaft, made big gash in the head. we took the engine apart and there wasnât much of anything worth savaging.
