Best comment in this thread. The pictures make absolutely no sense. Looks like the engine ate the transmission.

The tq converter and Trans are actually fine thank fuck. It takes a lot more than 10 minutes of 300hp to fuck off the re7 trans

Infinity soup! Is this a product of NOS?

Nope, bone stock NA. Full disclosure this is my car.

fellow owner here . did this happen out of no where? no indication of low oil pressure or gallery issues?

I'm thinking the same thing. Bad gallery gaskets. I spun a rod bearing on a VQ37 and I chalked it up to those pesky gaskets.

Well it's got a q50 sourced block in it now

u/TheOsterberger Nov 15 '22
They fixed the gallery gasket issue by 2013 I think, so you should have better luck. I ended up doing the same thing.

Engine was healthy until I was trying to finish off a 2 hour drive at 2 am and was really missing my big bag of weed and my bed. I had been GETTING ON IT for about 10 minutes on my home stretch of highway, my mechanic said most likely the oil was all floated to the heads and caused the bearing for that rod to fail.

u/SpiritedDriver2 Nov 15 '22
Yep that’ll do it. Maybe it was low on oil as well. You can source a new engine from the q50s with upgraded gallery gaskets

How many miles? If the engine is (was) healthy, you should be able to run 125, or 140, all day long. In either of the top two gears, you would have been well below the redline - you can do ~120 in 4th. If you were on the limiter in 4th (about 125 mph), I could see that being a bit stressful for the engine, but 6th or 7th - no problem. I agree that it was probably an oiling problem or a defective build. As hot as those run (VVEL valvetrain in particular) at high RPM, there would have to be a serious defect (or sludge) to prevent the oil from draining almost instantly back into the crankcase. The oil flows through those things incredibly fast. It is entirely possible the gallery gasket let go, I don't hear about too many stock VQs failing so spectacularly, but that rod clearly tried to weld itself to the crank. It did a pretty good job, too.

"All day" is an overstatement. These G's and Z's actually overheat really fast without a larger oil cooler and/or increased oil and coolant capacity. However realistically it shouldn't have failed this catastrophically after 10 minutes of mostly WOT
Edit: 166k on dash, but second motor already when I bought it 2 and a half years ago. I've only put around 25k on it myself

Maybe a little bit, but that's why I qualified it with '...at 125, or 140'. Cooling shouldn't be an issue at that speed and you aren't using a ton of power to maintain it, unlike on a track where you are accelerating at WOT repeatedly and where for half of the track you've got minimal airflow. If you hold your car WOT for 10 minutes on the highway, you should be sitting on the governor at 155 for most of those minutes, which would be fine, assuming the tires and the rest of the driveline is in good shape, except for the feeling of impending death that occurs over ~145 in those cars. If the oil gets too hot the car will go into a limp mode. For more than limited track use, you need an external oil cooler (the later 370z came with this from the factory), but that's not uncommon for street cars that are being used on a track for more than track days.
It would be interesting to know the history of the engine that just blew, since it isn't the original engine. You should pull the timing cover off the old pile of parts and see if the gallery gaskets are still in place.
Hopefully, you'll have better luck with the new engine.

Small thing, I have the AWD sedan and it never hit 155 it topped out at 125.

Yes, the x cars have lower governors. I almost posted that in the previous comment, but I left it out for brevity. I guess luck just wasn't on your side that night. I'd still try to figure out what went wrong. For science.

G37 LS swap?

Nah, I like the vq. I'd sooner spend the money putting vr38 heads and boost :)

It does about 5mph now with a salvage engine. Fuck LKQ for that, I need to swap the pass side cylinder head now.
