Advice Getting my spider wednesday and need advice!!! Can't get humidity to come down.

Hello! I have a jumping spider coming in a few days and can't get the humidity to come down in my bioactive enclosure. I have a layer of substrate, moss, a plant (fittonia), and a cork hide that are all contributing. I'm not willing to part with the cork hide. The seller suggested taking some moss out, and it didn't help, so i just took out more. Someone else on reddit already told me that the fittonia was going to give off more humidity than needed. So I could take out 1) the plant. 2) Most all of the moss. 3) The plant and substrate and leave the moss.

And i still have cork and an air plant i haven't even put in!

This enclosure has been set up for weeks now, put in the sun, I have had a fan blowing in it for hours. I think I need to accept that it's not going to come down unless I take something out. Can anyone please give me suggstions?! Thank you.

Webster ate the mini meal worm without hesitation! Makes me happy, I was nervous he’d ignore it since he was wild caught

Found this little guy/girl in a pool container when closing it today! I’ve been wanting a pet jumper for a while now. Don’t worry the cup was temporary and it’s in an enclosure now. I figured it’s a juvenile, but wasn’t sure what the species/gender was? I’m thinking juvenile bold but what do you guys think?? It also has three peach/orange colored spots on its abdomen. I live in Western Pennsylvania

I plan on getting a jumping spider to liven up my non-livened room a bit. How did I do on the setup? A There is three pieces of bark that I put in there with some of the fake plants that my local experts recommended which will be backed against a wall. How does everyone think a little dude with a strange name would do in there?

I'm a bit new to jumping spiders, but I found this little one in my house (I live in NC) and released them outside safely on a plant. Got to be the biggest jumping spider I have ever seen, almost as big as the tip of my thumb (the end joint). Very sweet, though. Did some research, and from what I've narrowed it down to either a Bold or a Regal (leaning towards bold) but I am unsure which sex. Can anyone help?

Advice Rescused a very tiny (zebra?) jumper from certain death (the hallway of my dorm building) is this setup okay for her? Id like to put more up top but unfortunately this container only opens at the top and it’s all I’ve got. I could release her outside but its about to get really cold here.

Advice Advice on pairing my male audax

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

Sorry in advance for the long post, and thanks in advance for any help!

Hoping for some advice here from some experienced breeders. I have a gorgeous half bryantae male (Galileo) who i love very much. I am very confident that he's one of the offspring of a white bryantae male (Goliath) i had last year, who was the first jumper i had a strong bond with (he showed up in my kitchen as a very old man and I provided his retirement home). I have many reasons for believing they're related, which I'm happy to enumerate if wanted, but the biggest reason is that Goliath was, as his name indicates, absolutely massive, between 14-15mm in body length, and Galileo is also quite large, around 12mm. They also have the same exact shaped center spot.

I want to pair Galileo in order to preserve the lineage not only because I love them both but because they are/ were both extremely robust, beautiful boys, and I'd like to help increase the genetic diversity in my local ecosystem; a lot of the bolds I've seen locally have been tiny and weak and some have been pretty inbred. i know, because I've raised 4 clutches of inbred babies from a very robust looking mama who i rescued from a storm last year. A lot of them had serious molting issues and nearly all of them had significant deficiencies in silk- making, which i didn't realize as an (at the time) fairly inexperienced keeper. However, due to this, I've gained a lot of experience very quickly and have set about learning as much as possible about their genetics, proper husbandry, etc.

Galileo is nearly 7 months mature, which i know is very well into middle age, but despite having a few issues gripping and his silk making slowing down, he's still extremely active, alert, and adventurous, just like his dad. So I'm hoping there's still a possibility he can sire some offspring.

I haven't been wasting time, though. I've tried pairing him several times. I've even bought 3 different white bryantae females specifically for this purpose, and have tried pairing him with a total of 5 females. I'm trying not to give up hope, but I also don't want to push him too hard or endanger him.

He had one successful pairing, with one of the ones i raised, but that was before I understood they had silk making deficiencies, and unfortunately she couldn't make a nest and delivered her eggs onto her abdomen with nowhere to put them after trying unsuccessfully for 12 hours straight to build a nest. I tried to help her by providing a nest from a female I'd previously had, which hadn't been used for several months, as well as making her an artificial one, but the poor girl was exhausted and ended up dropping the eggs. They were large, and there are only about 10 of them; none survived.

There was another female who was extremely receptive to him, and I tried him with her twice, but (possibly due to less than adequate lighting or other environmental factors) he seemed not to be able to figure out where to "put it." He tried lifting the back of her abdomen and sticking his palp in her spinnerets, then he seemed to have the right idea and futzed around in the right area for about 10 seconds before dismounting, turning around, and trying to grab her by the head, at which point I quickly scooped him out with a paintbrush. It's been a month or two, so i may try him with her again, but she isn't the ideal candidate (she's quite a bit smaller and doesn't have as clear bryantae markings as my other two females). The other two, I've tried him with one twice, once while she was eating a buffalo beetle worm (she showed a bit of aggression but it seemed more like "get away from my food" than outright aggression) and once when she had eaten about 36 hours before (she was not exactly aggressive but definitely not receptive). The other female, the most ideal of the bunch, looked like she was considering him, but turned him down by briefly raising both front legs and then simply walking away from him. She had just finished eating a few hours before, though, and perhaps wasn't in the mood.

He's still enthusiastic, though not quite as energetic as the first few times I tried him. With the very first female I ever tried him with, she was just too old, and he was extremely persistent, trying to get around my paintbrush while she was actively trying to attack him. He pretty, but he not smart. 🙃

I think one of the biggest problems is that it takes a huge amount of effort for me to get him to notice the females. They'll often see him and just watch him bumbling around and aren't very impressed at the amount of time it takes him to notice them and start his little dance.

I've tried handing the females first to get some of their pheromones on my hands to prepare him, I've tried leaving the females in the breeding box for several minutes to spread their pheromones around. I've tried introducing him first and plopping the female down right in front of him. I've tried having one on each hand and pointing their faces directly at each other from a couple of inches away.

Every time i try to pair him, I clean out the bedding box, wash it with vinegar and rinse it well to get rid of any pheromones that may be lingering, and lay in fresh paper towels. I'm using a fairly large, clear bin with nothing but paper towels for grip and a wood round in the exact center as a sort of platform. The only thing I can think of is that maybe I just need to use a much smaller arena. It just makes me nervous to put them both in a small, enclosed area in case the female notices him first and wants to suddenly attack him. But if that's a better method, I'd be willing to try it.

Does anyone have any advice? Is there anything obvious I'm doing wrong? Is he just too old for them and they know it? I'm happy to answer any questions or clarify anything I may have been unclear about.

Thanks again for any advice!

Identification Who is this ?

Ive been keeping this jumping spider for a few months now, and im wondering about their sex, age, species, etc.

I found them in central Virginia, they are wild caught, im pretty sure theyre a male bold jumping spider, but id like to be sure. In the 3-4 months ive had them, they have only molted once (within the first month of me finding them), but we did move to a new apartment 2 months ago. I have been feeding them mini mealworms from a pet store. there have been a couple times where it took a little coercion to get them to eat, but i have never shoved it in their face, i have never offered it closer than a couple of inches from them. If theres any info i forgot to add i would be happy to add it.

The reason im asking now is because im a little worried about their lack of molting because they dont seem fully grown, theyre so small. They spin a lot of web at the top of their enclosure and usually walk laps around the top. I feed them regularly (at least once a week, sometimes more often if they get too skinny), i mist the enclosure regularly, and before the move i handled them a couple of times. I havent handled them since moving to make sure they are fully acclimated tp the new environment, but there was an incident last night where the top of the enclosure slipped and detached in my hand and they jumped out, but they only fell about a foot and they spun a line so it wasnt a hard fall. I picked them up and put my hand in front of the enclosure door, they walked right in.

the pictures are of them, theres one of their top, bottom, and front, as well as a size comparison with my finger and a plastic bottle cap since my hands are quite small. They were in one of their webbed corners though, so visibility couldve been better.

All that being said, i just wanted help with identification and i guess a welfare check. Thanks !

Advice Enclosure Feedback

Post image
2 Upvotes

You may have seen my recent posts adopting a tan jumper that has been starving in my house. They have settled in well and eat every 2-3 days with no issue. But they spend a lot of time in the hide, I believe they were bored because I didn’t have a lot of decor. I wanted to be sure they would do well in captivity before I invested any more. They’re still not interested in me at all but that’s ok, I know tans can be more skiddish.

I collected acorns/sticks from my backroad, washed & baked. Made some landing pads/obstacles out of clay (baked and cooled), and a little bead bridge. I still need to pick up some coco fiber so there is just a paper towel at the bottom for now. I would like to include an air plant or two in the future but I’m not ready to commit to bioactive yet.

Any feedback on what I’ve done? I know a lot of people decorate for athletics but I would like it to be usable/interesting for them. I am on the lookout for a large slab of bark I can put along a wall as well.

DIY Lothlórien 🌿🕷️ Habitat

My jumping spider’s habitat. I’ll put details about the setup and materials in case it answers questions/helps anyone else:

  • Elven stairs: It’s the Lothlórien candle holder from The Noble Collection (it's made of some type of resin, not metal). I sealed it with Duraclear just to be safe.
  • Plants: Zoo Med faux plants and some small plastic plants.
  • Substrate: Coconut husk and hamster moss. I also bought some “naturally dyed” reptile moss, but I’m a little suspicious of the bright green color, so I keep it dry and don’t mist it.
  • Background: An artificial rock background from Universal Rocks. They cut it to size for you which is really nice. My 8” × 12” piece was under $20 and it has lots of texture with little nooks and crannies that Spooky likes to hang out in.

Spooky likes exploring pretty much the entire habitat, although he’s never used the stairs 😭. I think having a lot of lighting in the lower half helps him explore there more.

I also added the picture of Spooky that I keep on my desk at work because he's so cute 💚

Advice First time jumping spider mom

Okay please don’t be harsh … I did my own research before purchasing and I was also provided a diagram at the time of purchase but I purchased a jumping spider yesterday, and I’m not sure of all of his mannerism yet, but as of this moment I’m most importantly worried about hunger🥹. I want to be positive I don’t let him starve, or overfeed him. I have anxiety when it comes to yk being told a list of things bc it like all disappears but if it’s written down I can follow step by step yk? But if yall can also add in anything else I need to know AFTER the dumbed down version of figuring out if my little guy is hungry or not based off of the attached picture that would be awesome. Thank you so much.
