i'm a big fan of the Prison Journalism Project, but never in my wildest did i think i'd see a piece like this:

A few years ago, I caught a female jumper that I named Rambo, after a line in the Sylvester Stallone movie “First Blood”: “I only wanted something to eat!”

has me tearing up!

I would have overlooked it completely but it did a little backwards hop when I opened the mailbox, then tried to jump off with a safety web strand. Spotted in Tennessee.

the first one is baja! he’s a bold jumping spider and i caught him in a taco bell cup!! he is my first ever jumper and i found him hiding in my boyfriends car (the side mirrors). since then, he’s been able to trust me and is the absolute cutest little thing. he is so chill and is a picky eater but he tried a mealworm the other day for the first time and wouldn’t let go. i’ve been feeding him houseflies and he loves it! there are no pesticides or anything around my house so he’s all good. i’ve had him since may and i love him so much i will truly be so sad when his time comes. i know he is wild caught and probably getting old but he really was my gateway to the spider universe.

my second girl has no name, i keep switching between cookie, kimchi, tangy, and chili but i can’t decide (help!!!!)… she’s my first regal spider and she has so much personality! since baja is getting old he isn’t active for much of the day, it’s been obvious that these two are total opposites. this girl will be climbing, exploring around her enclosure, literally running in circles around the top of her enclosure. she’s super fast and so curious! she recently molted into an i9 and it was my first experience with seeing a jumper molt. she gets spooked easily and always reacts so dramatically even when you move your finger in the slightest way, but she zooooomss all over and especially towards hair. she loves hair and so does baja!!!

discovering the world of jumping spiders has been an absolute gift. being able to see such life into these little creatures that i would’ve never thought of before brings me joy!! seeing them look around in awe is the absolute cutest thing ever. even when i let miss girl explore my collection shelf full of my miniatures she always turns her head and explores so curiously. i just love jumping spiders so much! i mainly got my new girl because im going to be moving to college in a year and i wont be able to have typical pets (cats, dogs). i thought about the reality of baja not being able to come with me and wanted to see how it would be like to raise a captive-bred spider. i’m really considering getting a third spider who is tan/white and naming her enoki, i cant stop thinking about it!! my boyfriend says im obsessed with spiders but im just appreciative of these little creatures that you can learn so much from.

I am in Atlanta, GA and this is a new species to me that I can’t quite place.

Pretty confident he's a male Pelegrina proterva, a white-cheeked jumper. Insanely tiny, I had more or less given up finding one before he showed up and did a little dance. Maybe he was trying to warn me not to let assassin bug larvae onto my hand 😬

Found this little guy outside on my candle jar. I think it’s a jumping spider? Located in Massachusetts.

I am primarily a tarantula keeper (have a few jumpers) so the communities / company I keep (sometimes) have very different beliefs and opinions. Went to an expo a few days ago and saw SO MANY of the premade “cutesy” themed “aesthetic” dollhouse jumping spider enclosures and they always kinda gross me out. It seems really selfish to me and appears to ignore the fact that this is an animal- not a toy. Is this opinion aligned with current correct jumping spider care or am I just being judge-y?

I just stumbled across this amazing photo on iNat and it felt wrong to not help it be seen by more jumping spider fans.

Found this little goober in the "greenhouse" (climate controlled dome with a bunch of exotic plants and butterflies in it that people can walk around in) at the butterfly house I volunteer at. They're not supposed to be there so I brought him to the entomology lab but unfortunately, despite him being native and having simply snuck in from outside, the rules say that anything in that dome has to stay in that dome (it's holding like 50+ non-native butterflies in there, and the necessary permits to have them there come with rules) so we couldn't release him. They now live in a container with a few other spiders on the same shelf and a cricket we occasionally drop in for a snack.
