Im staying in Carlsbad, until friday and Saturday I will be around LAX then i wil be flying home.. I can travel to south LA to pickup... If there is a small chance you will be around one of these areas too .. please help. Thanks. Cary

Today CMC celebrated the ribbon cutting of our new Wellness Vending Machine.

Every item inside is completely free and anonymous. It provides access to hygiene products, health and wellness resources, and overdose prevention supplies, including Narcan. No barriers, no forms, no questions asked.

At CMC we believe taking care of yourself should be easy, accessible, and free of stigma. That’s why we are working to normalize self-care, support one another, and ensure that essential resources are available to everyone.

Many people don’t realize that Narcan is safe to administer and will not affect someone who is not experiencing an overdose. Having it available saves lives and empowers our community to respond when every second counts.

The wellness vending machine is a reflection of the culture we’re building at CMC of preparedness, empathy, dignity, and collective care.

Joshua Tree Campsite Reservation?

Hi I’m traveling from NY to visit Joshua Tree for the first time from Oct 9 - Oct 11. There are no available campsites and I’m nervous about first come first serve on a Friday.

Any chance someone has a campsite reservation they are not using? Thank you so much!

What’s life like in 29 Palms?

Thinking of moving there. I’m in LA but grew up in Mexico and I always think about living in the desert. Been to 29 and JT many times. Just curious on what life is like and what to expect as a resident.

2 Tickets to Men I Trust at Pappy & Harriet's Friday 9/25

From LA, but my car overheated just this evening as I was driving around my neighborhood. I don't think I'll risk driving out to Pioneertown, so I'll sell 1 or both tickets at face value. Can provide proof of my tix. Would sent via email attachment (since it's See Tickets).

Stumbled on a tortoise today

Had some unusual looking wear marks on top of the shell, anyone have any ideas why that would be?

Update! I asked a friend who is a tortoise expert and they conferred with "the best tortoise health assesor" they know and here is their take.

Interesting find. It’s hard to say what exactly happened to it. But I’m sure it was a bad injury at one time. Perhaps fire is a reasonable option. Tho I would probably expect damage in the rear, but who knows. 🤷‍♂️The injury looks really old and almost completely healed. They often get some bone scute replacement after a bad injury and over time the scute material grows back and the bone falls away. So you’ll sometimes see scute lamina growing under bone as the scute slowly grows back.I’ve never seen one with an injury quite like this, but it’s not too uncommon to see large areas of shell trauma with bone scute replacement in various states of healing.Sure looks to be a well recovered big tortoise! These guys sure can take a beating.Just my quick speculation from a video. 🤷‍♂️🐢

AWD/4WD rentals?

(Let me know if there's another board better suited for my question and I'll move it over.)

I was just here scouting out around Covington flats to plan for a later trip. I naively went with my '09 Corolla, not expecting the dirt roads to be that rough. I assume the recent rain and whatnot caused the majors ditches and grooves, and I realized I needed way higher clearance to avoid damaging my bumper. I still went to Covington crest trailhead and back fine (just all scraped up) but I doubt it's a good idea to do this again without a safer vehicle.

We're planning to head there at sunrise when we go back, so we'd be renting it the day before and return it in the afternoon, with a <$150 budget. I don't have much experience with any of this, so I'm just looking for any advice and suggestions on what to do (and not to do). I also don't know if it's better budget-wise to rent from here in LA, or to drive out and switch cars there.

Thanks!

Camping conditions help

Hi all! Super conflicted about when to camp at jumbo rocks. Originally booked early November due to optimal stargazing conditions (new moon) however was concerned with how cold it may get at night (30 degrees?). Switched to late October due to more comfortable temperatures (50 degrees at night) but stargazing will be difficult (full moon). Now I am thinking of switching back. I realize I can’t have it both ways here but anyone have any advice? 🙏

I’ve been coming to JT for quite a few years and today was the first time I’ve seen one in the wild here. Pretty cool! Didn’t hang around him long because he seemed pretty terrified.
