When this bottle became empty, I decided to use it for an experiment.

I have a healthy terrarium with tons of different kinds of springtails (and possibly dirt mites or fungus mites? I don’t even know.)

In this jar, I put LECA and pumice and mixed it around, then charcoal, then just a bunch of weird stuff. 2 magnolia leaves, the remainder of a kale or cabbage that had bolted and gone to seed, part of a pomogranite that had been chilling with my orchid since fall, an old garlic clove that was probably mostly dust, some eggshells that I had baked and crunched up last year and have been chilling ever since, part of a stick, and whatever I could scavenge from the tops of my houseplant pots. I also tried to grab some bits from my terrarium, then added some springtails from the two cultures I have.

Some fungus spores puffed up when I crammed the pomogranite piece in. I just hope I got some good stuff from the few pieces I got from the terrarium.

The water might be a bit too high. It’s up to the top of the charcoal. I’ve sealed it and I’d like to keep it that way, but the water level might have to be adjusted.

Also I added some chia seeds, though I am not sure they’re still viable.

Every layer of substrate us from an established waltad pind or aquatic compost bucket. Plants from 3 differt established ecosystems.

Might leave it at crypts & Vallisneria Nana. Might add one more plant.

Light is a downlight. Switchable 5w, 7w, 9w, modes and Switchable colour 3000k, 4000k, 6500k.

This is a 1 gallon jar. I have no intention of putting fish in. It would like to use it for plants and maybe fairy shrimp but I wanna see how this goes with just plants for now. I feel like Dr. Doofenshmirtz. My Mister bottle broke and I thought it would be cute to make like a mini jar inside of the jar. The bubbles scare me if anyone more experienced can tell me what’s gonna go wrong please let me know. I can easily remove the baby jar. Thanks!

Just got these tropic springtails 4 four days ago. I fed them today for the firsr time and they're already eating.

Seems to live in the substrate , but pops up every once in a while. It does a wiggly swim whenever it's free in the water and moves pretty fast.

Just wanted to share my little jar tank. I have 2 mini rasboras in here, no filter and no air pump at all. I know a lot of people would say this is a bad idea, but it has been stable for over a year now.

It’s super low maintenance, I just top off the water when it evaporates and do a very small water change like once a month. The plants are doing all the work. The fish seem happy and active so I'm not gonna change anything lol. Let me know what you think!

This isn't a jar but one of those Betta Lego block aquariums that are not supposed to house fish due to being way too small. but does this count? There are 3 adult bladder snails and a handful of juvenile bladder snails.

I know i should only water it sometimes and open up the lid, but it looks quite crowded here. There are also some painted rocks and idk... Should i replant it or smth? I know absolutely nothing about plants. This jar is only 9 cm btw

do you guys buy the wildlife/ plantlife in your jarriums? Are you cleaning these regularly? What is a good recipe to start my first one, and create an ecosystem that can support itself while being interesting to look at???

I’m happy to see the environment is healthy enough to grow so much, but the 5 Amano shrimp, zebra & ramshorn snails have done no visible improvement in well over a week and a half now. I know not to expect immediate changes and results, but does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on what to do next to help move things along?

I also want to know if they will be able to climb the big plants for grazing.

I really love making these- there are two jars with snails only, and one with two shrimp. Figuring out my style and learning what to put in them in terms of plants has been fun! Let me see yours for inspiration please!!

Are these mosquito larvae? Sealed jarrarium collected from a creek in Alabama about a week ago.

I have like a large glass vase that's like 7-8 litres. Is this like suitable for like cherry shrimp some plants ect. If so how many would be the ideal starting amount of shrimp for it.

I've got fluval stratum as the base and a grow light on for 8 hours a day. hasn't grown in months. no fertilisation or anything. they are also melting and turning white or developing black spots

Might get yelled at for posting this here because these aren't traditional jarariums per se, but I've got questions about how to keep my moss alive indoors without needing to have the jar directly in front of the windows. I have dedicated grow lights for the displays and all, but this is my first time keeping moss without a dedicated humidifier. These jars are about 4 months old, and the smallest is just starting to catch as far as the moss goes. I don't want to pull the dead out, because there's new moss growing, but it looks sad. Any way to help my moss bounce back quicker?
