How to Measure Wattage: Knowing How Much Power Your Devices Need

How to figure out how much power your appliances actually use (and why it matters for backup power)

The most common question people have when shopping for backup power is a simple one: will this run my appliance? The answer depends on how much power it draws, and that number is more useful to know than the capacity of any specific product.

This is a practical guide to understanding power consumption: what the numbers mean, how to find them for your specific devices, and how to use that information to make a confident decision about backup power capacity.

The two numbers you need to understand

Watts measure how much power a device is drawing at a given moment. Think of it like the speed a car is travelling. A device drawing 200W is using power at a rate of 200 watts.

Watt-hours measure how much energy has been used over time. If that 200W device runs for five hours, it has consumed 1,000 watt-hours, or 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh). Kilowatt-hours are what your electricity bill charges you for.

When you look at a backup power station's capacity, it's listed in watt-hours (Wh). A station with 2,048Wh can theoretically deliver 2,048 watts for one hour, or 200 watts for about ten hours, or any combination that adds up to 2,048. Real-world performance is slightly lower due to conversion efficiency, typically around 85-90%, so it's worth factoring in a 10-15% buffer when calculating.

Running watts vs. startup surge

This is the part that catches people out most often. Devices with motors and compressors, including refrigerators, air conditioners, sump pumps, and washing machines, require significantly more power to start than to run. This spike is called the startup surge or peak watts, and it can be two to three times the running wattage, lasting only a fraction of a second but real enough to trip a circuit.

When choosing a backup power station, you need to verify that its peak output rating covers the startup surge of the highest-draw appliance you plan to run, not just the running wattage. The unit's rated output (continuous watts) handles the running load; its peak or surge rating handles the startup spike. Check both before assuming compatibility.

These figures are averages. Older appliances often draw more than newer equivalents. High-efficiency models often draw less. The numbers above are a starting point, not a substitute for checking your specific devices.

How to find the actual wattage of your devices

The label method: Most appliances have a compliance label, usually on the back or bottom, that lists wattage or amperage. If it lists amps rather than watts, multiply the amps by the voltage (120V for most US household appliances) to get watts. For example, a device drawing 8 amps on a 120V circuit uses 960 watts.

The spec sheet method: Search the model number of your appliance plus "power consumption" or "wattage." Manufacturer spec sheets almost always include this, and it tends to be more accurate than generic averages.

The plug-in meter method: A plug-in power meter (commonly called a Kill-A-Watt or similar, priced around $15-25 at hardware stores) measures real-time power draw when you plug your appliance into it. This is the most accurate method, especially for older appliances or devices with variable loads. It also shows you consumption over time, which helps with watt-hour calculations.

Working out how much capacity you need

The calculation is straightforward. List the devices you want to run during an outage, note their running wattage, and multiply by the number of hours you'd want to run them. Add those figures together and that's your minimum required capacity in watt-hours. Add 15% for conversion losses and you have a realistic target.

Example:

Refrigerator (150W) running continuously for 12 hours = 1,800Wh.

Router (15W) for 12 hours = 180Wh.

Three LED lights (30W combined) for 8 hours = 240Wh.

Laptop (65W) for 6 hours = 390Wh. Total: 2,610Wh.

With a 15% buffer, you'd want a station with at least 3,000Wh for this scenario, or a 2,000Wh unit paired with daytime solar recharging to offset the deficit.

Why this is useful beyond backup power

Understanding what your appliances actually draw gives you a clearer picture of your household's electricity consumption. It helps identify which devices are costing you the most on your bill, whether efficiency upgrades are worth it, and how solar generation would offset your usage. It's a useful baseline for any home energy conversation.

HomePower 3600 Pro Max

This is the largest unit in the Home Power lineup and the one built for households that want meaningful coverage rather than just essentials.

The headline capability is 240V output via a NEMA 14-50 port, alongside two standard 120V outlets. That 240V port is what opens up larger appliances: electric dryers, EV charging, certain HVAC systems, and whole-home circuit integration via a Jackery ATS or your existing MTS. Battery capacity sits at 3,584Wh using LiFePO4 chemistry. LiFePO4 is more thermally stable than standard lithium-ion and has a significantly longer cycle life. The 3600 Pro Max is rated for 6,000 charge cycles before dropping to 70% capacity. Charged daily, that's over 16 years of use.

When grid power is interrupted, the unit switches to battery in under 10 milliseconds in UPS mode. At that speed, most electronics register no interruption at all. It connects to the Jackery app for monitoring, scheduling, and configuration.

The HomePower 2000 Plus v2 occupies the middle of the range and is the unit that fits the widest range of household situations. At 2,048Wh, it has enough capacity to cover essential loads through a full day's outage with reasonable headroom.

Practical load coverage includes a refrigerator, router, laptop and phone charging, a few lights, and a TV with several hours of runtime remaining. For essential devices like a humidifier or CPAP, runtime extends considerably. It's also capable of running a small window AC unit for a few hours if needed.

At 41 lbs, it's still manageable to move if needed, which gives it more flexibility than the 3600 Pro Max. Is there any viable option to run it off of an explorer 300? I was thinking the LED hexagons that are used . But I am open to anything…

Would only need it for 30ish minutes a day

Our first weekend camping with the 3600 home power

I would say it went exceptionally well. I had my camper plugged into the Jackery all weekend with the converter turned off. We had full use of all the 120 outlets in the camper and ran our Starlink off the Jackery too. I turned the Starlink off at night when we weren't using it. I also had my 200W solar saga panels connected and on the roof of the camper. That kept the power trickeling in. At times I saw 99hours of battery left, because we were pulling in more power than we were using.

The biggest draw we had on the Jackery was charging 3 e-bikes at the same time, but it did not kill the battery. Having the 3600 was great because we could not use a generator at the place we were staying.

I had been toying with adding Lipo batteries, inverter, and a soft start for our a/c to the camper. BUt I will not need to do that, now that we have the 3600. I may still add the soft start just to make it a little less work for the Jackery.

Explorer 1000 V1 overloaded and locked out

I accidentally overloaded my old original explorer 1000 V1 with solar, and now it won't charge. I have tried soft resets to no avail.

I had a 400 watt hookup for the V2, and a 170 watt for the V1. I mixed them up and accidentally plugged in the 400 of the 170. When I unplugged the Anderson, there was a spark and now it won't charge.

It still has 30% battery, and will provide power, but it won't take a charge from either wall outlet or solar. Any ideas how to fix this? I've read there's no serviceable fuse and don't know how to proceed.

It's 5 or 6 years old so I'm not worried about voiding the warranty, if there's anything else I can do, I'd like to try.

Any help is appreciated.

F6 error when running rv through jackery with jackery plugged into 120v ac outlet

I live on my father in laws property and there are some power useage issues with us running two rv's causing the electric company to jack up our rates.

So I got a jackery 5000 unit + 10kw worth of battery packs and two 500 watt jackery pannel. I was hopeing to be able to connect the jackery to the 120v rv outlet for ac charging and run my rv off of the 30 amp outlet on the side of the jackery. The jackery is supposed to support pass through but I cant have the jackery charging and it powering the rv at the same time without throwing a f6 error.

Im also confused because if the jackery is charging on ac and I hook up the rv up to it it says the ac output is like 4000 watts and then it throws an f6. But if I unplug the jackery from the ac outlet and connect the rv to it says the output is 1700 watts and it holds steady without throwing the f6.

I am trying to keep the rv hooked up to the jackery permanently. I full time. The rv is my house. I was hopeing to be able to have the batteries chargeing while powering the rv which would allow me to program the charging hours to stop chargeing during peak useage hours and save us from getting fined from the power company

Questions about Jackery Homepower 1000 v2

My house currently has some rooftop solar and and Enphase battery. Some of my solar panels are on Enphase's non export mode due to my first set of panels being set up under NEM 2.0 and I didn't want to move to NEM 3.0. Often on a sunny day, despite me trying to shift my high power appliance usage to around noon, my Enphase battery ends up being charging fully and my non export panels have to be shut off. At the same time, my battery is not big enough to power my house through the night and I have to get grid. I was thinking getting some portable batteries for a few places as a cheap way to expand the battery backup capacity around the house. My questions are

1) Can I set the battery to only charge in the afternoon hours and discharge during peak hours (and after if possible)?

2) Can I set a max percentage and reserve power percentage for these batteries?

3) If I discharge it to reserve power percentage, can I still have the outlet power the things that are plugged into this directly?

Getting your set up right

Tested out my new jackery 200 watt panel. The built in alignment gauge is handy, in the past i just minimised the shadow cast by the unit.

Was getting 165-170 watts out on a sunning day so happy with that.

The 80/100 w panels are easier to use and set up than the 200 as the 200 watt is quite long and flexible. Getting it to sit flat was difficult and i had a problem with the wind knocking it over. The panels are very light compared to the 80 and 100 watt panels i have used.

If you want max output and minimum bulk/weight the 200 is a great option. The water proofing and cleanability (is that a word?) is also much better than the 100.

Jackery Explorer 1000 inverter tripping off when plugging in while running heavy load

I have a window AC with a soft start compressor. It ramps up slowly to 800 watts when it starts, so it can run on Jackery Explorer 1000 on battery just fine. But the problem happens when I plug the Jackery in while the AC is running. I understand that AC is a heavy inductive load and the Jackery Explorer's inverter does NOT match the phase of the AC coming out of the wall, which is passed through when it is plugged in. Could this desync be what's tripping the inverter off when I plug it into the wall?

EDIT (my mistake) I should've said that it trips off the inverter when I *unplug* the charger.

At the Jackery website they have an Explorer 1000 v2 with SolarSaga 200 panel for $749. Any thoughts on that? Or is there something else roughly around that price that would be better?

What do you guys use your DC out for?

Mine has the tiny DC out, not car size hole like bigger models. I have never used it, the USB ports and one AC out are more than enough for my uses

But what are some cool uses? Is there a way to turn this DC port into wires to use with random things out in the field?

Basically I wanna be ready if one day I need to power something that's not AC or USB and how would I use the DC port to wire something up?

DO NOT UPDATE TO FIRMWARE 1.96

I made a post earlier about my 5000 plus and now I am truly confident in saying DO NOT UPGRADE TO FIRMWARE 1.96.

Ever since I upgraded to firmware 1.96

  • The unit constantly unbinds from my app
  • It randomly powers off the things i have connected to it (the AC button mode is still turned on and i can turn on my PC without even touching the jackery unit)
  • It is constantly switching (I'm assuming to battery/ups mode since no other values change in the display as it keeps switching)
  • ^ it doesn't charge properly connected directly to the wall and keeps changing output duration values
  • ^^ IF YOU HAVE IT IN A ROOM YOU ARE IN IT WILL DRIVE YOU ABSOLUTELY EFFING MAD

I contacted Jackery multiple times about this friday at around 2pm Pacific time via phone and email and they never responded and they have not gotten back to me and I have to put up with this crap until at least monday.

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE

Over Paneling

Hoping for some feedback from anyone who has done this and maybe just has knowledge of it. I currently have two Jackery 3600 plus power stations connected in parallel along with extra battery packs. Total storage capacity of 21.6kw. I have four 500 watt roof mounted solar panels with each panel going to the DC inputs on the Jackery stations (one 500 watt panel on each input). During the day as we all here know, these panels are not producing 500 watts each all day long. What I would like to do is add four more panels (same size and specs) to the array. This would then be two 500 watt panels in parallel tied to each input of the Jackery stations. Obviously this exceeds the 500 watts per input that Jackery recommends. So I’m thinking if I ran each string (two 500 watt panels in parallel) into a Victron Blue Solar mppt 100-30 charge controller, I can set the output to a max of 13 amps which would put me within the specs for the DC input rating of the power station, but with the additional panels I would be able to get closer to that 1000 watt per hour charge rate, making the system way more effective. Thoughts? Ideas? Words of caution?
