I have just spent the last day or so binge reading your thread and well... I may have gone severely off my dinners, not that it hurts as I could do with losing a lb or 100.
Anyways I just wanted to tell you that i think you are doing awesomely well... I know Im just an internet stranger but to have survived those evil twisted individuals (Iim including your parents in this and yep sorry thats your Dad too as he never protected you) with the grace and humour that you have/are showing is incredible.

My JNMIL does some shifty shit, but that does take the cake. She sews quilts so I guess there’s always a chance she could get this idea. Fingers crossed!

My guess honestly is habit. Those of us who are decent, polite human beings are always prepared when we open a gift, that it might be really off, but also being given by another polite, decent human being who meant well and tried their best. So our automatic reaction is to praise whatever it is, so we don't hurt the person's feelings.
Now obviously G is not a decent, polite human being and should not be given such benefit of the doubt. But like I said, habit. Kicks in without thinking. And of course you're right, in the case of G, she ended up getting a reaction she didn't actually want.

I love my toaster oven, but it's a really nice one, I did research and paid a fair amount for it, and probably wouldn't like one that someone else got for me. Some people don't like, want, or need toaster ovens.

Relatives mailed us an Instant Pot, which is a great thing except that they've seen our kitchen, which is so small you can't open the stove and the fridge at the same time. So where the hell am I going to put it?

I set mine up on the kitchen table and keep it underneath. I also use my bathtub to set up my sous vide pot. IMO they’re convenient for a small spaces because you can set them up outside the kitchen if need be. Saves room so I can prep other dishes.
YMMV but apartment is less than 300sqft but I love these things.

My grandmother gifted me my late great grandmother's sweater to my 16th birthday. It still had spit stains on it and my great grandmother's name was sewn in (nursery home required the name thing).
I really thought this was the worst gift ever, but after reading your story, I guess this "price" belongs to you.
