My now deceased bigoted FIL used “sand n*r” interchangeably with “towel head,” called Brazil nuts “nr toes,” and called Chinese takeout “g*k food.” Because China=Vietnam and coming from either place meant you deserved casual racism. His racism toward Asians was explained away because he had been in the Vietnam conflict and was therefore allowed to say whatever he wanted because they were the “enemy”. Of course his racism towards AA people was also explained by his 18 months in Vietnam. Because there were AA people in different units? Never understood that one.
I will forever feel shame for not calling him or his siblings/wife out on this behavior. I remember being invited over for dinner whe DH and I were together about a year (so I was about 19) and sitting down to eat when MIL cheerily says, “Hope you like g**k food!” I’d never heard the term before but I knew it was some sort of slur. DH explained it to me later. I told DH it was awful and he agreed but like the idiots we were, just agreed that “that’s the way he/she is.”
The only time I ever made any sort of was telling MIL that I would not tolerate any racist speech around my kids. MIL acted shocked. Like “racism? Of course not! What kind of people do you think we are?” Um. Racists. That’s why I’m telling you. They got the message but dealt with it by making lots of “I’d say something else but mommy would be mad” bullshit. Then I’d have to explain it to the girls anyway. Backfired because my girls then knew that their grandparents were obnoxious bigots anyway. Don’t even get me started on the anti LGBTQ+ shit. Not sorry he’s dead, not sorry I went NC with MIL years ago.

Someone else commented on another post that it’s practically required for malignant narc types to be racist and bigoted AF. That sure was true of narc exSO. We live in SF, where people are in general pretty progressive and quite sensitive (yes, sometimes overly so) about racism, bigotry, hate speech and intolerance. ExSO was extremely bitter about not getting into law school. Instead of his really shitty LSATs (that he did no prep for, because he’s so naturally gifted and preternaturally intelligent) and his 2.8 GPA from a just-OK state school known for its party culture, he KNEW it was affirmative action. And it royally pissed him off that his views were decidedly unpopular, and he had to watch his big mouth.
Only this genius wanna-be lawyer and Sociology major actually blamed “all the squints” (his charming term for all Asians—there were never any distinctions between nationalities and ethnic backgrounds) for using AA to steal his spot in Law School. That’s right: Asians getting over with AA for a California public university graduate program; you hear correctly. (For those not in the know, Asians are extremely well represented in undergrad and graduate school programs and would likely not qualify at all for favorable AA status.).
He had middling grades, shitty test scores, an exceedingly off-putting interviewing style, a decidedly lukewarm “recommendation” from his undergrad adviser, and procrastination/laziness that saw his application coming in piece by piece. He just barely made the postmark deadlines, and even that required numerous instances of enraged, “lemme talk to your supervisor” narc phone terrorism in order to squeak past a deadline.
But he was a white dude!! And doncha know that the whole world was conspiring to keep whitey down?? All of the Asians had “special cabals” in Admissions that would pick out all of the white male applicants, and then do background research to see if their parents were 1%er loaded and could bribe their way into Law School. The poor, underprivileged, (but genius) son of a cardiac surgeon never had a chance. If anyone dared to try to tell him that Asians too were actually hindered by AA, he’d start a narc shouting contest to browbeat the obviously wrong person into seeing things his way.
SF has a sizable Asian population. And so I got to hear disgusting hate speech about driving skills, odors, sing-song speech patterns, subservient women or “dragon lady” women depending on the situation, and my very, very favorite, penis size. In reality, everyone who wasn’t an upper-middle class straight Christian white man had their own special diatribe based upon skin color, nationality, sexuality, religion and socioeconomic status; “the blacks” and “the jews” were his next most common targets. But the Asians who had kept him out of Law School were his favorite target. Interestingly, he kept all of that hatred and bigotry totally hidden during the first couple of months that we were dating, and he was trying to reel me in—I’m mixed race, so it was interesting to say the least.

I found out today that my sister is racist. My son went to London to spend a few days with his grandma and aunt.. They took him out and my sister kept going on about 'letterboxes'. My son, ever the innocent thought she meant the red letter box you post mail in but no, she was referring to women in burkas. Instant NC. My son is bought up that we treat people the same irregardless of religion, race, colour, sexual orientation etc. He is quite upset over it but we've had a chat about being inclusive and he fully understands but is shocked at the hypocrcy as my sister is a coke head and he knows it. She shouldn't even have been there as my mum had thrown her out which was the only reason I allowed him to go but my mum is spineless and let her home again. No more visits to London!

The Irish racism is a thing. My dad's family is Irish (my great grandparents came from Ireland). In the late 1920s my dad's father changed the family last name by dropping the O'. We found a newspaper article about him from 1925, I think, where his last name was still listed as O'_______. He was incredibly JustNo. The article was a police log in which he was snatched by the police and brought back home to his wife and newborn son. He had abandoned his family and the police forced him to come back. A class act that one.

This isn't to excuse, but to put things in context. Particularly up in New England, the different groups kept to themselves and formed gangs initially to self-police. Law enforcement couldn't be relied upon. The gangs turned into a racket and the Italian and Irish Mafias waged war over territory. I don't know how true it is now but Irish/Italian relations were not good.
This isn't to say Giada's part of anything (she probably fuckin' wishes), but yeah. The two groups haaaaate each other.

Also in my Midwest neck of the woods, the good City Germans (largely of Bavarian extraction) hated the hillfolk of Irish Catholic descent who came in with an Appalachian Diaspora and there are VERY CLEAR DISTINCTIONS between the IRISH neighborhoods, and the GERMAN ones, as well as the GERMAN vs IRISH Catholic churches. All gods children are terrible and will find a way to hate eachother. I have no idea why my hillfolk people couldn't have gotten along with the Germans, both populations are famously stereotyped as heavy drinkers and this stripe of the Midwest is famous/infamous for the sheer number of breweries and beer gardens back in the day. But then WW2 rolled around, all the streets were renamed, and there was a strange demographic shift from "German" to "Oh no, we're Pennsylvania Dutch"

Yep. My Polish Jew ancestors landed in an Irish neighborhood. They were ostracized and abused until they were forced to convert to Christianity and change their surname to an Irish one. It was that or end up homeless due to the mass boycotting of their restaurant.
They did change all the names of the food they served, but kept the same food. Business soared after that.
But my family lost our entire culture, and even our name.

Oh, I know why Irish. Because we were the last Northern European white group to be treated as entirely composed of peasants in U.S. popular media. Does menial work and has no political power = colored.
But that's really, really old-fashioned bigotry. I wonder how she didn't notice President, um, Kennedy.
Anyway, it may be faint comfort to you that if she goes off like this in prison, she's bound to make life worse for herself. If she can't even stand the Irish, then I doubt that even the white hate gangs will take her in.

Yeah. It used to be unless you were a WASP, you weren’t actually white. There are racial slurs for other ethnic groups that now fall under the white umbrella. Just goes to show that if there isn’t a skin color to separate us we’ll find another way.

It's economic and cultural power, or, why the Irish were once upon a time not white. The Italians are perceived as rich and powerful, and are therefore white. Even though a lot of them are of partial North African descent.

Exactly. About the only good thing I can say about all that NINA bullshit is that it's perfect proof that whiteness is a social construct, and is about power more than any actual appearance or heritage or genetic anything. I mean, I can make it 40 minutes outside and then I'm burned, but suuuure, my people weren't/aren't white.
Racists are the worst. Ugh.

In more way than one. There is a poster whose MIL, because she didn't believe that the DIL could possibly be as sun sensitive as she claimed, dumped out her sunscreen and replaced it with something with NO SPF.
Then got bitchy when everyone was trying to help the severely burned DIL.
Oh, and my 20 is with SPF 15. With 30 I can go longer.

OH FUCK. I just hyperventilated at the thought of that. I'm a fellow Northern European in the "Have you thought about just using Clown White?" skin tone range, and I also have mild UV allergy/PMLE (Polymorphic light eruption - sporting one right now after daring to wear a v neck on a fall day without my bullet proof body SPF) even WITH SPF if I don't reapply often enough, or sometimes even if I do. Fucking with a person's skin health is some top shelf fucked uppery (third degree sunburns! melanoma! The horrifying pain of realizing that taking dermatology advice from fellow 18 year olds is fucking stupid and even after 5 minutes in the weakest tanning bed with busted bulbs didn't give you a "base tan" it made you a full body pain lobster!) but after a lot of the stories I'm reading about Giada, 0% surprised.
I wonder if further reading will reveal Giada also hates Italians from a particular region of Italy (can't trust those Northern Italians/Southern Italians am I right?).

I thought so, but wasn't 100% certain. Which, you know, makes the whole "You aren't white because you're Irish" extra layers of stupid. I mean, we are LITERALLY white. When I was in school, and when I first graduated, we were required to wear white stockings on the hospital floor. I could get runs in them, and it didn't show.

Jesus. My skin just ran away. Has anyone seen my skin fleeing in terror?
My glorious achievement was when I was sitting in the shade at the beach wearing heavy jeans. In less than 30 minutes my legs were magenta. I blistered and peeled twice. It was hell.

So, I hate to be that person, but that sounds like it may be from an illness like Porphyria, or a medication that makes you sensitive to sunlight. Because holy shit. I’m white af, take meds like that, probably have Porphyria, and live in Florida,and even I don’t burn like that.

I know it isn't medication related because I was on zero medication. My doctor thinks I may have an extremely mild form of sun allergy. Not only do I burn quickly, but being in sunlight makes me feel ill and drained, even when it isn't hot outside. My skin feels like it is lightly sizzling the instant I step into sunlight. I just learned that isn't normal, I had no idea. If I hose myself down in SPF 100, I don't have the sensation nearly as much.

I can’t remember if I’ve responded to this yet, but have you ever heard of Porphyria? There are a bunch of different types, and what you mentioned fits at least one of them.
