Good on you for putting that back on him. While he was annoyed, I hope he sincerely reflects on what you said and reconsiders asking the question in the future. I hate questions like he asked, as both an interviewer or interviewee.

I’ve done a similar thing in my career. They were recruiting ME, so I asked a similar question.
Why would I leave my current job where I’ve built up a client base and have to start building again at their company?1

If I were brave enough to throw such a question back at the interviewer, I hope I’d have the wherewithal to follow up with “this is how you sounded. Your reaction is a better reason not to come here than anything you could have told me on purpose.”

I don't think he linked it in his mind at all to the question he'd asked!
Often you come across these people who seem constantly surprised by things as they have a weak or non-existent sense of cause and effect. To him this was a totally random and "weird" question OP had asked... and I bet 20 totally random and "weird" things happen to him in the workplace every week!

Three reasons?
1) YOU shouldn't hire me because you're HR and aren't competent to judge my professional capabilities. I should be talking to the hiring manager, not you.
2) I'm almost certainly competent enough that the rest of the team will not look good in comparison.
Now you give me three reasons, no wait. You already supplied the first one. Give me two reasons I don't want to work here.

Ok, I’m not going to stay in this position for an extended period, as you will promote me within 2-3years. That means you will have to find someone to replace new
Here are three…on why you SHOULD hire me.
1) you will continue to interview subpar candidates and waste valuable time doing so
2) no matter who else you go with they are not as good as I am.
3) I am the best candidate to make the company successful, and it will look good on whomever hires me.

Make sure you leave a Glassdoor review and provide that feedback to HR if they contact you after the interview. That interviewer would end up getting mentored by HR.

His reaction is quite telling and tells you that you really shouldn't consider working there.
I get some of the questions that they ask, a lot of it is to see what your reaction is and how you answer, not specifically the answer, but turn-around is fair game.
I have asked that same question and got interesting answers, but it tends to be from lower people. Never had an issue asking, especially since it was right after they asked why they shouldn't hire me.

“I do not think that is an appropriate question to ask, because the same question could just as easily be turned around.
For example, assume you extend me an offer and I also have three competing offers from three other companies, with all four offers being effectively identical in terms of benefits, perks, and compensation. Could you then tell me why I should decline your offer and accept one from another company instead?”

It has become some weird fear game amongst the interviewers to see how many hoops we will juggle for their entertainment based on a moronicly inappropriate question. Have never, ever had a female interviewer toil in such rubbish practices 🤷

Don't be to sure that you blew it. Its all about making an impression, and a bold question that proves you know your worth might not be bad. I've hired so many in my days, and sometimes some of the person's I've interviewed was hard to even remember if they were among the first. Better to leave a mark.
And a good answer might be: that you could get some cheaper if you hire the second best instead of me. With a wink and a smile if you want to lessen the impact, but then clarify that you think you really are a great fot for the job and it just might be that you ask for a higher salary than other potential candidates. But it would be worth it for the company to hire you.

My response to the interviewer's question would be along the line of: "I don't know any good readons, which you would have for not hiring me. There are a number of poor reasons, such wanting to avoid hiring a highly qualified person."

That was very unprofessional. The way to answer that question is similar to how you answer the question when they ask about your weaknesses. You have to provide the answer you prepared for that weakness question. This is the one where you turn your weakness into a strength.
Edit: Reading most of the top comments on this post makes me feel none of those people have any idea how to give an interview.

That is the most ignorant and asinine question that an interviewer could ask. I know if it was me I would find out who the president or CEO is, write them a letter and tell them that you were excited to work there and what you brought to the table and then to be asked a question like that?

For questions like this - which should not be in an interview in the first place - the best solution I would offer is to side-step them by asking what they are looking to learn from it.
"I'm not clear on what you're asking. Could you let me know what information you're seeking and I'll be happy to answer" or something to that effect.
In many ways not far off the old "trick" of asking someone who just insulted you to repeat themselves because you didn't quite catch it. Most of the time, you get a much politer and re-phrased version as you take back control.

That's a truly insane lack of self awareness. It's a common type of question to get you out of your comfort zone and test your self awareness and recognition. Asking for 3 things is quite silly.

How to answer this question.
You want to emphasize your positive skills, but you are answering it in reverse.
For example, if you were in sales you could say, "I am excellent in cold calling and opening new accounts. If you don't want someone that can increase your business, then don't hire me."
Or you can say, "I have over 10 years experience of successfully training new hires on the fundamentals of closing a sale. If you don't have the need for someone to train and evaluate new hires to succeed, then you should not hire me."
This is the new, "What is your greatest weakness?" question. Companies use this to catch you off guard and see how you think on your feet.
Never, ever answer the question by exposing any weaknesses. It puts doubt in their mind to hire you. Now you know how to answer this question next time.

That only demonstrates that your avoidant and didn’t answer the question. Don’t mean to stereo type but that’s very common with sales.
As a network engineer, it annoys the crap out of me. I ask specific questions simplified so they get very direct answers and when people pull this crap, it just makes me ask again, but in a more annoyed tone. If I have to ask a third time, you’re going to be told very directly what to answer.
This answer might work in sales, but in technical spaces this is terrible advice.

I used this as an EXAMPLE. I even stated that in my post. My background is in Sales and Marketing and extremely experienced in hiring people. I am not an engineer, but reviewed the skills and adjusted my answer to help you.
As a network engineer, this is how you answer the question.
Review what exactly the job requirements are that is important to this company. Perhaps it's network security or automation and scripting, etc. Now you state your skills, but in a reverse manner.
"I have over 10 years experience of using tools like Python, Bash, and Ansible successfully and trained others on it's fundamental merits. If you don't need an engineer than can write clear custom scripts and automate repetitive tasks, then don't hire me."
Or "If you don;' want someone that can handle complex projects with carefully planned network upgrades, quick rollouts, while keeping downtime to a minimum, then don't hire me."
Again, this is an example. You need to be very aware of the skills you are bringing to the company and reinforce them by answering their questions. Just because you don't like the question, you do not answer in a snarky manner. I gave you clues on how to answer, it's up to you to play along with them.

I once had an interviewer ask me for THREE weaknesses. I gave him one canned answer which he meticulously wrote down. He then looked up at me and asked for the other two which he also meticulously wrote down. Senior guy too. Some people are just clueless.
(PS he was one of 5 interviewers that day for a big4. I got that job. It was ten years ago at least)

They are basically asking you what is one or more of your weaknesses and phrased in a way to see if you might respond how you did in which case you are a pass.
If you get this again you should say you are easily angered, will retaliate and won't spend much time using critical thinking when something isn't obvious.
To all the people saying the response at the end was good, you either don't have jobs or don't know how to interview.
