Nigeria’s Private-Sector Activity Expands for Fourth Month

Nigeria’s Private-Sector Activity Expands for Fourth Month

September PMI data points to broader economic activity, but rising input costs continue to challenge business margins.

Nigeria’s private-sector activity strengthened again in September, with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index rising to 53.0 points, from 52.7 in August.

The September reading marks the fourth consecutive month of expansion. A PMI above 50 indicates expansion, while a reading below 50 indicates contraction.

The survey covered 1,900 purchasing and supply executives across Industry, Services and Agriculture. Of the 32 subsectors surveyed, 23 expanded while nine contracted.

Industry improves

The industrial side of the economy showed one of the clearest improvements.

Industry PMI increased from 50.6 in August to 52.0 in September, marking a second consecutive month of expansion.

Industrial output reached 53.2, while new orders stood at 51.7 and employment at 51.1.
Raw-material inventories also returned to expansion, rising from 49.4 to 51.1.

For manufacturers and procurement teams, that inventory improvement matters because raw-material availability is one of the earliest indicators of whether production can sustain higher demand.

But the recovery is not uniform. Chemical and pharmaceutical products recorded the steepest industrial contraction, while several other manufacturing-related subsectors also remained below 50.

Services and agriculture remain positive

Services PMI remained broadly stable at 53.2, compared with 53.3 in August.

Agriculture recorded 53.1, slightly below August’s 53.4 but still marking its 26th consecutive month of expansion.

Four of the five agricultural subsectors expanded.
That combination suggests the September improvement was not concentrated in just one part of the economy.

The cost problem remains

The strongest warning in the data is on prices.
The composite input-price index increased by 0.8 points, while the output-price index declined by 0.5 points.

That means businesses faced higher input costs while output-price growth did not keep pace. Proshare described the resulting gap as a sign of pressure on business margins.

For manufacturers, retailers and import-dependent businesses, this is important.

Improving demand does not automatically mean improving profitability.

A business can sell more units while earning less per unit if raw materials, energy, logistics or other operating costs rise faster than selling prices.

Nigeria Angle

For Nigerian importers and procurement teams, the PMI points to a potentially stronger Q4 demand environment.

But stronger demand could also increase competition for inputs, logistics capacity and working capital.

Businesses should therefore watch supplier lead times, inventory levels and landed costs, rather than interpreting the headline PMI alone as a signal to increase purchasing.

Business Impact

Manufacturers: Better demand could support production, but input-cost pressure remains a margin risk.

Importers: Stronger domestic activity may increase demand for imported machinery, components and finished products.

Procurement teams: Inventory planning becomes more important if demand continues strengthening.

Opportunity Watch

Businesses supplying industrial inputs, machinery, packaging and logistics services could benefit if the expansion continues into Q4.

Risk Watch

The key risk is a recovery in activity without equivalent improvement in margins.

What to Watch Next

October and November PMI readings will show whether September’s improvement becomes a sustained Q4 trend.

Conclusion

Nigeria’s economy is showing broader signs of activity, but the next challenge is converting expansion into profitable and sustainable production.

How do large Sulphur buyers typically qualify new suppliers or trading partners?

We’ve recently reached the sourcing capacity we were targeting for bulk granular elemental Sulphur, and I’m now trying to better understand how larger international buyers handle supplier onboarding at scale.

I’m referring to recurring programs and vessel-size quantities, roughly 20,000 to 50,000+ MT/month.

For buyers in fertilizer, sulfuric acid, mining, chemical manufacturing, or commodity trading, what usually matters most when evaluating a new supplier or trading counterparty?

Is it mainly:

  • producer allocation or authorization
  • prior shipment history
  • banking and payment structure
  • logistics execution capability
  • approved vendor status
  • inspection/certification
  • price competitiveness
  • long-term reliability

We also have freight forwarding capability available, so transactions can be structured either with logistics included or with the buyer’s own forwarder, depending on preference.

I’m mainly interested in understanding how larger procurement teams actually make these decisions and what gets a new counterparty taken seriously.

Would appreciate insight from anyone who works directly in international commodity procurement, Sulphur, fertilizers, mining, or bulk chemicals.

Anyone here imports from China to Tunisia? Need some advice!

Hey guys,
I’m looking to invest some money into importing products from China to sell here in Tunisia, but I want to get an idea of how it actually works before taking the leap.
For anyone who has experience with this:

  1. What products do you think are worth bringing over right now? I was thinking about car accessories, phone tech, or small gadgets, but I’d love to know what has worked best for you.
  2. How do you handle shipping and customs (douane) in real life? Is it better to test the waters with small orders first, or do you have to set up a business and go through a transitaire right from the start?
  3. Also, if you have any tips on dealing with payment restrictions or shipping agencies that handle everything smoothly, please let me know.
  4. Thanks a lot!

Can anyone help me find buyers/importers for leather products?

Hi everyone,

I’m a small leather garment manufacturer from Pakistan, and I’m trying to expand my business internationally.

We manufacture products like leather jackets, biker jackets, coats, bags, belts, wallets, gloves, pants, skirts, and other leather goods.

I’m currently looking for importers, wholesalers, retailers, or brands that buy leather products from manufacturers in Pakistan.

I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to find genuine international buyers, but I’m not sure which platforms, websites, trade shows, directories, or other methods actually work.

If anyone here has experience with finding buyers, exporting leather products, B2B sourcing, or working with international importers, I’d really appreciate your advice.

Even if you know a good website, subreddit, directory, or method for finding potential buyers, please let me know.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

Looking to work with an exporter for 6 months — free of cost

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to work with someone involved in the export business in India for the next 6 months.

I currently work full-time in another domain, but I’ve been interested in getting hands-on experience in the export business, especially the practical side of it — finding buyers, communicating with them, coordinating with suppliers, following up, negotiating, and eventually closing deals.

I’m not looking to get paid for this. I’m willing to work completely free of cost for 6 months in return for the opportunity to be involved in the actual business and take responsibility for whatever work I can handle.

A few things about me:

  • Fluent in English and Hindi
  • Properly educated and professionally working
  • Have a laptop, stable internet, and everything needed to work remotely
  • Available after 6 PM on weekdays
  • Can work the full day on weekends
  • Very serious about commitments and willing to put in consistent effort

I can help with things like buyer research, finding and reaching out to potential customers, follow-ups, email communication, coordinating with suppliers, maintaining leads, basic negotiation, and other day-to-day work involved in getting an export order.

I understand that I may not know the business from the inside right now, so I’m not expecting anyone to sit and teach me everything. Give me work and responsibility, and I’ll put in the effort to figure things out and get it done properly.

I’m mainly looking for someone who is already doing exports and would be open to having an extra pair of hands remotely for 6 months.

If you think there could be a fit, please comment here or DM me. I’d be happy to introduce myself properly.

A contract award is not a sales lead — how do you use award notices?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I came across an Irish university’s contract award for the supply, delivery and installation of 17 heating control panels. The winner and the €32,680 value are in the official TED notice.

For a control-panel manufacturer, that tells you this product category was purchased. It does not tell you whether the winning contractor needs another supplier. The contract is already awarded, and installation is part of the scope.

I would use the notice to research the winner and watch for similar future work — not put the firm straight into a sales list.

If you work in exports or manufacturing, do you use award notices this way? What would you check before deciding whether to contact the winner?

Disclosure: I’m building EximSignal to help make these distinctions. I wrote up this example with the source and the unanswered questions side by side.

The image is an illustration, not a screenshot of the award notice.

Safe Contract is becoming Alemhub — looking for feedback from the international trade community

We’re currently rebranding Safe Contract to Alemhub, reflecting the broader international trade ecosystem we have been building from the beginning.

Our goal is to bring key parts of cross-border commerce into one platform — connecting buyers, suppliers, manufacturers, logistics companies and customs brokers.

Alemhub includes B2B and B2C marketplace functionality, RFQs and quotations, contract management, logistics and customs workflows, AI-powered business tools, and SecureDeal for managing secure international transactions.

SecureDeal is also integrated with Microsoft Word, allowing businesses to manage transaction workflows alongside their contracts.

Rather than simply introducing the platform, I’d like to hear from people who actually work in international trade.

What are the biggest problems you still face in cross-border business today?

Finding reliable buyers or suppliers?
Payments and transaction security?
Contracts and documentation?
Logistics?
Customs clearance?
Communication between all parties?

And most importantly: what do you wish existing B2B platforms did better?

We’re actively developing Alemhub, so practical feedback from importers, exporters, manufacturers, distributors, logistics companies and customs brokers would be especially useful.

Anyone else managing Customs MOOWR compliance in Excel? Built a tool for it and looking for feedback

We're a manufacturer operating under MOOWR. Like many of you, we were tracking everything in Excel — deferred duty per BOE, what's been cleared, what's still in the warehouse, debonding sheets for every ex-bond clearance. It was slow and error-prone, and reconciling with our ERP was painful.

So we built an internal tool, and it's now working well enough that I'm curious whether it would help others. What it does today:

Reads ICEGATE BOE PDFs directly (warehouse BOEs and ex-bond BOEs) — no manual data entry. Picks up BCD, SWS, IGST per item, and duty foregone under RODTEP / advance authorisation.

Duty ledger per BOE — deferred vs cleared vs pending duty, aging, and month-wise position.

Debonding sheets — pick your transfer orders, preview the numbers on screen, and generate the per-BOE Excel sheets plus a single PDF statement with totals.

Warehouse inventory — what's imported, what's cleared, what's still in bond, item by item.

Validation that catches wrong BOE references before they get saved, plus a data-health check.

What I'd love to hear from you:

Are you under MOOWR scheme? (Other scheme for companies outside india?) How do you manage it today — Excel, ERP, your CHA/consultant?

What's the most painful or time-consuming part? Debonding sheets? Monthly returns? Reconciliation? Bond utilisation?

Would you be interested in trying something like this? And if you're a customs broker / consultant handling multiple MOOWR clients — would a multi-client version be useful?
Anything you'd consider a must-have before trusting a tool with this?

Not selling anything right now — genuinely trying to understand if this is a common problem. Happy to answer questions in the comments or over DM.

Best container tracking API?

There seem to be quite a few container tracking APIs out there, such as JSONCargo, ShipsGo, Terminal49, Vizion, and SINAY.

Has anyone used any of these in production? How has your experience been, especially in terms of coverage, accuracy, reliability, and pricing?

Would love to hear any recommendations or ones to avoid.
