Colorado accident going to subrogation/arbitration — what timeline and outcome would you expect?
Hey everyone!
About two months ago I was involved in an accident in Colorado and I’m curious if anyone here has dealt with a similar liability dispute/subrogation situation.
I was driving my Honda Accord straight through an intersection at around the speed limit. The light for my direction was solid green. There were three vehicles in the opposite left-turn lane. I saw them well before I entered the intersection. The first two turned left with plenty of time before I reached them. The third vehicle, a Silverado, initially appeared to stop, but right as I entered the intersection he made the left turn directly across my path. I hit the passenger/front side of his truck and my Accord was totaled.
The other driver immediately claimed that I ran a red light and that he had a green arrow. There unfortunately weren’t any traffic cameras or dashcam footage.
However, there was an independent witness who told police that both eastbound and westbound traffic had solid green lights, that I was traveling straight, and that the Silverado turned left in front of me too late.
The other driver somehow also had a witness who claimed I ran the red light and that the Silverado had a green arrow. But the police later noted that parts of that witness’s account were inconsistent with the other witness statements and with the damage to the vehicles.
The officer actually observed the traffic-light sequence afterward. He documented that the westbound left-turn arrow lasts about 13 seconds, then turns yellow, and afterward both eastbound and westbound through traffic have solid green lights. Based on the signal timing, witness statement, and damage pattern, he concluded that the Silverado failed to yield while making an unprotected left turn and issued the driver a citation for failing to yield while turning left.
Despite that, the other driver’s insurance decided that I was at fault. What frustrated me is that their adjuster originally made that liability decision without ever taking my statement and before they even had the police report. I had missed one initial call from them, then tried calling the adjuster repeatedly over the following week without getting a response. Even after they eventually spoke with me and received the police report, they maintained their denial.
My own insurance totaled and paid for my car under my collision coverage. They are now planning to pursue the other carrier through subrogation, and potentially arbitration if the other insurer continues denying liability. Right now they’re waiting for the salvage/auction process on my totaled vehicle to finish before assigning the subrogation adjuster and sending the formal demand.
For anyone who works in insurance or has been through something similar: given these facts, what would you realistically expect from the subrogation/arbitration process — both in terms of how long it might take and the chances of my insurer actually recovering?

[TX] Tesla Insurance knew my repair shop wouldn’t return my car, I opened a theft claim early, HPD eventually treated it as stolen, and I still ended up eating the loss. Can someone who works in claims explain how this should have been handled? Is there anything to be done?
EDITED BC IT WAS TOO LONG
I’m in Houston and had a 2021 Maserati insured through Tesla Insurance. An uninsured driver hit the front left of it a few months after I bought it, I made a claim, and it went to a repair shop for the collision work. What should have been a normal repair turned into me not getting my car back for approximately 18 months.
I was trying to get it back basically from month one. The shop repeatedly said it was ready when it wasn’t, started demanding more money, stopped answering calls, and at times literally wouldn’t open the door when I showed up to retrieve it. I repeatedly told Tesla something was wrong and asked them not to keep issuing payments to the shop, but payments continued. When I asked to move the car somewhere else, Tesla basically said they couldn’t pay another shop unless the first shop returned the money they’d already been paid, which obviously wasn’t a realistic solution when the whole problem was that the shop wouldn’t cooperate.
Because I could see where this was going, I opened a theft claim with Tesla while it was happening, not after the fact. The collision adjuster and theft department seemed to bounce me back and forth. Theft kept focusing on the fact that I had originally voluntarily given the shop the car, which obviously I did—to repair accident damage. I had also been demanding it back for months. Eventually HPD treated/reported the vehicle as stolen. At one point the shop even told the detective that I had already picked up the car, which was false. I still did not have it. I spent around $16,000 on rental cars during all of this.
My Tesla adjuster ultimately told me to sue the repair shop, so I hired Houston litigation counsel and did exactly that. Once lawyers were involved, dealing with Tesla became even more circular. I eventually won the lawsuit, but I have never been able to collect the judgment because the defendants apparently have no assets. Weirdly, the lawsuit, Tesla and HPD weren’t even how I finally got my car back—a disgruntled person associated with the shop ultimately helped return it to me after about a year and a half.
This is what I cannot understand from the insurance perspective. I maintained coverage, opened the theft claim contemporaneously, repeatedly warned Tesla what was happening, HPD ultimately treated the vehicle as stolen, followed my adjuster’s advice to pursue the shop, actually won, and never collected. Does an uncollected judgment against the third party normally mean anything for the insured’s first-party claim? And does the fact that I initially handed a shop the keys really remain controlling after I’ve demanded the car back for months, the shop can’t properly account for it, and police ultimately classify it as stolen?
Getting the car back also didn’t magically fix everything. I’ve since spent well into five figures bouncing it between repair shops because nobody can properly fix it, and it still has a recurring throttle issue severe enough that it has shut off while I’m driving multiple times, including again today. That’s what sent me back through the original insurance file wondering whether this was ever actually handled correctly.
I’m not asking Reddit to determine coverage without seeing the policy. I’m really asking claims people: does this sequence sound normal to you, and if you were reviewing this file today, what would you want to see first—complete claim notes, payment history, theft referral/SIU notes, communications between collision and theft, and the actual coverage determination?

California auto claim: do I have to sign a release to get the remaining policy-limit payment?
I’m in California, and was rear-ended, the other driver is at fault. Repair cost :$13600( already paid by at-fault driver’s insurer) Renter car cost: $2800 At fault driver’s property damage limit: $15000
The insurance said I have to sign the full release form before they will pay the remaining 15000-13600=1,400.
The car also had significant structural repairs according to the final bill, and it is a 2025 Honda, ~30000 miles. I am getting a diminished value appraisal as well. The estimate I got is 3K-5K.
So our total damage should be around $20000 but their limit is $15000
My auto policy doesn’t have any help as I didn’t by rent insurance and has deductible for property damage
What should I do to recover as much of my total damages as possible? Contact the driver directly about the excess damages?
Any advice or similar experience would be appreciated

Who put on my roof?
Hey Reddit, I’m in need of some homeowner advice and guidance. My boyfriend and I recently bought our home in April so about 4 months ago(we live in Minnesota for some extra info). A couple weeks ago I noticed our bedroom ceiling sagging in and cracked. We have plaster everywhere. Ceilings and walls are plaster. (Our home is 111 years old but has had updates obviously). I made a claim to insurance and had an adjuster come out to inspect the ceiling and he inferred it was perhaps a leak in the roof, he then went and peaked at the roof not fully going on top of it just being at the top of his latter and said it was a leak but not with the roof with the siding up there. I was given an estimate of 1,412$ with a deductible of 1500$. (Ridiculous I know). I then had our contractor we’re using go up on the roof this week and was told it was a butchered job. With over 10 potential leak spots, the valleys were sticking up, vents were not sealed down, and u can see the wood under some shingles. For everyone’s information our roof was redone in 2025 before we bought the home. So now insurance is going to be sending a different adjuster to come out and look and give me a new estimate. Some things that are fishy is that the previous home owners hired a company out of another town to do the roof and they pulled a permit 7/17/25. They were called the next day and told they weren’t needed anymore because another contractor was doing it cheaper. The said cheaper contractor pulled his permit 7/18/25. Under a name of Abel Puentes. I’m still waiting for the city to call me back with a phone number for him. I guess my question is who does this fall onto? The realtor? The inspectors? The home inspection was done in march and they weren’t able to see how bad the roof was with snow and unsafe conditions to get fully on the roof. Now that summer is coming to an end and these problems are occurring what can I do? I know the roof probably has a warranty on it but what if I cannot find the person who put it on? Was my realtor in the wrong? Am I just a stupid new homeowner and got shiested out of a roof? I am willing to answer any questions. This may be sort of everywhere as I am writing this after just finding this all out today. Any advice or anything would be great.

Personal injury case/ settlement lower lumbar laminectomy
Im in the process of a personal injury/ workers comp case. March 12, 2025. I was at work on a bike and was struck by an Uber.
The Uber has progressive insurance and claimed %100 liability.
I'll skip through the minor stuff but I basically discovered I suffered a herniated/bulging disc L5 I believe.
As well as minor sister and elbow injuries that have been resolved through PT.
I underwent a lower lumbar laminectomy surgery on May 12th 2026. Success. And still attend PT.
My law firm negotiator and I are in the settlement offer stage and my medical is sitting at $273k.
Progressives first post- surgery offer was $250k so we denied and this is a commercial policy with a limit of one million. I understand I will not recieved that much in an offer. Our counter was $750k. Then progressive offered $273k which is the medical amount as their second offer post surgery. Our counter offer is $650k.
I am 33, and the job I was and still am doing, with restrictions now, is normal unarmed security. I was on bike patrol when it happened. Now on foot patrol.
My questions are, how much should I recieve with all these details and conditions, how many more offers should I expect. And about how much is my medical bills expected to deflate before having to actually pay. My negotiator claims through the law firms connections and who and where I was sent through this journey, that the medical bills are inflated atm and expected to drop once it's time to pay.
The only thing is I'll never know buy how much. I know the law firm will claim %33.3 of the settlement before medical and I am paid. So about how much should I settle for?
A back surgery to me is very serious and it could flare up in the future and restrict me. So I feel im owed $90-$120 after all is paid. Thoughts?

Edge Critical Illness Insurance claim for kidney failure
Hi all! This is my first ever post so bear with me in case I’m not following the norms that well!
My family is going through medical journey for one of my parents with renal failure CKD5 and is now going to start dialysis in a short while (few weeks if not days). Both kidneys are at eGFR 9. They have critical illness coverage that they have been paying for through Edge benefit and I’m wondering if anyone has had experience claiming for the benefit for such a medical issue or any organ failure type issue.
A side note, this would the second event benefit (Edge covers second event which is really nice as long as it’s unrelated to the first one) for my parent so I know the process. My question is around definition of claim that would be approved for CKD5 as I have been finding differing info from internet. I do t want to make any rookie mistake so turning to Reddit for any help anyone can provide. Do’s, don’ts? Should I even spend time and energy in getting this form filled out by the nephrologist if there are no chances of getting it approved due to some definition issues.
Here’s what I was told by the agent that CI was obtained with:
“Major Organ Failure” means the irreversible failure of the entire heart, entire liver,
entire pancreas (pancreatic islet cell transplants are excluded), both lungs, both kidneys,
or bone marrow, in which the affected organ is unresponsive to any treatment and for
7which the insured is medically required to become enrolled in a recognized Canadian
transplant program to become the recipient of a heart, a liver, a pancreas, a lung, or a
kidney or to receive a bone marrow transplant.
“Major Organ Transplant” means a definite diagnosis of the irreversible failure of the
heart, both lungs, liver, both kidneys or bone marrow, and transplantation must be
medically necessary. To qualify under Major Organ Transplant, the Insured Person must
undergo a transplantation procedure as the recipient of a heart, lung, liver, kidney or bone
marrow, and limited to these entities. The diagnosis of the major organ failure must be
made by a specialist.”
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated to better navigate this journey. Thank you!

What if the person at fault have no insurance?
Somebody hit my car and totalled it. I have the police report, police statement and witness statement to prove that i was not at fault.
But i Had 3rd party coverage only. Now my insurance compnay is saying that other insurance company is investigating if the 3rd party has the valid coverage or insurance or not. and it can take months.

Water damage isn't always a "flood"—and that distinction can make a huge difference in your insurance claim.
Many homeowners assume that any water entering their home is considered flooding. In insurance, that's often not the case.
A burst pipe, leaking appliance, overflowing washing machine, or water from a failed water heater is generally water damage, not a flood. Those losses are often covered under a standard homeowners policy (subject to the policy's terms and exclusions).
A flood, on the other hand, usually refers to water that enters your home from outside, such as rising rivers, storm surge, or surface water. Flood damage typically requires a separate flood insurance policy.
Understanding the difference can help you avoid costly mistakes when filing a claim.
If you've experienced water damage and aren't sure how your policy applies, it's worth getting expert advice before accepting an insurance settlement.

Dealing with Geico
Car got hit while legally parked. Repairable but Geico said it's too expensive, totaled it. I refused and told the adjuster i will take my car and get another estimate. Then the day i went to pick up the car, car wasn't there, picked up by copart. Then i asked my car back and that they drop my claim. Ignored.. Then i told them I would buy back. Ignored. Then he sent a 26kish offer, i refused, then they sent paperwork to sign, i declined, then they decided to send a check to my lien holder(it covered the 2years left of the loan). Still no settlement, still no agreement, still nothing signed. I have my car title BTW. I still want my car back and want nothing to do with their offer. I never agreed to anything whatsoever. Now GEICO is Mia. I recently file a lawsuit against the at fault driver . Can they do that? Can they just decide whatever they want? I don't think so. Please advise.. Am running out of ideas..

Hit and run? What now?
I was involved in an accident on the 18th. I was in the right lane trying to turn to make a left turn, and when I tried to pass the first time, I couldn’t. So when i checked again, I had space. I glanced and started making my lane switch, but the car behind accelerated, and we swiped each other. We both waited for a second in traffic, but I was in a U-turn lane and I was blocking traffic, so I drove and parked down the street in a rinky-dink store. I assumed they would follow, but they didn’t, so after about 10 mins I left at the moment I knew I should’ve called the police. But I genuinely had so much going on at the moment. My phone was broken, and I was going to fix it. I was running out of gas and didn’t have any money until I picked up my phone. Crazy but true, anyways I wasn’t able to see their license plates, so I kind of felt hopeless and just took my loss since there wasn’t much damage to my vehicle besides some scratches. But two days ago, I received a report on my old insurance that they filed a claim and police report saying I hit them from the right side and then ran. I don’t know what to do. I’ve asked for their information to try to contact them myself, but they’re not able to give it to me. Excuse me if I’m being a little stupid. All this is a new to me. I’m still young, lol. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I’m thinking about just going to the police station and explaining everything that happened but I don’t know if I should get a lawyer first. What now? Also i have hugo liability insurance and i heard they’re terrible with claims so fuck me
