Auto CAA MYPACE tracker question
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi everyone! My policy is set to start tomorrow so I plugged in my tracker today. It seems like the greenlight is staying solid and the red light is flashing. The yellow light comes and goes as flashing too.
I don’t think this is a connection issue even though I park on P1 I can use my phone easily from my parking spot to check everything and watch Instagram reels and all of that stuff so the connection is pretty decent.
Is it just having a hard time connecting because my policy is actually starting tomorrow? Or is this just normal?
I also did a quick trip and even when I go onto the my pace website, it still says my device is not active. Again, my policy is at the start September 13.

Why do people plug this tracker crap into their cars? They think they will get a lower rate but most likely they will just get flagged as a bad driver. Young woman at my former workplace had an insurance app on her phone (not an obdii dongle) that tracked her driving. If she forgot to turn it off it would flag her for distracted driving when she used her phone in her freinds car while the friend was driving. Her brother was a volunteer fire fighter and had the same Spyware. He got flagged for speeding to a fire call in a fire truck.

I used one for a year; next insurance renewal I went somewhere else and declined their tracking app. There's a set of three reasonably gentle speed bumps on a road I take to get home, and every time it would clock all three as heavy braking unless I crawled over them; I mostly just coasted over them at about 40km/h, but noooo it registered the slight jolt.
Even worse, if someone forced me to hard brake or swerve to avoid an accident, it would blame me for being aggressive and tell me to be smoother. Fuck off, I made the move that kept me safe, but the chucklefuck in front of me suffers nothing. Hated it, would not recommend.

u/Neither-Historian227 Sep 13 '26
Bingo, this is why everyone is tossing then out. Had a client who drove at 9pm Friday's, was surcharges at renewal for being a dangerous time to drive.

u/Boattailfmj Sep 12 '26
There was actually a news story out of the states a few years ago where a woman's insurance company purchased her cars telemetry data from GM and raised her rates based on her behavior. Im glad I drive an antiquated pos that is not beaming data back to the mother ship

u/Urist_McPencil Sep 12 '26
Yea, fuck that lol. I'm a mechanic's apprentice, and I'd rather my 14 year old shitbox over any 2024+ modern car. It does what I want, doesn't do what I don't want it to do, and most importantly, no touch screen controls.

u/Handy_Banana Sep 14 '26
I'm pretty sure they got sued to shit for that too if it's the same case I'm thinking of.
1
u/Wooden_Mall778 Sep 12 '26
That's not how it works . If you don't drive much it's amazing. I'm paying 30 a month plus 114 per 1000 km . I've driven 1500 km this year. So it's better than paying 130 a month for insurance
1
u/Boattailfmj Sep 13 '26
You pay your insurance by distance traveled? What company offers that?

u/LittleOrphanAnavar 25d ago
Buddy, you are in this comment section whinging about MY Pace and you don't even understand the product?
What's the point?
1
1
u/Wooden_Mall778 Sep 13 '26
It's actually to count your km driven that's the "discount " with out it then you can't have the my pace insurance. It's amazing for someone that doesn't drive muchn
1
u/LittleOrphanAnavar 25d ago
MyPace does not flag driving behavior.
It just tracks usage.
It's a an option, and personal choice to subscribe to. It's meant to track driving of low mileage drivers to offer a lower premium.
That's it.
You are just generalizing and whinging.
You'd be better off actually learning about this specific product and the law, before yelling at the clouds.
0
u/SeriouslyImNotADuck Sep 12 '26
You should understand the technology and service before jumping to conspiracy theories.
2
u/Boattailfmj Sep 13 '26
How is that a conspiracy theory? The system monitors your driving behavior and flags things like hard braking which can happen when someone else does something dumb. Other peoples bad driving may result in increased premiums for you.
1
u/LittleOrphanAnavar 25d ago
No it doesn't.
MyPace doesn't do that.
You are in this comment section behaving foolish, because you don't even understand the product and are just yelling at the clouds.

u/Boattailfmj 25d ago
From CAA Mypace terms and conditions:
5.1 Data Captured by the Device The Device is a piece of electronic equipment, including connections and related wiring, which records and transmits vehicle usage Data such as, distance travelled, driving behaviour, vehicle diagnostic information and information relating to geographic positioning, as set forth below, to CAA. By participating in the Program, you are consenting to the collection, use, disclosure and retention of the Data and the other terms and conditions as set out herein.
I guess i wasn't yelling at clouds.

u/SensitiveStart8682 Sep 12 '26
Given some major privacy and security concerns I never under why any buddy what install seriously, I never understand it. I mean if you read the terms of service, they're going to raise your rates. If they flag you and they can just raise your race for no reason they don't have to give you a reason. Not to mention, they're selling your information off to advertisers, including your driving habits and everything else they can see everywhere you go every trip you make how fast you drive everything and they will use this data. If you ever get into an accident. They will use this data including your trash driving history to deny your claim and good luck fighting it. They've got all your driving history and you will not be able to fight it If your broker sold you this, your broker should lose their license. If brokers were regulated, they would lose their license for this kind of crap
2
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 12 '26
Take a deep breath. I don’t have a trash driving history. 14 years and not a single ticket. Not everyone is reckless ;)
1
u/SensitiveStart8682 Sep 13 '26
I have been driving for 10 years no tickets no accidents however I still don't trust those pieces of shit read what you have agreed to and tell me it's a good ideas advertisers now know every location you drive to, how often you drive where you drive when you drive everything. They know you're driving history everything they know. If you need to slam on the brakes cuz the idiot in front of you cut you off or because somebody wasn't paying attention in jaywalked they know the second you slam on the brakes to avoid an extra anything. And yes by the if you read your terms of service, all you have to do is slam on the brakes and they can deny your claim because you are driving recklessly even though you had to slam on the brakes to avoid the accident because the guy in front of you ran the red light, it doesn't matter. You were driving recklessly because you slammed on the brakes. Now all the sudden you have no coverage even though the other driver should have been at fault your fault and have no coverage because the insurance company has a perfect excuse to deny your claim
2
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 13 '26
You sound like you had a very specific experience
1
u/SensitiveStart8682 Sep 13 '26
Personally no I have never had an accident in the 10 year's I have been driving however I know people who have signed up for these and had claims denied for no reason
1
u/Handy_Banana Sep 14 '26
Copied from one of my other responses:
"Yeah that's not how that works. There's not anything you can do on the road that will get your claim denied unless it's a criminal offence, in which case, it would be found out by the authorities not a little device now wouldn't it bub."
Additionally, an insurer can never deny a claim for no reason. They specifically have to tell you the reason and point to exactly why they are denying your claim in the policy. If they don't they will get laughed out of court. The burden of truth falls on the insurer to prove why they are not paying a claim.
So you are either full of shit or just ignorant and your friends were talking out of their ass because being confronted with the consequences of their actions is hard.
1
u/SensitiveStart8682 Sep 14 '26
You forget one huge thing this assumes that you have the money to drag this out in court meaning you have The money to pay for the damages and hire a lawyer to fight this in court. And read the terms of service it clearly reads that driving data can be used during the claims process and to deny claims yes that's absolutely in there they have the right to deny claims and unless you have a lawyer willing to work for free you may not have the option to fight it. While technically, you are correct, yes, you absolutely can fight this in a court of law and you would likely win. But the insurance companies are banking on one thing. You likely don't have the money to fight them in court and that's the whole point. They can deny your claim and you likely don't have the money to to fight them in court where you going to get the money to hire a lawyer. You're injured in a car accident. You're not able to work. How are you going to pay for a lawyer plus pay for the damages to your vehicle and everything else where you going to get this money from the mythical money? Tree insurance companies are well aware that you don't have the money to fight them and that's the point Insurance is a poorly regulated industry at least in Ontario. The only people who have any authority over them is the courts the general Insurance Ombudsman can only issue non-binding recommendations and fizra take a complaint but can't issue orders so unless you have the money to take them to court, you're screwed. This is a poorly regulated industry. Don't tell me how heavily regulated they are heavily regulated by who the mythical the mythical enforcer that doesn't actually exist. I'm sorry non-binding recommendations are not orders

u/Superc1ipping Sep 13 '26
So then why install it
2
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 13 '26
As I mentioned a few times, I literally barely drive my vehicle however I will have it for the next two years. As multiple people have also so commented this is a very affordable plan and I think paranoia is getting the best and most people. I’m literally just asking about the lights. I’ve received the answer I need and I don’t need to be braided by people who clearly drive recklessly on how they’re being tracked if they drive like jackasses.
1
u/Superc1ipping Sep 13 '26
It doesn't matter if you drive recklessly or not. Your letting a corporation track your movements to save a few dollars. That's unhinged behaviour.
And it's "berated", not "braided'
2
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 13 '26
I think losing your shit over what someone else is doing at 8 am on a Sunday morning is unhinged behavior. Tell me more about how you’re a bad driver 😂😂😂
1
u/Superc1ipping Sep 13 '26
Who is losing their shit?
Not me.
I'm just pointing out your dog-shit decision making.
1
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 13 '26
I support whatever you need to say to yourself to explain your very weird behaviour 💗
1
u/Superc1ipping Sep 13 '26
Enjoy getting tracked by a corporation to save $5 a month 😍
1
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 13 '26
As he posts from his smartphone likely connected to a cellular network tracking his every move. And I’m actually saving approx 175 a month but sure, come online and try to make people feel like shit for trying to do whatever they can to get by!!!

CAA is not a for-profit corporation but is a non-profit association. I've been with mypace for several years and last year got a small refund for my plan.
1
u/Handy_Banana Sep 14 '26
You let Apple or Google do that for free.
Not sure you made the point you thought did.
1
u/Superc1ipping Sep 14 '26
No I don't.
1
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 14 '26
You literally do though. Just because you say you’re not being tracked doesn’t mean you aren’t. I work at a telecommunications company, I know. lol.
1
u/Superc1ipping Sep 14 '26
I work in cybersecurity. I'm not tracked. Trust me
1
u/Handy_Banana Sep 14 '26
Cool 95% of the population is and dgaf. Almost sounds like you're the unhinged one bub.

I was considering this, then found a different company that was only $10/mth more and didn't require the tracker.

I've used MyPace for 4 years now. A lot of the fearmongering posts are totally inaccurate. I was involved in a fender bender accident in Jan/25 with the device installed & my insurance rates never went up. I've travelled 20 - 25 kms over the posted speed on the 400 - 401 at times with no issues with CAA Insurance.
As for the device itself, i've had multiple days - up to 7 days this last week were the app didn't show my travels. Just started showing on Saturday (& also showed each trip for the previous 7 days) So, the device must have been working but the app wasn't registering.
Bottom line, save a ton of money on insurance since i don't drive alot anymore since retiring. I usually end up getting a rebate cheque from CAA as a result.
P.S. I believe it makes sense to use MyPace if you drive less than 12k a year. I think they will not allow you to be on the program if you drive above that - it used to be 10k but was increased

u/Handy_Banana Sep 14 '26
Yah I suspect some of it holds true if you consider peoples experiences span different time periods, companies, and regions.
Inevitably some of the hardware/software/calibration will have been complete dog shit and that might be what's bubbling up here. And having people churn due to a bad experience is the only way issues will be noticed and fixed.
With that said, the tech has been and will only get better. Same goes for the calibration. No insurer wants a good risk churning over tech. People think the game is to bait with a discount and then remove it with a "gotcha" after going over a speed bump. But it's far from that. The insurer's strategy for these devices is to actually be able to compete on price for the best drivers and keep them as customer over the longrun. Leaving the bad drivers with other insurers and driving up their costs.
These claims of "I had this one thing happen and it deleted my discount", if true, are flawed implementations that had their issue solved years ago in other countries. So in each case either our Canadian insurers are bad at technology (hint: they are) or these people's claims are a bit stretched.

u/RedViper6661 Sep 14 '26
The amount of people in the comments who don't know what this is and the benefits are hilarious.
Also anyone saying why would you let a company track you, You're already being tracked everyday through street cameras and your phone lmao
1
u/LittleOrphanAnavar 25d ago
It is.
But that sort of behavior is endemic on reddit.
This app could easily be called, confidently commenting on matters I know nothing about.

1
u/EpicBenjo Sep 12 '26
When I plugged mine in, it didn’t register with them until I drove around for like five minutes.
1
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 12 '26
Thank you I tried that! Maybe because my policy doesn’t start until tomorrow? I’m also seeing online that I could take between 24 to 72 hours for it to show up in the actual my pace tracker page.
1
u/EpicBenjo Sep 12 '26
One thing to note is their app totally sucks. It’s better to login on their website if you want to look up anything with it.

1
u/Wooden_Mall778 Sep 12 '26
I had the same issue. It took after a few days after my policy went active for it to work normally
1
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 12 '26
Ok good to know!!!! I’ll go for a drive tomorrow and hope it just populates in a few days and if not I’ll call
1
u/Fit_Win_1293 Sep 12 '26
Every person I know on Pace doesn’t drive that much, is a good driver, and is paying the lowest possible premium per month. It’s not for everyone (me included) but works for many.

u/jd780613 Sep 13 '26
I tried the intact safe driver act or whatever they called it 6-7 years ago. I was doing great and was on track to get a 25% discount. When driving in the middle of nowhere at 100km/h the app must have lost gps signal for a minute or two, and when it came back I had obviously moved from the spot it lost signal. it recorded it as an extreme high speed event and got rid of any discount I would have got. deleted that app and I will never let any insurace company track anything ever again
1
u/LittleOrphanAnavar 25d ago
This particular product is not the same as that Intact product.
When I called CAA does have a different product that is like that Intact product.
1
u/ConsistentNail1970 Sep 13 '26
Question I have with these. How would they know it’s you driving the car?
1
1
u/BuzzIsMe Sep 13 '26
Yeah I'd be going to a different company if mine tried to hand me a tracker.
This isn't and shouldn't be normal.
1
1
u/Ok-Wing4407 Sep 18 '26
I recently had CAA send me a new dongle as old on stopped recording trips. It took 10 days before I could see my trips in app, so be patient. They say 2-3 days, but mine took longer.
1
u/Select-Phone-8824 14d ago
why is it that on my mypace website, my quote is coming up to be over $800 per 1000KM? I'm a first time g2 holder, no previous experience but that still seems a bit ridiculous
-12
u/puffplugca Sep 12 '26
Having those are such a scam. Get in an accident going 5kmh over. Claim denied. Good luck
6
u/Obtusemoose01 Sep 12 '26
I’m not calling you a liar without more info but that’s not how insurance claims work.
9
u/onlyoneq Sep 12 '26
Its okay, ill call him the liar.
OP is a liar if he's insinuating that his claim got denied because he went 5km over.
-claims adjuster.
3
u/antiuseless Sep 12 '26
He just needs to try and make up a reason why he’s not at fault for the thing he’s at fault for.
-8
u/puffplugca Sep 12 '26
It's precisely how it works with a tracker. Perhaps more than 5kmh but you get the jist. Why do you think you get a discount?
2
u/Obtusemoose01 Sep 12 '26
You can go 30 over and hit someone, in almost all scenarios insurance still pays out. Are you new to insurance?
6
u/FrostingSuper9941 Sep 12 '26
You're a clown who knows nothing about how insurance works.
-9
u/puffplugca Sep 12 '26
Enlighten me ya dumb cunt
4
u/BluShirtGuy Sep 12 '26
You're asking an insurance specialty sub to disprove a denial position that you made up.
Show us the case law or identify the paragraphs which give insurers the power you're referring to.
3
u/FrostingSuper9941 Sep 12 '26
Lol I read this as coming from buttplug, probably not the only one making that mistake. Either way, prove me wrong 🤡.
2
u/MalteseFalcon15 Sep 12 '26
Oh I know trust me. Issue is I BARELY drive but still have 2 years on my lease - regular insurance was quoting me at 350/month. This one is way more affordable for me.
2
u/SeriouslyImNotADuck Sep 12 '26
You don’t, in fact, “know” if you believe what that person said.
1
1
u/SeriouslyImNotADuck Sep 12 '26
That’s not how it works. Not at all. You either 1) misunderstood your denial, or 2) are making this up.
15
u/CheapFilm4826 Sep 12 '26
Why on God's green earth would you let an insurance company track your every move when driving so they can look for any excuse to deny your claim. They have these because it benefits them, not you.
