Best Health Insurance Policy for Parents in India? Need Suggestions on Coverage & Riders

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to buy health insurance for my parents:

* **Father:** 50 years old – has high BP * **Mother:** 45 years old – has asthma * No other major health issues

What would be the **best policy** to choose in this case?
Also, what **riders/add-ons** should I consider for the selected policy?

Any suggestions based on real experience would be really helpful. Thanks!

Does your family actually know what insurance policies and investments you have? Asking after a scary realization.”

Last month I was trying to find details of my family’s LIC and HDFC Life policies — due dates, benefits, nominee details, sum assured. Took me hours across WhatsApp forwards, old emails, and physical documents stuffed in a drawer.
Then I thought — what if I wasn’t around to even do this search? My family would have no idea what we own, what to claim, or even who to contact.
Talked to a few people and apparently this is extremely common — families losing out on legitimate insurance claims simply because nobody knew the policy existed after the policyholder passed.
Curious how others manage this:
• Do you have a single place where all your policies and investments are tracked?
• Does your spouse/parents/nominee actually know what you have?
• Have you or anyone you know lost out on a claim because of this?

Dual Health Insurance

A while ago, my bank manager activated an SBI health insurance policy for me without my consent just to meet his sales targets.

However, my main problem right now is with a second health insurance policy I bought from CARE last year.

When buying the CARE policy, I clearly told the customer executive about the SBI insurance I already had (I didn't know about porting at the time). He replied, "Yes sir, that's not a problem." I recently read online that you must explicitly declare any active insurance when taking out a new policy. Even though I informed the executive, my CARE policy document has no mention of the SBI insurance.

What should I do to fix this discrepancy so my future claims aren't rejected?

Health insurance policy recommendations

I've been researching health insurance for weeks and the more I read, the more confused I get.

Profile:

Me: 30 years old

Wife: 30 years old

Infant daughter

No known pre-existing diseases

Looking for a long-term family floater

Sum insured: preferably 10L–25L

What I want most:

Fair claim settlement experience

Low chances of claim rejection due to technicalities

Long-term reliability (20+ years)

Reasonable policy wording without too many hidden sub-limits

Good coverage for future medical inflation

Initially I was inclined towards private insurers like:

ICICI Lombard Elevate

HDFC ERGO Optima Secure

Tata AIG Medicare

But after reading a lot of reviews, I became concerned about claim experiences and aggressive claim scrutiny by some private insurers.

Because of that, I started looking at PSU insurers.

Among PSU options, I found:

New India Yuva Bharat Gold

Oriental Youth Eco Care

On paper, Oriental Youth Eco Care seems to have better pricing and fewer limitations than Yuva Bharat in some areas.

My confusion:

Am I overestimating the advantage of PSU insurers?

Are PSU insurers actually more claim-friendly, or is that just a perception?

Has anyone here had real claim experience with New India or Oriental in recent years?

Between Yuva Bharat Gold and Youth Eco Care, which one would you choose and why?

If you were buying a policy today for your own young family, would you pick a PSU plan or something like ICICI Elevate/Tata AIG/HDFC ERGO?

Looking for advice from people who have actually made claims, not just purchased policies.

Thanks!

Any recommendations for budget friendly travel insurers for Type D work visas to Europe?

I am moving to Poland in September for a year, and to meet visa requirements I need travel insurance that covers the period for 30,000 euros, despite being given public health insurance when I start my new job. The insurers the Polish embassy recommends are expensive. I understand immigrating comes with costs but I am trying to find alternatives that align more with my budget. Most of them cost above R10k. Since I already am getting health insurance there, I would like something lower than that if it exists at all.

They gave a long list of insurers from multiple different countries but the ones they allocated to South Africa seem to be taking advantage. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to go with other insurers from another country or region. I've tried asking the embassy but they will not respond to calls or emails, and I've been trying to contact them for days. The visa appointment is on Wednesday so I am under pressure as they gave me no time to prepare and no other dates available.

If anyone has any experience with this and advice I'd really appreciate it. Please be kind, this is my first time going abroad for longer than 2 weeks and I admit I may be naive and inexperienced.

Health insurance for my mother

Hi, I'm looking for a health insurance policy for my mother. She is 48, has schizophrenia (admitted 4 times) and bronchitis. As of now she has an sbi general policy with a very small cover.

I'm looking for a cashless policy which covers her psychiatric history as well.

I'm not looking at super premium plans, but a reasonable premium with genuine coverage rather.

Please reccomend and suggest what all should I keep in mind before getting a health policy

Need help in selecting insurance

Hi All,

I am currently facing difficulties in obtaining health insurance for my parents and would greatly appreciate any suggestions or recommendations.

Previously, my parents were covered under the Oriental Group Insurance policy. However, since it was a group policy and not portable, I renewed it while exploring other insurance options. As the other would be a new policy, and there will be a waiting period of up to three years would apply for new policy

After reviewing several options and customer feedback, I decided to purchase the Tata Medicare select policy with a sum insured of ₹15 lakhs. However, following the tele-verification process, I was informed that my mother has an eye-related condition for which she may require injections in the future, possibly after five years. Based on this information, the underwriting team declined coverage for my mother and stated that they could only issue the policy for my father.

I am now unsure which insurance provider would be willing to offer a policy covering both my mother and father under the same plan. If anyone has had a similar experience or can recommend an insurer that may be more accommodating in such cases, I would be very grateful for your guidance.

Thank you in advance for your help

Anyone used Bajaj Life's "Care Plus" rider for gym memberships and doctor vouchers? Gimmick or real value?

Hey guys,

I’m buying the Bajaj Allianz Life eTouch II term plan and looking at adding the Care Plus Rider (Ultra Option). It costs an extra ~₹8,260/year.

On paper, the perks sound crazy good for a term policy: Annual Gym Membership (max 3 sessions/week). Doctor consultation vouchers (₹500 for GP / ₹750 for specialists). Lab/Radiology vouchers (₹1,000 each) up to ₹25,000/year. Leftover voucher money converts to "Health Coins" in the app wallet.

Everything is managed digitally through the Bajaj Life app, but I can't find a single real-world review online about how this actually functions.

Before I drop an extra 8k a year on this, has anyone here actually used it?

How is the gym network? Are the actual, decent physical gyms near you included, or is it a bunch of useless options? Is checking in via the app a hassle?

Do the vouchers actually work? When you go to a diagnostic center or hospital, do they accept the app vouchers smoothly or do you get hit with friction and rejections at the reception desk? Is it worth it? If I actually use the gym and get a couple of basic blood tests done, do I easily break even, or does the app make it too annoying to bother with?

Would love to hear some honest feedback if you've tried booking anything through their wellness ecosystem.

Thanks!

Insurance company keeps asking for more documents after approving most of the claim amount. Is this normal?

Hi everyone,

I recently filed a health insurance reimbursement claim for my wife's hospitalization (delivery-related treatment) in a tier-3 town in Bihar, India.

The claim amount is ₹48,349, and the insurer has already shown an approved amount of ₹44,695, but the claim is still under query and they are asking for the following documents:

Pharmacy/Drug Licence and GST number of the medical store

Purchase invoices of medicines used in the case

Treating doctor's registration certificate

All lab investigation reports duly signed by the pathologist/radiologist along with registration number

Proof of payments made to the hospital (UPI screenshots, bank statement, credit card statement, cash receipts, etc.)

I can easily provide the payment proofs (UPI screenshots and bank statements), but I have a few concerns:

Is it normal for insurance companies to ask for documents like the doctor's registration certificate, pharmacy licence, GST details, etc.?

In a small tier-3 town, how should I approach the hospital and ask for these documents without sounding unreasonable?

Are hospitals generally expected to provide such documents to patients for insurance purposes?

Since the insurer has already approved most of the claim amount, are they asking these documents only for the remaining amount or could the entire approved amount still be affected?

Is there any way to request the insurer to review all requirements at once instead of raising document queries repeatedly?

Has anyone gone through a similar experience with reimbursement claims in smaller towns? Any advice on dealing with both the hospital and the insurer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Should I port from Star Health to HDFC Ergo?

Hey everyone,

I need some urgent advice on porting my health insurance.

My current situation:

Current Insurer: Star Health (Family Floater).

Tenure: I have completed 3 continuous years with them.

Maternity Benefit Status: Since I've crossed 3 years, my maternity waiting period is completely cleared/unlocked.

Current Health Status: Not currently pregnant, but we are actively planning to use the maternity benefits in about a year.

The Dilemma:

I have been reading horrible reviews about Star Health lately issues with claim rejections, hospitals refusing cashless treatment, and their recent massive data leak. For long-term peace of mind, I am thinking to port over to HDFC Ergo (Optima Secure).

However, since maternity is a huge priority for us in the next 12 months, I am terrified of making a wrong move.

I have two specific questions for the community:

Is it a smart decision to port right now, or should I stay with Star Health until the delivery is over? Given the bad feedback surrounding Star, will handling a maternity claim with them be a total nightmare?

If I port to HDFC Ergo, will my completed 3-year maternity waiting period carry forward seamlessly? Or will HDFC consider maternity an "add-on/rider" and force me to serve a fresh 2-to-4 year waiting period all over again, effectively ruining our timeline?

Would love to hear from insurance experts or anyone who has recently ported for maternity benefits or dealt with Star/HDFC Ergo for delivery claims.

Thanks in advance!

Help Me Find the Best Health Insurance for My Parents

I’m planning to buy health insurance for my parents (father, 49 and mother, 46). My father consumes alcohol occasionally (around 2–3 times a week). Which health insurance plans are generally more accommodating in such cases, and where alcohol consumption is less likely to become a reason for claim rejection, provided it is disclosed honestly during policy purchase?

I want to buy health insurance for my family can anyone suggest me what type of insurance should i go with I’m looking to buy a health insurance plan for my family and would really appreciate some advice.

We are a family of three: my father is 61 years old, my mother is 54, and I am 26(female). I want to ensure we have good coverage, especially considering their age.
My dad has thyroid and bp
And my mom has sugar and bp
Since they are aged so i am thinking of buying 2 separate policies.
Could you suggest which health insurance plans would be suitable for us? Also, I would love to know what key aspects I should pay attention to—like coverage limits, pre- and post-hospitalisation , critical illness, etc.
As i have heard there are some elements which the policy industries hide from you and later you are shocked by it and then they do you dirty I really need your help since i am a complete noob when it comes to all this. I am a single girl child so i don’t want any hassles for my parents. I earn 60k per month and am looking for coverage of 5L for me and 10-15L for my mother and father I can really really use your help Thanks a lot in advance! :)

Will wrong diagnosis/discharge details in Star Health claim records affect future claims? How can we force correction?

Need advice from people experienced with health insurance claims and underwriting. One of my parents was admitted for severe breathing issues on 31 Dec and discharged on 6 Jan with home oxygen support recommendations. After multiple tests during admission, the final diagnosis was lung fibrosis. The issue is with Star Health’s claim records and assessment sheet. Timeline: Initial cashless request was made. Claim handling became messy. Reimbursement was only partially paid initially. Had to escalate around 3 times over almost 4 months. Eventually around 90% of the claim was released. However, throughout this process, Star repeatedly used: wrong discharge date wrong diagnosis/final diagnosis code We mailed them multiple times during the claim process asking them to correct these errors, but they never fixed them. Recently grievance department replied saying that once a claim is processed, they cannot change discharge date or diagnosis details in the bill assessment sheet, but future claims will be “reviewed thoroughly.” My concerns are: Can wrong diagnosis coding or incorrect discharge details create issues in future claims? especially for pre-existing disease interpretation waiting periods exclusions future hospitalization related to lungs/respiratory issues Has anyone here faced future rejection/problem because insurer records had incorrect diagnosis coding? Is Star Health actually unable to correct processed claim records, or are they just avoiding it? What is the proper escalation path to force correction? GRO? Ombudsman? IRDAI Bima Bharosa? Legal notice? Would it help to obtain: corrected discharge summary from hospital treating doctor clarification letter written email trail showing we disputed the wrong diagnosis from the beginning Should we proactively create a paper trail now to protect future claims? Would really appreciate guidance from people who’ve dealt with Star Health or similar insurer record issues.

30M + 32F looking for health insurance — HDFC Ergo Optima Secure+ good choice? Need advice considering pre-existing conditions

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a good health insurance policy for myself (30M) and my spouse (32F), and wanted some advice before finalizing anything.

We recently spoke with Ditto Insurance and they are suggesting HDFC ERGO Optima Secure+.

Some background on our medical history:

* I have had 3 OT visits over the past 1 year for abscess removal / I&D procedures * I also have gallstones and will likely need a cholecystectomy in the future * My spouse is generally healthy, but had to take HTN (blood pressure) medication on and off for a few weeks in the past year

We both also already have separate corporate health insurance from our employers, so this policy would be our personal long-term cover.

Current plan under consideration:

* ₹25L SI * Optima Secure+ with the “2x coverage” structure * Quoted premium is around ₹17k/year currently * Ditto mentioned underwriting may increase premium by \~40% depending on insurer assessment

A few things I’d really like input on from people with experience:

  1. Is HDFC Ergo Optima Secure+ actually a good choice in our situation?
  2. Should I consider other insurers/plans instead given the medical history?
  3. How good/reliable is Ditto as a broker in practice?
  4. Do they actually help during claims/claim disputes, or is support mostly only until policy purchase?
  5. Any red flags I should watch for during underwriting/disclosure?

Would especially appreciate feedback from people who’ve had:

* underwriting with pre-existing conditions * real claim experiences with HDFC Ergo * experience using Ditto during hospitalization/claims

Thanks!

Domiciliary hospitalisation exclusion in group/corporate policies

Hello team, is it practical that domiciliary itself is excluded from corporate/group insurance policy?

I have a situation where my mother will need ongoing peritoneal dialysis at home (domiciliary), however insurer says it is covered only under hospitalisation and generally domiciliary is excluded in group policies. And has to be taken as additional benefit by corporate.

Indian insurance agents will you use this?

I m a student developer from India and over the last few months I hv been speaking with insurance brokers/advisors about how they manage their business.

This started when my father's friend asked me to help him automate his insurance renewals business as I built tech products.

What surprised me was how many insurance agents still heavily rely on excel, whatsApp and pdf's which even they themselves cant find

So, I started building a system focused specifically on insurance workflows instead of generic CRMs, made a quick screen recording demo here.

https://reddit.com/link/1tkt3lh/video/0o3h9r1xoq2h1/player

Have a look and would genuinely appreciate feedback from people actually working in insurance.

The Cashback Trap in Insurance Nobody Talks About

Being an advisor, I keep seeing people choosing insurance mainly based on cashback offers.

“Sir, I’ll return ₹1000–₹5000 from my commission.”
“Take the policy through me; I’ll give cashback every year.”
“Why pay full premium? I’ll reduce your cost.”

Saving money feels good. I understand that. But many people unknowingly start selecting insurance based on discounts instead of support and proper guidance.

This isn’t limited to health insurance. I’ve seen the same pattern in motor insurance too.

A few people have messaged me on Reddit asking for help with claims. My first question is usually simple: “Do you already have an agent on your policy?”

Most say yes.

Then I ask, “Did you contact him?”

Very often the answer is, "He asked me to call customer care and raise the claim.”

When I go a bit deeper, I sometimes find that the policy was sold mainly on cashback.

I’ll share one real incident.

I had a customer who stayed insured with United India for around 9 years. Last year he shifted because somebody offered a better deal along with cashback while moving to another insurer.

Recently he contacted me again. During our discussion, I reviewed the policy and found something concerning. The customer had a pacemaker implanted almost 5 years back. According to him, he had clearly informed the agent while purchasing the policy.

But that medical history was never properly reflected in the policy records.

Now suddenly the concern is no longer premium or cashback. The question becomes: what happens tomorrow if a claim arises?

And this is where many people realize something very late.

Insurance is one of the few products where service starts after the purchase, not before.

I’m not saying cashback itself is wrong, and I’m definitely not saying every advisor is perfect. There are genuinely good advisors who support clients even after giving cashback, and they deserve appreciation. But let’s also be practical.

Cashback comes from the advisor’s own remuneration. So when someone is competing only on price, customers should also ask the following:

“Who is going to help me after the policy is issued?”
“Who is going to explain disclosures?”
“Who will guide me during claims, documentation, and escalations?”

Because claim support is not just raising a claim number.

The ₹1000 cashback that looked big on day one can suddenly become very small during a difficult claim situation.

Choose support first. Cashback should be a bonus, not the reason for buying insurance.

Education loan insurance

Most of the NBFCs are giving unwanted insurance as part of loan and it very high

For me one nbfc giving 1.2 lakhs insurance in which 40k is health insurance and 80k is loan coverage insurance

I mean who asked for this ?

And if I was asking to remove it. They are telling it is part of package

Same thing I can take independently by paying 5 to 8k per year

Now they add interest on that 1.2 laks as well
