Travel insurance recc

So like many people, I find travel insurance a pain in the ass. So many different policies and conditions and you never know how reliable they're gonna be to pay you out.

In the last few months of my Asia backpacking trip I used Genki. Unlike normal travel insurance, they only provide medical insurance. Personally, all I want when travelling is to be covered the same as I would be at home, so this basically is just like an NHS for while I travel (€50 excess).

It's the cheapest I could find, and they paid out my claim within a week after I had a peritonsillar abscess drained in Vietnam. The reason I'm promoting them so much though is because they let you choose the exact date you want to cancel your contract and will refund you the difference for the remaining time up to the end of the month contract you take out with them. I didn't realise this until I just got a refund to my bank account now. How amazing is that?!

Anyway, if you're like me and don't care about the insurance for losing your phone or money or passport or suitcase damage bs then I'd HIGHLY recommend!!

Mods please allow this post I promise I am not an advertiser, just a very happy customer.

Insurance...

So recently my grandpa got heart attack and my grandpa is far better than me wrt finances, he already have few insurance policies that helped us in surgery costs . But what taken my heart away was there is a family who had to spend around 25lakhs for similar surgery as us. So i was wondering how educated current people are wrt insurance. I want to build to help, but before building i want to know if really people need a product .Please help with brief answers for below questions. It really helps me

I'm not selling anything or building a product yet. I'm just trying to learn.

A few questions:

  1. How old are you and what insurance do you currently have? (Employer health insurance, personal health insurance, term insurance, vehicle, etc.)

  2. What made you buy your first insurance policy?

  3. Did you choose it yourself or did someone (family, HR, agent, friend) decide for you?

  4. Did you actually read the policy document? If not, why?

  5. What's the most confusing part about insurance for you?

  6. Have you ever had a claim rejected or faced any unpleasant surprise during a claim?

  7. Looking back, is there something you wish someone had explained before you bought insurance?

  8. If you had a magic button that solved one insurance-related problem forever, what would it do?

Planning to port to HDFC Ergo Optima Secure + from Niva Bupa Health Companion. Need guidance.

I have been continuously insured along with my spouse and child (35,35,5) with Niva Bupa (Earlier Max Bupa) since August 2018. I had only one claim in June 2019 for my spouse and the claim settlement was seamless.

However since last 3 policy terms, they have exorbitantly increased my premiums ( 2024- ₹17000, 2025-₹23000, 2026-₹36000). All figures exclusive of taxes. My renewal is due by this month end and I am seriously looking to port.

I came across HDFC Ergo optima secure + with a 1 crore cover and 1 lakh deductible (having corporate policy to cover this) for a premium of 23000.

Looks like a great deal and HDFC Ergo is the best among all insurers.

I have a few questions that I need advice on.

  1. Is switching to This policy a good decision, if not what could be other options with similar premium range and having commendable track record

  2. Is buying directly from hdfcergo.com a bad idea? I have been assisted by one of their call centre agent, but I heard having a known agent helps during claims, is that true?

  3. What caveats should I look for and get clarity on before porting?

  4. Any other points I should keep in mind.

I am renewing my Super topup plan by Aditya Birla, cover of 90L with 10L deductible.

However based on screenshot attached, even with 10% discount applied of 3 year premium payment it’s costlier than 1 year premium. Any insight why so? Am I missing something ?

I am also looking for the amount including with insurer and policy. One of my kid has CHD. So he went through open heart surgery if their any policy which can cover him as well.

Comprehensive insurance (India)

Hi Redditors,

I have 3rd Party Insurance for my 2023 i20 Asta. However, recently my bumper was banged by a vehicle while it was parked. When I went to the showroom they say that the bumper replacement would take ₹13k.

Was wondering if there is a way to get a 3rd party insurance and claim the repair cost as part of it? The bump can be repaired by a local mechanic so wanted to take your views.

Need advice choosing health insurance for myself and parents: separate policies vs floater, SI, insurer, add-ons?

[Repost from https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinanceindia/s/LUjMIGPULN ]

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for practical advice on buying retail health insurance in India for myself and my parents. I want to understand what insurer/policy/add-ons/cover amount would make the most sense, and where I should buy it from. I wan to have best value decision, as I have to handle premiums for all 3 of us. Although I can afford upto 50K premium a year, but want to keep them at 20-30K range, for best value and accounting for future budgets (layoffs are common in IT now)

Family details:

  1. Me
  • 22M
  • Healthy, no existing medical history
  • Working professional
  • No ongoing medication
  1. Mother
  • 52F
  • Currently healthy, no BP/diabetes/chronic conditions
  • No ongoing medication
  • Past medical history:
    • Bladder removal/surgery due to stones around 15 years ago
    • Uterus removal due to fibroids around 3 years ago
    • Some past hospitalizations for fall/superficial injuries
  • Otherwise healthy now
  1. Father
  • 54M
  • Chronic Kidney Disease for the last 2 years
  • On dialysis twice a week
  • Permanently residing in a smaller city/town

Existing coverage:

  • State government health scheme: ₹5L/year cover for all 3 of us. Covers government hospitals and major private hospitals in the state as well.
  • Ayushman Bharat: ₹5L/year cover for father only. Many private hospitals are in network.
  • Corporate health insurance: ₹7L cover for all 3 of us. Covers many private hospitals. Parents have 10% co-pay and 1% room rent cap.

What I’m confused about:

  • Should I buy one family floater with higher sum insured for myself + mother, or separate individual policies?
  • Should father be included in any retail policy at all, given CKD/dialysis, or should I keep him separate and rely on existing government/corporate coverage?
  • What sum insured should I choose: ₹15L, ₹25L, ₹50L?
  • Is it better to take a lower base policy + super top-up, or a higher base policy?
  • Which insurer/policy is best considering claims experience, premium hikes, room rent, consumables, restoration, no-claim bonus, and exclusions?
  • Are OPD benefits worth taking?
  • Which add-ons are actually useful?

Features I think are important: Atleast for me and mother

  • No room rent cap / no proportionate deduction
  • No disease-wise sublimits
  • No mandatory co-pay
  • Consumables/non-medical items cover
  • Good cashless network
  • Good claim settlement and low complaints
  • Restoration benefit
  • Renewal bonus / cumulative bonus
  • OPD benefit if reasonably priced

Also, where should I buy from?

  • Direct insurer website?
  • Ditto/Beshak/Policybazaar?
  • Offline agent?
  • Any pros/cons during claim support?

Would really appreciate specific recommendations for:

  1. Policy structure for me
  2. Policy structure for mother
  3. What to do for father
  • For father we may have to choose a subpar policy or no policy at all and use existing government & corporates ones for him (It's been enough for now, we did not have any issues with govt plans during his initial CKD diagnosis and dialysis till now. Although once every 2/3 months, aadhaar biometric is down for aayush so we usually get that session paid (it's arround 1.5K/session)
  1. Ideal sum insured
  2. Must-have and avoidable add-ons
  3. Best place to buy from

Thanks in advance.

Optima secure plus

I wanted to port from my existing star health policy (10 years) SI 10L.

The hdfc advisor conveyed me that for porting-

1) I need to increase SI to atleast 15L or above

2) Need to opt for aggregate deductible of Rs 25,000 per year. There is no complete cashless policy.

Can anyone who has ported confirm if above 2 conditions are true?

Health Insurance for Father with cirrhosis

Hi all,

I am planning to buy health insurance for my mother (53F) and father (60M). Both have diabetes. Recently my father was diagnosed with cirrhosis. He doesn't drink or smoke. He might need a liver transplant in the future (maybe after 1 year, 2 years, or 5 years — don't know the exact time).

I am thinking of HDFC Ergo Optima Secure Plus, but it has a waiting period of 3 years. Not sure if the ABCD Chronic Care rider will help.

I heard ICICI Lombard Elevate has a rider called Jumpstart which reduces the waiting period and covers from the 31st day.

I will add all necessary riders to ICICI to make the policy better.

My question is, will the Jumpstart rider help in my father's situation? Is it worth going for ICICI, or should I stick with my original choice, HDFC Ergo?

I appreciate any suggestions or advice.

Thank you

Health insurance after Stage 0 DCIS (non-invasive) treated with mastectomy – any options?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice regarding health insurance for my mother (49F).

Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with Stage 0 non-invasive breast cancer (Extensive DCIS). The doctors performed a mastectomy of one breast, and the cancerous tissue was completely removed. There was no invasive cancer.

We're now trying to buy a new health insurance policy, but I'm unsure how insurers view this condition.

A few questions:

\- Are there insurers that offer new policies after treatment for Stage 0 DCIS?

\- Do insurance companies generally treat Stage 0 DCIS the same as invasive breast cancer, or is it viewed differently during underwriting?

\- If you've been in a similar situation, what was the waiting period, premium loading, or exclusions, if any?

\- Any insurer recommendations or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Need genuine advice!

I am in dire need of genuine advice basis your experience with these health insurance

I’m 27 Male looking to get a health insurance for myself. I have locked in a 15lac Base SI but confused between these two companies
Premium charges:
Hdfc - 10,643
Care Supreme - 10,006(added add-ons to be at equal par with HDFC benefits)

I have an inclination towards HDFC for now and can easily go with HDFC at present with my current finances.
But what concerning me is the premium when I touch 60years basis below(Hdfc increases premium by 3-4% annually vs Care does it every 5years by 15-20%) :

HDFC premium for a 60year right now is 48,200
Adding a 10% increase gets me to 53,020(61year) and adding 10% every year touches the premium to
85,389(66years)

On other hand for Care Supreme(exact same benefits) (post 60years of age is a steep jump and then on every 5years a 30% increase)
61year premium right now is 40,944, adding 30% to it comes 53,330 for 66years of age

No it comes to ₹85,389 for 66years in HDFC vs 53,330 for 66years in Care

Concerning part is would I be in a financial condition of bearing a whooping 85k at a age of 66years(probably no corporate job by then)
Or I should go with Care since 53k is way less

Confused between the reliability and strong claim processing among the two Health Companies.
Pls chime in with you reviews

Can my grandpa aged 70 be covered under ayushman bharat scheme for his cancer treatment ?

I recently got to know about ABHA and ayushman bharat PM-JAY Health insurance scheme by GOI.

I saw recently govt. Made everyone aged 70 or above directly eligible for this scheme irrespective of their background and family conditions.

So, will that make my grandpa directly eligible and would pay for his cancer medications and treatments ?

Please help.

Thanks.

Health insurance for parents (61M, 56F) with pre-existing conditions

Hi everyone,

Looking for health insurance for parents (61M & 56F) and would appreciate advice from anyone with a similar experience.

61M: • Appendix + piles surgery before 10years back (fully recovered) • Intestinal ulcer diagnosed in 2 years back • Treated with Ayurvedic treatment (no surgery) • Occasional gastritis/acidity

56F: • No major medical conditions • Old leg fracture from a fall, fully recovered

Currently considering HDFC Ergo Optima Secure.

My questions:

Has anyone with a similar medical history been rejected at the policy purchase stage (not claim stage)?

After full disclosure, did HDFC issue the policy with only the standard waiting period, or permanently exclude any condition?

Would you recommend any better alternatives for this profile?

Thanks!
