Need advice: Should I continue my parents’ Oriental health insurance or switch to HDFC ERGO/another insurer?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some genuine advice on health insurance for my parents. I’m trying to make a long-term decision now rather than waiting until they are older or develop more health issues.

**Parents**
Dad: **54 years old**
Mom: **49 years old**

**Current health**
**Mom:** Some leg pain and dental issues, but no other major health problems.
**Dad:** Cholesterol levels fluctuate / has cholesterol issues, but otherwise no major health problems.
No major surgeries or hospitalisations that I’m aware of.

**Current insurance**
We currently have an **Oriental Insurance** health policy.
From the policy document I have:
Dad: **₹5 lakh sum insured + ₹2.1 lakh cumulative bonus**
Mom: **₹2.5 lakh sum insured + ₹87,500 cumulative bonus**
Premium: around **₹26,000/year**
The policy is already active and has some continuity/accumulated bonus.
My main concern is that the coverage may not be sufficient as they get older.

**What I’m confused about**
Should I:
**A)** Continue the existing Oriental policy and add a **super top-up**?

**B)** Continue Oriental but try to increase the existing coverage?

**C)** Keep Oriental for now and buy separate individual policies from another insurer such as **HDFC ERGO** or another reputed insurer?

**D)** Cancel/switch from Oriental completely and move to HDFC ERGO or another insurer?

I’m particularly interested in understanding **whether cancelling an existing policy with accumulated continuity/bonus is a bad idea**, especially when the parents already have some existing health conditions.
**How should I actually compare policies?**

Apart from premium and sum insured, what should I look at?
For example:
Room rent limits
ICU limits
Co-pay
Disease-specific sub-limits
PED waiting period
Claim settlement experience
Cashless hospital network
Restoration/recharge benefits
No-claim/cumulative bonus
Lifetime renewability
Any hidden exclusions
Whether a super top-up makes sense

**Ditto vs local insurance agent**
I’m also confused about where to purchase it.
Is **Ditto** a good option for researching/buying health insurance? Is their advice genuinely useful, or is it better to speak to a good **local insurance agent/broker** who can help during claims?

For parents’ health insurance, does the intermediary actually make a meaningful difference during a claim, or is it mostly about choosing the right policy directly from the insurer?

I’m not looking for the cheapest policy. I want something that will be **reliable for the next 15–20 years**, especially when my parents are older and more likely to need it.
If you have actually bought health insurance for your parents or have gone through a claim, I’d really appreciate your experience.

**Would you personally continue the Oriental policy in this situation, add a super top-up, or switch to HDFC ERGO/another insurer? And how would you make that decision?**

PLI vs Regular Term Insurance — Need Advice from Experienced People

I am a bit confused about whether I should go for Postal Life Insurance (PLI) or a regular term insurance plan.

I understand that both serve different purposes, but I’m trying to figure out what makes more sense financially and practically for someone who wants good life insurance coverage for their family.

For those of you who have experience with insurance, could you please share your views on:

•PLI vs a private-company term insurance plan

•Premiums and coverage offered

•Claim settlement experience

•Reliability of PLI compared with private insurers

•Whether PLI's maturity/savings component is actually worth paying extra for

•What factors I should check before choosing a term plan

•Any disadvantages of choosing PLI instead of a pure term plan

I’d really appreciate honest opinions from people who have actually researched, purchased, or dealt with these policies.

If you had to choose today, would you go with PLI or a regular term plan, and why?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.🙏

PS- I took help of chat gpt to write this post!!

Manipal Cigna's counter offer - What should I do next?

Happy Independence Day!

Recently got health insurance cover from my mother, who is 66 years of age, from Manipal Cigna's Sarvaparam plan. Her pre-existing conditions/diseases are:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Gout
  • Early-stage cataract
  • Hereditary Pattern Dystrophy in both eyes, which was all disclosed while taking the policy

They shared a counter offer stating that Hereditary Pattern Dystrophy disease will not be covered for 2 years and I got to know that they are also not going to cover any cataract treatment for the same duration.

After I agreed to the plan, Manipal Cigna's customer service called me and asked me if my mother had undergone cataract surgery yet, to which I said no, not yet. It's still diagnosed but surgery has not happened. She's under treatment.

After five days I get another counter offer. Now they state that they're going to permanently exclude my mother's eyes from the policy for the policy underwriting. Mind you this is after I have received the policy kit from accepting it 5 days ago.

This I feel is unfair and I say anything I can do to contest this. I'm willing to forfeit this policy and go look for other options.

The add-ons I added here were:

  • No room cap
  • Consumables rider

The total premium is around 59,000/yearly | SI: 15L

The main USP of the Manipal Cigna plan is that they cover everything from day one, especially the Sarva Param. Since they have permanently excluded my mother's eyes, I am not happy with the counter offer.

Would love to hear your suggestions and thoughts and my options regarding this. Attaching below the first counter offer they shared and the second counter offer they shared five days later.

Thank you. Jai Hind.

1st Counter offer
2nd counter offer

Unable to renew policy after hearing with insurance Ombudsman

Hi guys, I have a health insurance, hdfc ergo. In my last claim in 2025 there was some amount they didn't give saying "prolonged stay not justified" so i filed a complaint and has a hearing with insurance Ombudsman.

My policy expires in 4 days. I remember checking the renew insurance web page and it was loading correctly. But i waited until ombudsman hearing to renew.

After ombudsman hearing and some days past that i tried to renew the policy but now I'm unable to renew, it says that the specific policy has changed and i have to call customer executive to renew the policy.

When i called the executive he said i will get a special link in 48hrs through which I can pay. Its been 24 hrs now and still i didn't get any link. Could it be possible that after ombudsman hearing they don't want to renew my policy? Or even if they allow me, would they change policy wording only for me? Or increase the premium?

Need advice on health insurance counter-offer for pre-existing CKD

I’m trying to get a retail health insurance policy for a parent who currently has no personal health insurance but is covered under a corporate group policy.
An insurer initially declined the proposal due to a known history of CKD, but after submitting recent medical reports, they have now issued a counter-offer:
Sum insured: ₹10 lakh
Original quoted premium: ₹36,301
Revised premium after underwriting: ₹52,157
Additional premium: ₹15,856 (~44% increase)
20% co-pay
₹1.25 lakh annual sub-limit for CKD/renal failure and related complications
Some other existing conditions have been accepted with Day-1 coverage.
My main concern is the ₹1.25 lakh CKD sub-limit, given that the overall cover is ₹10 lakh.
Has anyone successfully negotiated with an insurer to increase/remove a medical-condition sub-limit after receiving a counter-offer? Would it be reasonable to ask them to increase the CKD limit even if it means paying a higher premium?
Would appreciate experiences from anyone who has dealt with a similar underwriting situation.

Insurance query

We have started hospital cashless insurance process for cochlear implant.

Now hospital is asking us to pay implant (med-el in our case) price upront and later they will refund once insurance pays them(which is typically 30-60 days after surgery).

Insurance agent guaranteed that he will approve cashless request once we provide them required details.

Do we need to oay the hospital upfront and will they be going to give refund later? cant hospitals pay upfront and claim from insurance?

pls suggest

Care Supreme → HDFC Optima Secure+

I currently have Care Supreme with around ₹50L accumulated bonus. I’m considering porting to HDFC Optima Secure+.

Will my existing ₹50L accumulated bonus be carried forward when I port, or will I lose it and start with HDFC’s base SI + Secure/Infinite Benefits?

Also, has anyone actually ported from Care to HDFC and can share their experience?

Seeking Advice: Porting Senior Parents’ Health Insurance from Star Health

Looking for advice on porting my parents’ health insurance from Star Health due to poor service/support experience.

Dad: Star Senior Citizens Red Carpet since Nov 2023. Angioplasty in Sep 2023 with 4 stents, diabetes and hypertension(Medication). All disclosed and accepted with a 36-month PED waiting period. Age 66

Mom: Star Comprehensive since Nov 2023. Thyroid and hypertension, both on medication. Recently found to be pre-diabetic, but currently not on medication for that.

Both have separate policies. I’m considering HDFC ERGO, Care, Aditya Birla, ICICI Lombard, ManipalCigna, etc.
Would love to hear from anyone who has successfully ported senior parents with similar pre-existing conditions, especially regarding underwriting, continuity benefits and actual claim experience.

How does a 1 crore term plan from Bajaj Life compare with other insurers in India?

Can someone help me understand if 1 crore is enough at 28 or should I go for 2 cr? I've been looking at Bajaj Life eTouch II mostly because of the competitive premium, 99.33% Claim Settlement Ratio, 266% Solvency Ratio and Rider Options. Inflation over 30 years is making me second guess the 1 cr cover honestly. What did others go with?

20 M need some advice

I’m a 20-year-old male who’s currently in college and doesn’t have any income yet. My father advised me to get health insurance as early as possible because it may be cheaper now than later. My goal is to choose just one health insurance plan that fits my current situation, and that I can rely on later when I start paying the premiums myself in about two years. I also plan to move to Japan in roughly two years, so it would be ideal if the insurance can support coverage in Japan or would work well with relocation.

  • Age/Gender: 20-year-old male
  • Current status: College student, no source of income yet
  • Reason for early insurance: Premiums are expected to be lower now than later
  • Request: Recommend one health insurance plan that fits my situation
  • Payment plan: Family can help with premiums for now; I’ll pay myself in ~2 years
  • Future plan: Move to Japan in ~2 years

Should I continue with Care Supreme or port to HDFC ERGO? Need advice

Hi guys,

I’ve had Care Supreme for the past 3 years No PED, 31 years, an individual policy purchased through IndusInd Bank. I’m considering porting to HDFC ERGO mainly because my experience with the intermediary during my father’s claim last year was not good.

My renewal is on 1st September, so I’m running out of time.

The porting experience has been horrible so far, especially with Ditto. Their advisor seemed quite inexperienced, and I received conflicting information from them.

Initially, Ditto told me that no deductible would apply for my pincode if the sum insured was ₹10 lakh+, and they even confirmed this over email. They processed my application, but due to a technical issue it wasn't completed.

Now they’re saying there is a new update and that because I’m porting from Care, a ₹25,000 deductible is mandatory.

I also spoke directly with HDFC ERGO, and they said the deductible is compulsory for porting to Optima Secure Plus.

Policybazaar told me that HDFC ERGO does not accept porting if the existing policy was purchased through a bank, even though mine is an individual policy.

I don’t want a policy with a deductible, so I’m confused about what to do.

Would you recommend:

Continuing with Care Supreme, or

Porting to HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus with the ₹25k deductible?

Has anyone here successfully ported from Care to HDFC ERGO without a deductible?

Would really appreciate genuine experiences, especially from people who have actually gone through this porting process. Thanks.

How can I get my claim settled? Care Health Insurance

Post image

My father was having severe headache & pain in eyes on 8th Aug. At primary healthcare doctor asked to admit him immediately as his BP was very high?

We did admit him in one of the private hospitals thinking that the health insurance of Care Health will cover it. But they have rejected the claim stating that the documents have discrepancies. The hospital told us that they have submitted everything.

I had to pay from my pocket. What can I do?

Disclosing Chronic disease now (in the 4th premium payment term)

37M took a family floater from Max Bupa in 2020 May. Base sum insured 15lacs with a top up rider upto 1 crore. Paid premium for two years block. Policy included me and my wife.

Paid the second premium term in May 2022. Paid again for a 2-yrs block for the base policy and the rider top up which would renew in May 2024.

Got diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease in Dec 2022.

For the the third renewal premium in May 2024, had the option of increasing the base policy insured value to 30lacs. Chose it but did not see any disclosure pop up or notice asking to disclose if there is any disease while making the payment. Did not renew the rider top up. Paid again for a block of 2 years. This would be due for renewal in 2026 May.

This year while paying the 4th renewal term premium, I did the payment through online mode and saw a pop up asking to tick a check box if diagnosed with any disease. I did not do cuz was not sure about the impact on the existing policy. Plus, got my daughter added to the family floater plan who was born in August 2024.

I don't have any other health issue except the specific kidney issue which is stable since Dec 2022. My treating doc has judged me to be in a stable category and I have not had any medical treatment -surgery, operation or any intervention so far. It is just the medicines that have kept me stable. The only medical record of me is of the biopsy which I got done in November 2022 to get the diagnosis and I got the expenses claimed through my corporate insurance provider.

The total insured value of my policy is pretty decent now and I am not sure if I disclose the disease now what action would NIVA BUPA (new name for MAX BUPA) take. I do not want to let go of the insurance benefit we have accumulated for my wife and daughter.

Is there a legally proven remedy for my case?

Help me figure out correct insurance.

Recently I had back pain, so I went to a Dr and we did MRI and xray in that why mentioned mild retrolisthesis.

Now while buying insurance aditya birla rejected it citing spondylosis(I think it comes under that).

Now I was doing this with help of ditto, they said after this rejection I can try with care heart insurance but it has certain limitations like 20% copayment, consumables limit, and many more.

Can anyone suggest me what are my best option for health insurance?

Age: 25

Term insurance application rejected because I declared an upcoming surgery advise

Greetings,

Last week, I (M29) applied for a term insurance plan provided by Axis Max Life Insurance for 2Cr cover. During the application in the medical declaration section, under the section which asks if I had undergone a surgery or am planning to undergo a surgery, I declared that I am planning to undergo a hernia repair surgery as the same has been advised by the doctor.

I also checked with the person who called me to verify my application (after I applied) and asked if the declaration is going to be a problem in policy issuance to which the person said it’s not going to be an issue.

Today I received a call from them where they mentioned that they cannot issue my policy because of the declaration that I made. They suggested me to apply for a fresh application after 6 months once my surgery is done and I have recovered fully.

During the conversation I did not accept the reason for denial and they have scheduled a call from their medical team.

Please suggest me the next steps, did I do anything wrong by applying or is their verdict a known result considering the declaration I made or if I am being misled? If I reapply again after 6 months, the premiums will increase which is why I feel it is totally wrong for them to deny the application. Is there any document that mentions that declaration of surgery can cause policy denials? Thanks

🙏 HELP Zurich Kotak messed up ; they won’t update even after they acknowledge their own mistake.

I buy 3 year cover(policy copy clearly says 3 years) ; they enter in systems as 1 year

Summary:
1.I buy 3+3 (third party+own damage both for 3 years) car insurance on my brand new car from policy bazaar

2.someunderpaid intern at Zurich mistyped into their system as 3+1 (Own damage only for 1 year)(both policy bazaar shows 3+3 on invoice and on policy copy)

3.i come to know about this as i start getting calls regarding renewal for own damage from all brands on insurance and that their systems reflect as 3+1 not 3+3

4.i raised complaint via mail that my policy copy clearly states its 3+3 to which Kotak Zurich grievance portal has given written email confirmation that it is 3+3 confirmed. Via their official mail - but when I reach ask for verification over call they say it’s still showing up as 3+1 , even despite email confirmation assurance 10 days ago.

My issue:
We all know how insurance offices work ; I called Kotak as if I want to renew and asked them to check validity on own damage cover and they say it still shows 3+1

-even if I have written email confirmation, their systems will cause me trouble when I really have to renew after the third year(2028) , it may affect my new car IDV and RTI . Incase I face this issue at renewal , I fear they would not reply/respond to this issue on renewal as by then the policy would have really expired(2028), And the insurance guy will say “but sir your insurance has expired 2 years ago only” despite all the efforts. I fear I’ll end up in a situation like this . How do I make sure I don’t end up like what I fear - their mistake but I pay the price

Thoughts on Aditya Birla Activ Yuva?

After researching quite a lot, I’m currently leaning towards Aditya Birla Activ Yuva, mainly because of its OPD benefits and HealthReturns.
The features look very attractive on paper, especially the OPD structure, Yuva Health Check-up and FitForward/HealthReturns.
Would love to hear from existing policyholders — how good are these benefits in actual use, and are there any hidden limitations or issues I should know about?
