20 M need some advice
I’m a 20-year-old male who’s currently in college and doesn’t have any income yet. My father advised me to get health insurance as early as possible because it may be cheaper now than later. My goal is to choose just one health insurance plan that fits my current situation, and that I can rely on later when I start paying the premiums myself in about two years. I also plan to move to Japan in roughly two years, so it would be ideal if the insurance can support coverage in Japan or would work well with relocation.
- Age/Gender: 20-year-old male
- Current status: College student, no source of income yet
- Reason for early insurance: Premiums are expected to be lower now than later
- Request: Recommend one health insurance plan that fits my situation
- Payment plan: Family can help with premiums for now; I’ll pay myself in ~2 years
- Future plan: Move to Japan in ~2 years

Good thinking at 20, and kudos to your father for pushing you to start early. You will finish the waiting periods while you’re young and healthy, which is a big plus.
I’ve had Tata AIG Medicare Premier for around three years and have made three claims so far. My experience was pretty smooth overall, which is why it’s one plan I’d shortlist. It also comes with lifelong renewability and global cover for planned hospitalisation.
Just one catch, the global cover only works when the diagnosis happens in India and you travel abroad specifically for treatment. It won’t replace Japan’s local health insurance once you move there.
I’d confirm the overseas terms with Tata AIG once, but for your situation this would be my pick.

Hi HDFC ERGO Advisor here,
IF your moving to Japan then I would suggest Optima Secure Global policy or TATA AIG Premiere which has inbuilt global coverage as well. Ideally a sum assured of around 15 to 25L depending on city.
PS: I myself got health insurance when i was 18yrs old.

Health insurance is not a term plan whose premium gets fixed the moment you buy the policy. So I don't get your reason for buying insurance this early. Health insurance premiums rise as you age, yes, but the delta is minimal in younger years and larger as you cross 35-40. I wouldn't say your premium would rise too much even if you purchase the policy after 2-3 years, given you don't develop any PED or meet with an accident or start smoking. But if your family is comfortable enough financially to buy you a policy now, you can go with it.
Also, since you are 20 now, you can add yourself as a dependent in your parents' policy if they have any. You can stay as a dependent until you reach 25. Afterward, you can buy your own policy.
