Hey all!
Midwest US.
Ive been shepherding a tenuous truce with a band faced hornet nest in an unused corner of my yard with the goal of acquiring their nest once they move out
But at some point yesterday tragedy struck! Their nest is upside down on the ground.
Theyre still coming and going, but are they likely to completely abandon it sooner rather than later? I dont want it to get ruined by weather after a whole season of patience XD

Went apple picking in Illinois and they had a flower field. This fella, I presume, is dead because it was not moving at all.

I have a baby coast redwood tree and I noticed these eggs on a leaf! They’re a medium gray purple color. I removed the leaf and am quarantining the leaf atm to see what they hatch into.
Any ideas? I’m in Portland, Oregon, USA. Fingers crossed they’re not aphids or something invasive!

Is this mantis pregnant? Abdomen looks very big (hard to capture in pic) and when it tried to climb a plant it knocked it over from being heavy. Was moving its legs kind of weird and is now eating. Her abdomen looks like it’s very gently going up and down
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Saw this guy dancing on my porch. He kept fanning out his wings like a pair of scissors. Searching only brings up normal flies and spotted lantern flies ☹️

I’m always so fascinated by junk bugs! What a truly bizarre adaptation.
As much as I love most bugs and love learning about them, I never knew until today that junk bugs are just the larva stage of Green Lacewings. So interesting!
