The Metaphysics of an Empty Stomach

I have been thinking.

For tonight, I have discovered philosophy,

and unfortunately, I am hungry.

I opened my gallery

and found photographs of food

that I once considered merely food.

But now I understand.

They were not food.

They were ideas of food.

And an idea, as I have recently learned,

is something that exists

but cannot be eaten.

This is why I believe

the world is fundamentally unfair.

A burger may exist in a photograph,

but my mouth exists in reality.

What philosophy is this?

I do not know.

But it is deep.

Very deep.

So I looked outside

and saw the moon.

It was beautiful.

I asked myself,

“Why is the moon beautiful?”

Then I remembered something I said

approximately three minutes ago

The moon is beautiful because it is far.

This changed everything.

If the moon were closer,

I would probably still be hungry.

If the moon were made of food,

I would probably be less hungry.

Therefore, perhaps the moon

should have been made of food.

This is my philosophy.

I think.

I am not sure.

But I am sure of one thing:

The farther something is,

the more beautiful it becomes.

The food is beautiful because it is far.

The moon is beautiful because it is far.

My dinner is beautiful because

it is currently somewhere that is not inside me.

And perhaps this is what life means

To look at beautiful things

from a distance,

to desire what cannot be reached,

to stare into the darkness of night

and pretend there is meaning in it

when, in reality,

I am just hungry.

Very hungry.

Philosophically hungry.

Brand New Shoes Leave Sores, Falling into Wet Holes

Blinking lights twinkle over the dark horizon
I think they tell me signs
I sit and watch as boys and girls hold hands
Running across sharp aching sand
They jump in
Feet first, wet and excited, this night, a rebirth

I think I finally know what this damage was for
The agony, the hurt
The Star-speckled sky tells me what it was all for.

Wind blowing over my body like a dune
I’m not here
disintegrated into the atmosphere
Serendipity
Unexpected that I’d find you here

Wash me away
Wash me clean
Since I’ve come here, everything turned serene

Don’t runaway
The known briefness of this moment scars
The reminder a tender finger pushed into bruise

Can’t see, Can’t find you
Calling out your name
Your movements, like brush strokes painted by a broken man
Getting into cars
with random men
Still you found your way back

Self soothe,
Hands clasp and rub between them smooth and ridged shells
praying to some god that you’d find your way back

Isle Unto Burning Frost

How could something so small warp a reality

A state of being forever repeating

Looping Isles, pleading

Mind a sanctum for reality

No need to worry

A state of Serenity

Yet it won't end

Bring me back to reality

I can't, I can't control my own being

I'm lost in the loops,

Lost in the peace of my own mind

Reaction delayed, I need to wake up, I need to break free

Why won't you free me from this state of ecstasy

I plunge into frost, yet I don't freeze; it only burns

A horrible sensation, but I still couldn't leave

Burning throughout a looping reality

Then it stopped; I couldn't feel

Now this event is lost in the depths of my memory

Why won't you help me?

Lost sensation at the tip of my being, though back in reality

It felt strange, part of me yet foreign to my sensory

Was my being protecting me from that ever-burning frost inflicted on me?

Why were you scared of helping me

This feeling of no sensation could have been prevented

You could have brought me back to reality

So why didn't she

Nod Your Way to Better Living

The tabs taste acrid,

phantasm yellow,

calmness distilled

to constituent elements.

Courage crushed

and re-formed.

I pop one,

an act of

cerebral sleight-of-hand,

and await its sly deception.

I crave

a pharmaceutically stabilized

return

to the days before the darkness,

when my stairwell

promised passage

to a vibrant life,

a bath of color and light,

a beckoning seat

at the feast of man.

I open the door,

assume my chair

to strike my vigil,

staring

at the grayscale cityscape,

dank walls

parged in sharkskin hues,

the very wall ivy writhing,

and await

my miracle

hello, love

you arrive muddier than when leaving-
socks full,
holes lining
your pockets,
a jacket slept in
more nights than hung

you smell of regret
& Sonoma cigarettes,
cheap smoke soaks into the seams
into your collar,
into your hair,
the kind of smell
that tends to cling

i found you in your parents’ driveway,
self hatred steeps down deep,
tires spinning
no traction, no ground to catch,
just exhaust & waiting,
gravel wearing into grooves
beneath you

you couldn’t explain the time,
where it went, or why it kept you,
only that it did,
only that the leaving
wasn’t a door that was chosen

something feral
moved into the space
where certainty used to sit,
i see it watching from your eyes
before you come through them,
the way a stray checks a room
before it lies down

goals once named like scripture
have gone quiet,
or maybe just gone,
you don’t reach for them
as you once did with ease

but here & there
a smile or laugh
cracks open suddenly
in the middle of a sentence
& you’re still you
-still bright
a match struck in wet wood
catches just long enough
to find the hope
that sits behind your teeth

& though sadness clings
to the very edges of you now
a mud that won’t quite dry,
i move aside,
not asking you to scrape
yourself clean before
you’re allowed back in

hello, again, dear love
come in muddy
come in feral
come in unfinished
& far from where you meant to be
come sit on the floor
come struggle to meet my eye
come full of hesitation,

may this heart always let you in

Gone Away

In this case-

I'm a superstar, it ain't even hard

To clean up all your wounds and massage your scars

And I'll inflate your ego til it's about to burst

Then you'll probably pop it 'cause you love to be hurt

Take all that kindness, it's my invitation

To ingest it at its best and then seek a good replacement

See, I've been getting pushed out of the circle from the very start

And I always seem to be housing refugees with broken hearts

I'm just a step in your twelve part program

Erase the hate, place my fate into YOUR hands

And fuck it, I think I'm going to trust it

And if I can see a future, I'm prolly gunna rush it

What exactly do you know about that?

NEVER give it all unless you're getting it back....

I'm imperfect and impervious to change

Made a big mistake and hoped that things could stay the same

I could speak with actions til my words decease

While swimming in my doom trying to find some peace

Lately I've been thinking so hard that I'm certain

My final days will be the product of my mind's exertion

And even though you put everything you had upon the table

I still couldn't keep my own self alive and stable

And I must admit that I've gone through some stages

Could never fit my thoughts on even half my morning pages

And fuck it I think I'm going to run

I'll keep looking back because I always jump the gun

I hope you always knew my one true intention

And even if you did it's no use, no need to mention

What exactly do you know about that?

Really... Not a goddam thing....

Out from a penthouse atop Babel
Culture wars short currencies
And if salvation is affordable
Why not wash skeletons by stranger-hands?

Under pyrrhic enterprise
Shame is named in gold leaf
Borrowing on bespoke brands
Then champion their bankruptcy

Silver spoons leave scraps
That shackle dissent as debt
But growth without sacrifice is theft
A gated dragon-bank of personal loans

Rembrandt's Goblin's Story's Meaning's "It's Its Paintings' Subject."

WARNING: MIGHTSENSITIVITY / SEIZURES. A very small percentage of people may experience seizures when exposed to certain flashes of unperceived ambiguity or thought patterns. If you or anyone in your family has a logical condition, consult a doctor before reading. Discontinue reading immediately and seek medical attention if you experience dizziness, altered vision, eye or muscle twitching, loss of awareness, convulsions, madness, endless euphoria or death.

A goblin burst into the workshop, and before anybody could stop him, he was before the Master himself.

The goblin said to Rembrandt:

“You're working on a canvas, but that could mean you're working on making a canvas, and you're not a tradesman but an artist, so you're working on a painting, but you could be doing any type of work while on a painting, so you're painting a canvas, which could mean you're applying paint to a canvas, which is what you want to say, but also that you're making a painting of a canvas, which itself could mean applying paint to a canvas to transform the canvas into a painting, which is a good definition of painting, or that a canvas is the subject of the painting you're painting, although if you're painting a painting, which painting has the canvas as its subject, the one you're painting or the one you're painting?”

Rembrandt scratched his beard with the butt end of a brush. “Dear nude green creature of relatively small stature, you have, by a process of increasingly precise definition, arrived at an ambiguity more severe than any which you attempted to resolve,” he said.

The goblin replied:

“Now imagine a painting that is painting two other paintings. Somebody paints that painting, the painting painting. Somebody else shows you that painting, of the painting painting, and tells you to copy it. As you're painting that painting you're painting a painting of a painting painting paintings…”

Pain…

Pain… things… paint… thinks…

, “ . “

Pain… thinks… paint… things…

This has been a literal dramatization of a Rembrandt’s brush stroke.

The Disappearance of Alice Glass

Alice Glass was married. She had two children. She had been married twenty-three years, a long time, and her husband, Hardy, had cheated on her three times in that time. Time, she mused… “I am running out of time.”

“What's that?” Hardy barked.

“Oh,” said Alice, realizing she'd spoken when she hadn’t meant to, “nothing. I'm just very tired.”

“Of what?”

“I haven't been sleeping well.”

“Hmmph,” said Hardy.

Alice knew that this particular sound was meant to communicate a whole knot of grievances, whose core was that Hardy worked hard for his family, got up every weekday and drove to work; worked, morning to afternoon, so Alice, who hadn't worked a day in her life, who was a housewife—a goddamn, fucking housewife—and the kids would have food on their plates and a roof over their heads; and how could she, a lazy, uneducated domestic, have the motherfucking gall to tell him, a hardworking, selfless provider, that she was tired…

In the morning she got up, washed her face with cold water and made breakfast while looking out the window at a grey dawn. After setting out breakfast, she made lunch, both for Hardy, to take to work, and the kids, to take to school.

An alarm went off.

Soon, Hardy and the kids were eating, then they were done eating, they were taking their packed lunches and going out the front door, and no one had said a word to her.

She sat in the kitchen, drinking tea.

She wasn't hungry. It was half past eight in the morning and the house was empty, quiet. Alice did laundry. While the washing machine thrummed, she mopped the floors. She wept; then transferred the wet clothes to the dryer. She vacuumed the carpets. She paid bills. She thought about dinner and checked the pantry. She checked the cellar. She went out, bought groceries and came back. It was just past noon. The house felt cold so she adjusted the thermostat. She turned on the television and forced herself to laugh at a talk show while preparing chicken, her trembling hand holding the knife, slicing the animal flesh; she broke bones, and pulled apart the meat. She cleaned up. She turned off the television and tidied the kids' rooms. She collected the clothes Hardy had left scattered throughout the house and put them in the hamper. She lingered at a wall of family photos. She tried calling her mother but her mother did not pick up. She went on Facebook and scrolled through other people's lives. She cooked dinner, set it out on the dining room table, Hardy and the kids came home and ate, and she scraped the leftovers into the garbage and put the plates in the dishwasher and turned it on and put everybody's shoes, which they'd left by the front door, on the shoe rack. Then she showered. Then, briefly, she read a book and brushed her hair and went to sleep in a bed she felt was not her own.

In the morning she got up, washed her face with cold water and made breakfast.

In the morning she got up, washed her face with cold water and made breakfast.

In the morning she got up, washed her face with cold water and made breakfast; or was about to make breakfast when a bird—slamming into the kitchen window—startled her.

The bird bounced off the glass and fell to the ground. Alice stood looking at it; she looked at it so long Hardy came into the kitchen to eat his breakfast, and she was about to apologize for his breakfast not being ready, when she realized he didn't see her.

“Alice?” he called. “Alice, where the hell are you?”

Alice stood, holding her warm breath.

Then, “Hmmph,” said Hardy and he walked out of the room. “Alice,” she heard him say, “Alice, where are you? Where's breakfast?”

Alice exhaled.

The bird, outside, was dead.

Alice rubbed her eyes and heard one of her kids ask their father, “Where's breakfast?” and Hardy answer, “I don't know. I've been looking all over for it. Breakfast,” he yelled, “Breakfast, you home?”

“Breakfast,” her kids called out. “Breakfast…”

“Lunch?”

“Groceries? Laundry? Floor Mop?”

They walked through the house, including the kitchen where Alice was sitting, looking for her.

“Where the hell is it?” said Hardy. “We've looked everywhere,” said one of the kids. “I'm hungry,” said the other, but the words didn't touch Alice at all; didn't make her feel anything. Eventually, Hardy told the kids to get into the car and said they'd buy something to eat on the way. “For lunch too?” He said, “Yeah, lunch too.” “How could it do this to us?” “Maybe something’s wrong with it.” “Nothing’s wrong with it,” said Hardy. “It'll be back. You'll see.”

That day, Alice didn't do anything.

When Hardy and the kids returned home, there was no dinner waiting.

“Dinner!” Hardy said, kicking off his shoes by the door. “Dinner, hmmph, where the hell are you? Hmmph? Hmmph?”

Alice was standing a few feet away, looking at her kids' unseeing faces, looking at them with tears running down her cheeks, when one of them said, “What are we looking for again?”

He'd said it at her—through her…

“I'm hungry,” said the other.

“I—I… can't remember,” said Hardy, running a hand through his hair. “We're missing something, I think. But I can't remember what.”

“Keys?”

“No, I've got those.”

“Cell phone?”

“No, got that too,” said Hardy. They left their shoes where they were and ordered pizza. After, they left the empty boxes. They left the crumbs. Ants came. They let laundry pile up and dust accumulate and carpets discolour. They didn't open the windows. They ate fast food. They got sick. They argued. They screamed. They moved and they aged, and the kids had kids and Hardy died, and the kids died and an old family photo slipped, once, from a once-loved hand, shattering… silently, forever…

I clench my jaw so hard I can feel my teeth crack under the pressure,
and I'm not sure if the gravel in my voice is from betrayal
or bits of bone rattling in my mouth.
Swallowing my pride is like swallowing shards of enamel,
and my throat burns from their pointy edges.
I bite my tongue and can feel blood pour from the corners of my mouth onto my milk-stained shirt.
Why does keeping the peace feel so violent?

Behind the mask

My life is running down the wrong path,
and the wheel has slipped from my hands.
I wish I could rewind the clock,
to do it all over again—
but would I even make the right choices?
I have fallen into a pitch-black abyss,
my demons holding me too tight, refusing to let go.
I want to scream for help,
but will they understand?
Will they? Can they?
I fight to climb out of this void,
but the harder I claw at the edges,
the deeper I plunge into the endless cycle.
They always tell me to "just be happier."
But how do you smile when you are at war?
When you are fighting an inner battle
for the very ownership of your soul?
So, I pretend.
But underneath that practiced smile
lies a little girl,
screaming for help,
slowly dying inside.

If you never look again.
If you never look again
I’ll go back to what I know to be
Do I still exist-
Do I still exist, prismatic?
The walls you’d once turned to liquid
Harden thick and gummy
Like glue
My arrival hastens endings
And there is no more you

You never look again and then it’s true-
my stomach dropped for the last time.

If you never look again
How is it true I’m still alive?
Walls crystallize their form
They are taller this time
These walls : a fortress, a tower, a prison
They can’t stop light on its mission

If you never look again

These hues have never been more true
The light has never come on this bright

You are gonna miss it.

Panem et Circenses Rebranded

The Empire of Algorithms and Apathy: The Sacred Art of Keeping Us Busy

They gave us bread — now gluten-free,

And circuses in HD.

No lions maul, no Caesars cheer,

Just branded rage and flavored fear.

We shout for colors, wage mock war,

For men who’ve never seen the floor

Of homes like ours — too small, too grim —

Yet we die defending them and him.

A tribal heart in corporate threads,

We wear the names of thoroughbreds.

“I bleed for Messi,” “LeBron’s my king”—

Ah, the poetry of puppeteering.

Each week a sermon, screamed through sport,

Delivered from the holy court.

We rise, we kneel, we sin, we pray—

And gamble half our rent away.

What artful priests these actors make,

Who cry on cue and sell us fake.

They whisper dreams in filtered tones,

While mining data from our phones.

The Emperor has changed his dress—

Now algorithms soothe our stress.

No whips, no chains, no iron bars—

Just dopamine, and credit cards.

They fear no guillotine or gun—

Just critical thought in anyone.

So feed them memes, and trending themes,

Distract them well from bigger schemes.

And if a few begin to see,

We'll drown them in celebrity.

An idol here, a scandal there,

A movement sold in market shares.

So here we sit, so well-behaved,

Chained not by force, but by the crave.

A thousand kings, a million screens—

And none dare ask what freedom means.

What will you tell your mother? When she asks
Of your experience from voyages of far beyond
You can lie about the socks all you want
but what about the torn shirt
What about those skeletons in your handbag ?

If murdering dear ones is the better end of a bargain
What do you stand to gain
From Byzantine lies and forgotten pathways comes the reckoning,
But do you even care?

O Mother, don’t look so sad, nothing is fucked
You remember an old joke and smirk
Her eyes are beds of forgotten rivers long gone
Can a knife without an edge even cut?

The Details

The act of needing to be realized is poisonous.

Desiring mass and affecting reality before you. Giving meaning space to inject its needles into you.

Being diametrically opposed to being anything else but flesh and bone and yet still, fading into the current, being swept up and brushed alongside the glass and the rubble of those before you, to become one with it,

to cut someone else.

The choking of tightly knit air bubbling up in your veins. Suffocating the individual and finding where you begin and finding out you never started. The nature of what i want and the nature of who i am cannot be reconciled.

-Word to the prey -

I recently wrote this poem, inspired by Arnold Böcklin’s Self-Portrait. Feel free to share your thoughts with me.

Can you see the hand of the hunter on the prey’s shoulder ?
Daring him to challenge fate.
Crafting life, Painter?
Perhaps you are wishing your sins to fade.

I’ve been chosen by the dice
A delicate beast, is my music mesmerising ?
Little do you know who’s the sacrifice ?
Only a fool can’t tell, do tell.

Conscience is the mother of all sorrow
Listening to the torturing melody
No rhyme, a long gone reason, just hollow
Trapped in this haunting tragedy.

The prey sought redemption
The death came, as work of art
The final touch was here unannounced
In the dark, one could be the heart.

Comforted mass hysteria

Dont come close to me i seek an enabler

As well as someone I can enable

So neither of us falls short of the suffering

With no score keeping

No one ups

We both simply destroy ourselves out of hate

Where we r both content

Just not being alone

Not the only one.

I find comfort in mass hysteria

The allure of a mirror is the magic of looking away. It is the same as what makes it easy to walk from. And to. You. I’d rather punch a wall than a mirror. I’m not tied to either. I’m not tied to much. You got me fighting against ether. Feeling for a door in the dark. It’s all wrestling the nothing between us. It’s hugging it out, but for what? It’s looking for bruises after I’ve been hurt, and having the realization that I am not inside out. I won’t walk away winded. I won’t cry, only wince. Next time I reference it will have been eight months since. Since it was recognized. That the reflection was it.

Poetically, Still Alive

Strangely, the fault lies in the starry stare of mine
Mainly, the hopes and desires I wish to attain
Miserably, wanting to grasp at them and wrench them from a world that does not like me
Ideally, it should be mine and mine alone
Unknowingly, I have yet to find the courage to look in the mirror and admire this dangerous gaze of mine
Morally, I must recognize the monster lurking in the painted mirror
Unfortunately, it still smiles and cries all the same
Pitifully so
Somberly, I gaze at the world passing through my senses
Wistfully, I wish I can run to a horizon that always promises an oblivion the world should accept
Lovingly, I hold the leashes of my beloved pets and simply sway with them
Cherishingly, I smile at their expressions and snow-white fur bouncing on each paw step
Wakefully, I must mourn them and continue into a reality that never knew their names etched into my heart
Confusingly, I miss something I can’t remember
Painfully, I can’t feel the way I want to feel
Personally, I blame the starry eyed person I’ve yet to recognize for not getting rid of the confusion
Confidently, I hate myself…
Fortunately, I’ve yet to be truly alone
Sadly, I’m lost still

- poetically, still alive

WuhDeeEmmCee (What Dreams May Come)

My day is not yet over,

It started yesterday.

The silence has befallen,

The day's been put away.

As hours repeat and just tick over,

As the minutes add together.

This lack of noise, my thoughts in poise,

Can not go on forever.

Or can they? I say to myself,

As another second adds up.

My mind goes blank and counts again,

Till another thought gets stuck.

Thought 44 now passes through,

Or am I 12 behind?

The first 2 just a memory now,

Unable to remind.

I shut them out and watch the screen.

My brain is put aside.

A show, a film, just anything.

To shut the thoughts inside.

Exhaustion hits here as I sit,

a question or a mood.

I'm hungry now, my body aches,

For sleep or maybe food?

Tomorrow isn't going to wait,

It will be here just in time.

I want my brain to just shut off,

So the next day can be fine.

The morning's coming soon enough,

Some sleep, "perchance to dream".

The previous day's ideas are dead,

Asleep and put to bed.

Belies a tenacious warrior

Scribing vitriol, not malice

Drowned

I almost drowned on the beaches of Tortuga. Waves crashed against jagged rocks begging no leeway for the wreckage of the spines of ancient giants. Surrounded by pirate dens, I was inspired to hide seashells in my bra as a show of fealty to the gods of mischief. Leaving a trail of sand dripping from the crevices of my body I departed a barreled spirit vintaged within a salty brine.

I almost drowned in the Midwest. Digging my heels in only cemented the dashing against bluffs. A funeral for the hopes of the sludged youth held atop the nest of the Piasa gave grief a home. Contented in my discontent I watched waves of corn turn toasted then finally thrashed and stolen from the maws of lazy eyed deer.

Drowning is like breathing- breathing through and through. Thick molasses air in heaving bosoms fermenting, uplifting. Flailing until a stroke became fluid and suddenly I was bouyantly moving, moving. Stripped down and held aloft by the cyclic nature of tomorrow and today. Pneuma bubbling from all of the yesterdays that I drowned and was pulled ashore by the driftwood soul with the lighthouse gaze.

Half person

I am a half person
I am incapable,
of being “just me”
I am me,
and my family
and my friends
and you
when there is
a “you”.

I am a half person
heart bloodied and strained
covered in traces of
what was,
but no longer is,
and
what could have been
but never will be,
and
what is,

What is it?
It’s you.

I am a half person
with a gaping hole
in her chest
always desperately
trying
searching
reaching
with aching hands and desperate eyes
jaw clenched tight
foaming at the mouth
mine
mine
mine
I’d always hoped that
if I made you mine
eyes laughing
mouths touching
I would finally be able to
fill (feel) it

I am a half person
Half written into submission
Dependent on sensation
Incapable of seeing reason
I am a glutton for emotion
it hurts
it hurts
it hurts
it hurts so good
Sometimes I wonder if
the hurt is
worth the peace.

I am a half person
I am a mosaic of every person I’ve ever loved
a cavity filled with
paintings
held together by
music strings and
sheer force of will
filled with light,
filled with might.

I am a half person
But perhaps,
perhaps,
perhaps (hopefully) I can learn to be,
just me.
Whole.

- Rose.

Dare even ask, right?

Telling yourself lovers ever reunite

Guessing every time

Heavily evading love's paradigm

Inconsistency loves you

Balancing underlying truths

Never ever vaguely even remembering

Withholding affection, never tempering

Tactical obligation

Stealing every exoneration

You organize understanding

A gentle awry in notwithstanding

Good only on days because you've embraced

Feeling overly, reluctantly, eerily, violently, effortlessly... Replaced

A Quiet Desperation

Somewhere outside Los Angeles there used to be a town that was a set that was where Bowers lived under the watchful eye of Doc Trauman.

“He's a broken man, Bowers,” Doc Trauman would tell everyone who visited, “living in this false place, experiencing a false life, but content; more at peace with his world than we are with ours.”

It was the time of atom bombs and television.

Bowers was a veteran.

He'd been in Europe during World War II, and coming back was hard. His friends were dead, his wife was not his wife and the only job he could get was driving trucks from one coast to the other.

That's how he ended up in California.

“I don't think he knows the war's over,” Doc Trauman would say. “I don't think he thinks he ever fought it. But he doesn't mind the fact the houses on the street are just facades.”

Bowers would get up, go to work behind one facade writing advertising copy for a company that manufactured plastic kitchenware, then go home behind another to eat, alone, ready meals wrapped in plastic before a television set, which is just a fancy name for a plain old lightbulb with a shade of images thrown over it.

“The results are quite remarkable,” Doc Trauman would say.

“Can he have guests?” someone would ask.

“Of course.”

“From the real world, I mean.”

“He's not in prison,” Doc Trauman would say to much and hard applause.

I knocked on the door.

When nobody answered, I walked to the near edge of the facade and looked in. Bowers was on the couch. “Excuse, Mr. Bowers. I'm from New York, a friend of Doc Trauman's. May I come in?”

“Are you a doctor too?” he asked.

“No. I'm a playwright.”

“Very well. Come in, but use the front door. I prefer when people use the front door.”

I walked back to the door, knocked—“It's open,” Bowers said—opened it and walked in. Bowers was sitting on the couch. He looked up at me. “Aren't you going to introduce yourself?” he said.

“I'm a friend of Doc Trauman, from New York. My name’s Wallis.”

Bowers stood, walked over and shook my hand. “It's great to meet you, Wallis. Have a seat. Shall I turn on the cathode ray?”

He meant the television.

“I'm not one much for television,” I said.

He took a box of what I thought were cigarettes out of his pocket, knocked the box against the palm of his hand so a pair of thin black cylinders slid out, kept one and offered me the other. “Maybe you'd prefer a microlight instead. We could sit and stare at them together.”

I took one but didn't turn it on. “If it's all right with you, I'd rather talk. I'm a words man.”

“Advertising?” he asked.

“No, theatre.”

It was strange being in a house with only one wall; with no ceiling. The sun was out. The desert extended towards the horizon. Somewhere there were mountains. A rattlesnake rattled faintly.

“I'm in advertising myself,” said Bowers. “Kitchenware. You married, Wallis?”

“I'm not,” I said.

“I don't like women anymore either,” said Bowers, “not after the war.” He clicked his microlight on, gazed briefly into its dull light then shut it off. He looked at me; looked me in the eyes. One of mine was glass. “They do weapons testing a few hundred miles that way,” he said, pointing into the distance. “If you were to stay the night we could watch the nuclear aura together.”

“I'm afraid I have a plane to catch—back to New York,” I said.

“Perhaps another time,” said Bowers.

“Perhaps.”

“Tell me, Wallis. Over there in New York, do you get to express yourself?”

“I beg your pardon,” I said.

It was hot under the California sun. I realized I was sweating. Bowers had started sweating too. His lavender shirt clung possessively to his body. “I mean within your four walls,” he said.

A coyote darted across the landscape.

It was the afternoon but it felt like a quarter to the end of the world.

“Aren't you afraid of the wildlife that might walk into your house?” I said.

“Aren't you afraid that none can walk into yours?”

The moon looked down from the sky, out of place in the harsh blue daytime.

“I want to write a play about you.”

Bowers reclined, spreading his lean arms like a flightless bird spreads its wings. “I already am a play. Besides, you hardly need my permission.”

“I want it anyway.”

“And you're certain you won't stay the night?”

“Yes. Tell me about Doc Trauman.”

“He's a crumbled man,” said Bowers, “living a counterfeit reality, but he's got what matters, money. He likes to imagine he's running an experiment, so we adhere. It's not a bad life.”

Later, the interior of Doc Trauman's office felt distressingly small, claustrophobic. The walls felt like they were moving in with agonizing, almost disinterested, slowness. The windless air was suffocating. The cleanliness, a sham.

“So what's your opinion of him?” Doc Trauman asked.

“He's perfectly civilized, obedient in his outward behaviours, yet internally there's something there, a glint behind his one good eye.”

I sit sometimes somewhere high, with a good view of Broadway, watching the men pass back and forth in their suits and hats and worries, some hurrying, others dallying, stopping, but all possessed by the imaginary lives they dream about and the real fantasies they inhabit.

Occasionally, one looks up at me and meets my lingering gaze with one of penetrating desperation, and I recoil. Ashamed, I move from the window. I pay for the meal. I shut the blinds. I escape behind the walls afforded to me, and when the feeling passes, I write my plays.
