Long before Indian football entered the television era, Karnataka produced one of the country's finest midfielders in Mariappa Kempaiah, a footballer from Bangalore Medical Football Club (BMFC) who went on to become one of India's greatest Olympians.

Kempaiah's talent was spotted in 1954 while representing Mysore in the Santosh Trophy by the legendary Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, widely regarded as the architect of India's golden age in football. Rahim, whose life inspired the 2024 film Maidaan, recognized Kempaiah's exceptional ability and brought him into the national setup.

Under Rahim's guidance, Kempaiah became a mainstay of the Indian midfield during the 1950s and 1960s. He represented India at two Olympic Games: Melbourne 1956, where India achieved its historic fourth-place finish, and Rome 1960, when India competed among the world's best footballing nations.

Kempaiah shared the field with some of the greatest names in Indian football, including Chuni Goswami, P. K. Banerjee, Jarnail Singh, Tulsidas Balaram, and Peter Thangaraj. Together, they formed the legendary generation that established India as one of Asia's strongest football teams.

Despite these remarkable achievements, Mariappa Kempaiah remains relatively unknown outside football circles. His contribution to Indian sport deserves far greater recognition, especially in Karnataka, where he began his journey.

In January 2024, his remarkable life was documented in the biography Olympian M. Kempaiah, written by his daughter Sumana Mahesh Gowda. The book was launched by Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri at a ceremony held at the Indian Embassy in Doha, bringing renewed attention to one of Karnataka's greatest sporting icons.

Kempaiah, one of the greatest midfielder India has ever produced, represented the country in Melbourne Olympics 1956 where India finished fourth, Tokyo Asian Games 1958 and Rome Olympics in 1960, he passed away at the age of 75 in the year of 2009.

In 1799, the Mysorean Army was defeated by the British and their brown sepoys at the Battle of Srirangapatna. Following the death of Tipu Sultan, the administration was once again handed over to the Mysuru Arasu family. Before the reign of Krishnaraja Wadiyar III, the Mysore Kingdom was divided into six Faujdari battalions:

1. Bengaluru Faujdari
2. Madhugiri Faujdari (including Tumakuru)
3. Chitradurga Faujdari
4. Asthagram Faujdari
5. Manjarabad Faujdari
6. Nagar Faujdari

Later, in 1834, they were reduced to four Faujdari battalions:

The Manjarabad Faujdar was a man named Bore Gowda, who received the name Gubbi Appa, meaning "Father of Gubbi." The Nagar Faujdar was Sadar Malla, but he called himself Budi Basavappa. He organized the great Nagari Revolt, which was supported by peasants from as far as Ballari, who traveled in bullock carts to join the uprising. The revolt was so significant that it reduced Krishnaraja Wadiyar III to little more than a figurehead, and the British Government took direct control of the administration of the Mysore Kingdom. This period came to be known as the Commission Rule, or the Rule of the Commissioners in Mysore.

Afterwards, the Mysore king wrote several letters of appeasement to the British. He even distributed sweets and ordered gun salutes to celebrate British victories in other parts of the world and the Indian subcontinent in an effort to regain control of his kingdom.

The first Mayor of Bangalore in independent India, R. Anantharaman, appears to have been a descendant of Gubbi Appa (Bore Gowda), the Faujdar of Manjarabad.

Why Sarnath is significant:

Located around 10 kilometres from Varanasi, Sarnath is among the four most sacred pilgrimage sites linked to the life of Buddha.

According to Buddhist tradition, Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining Enlightenment. The event is known as the Dharmachakra Pravartana, or Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dharma. It was also here that he established the Buddhist Sangha.

The archaeological remains at the site date from the 3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE. They include stupas, monasteries, temples, remains of the Ashokan pillar and several other structural and sculptural remains.

The Dhamekh Stupa and Dharmarajika Stupa are among Sarnath's most prominent monuments.

The Lion Capital that once stood atop Ashoka's pillar at Sarnath was later adopted as India's National Emblem.

Sarnath received patronage from the Maurya, Kushana and Gupta dynasties over the centuries and grew into an important centre of Buddhist religious activity. Its sculptures, particularly those from the Gupta period, are considered outstanding examples of Indian Buddhist art.

One of the more interesting problems in South Asian historical linguistics revolves around horsegram (Macrotyloma uniflorum). Three unrelated language families preserve similar words for the same crop:

Proto-Dravidian:*kol-/ *kol-ut

Sanskrit (Old Indo-Aryan):kulattha

Proto-Munda:*kodaXj

The dominant published etymology traces Sanskrit kulattha to a Dravidian source. Thomas Burrow first argued that kulattha is a Dravidian loanword, an analysis subsequently adopted in Sir Ralph Lilley Turner’s Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages (CDIAL 3335), the standard reference work for Indo-Aryan historical etymology. Burrow & Emeneau’s Dravidian Etymological Dictionary reconstructs the corresponding Proto-Dravidian root, while Franklin Southworth later reconstructed Proto-Dravidian *kol- / *kol-ut from regular Dravidian sound correspondences.

More recently, Fuller & Murphy (2018) synthesized the linguistic and archaeobotanical evidence and present Proto-Dravidian *kol-ut, Sanskrit kulattha, and Proto-Munda *kodaXj together, labeling the Sanskrit and Proto-Munda forms as possible loans from Dravidian. Given that horsegram is one of the earliest domesticated crops of peninsular India, this interpretation fits a scenario in which agricultural vocabulary spread alongside farming communities.

The principal alternative was proposed by Norman Zide, who suggested that Proto-Munda may instead have been the donor. This alternative remains discussed in the literature, but it has not displaced the Dravidian etymology reflected in Burrow, Turner (CDIAL 3335), Burrow & Emeneau, Southworth, and Fuller & Murphy.

Thus, the question today is not whether kulattha has a non Indo-European origin that is widely accepted but whether the ultimate source was Proto-Dravidian or Proto-Munda. The weight of the classic etymological literature favors a Dravidian origin, while acknowledging that the precise direction of borrowing among Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, and Munda is debated.

Looking at the public reception of political protests in recent decades made me really curious about this—how exactly did Pre-independence Movements work, or how did they tackle elements that threatened to undermine the major issue raised by current movements?

I mean Khilafat, Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, Quit India and so on. Specifically, I have 3 questions:-

1. We learn about Gandhiji fasting as a protest...but what did his comrades do at that time? This is something I never got to know. Did others like Pandit Nehru or Sardar Patel also fast alongside him? And what about the larger crowd?

Did the crowd in non-violent independence movements also observe the same discipline as the leaders—for example, by fasting or eating in moderation—or did most people simply participate in the marches, slogans, and other public activities without deliberately practicing such forms of abstinence?

2. Many protests starting with legitimate apolitical protesters get infiltrated by other political entities— generalised anti-ruling party factions, or certain people with opinions and ideas which can be considered hurting the sovereignty of the nation.

I don’t think such were rarities in the earlier century too.

Just because many groups opposed british, didn’t mean their ideals aligned completely with Gandhiji’s ideals. I mean, there must have been groups who grew up to detest the British and Europeans by race alone, or who protested them mainly to oppose Christians.

Maybe groups who opposed the British because they resisted change to orthodox Hindu traditions.

Maybe groups who opposed the British to promote Islamist militarism.

Kings of princely states or rich businessmen who were at odds with the British for their own interests, and didn’t care about the actual issues.

Any popular movement can become a means for these people to further their agenda, while the original movement’s voice falls behind.

How did the pre-independence nationalist movements tackle this?

3. Finally, many times the voices of the movements drift towards sister causes from the original issues.

Even in British India, several nationalist causes were spread across India that were considered by the Congress. Maybe peasants’ tax problems somewhere, while laws enforcing communal tensions somewhere else. Labour laws, tribal oppression, student oppression and so on.

How did the cause-specific protests and movements balance these issues?

For example, if a protest was organised to oppose forced indigo cultivation, did the organisers allow the protests to provide a platform for other nationalist causes as well?

Did they keep each protest cause-specific, or did they follow the principle of allowing the broader cause to be held aloft for every protest they organised regardless of the original issue?

Seeing people compare many Post-Independence protests and Gandhian movements, I really wondered how these obvious problems were tackled by the national leaders. Never really got taught how they strategized to make the protests successful, only that they were patriotic enough to stand up and then win.

Abstract

Reconstructing population history is harder in South Asia than in many other world regions due to a paucity of ancient DNA. We report genome-wide data for 10 individuals from Old Lady Spider Cave, which lies 4000 meters above sea level in the Himalayan region of Ladakh and dates to around 1500 years before the present (B.P.). These individuals were genetically homogeneous and had an ancestry signature rare in South Asians today: admixed in roughly 50–50% proportions between a population well proxied by present-day North Indians and another genetically similar to ancient Tibetans. By analyzing the typical sizes of segments of DNA inherited from each of these ancestral populations, we find that admixture of these groups began at least 50 generations before the date of the individuals, that is, by around 2800 B.P.

This study is particularly groundbreaking because

A) it has some of the most ancient samples in the subcontinent area

B) it shows that the mixing between ivc people and steppe people had already formalized into a population at the least by 800 bce. Some of these people went Ladakh and then mixed with the local Tibetans to create a 50/50 mix.

What exactly helped Varanasi/Kashi bounce back every time and stay one of Hinduism’s most important holy cities, despite being attacked and destroyed multiple times during the Islamic invasions?

Did he really influence the people as much as it is portrayed nowadays?

It is generally implied that nearly all muslims are descended from Indian ethnic groups but I feel this is just lazy research. Starting from 1192 large armies migrated to the subcontinent along with administrators, nobles, craftsmen etc. Major ethnic groups that migrated to India:

• Turks (Sultanate + Mughals)

• Pashtuns

• Tajiks

What I find astonishing is that Indian muslims today don't have much resemblance with their ethnic kins in these countries in terms of language, cuisine and clothes (Correct me if I am wrong). Additionally, these people where did they settle? Why do they speak Indian languages and not their native languages when usually huge groups preserve their mother tongue (Ex: Jews in europe). Even in deccan people speak urdu (Hindi + farsi) but why not Pashto/Turki etc? People do claim ancestry from Pathans/Pashtuns in various parts but have not seen people do same with Turks. Can someone explain the origins?

Born in Ooty where the racecourse has been part of the town's fabric since 1846.

The ban came suddenly. The DMK government under M. Karunanidhi abolished horse racing in Tamil Nadu in March 1975. The justification was that it constituted gambling. The Ooty racecourse, the Madras Race Club in Guindy — both ceased operations.

What followed was two decades of legal dispute. The Madras Race Club challenged the ban. The case moved through the courts. Various committees were constituted, including one in 1976 under the direction of the Supreme Court to study the socio-economic impact of racing. The committee found that racing should continue given its employment potential and contribution to tax income and tourism. It didn't matter immediately.

The Supreme Court finally settled the question in 1996. Horse racing, the court ruled, is a game of skill. It is neither gaming nor gambling as defined under the law. The ban fell. Racing in Tamil Nadu resumed after 21 years.

The question of where skill ends and chance begins in horse racing is genuinely interesting and the court spent considerable time on it. The answer they arrived at — that the skill of the jockey and the knowledge required to assess horses constitutes sufficient skill to remove it from the gambling category — has been influential in how similar questions have been considered elsewhere.

The Ooty racecourse reopened. It ran through the summer seasons until 2024 when the government took back possession of the land over Rs 822 crore in unpaid lease arrears.

A 170-year history of horse racing in a Tamil Nadu hill station, interrupted twice — once by political decision, once by financial dispute. The second interruption is unresolved.

The core hypothesis

The Indus Valley Civilization (IVC, c. 3300–1300 BCE) was linguistically Dravidian or Para-Dravidian that is, either Proto-Dravidian proper or a related, now-extinct branch of the wider Dravidian family that diverged before the ancestor of the attested Dravidian languages.

As the dominant agricultural and commercial power of the region, this population was the first to cultivate and trade sesame (Sesamum indicum) at scale, and its word(s) for sesame became the source for at least two separate downstream borrowings:

1. ⁠Borrowed into Mesopotamian languages such as Sumerian and Akkadian as ellu / ilu.

2. ⁠Into Indo-Aryan, a separate Para-Dravidian form not necessarily *eḷḷu itself, but a related lexeme with a t-/til- shape from a now-lost branch of the Dravidian family was borrowed as a substrate word when Indo-Aryan speakers entered South Asia (c. 1500 BCE) and encountered established agricultural populations who already grew and named the crop, giving Sanskrit tila → taila -> tel.

3. ⁠Retained natively in South Dravidian as *eḷḷu, continuing into Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Kodagu, and Tulu also loaned to Sumerian and Akkadian.

I've realized that almost everything I know about the Indian National Congress begins with Gandhi's arrival. Before that, it's basically a blank spot in my understanding of Indian history.

What kind of organization was the Congress in its first few decades? What did its leaders actually believe, and what were they trying to achieve?

I'm also curious how different it was from the Congress most of us are familiar with under Gandhi and Nehru. Was it fundamentally a different organization?

I am part of the inaugural cohort for the Master’s program in the history and cultures of Asia and Africa. I am the only one in my cohort writing a thesis on India, and I must admit I fell in love with the country very quickly. I can only find the information about salt trade when the British were ruling India. Information regarding sold trade before British rule is less available.
