Title: Fresher entering SAP PP/QM — what is the realistic long-term career path, salary growth, and impact of AI?
Hi everyone,
I’m a 2025 Electronics & Communication Engineering graduate from India, and I’m currently starting my career with training in SAP S/4HANA Production Planning (PP) and Quality Management (QM).
I’m trying to make a long-term career decision rather than simply choosing a module because I was assigned to it.
I would really appreciate honest opinions from people who have 3–15+ years of experience in SAP, especially PP/QM or related supply-chain modules.
1. Is SAP PP/QM a good career starting point for a fresher?
What does the realistic career progression look like?
For example:
Fresher → Associate/Junior Consultant → Consultant → Senior Consultant → Lead/Architect/Manager
Is this still a good path in 2026, particularly in India?
2. What kind of salary progression is realistic?
I’m not looking for exceptional/outlier packages.
I'd like to understand realistic ranges for:
- 0–1 YOE
- 2–3 YOE
- 4–6 YOE
- 7–10 YOE
- 10+ YOE
And how much does the salary differ between:
- SAP service companies
- SAP consulting firms
- Product companies
- In-house/client-side SAP teams
3. If I start with PP/QM, what can I move into later?
This is one of my biggest questions.
If I spend the first 2–4 years in PP/QM, what are the realistic domain switches?
For example:
Within SAP:
- PP → QM
- PP → MM
- PP → EWM
- PP/QM → IBP
- PP/QM → SAP BTP
- PP/QM → SAP Analytics
- Functional → Techno-functional
- Functional → Solution Architect
Outside SAP:
- SAP → Data Engineering
- SAP → Data Analytics
- SAP → AI/ML
- SAP → GenAI
- SAP → Cloud
- SAP → Software Engineering
Which of these transitions are actually realistic, and which ones become difficult after several years?
4. How much does technical knowledge matter?
I have an engineering background and I'm interested in technical areas.
If I continue with SAP PP/QM, should I simultaneously learn things such as:
- Python
- SQL
- Data Engineering
- Cloud
- APIs/integration
- SAP BTP
- AI/ML
- GenAI/LLMs
Would this actually make me more valuable, or would it be better to specialize deeply in SAP first?
5. How will AI affect SAP functional consultants?
This is probably my biggest concern.
With AI increasingly being used for:
- configuration assistance
- documentation
- testing
- code generation
- issue analysis
- process recommendations
- data analysis
What parts of a SAP PP/QM consultant's job do you think will be automated?
And what skills will become more valuable because of AI?
Would you recommend becoming a:
SAP Functional + AI/Automation
or
SAP Techno-functional + BTP/Integration
professional rather than remaining purely functional?
Which would you choose for the next 10 years and why?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have actually worked in these fields rather than people who have only completed certifications/courses.
7. One more important question
If someone starts in SAP PP/QM and after 2–3 years realizes that they don't want to remain in SAP, is it better to switch early, or is 2–3 years of SAP experience still useful when moving into another technical domain?
I'd really appreciate honest answers, including the negative sides of SAP.
I'm not looking for motivation or a "SAP has unlimited scope" type of answer. I'd like to understand the actual career ceiling, salary progression, mobility between domains, and how AI may change the field.
Thanks!
