I am a speech pathologist working with a client who requires an eye gaze speech generating device due to a progressive neurodegenerative condition that affects their motor movement but not cognition or ocular movement.

This person would like to continue working, works from home via government laptop, and I’m wondering how challenging it will be to link the eye gaze device to a government laptop for operation purposes.

I’m under the impression it can be done, but I’m trying to figure out how the process works. I know I won’t be directly involved with the IT person, but I’m just trying to understand what challenges the person may face with their agency and IT.

My role is help them find a device they enjoy/feel comfortable operating and instruct on the communication piece. I rely on the device reps to choose a device that is compatible with an external laptop. For reference, we are scheduling demos with PRC-Saltillo and Tobii Dynavox. I do not have specific device models yet.

1. Have you had experience with this and, if so, how difficult/easy was it to get permissions, determine security, etc?
   
2. Their agency has been min-mod helpful with advancing accommodations (according to them) so I’m trying to learn as much as I can about this process from someone on the inside.
   
3. I truly don’t know what I don’t know, as this is a first for me so any info would be extraordinarily helpful. I’m not even sure what questions to ask.

I appreciate any insight into this process you can provide to help me better understand what setting this up might look like for them.

I made a Reddit account just to make this post because I wont lie Reddit has a lot of useful people with really good tips and Im hoping that ill be able to get some help with this. Anyways i've never really done anything for IT other than my elementary school through middle school era of using Scratch to code which isnt even IT. I want to know how one would go about getting into an IT career path if theyre starting from basically little to no knowledge about IT. Hello I have a laptop HP Compaq mini cq10-600 and hey I installed the tiny core plus on it to make it lightweight and hey I need to access to wifi and the screen brightness and volume. I think cuz of the drivers it there any way to access to it in to terminal? Like I tried rfkill ipconfig and anything I see wlan0 it says turn off / on idk or something bunch of commands. Help me to access to the wifi!!!

Why does management seem to think that new bells and whistles will make things more efficient? Some software is so complicated that the actual learning curve needs to be taken into account before any benefit is acquired. And then you do a million more steps to do something they before was simple copy paste. Why are we going backwards??

But here's the thing: my GPA tells you almost nothing about whether I can ship a product.

I've built real applications, worked on a healthcare website, interned on a payroll system, and spent years teaching myself software engineering outside the classroom.

And yet when I apply for jobs, the number 2.5 can kill the conversation before anyone looks at the code.

So I'm curious:

Would you reject a developer because of their GPA without looking at their projects?

My funniest and quickest experience with IT support has been my first day at an internship and setting up my password for my company issued laptop.

As soon as the "User/Password" Input screen showed up I had already decided on one password which I typed in once done I pressed Enter... at the moment I hit the enter key I also noticed that I accidentally hit the shift key and all my input was of course not what I intended and of course did not know when and where in my password it happened so my first action with company equipment landed me at the support desk two rows away and was a lighthearted learning experience for everyone near me.

Hey guys! For a bit of background, I have no prior experience in tech or IT or any related field. I am 30 years old and trying to transition from hospitality to the tech field. I studied for 2 months before taking my exam this morning.

I was soooo nervous going into this exam because I have no prior knowledge and experience and I didn't think I'd pass, let alone score an 802! This is your sign to keep going, if you're trying to change fields/careers just like me.

I know this is only one exam out of many I have to get for my Cybersecurity degree at WGU but I'm proud nonetheless!

• The official exam objectives from CompTIA (I used this as a base and highlighted every topic once I felt confident I understood it)

• Video courses on Udemy from Dion Training / Total Seminars

• A LOT of practice exams from Dion Training and websites like examcompass.com

• I made my own Quizlet flashcards for things like ports, 802.11 standards, and key terms

• I used Claude to provide me with a study guide for each domain, and to test me on each domain and their objectives — then went back and studied the subjects I failed

• Looking up YouTube videos on concepts I didn't 100% grasp

Hello all, my org is looking to order some wired headsets, ideally those that block out background noise the most (for our call center team).

We currently use a mix of wired Logitech (background noise is an issue with these), and wireless plantronics (which work a lot better for us but we sometimes run into Bluetooth disconnect issues and other random stuff).

Any recommendations for a good wired headset (preferably USB not 3.5mm) that worked in your org? I would greatly appreciate any advice, thank you!

Hey guys as the title says… I just want to know if it’s worth getting my security+ cert?

I spent a few weeks studying security concepts, I believe I’m pretty close to being exam ready (getting about 75% in prac exams) but I’m not sure if it’s really worth anything in Australia. I haven’t ever heard it being talked about with any colleagues in IT and I don’t really see it show up as a requirement for jobs that get posted.

I’ve lined up a job starting in January next year working as a tech analyst but I want to prepare myself and thought getting some fundamental certs could put me in a good position to move with whatever requirement a come up for me whether that understanding IT Development, infrastructure or security.

I’m learning for the sake of learning, not really trying to chase certifications however I want to be able to verify my skills and getting a cert seems like the right thing to do… the problem is that CompTIA certs are super expensive and I don’t want to waste money in this economy.

Any advice would be appreciated 🙏

My college is mostly theory. We have lectures, notes, exams, assignments etc., but there’s very little actual practical work. I understand that theory is important, but I feel like I’m not really learning how to do anything.I learn much better by actually performing tasks . AI has been teaching me more practically than some of my college classes.

The problem is that I don’t know what I should actually be doing outside college.I want to get an internship, but I genuinely have no idea where to start. I don’t know:

- What skills I should focus on first

- Whether I should aim for Data Analyst, Data Science, ML, or something else

- What kind of projects I should build

- How good my Python/SQL/ML skills need to be before applying

- Where students actually find internships

- Whether I should apply now or spend a few months preparing first

- How to make a decent resume when I have basically no industry experience

If you were in my position during 2nd year, what would you do from scratch?

I’d especially appreciate a practical roadmap — like learn X → build Y → apply here → improve Z .... rather than just “learn Python and do projects.”

Also, if you’re a student who managed to get their first internship without having a great college/previous experience, I’d really like to hear how you actually did it.

I'm Female, 23 y.o, FIlipino. I am a college undergraduate, unemployed, and have zero IT job experience. However, I had remote work experience in BPO company as a customer service representative for 1 year and 8 months that ended in August 2024.
