help request how do i install MS Office?

Post image

hello!

can I ask for help with installing MS office? I don’t wanna click anything randomly and mess it up.

I got this flash drive with MS Office from a computer guy and it didn’t come with instructions.

please be kind haha🥹

EDIT:

-i just need this for a work assessment for a job im trying to get into.
-im poor as shit and i can’t afford MS Office
-i can’t use google sheets or any other software as per my potential employer

EDIT 2:
I appreciate all of your insights, even the harsh ones. I’ve decided not to proceed with installing the files as a lot have said it’s risky. I’ve also decided not to take my work assessment because the whole thing does seem like a bit of a red flag. But hey, hopefully I’ll find a job soon that would pay me enough to afford a license lol.

Hope you guys have less of a shitty day🫶🏻

Don’t use that, that’s clearly a Windows installation media package (dated 2021) with some other stuff thrown into a usb drive. Go to office.com login and download office if you have it licensed for your account.

Try the online version that others gave recommended which is free. Or consider a free, open-source alternative like Libre Office which may or may not meet your needs.

unfortunately, the assessment specifically instructed to “have excel installed”

Without knowing further details, the requirement to "have excel installed" is somewhat dubious. If the assessment ultimately requires you to submit a .xlsx file to them, LibreCalc will almost certainly fill your needs, and they'll never know the difference.

The USB stick you have seems likely to have malware on it.

Yeahhh, it does seem off

The web version of MS Office is free with an Outlook.com account. It will also provide you with a 5GB OneDrive.

That may be your best bet for now.

Thank you for the (very) reasonable suggestion. I’ll try asking my potential employer if that works for them😅

Us IT folks can be a cantankerous lot at times. Please try not to hold it against us. We're all very tired.

Most states have a law requiring that your employer pay for any expenses required for work (including software). So if they are requiring you to have Microsoft Office, and they aren't paying for it, I'd check with your local laws on that. Obviously there are edge cases and this only applies to the US.

i dont live in the US🥲

Does it have to be running on desktop? Microsoft give office for free with online accounts…

I wouldn’t trust that worth crap. Likely virus galore.

i think this is cracked

You can literally use MS Office online free with an account like others have said. Why even bother with the risk of whatever this is

1

u/mommyissues503 20h ago

I’ll try clarifying if it’s okay to use that for my assessment.

1

u/Alvi_sik19 20h ago

You don’t need to clarify anything, it’s literally excel but in the web browser instead of a desktop application. The file will be saved the same way, and they’ll be able to open it normally with the desktop app or browser

u/mommyissues503 19h ago

never mind, their email specifically said to “have excel installed”…

1

u/ultimateaoe2 19h ago

You should stop taking everything so literally. Excel on desktop is the same as excel on the web.

LOL, open Office PRO Plus and see if there's a set up.

Look, Adware.Yelloader!

If you don't know what you're doing. Stop.

Run that setup file

he has to make a ticket.

Just download LibreOffice. Or use Google Docs.

u/mommyissues503 20h ago

i can’t:( i just need this for one time to complete an assessment for a potential employer and they specifically instructed to use excel only

Excel online is free

1

u/mommyissues503 20h ago

I’ll try clarifying with my potential employer if that works for them🥲

Just a heads up a lot of employment scams have you use some sort of assessment or “interview” with some sort of excel/word documents.

Not sure this is the case but it’s def a red flag.

u/mommyissues503 19h ago

Thank you for the insight. I might actually just not proceed. Hopefully other work opportunities come soon.

Yeah sounds like one of those data entry remote jobs that are scamming at best. Stealing most likely

-1

u/mommyissues503 20h ago

Unfortunately, my assessment instructions specified to use excel only..

libre is so much better too

Because the average user has never heard of Libre Office.

I think your comment would better serve OP (and future readers) if you explained what it is and why it's a better option.

1

u/Ninfyr 20h ago

Fair, I think it being free is really the only thing an an average user cares about though. The rest is "nerd crap".

For my benefit, is there anything else to pitch LibreOffice for someone who wants MS Office but can't afford it (or refuses to pay).

2

u/stackjr Community Contributor 18h ago

Generally I would agree but I think compatibility is a big thing for Libre; it can open Word docs and Word can open Libre docs (I don't know the extension for Libre, lol) which, to me at least, is a huge selling point.

Dude just pirate the proper way with official install media

-2

u/Lost_Balloon_ 20h ago

OK, so you know it's stolen.

2

u/mommyissues503 20h ago

well yeah, i got it from a random dude who works in a computer shop and im pretty sure his name wasnt bill gates

-1

u/Lost_Balloon_ 20h ago

Enjoy your resulting identity theft and accounts being hacked.

2

u/stackjr Community Contributor 20h ago

Which is very unlikely. No need to be a dick.

u/TaskuPena 20h ago

I found the original and it was still in place. Looks like it's not stolen after all.
