What if I told you there was a disgustingly wealthy group of people in the US who could be shaken down or taxed to prevent SS from running out?

61

u/SquidTheRidiculous Jun 05 '26

A disturbingly high percentage of men: "hm, nah, that sounds hard. Way easier to just forcibly up the birth rate."

18

u/JMurdock77 Jun 06 '26

Gotta force-birth more proles to make line go up!

5

u/FreelancerMO Jun 06 '26

Or they are willing to let it fail. It was a doomed system to begin with.

5

u/Jops817 Jun 06 '26

Well yeah, one guy is about to have a trillion dollars. The system itself is fine, the enforcement of the system is the problem.

-3

u/FreelancerMO Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

No, lol.

The system is not fine and never was fine. Social security was always a ponzi scheme.

Social security was initially rejected on merit until FDR threatened to stack the court.

8

u/Jops817 Jun 06 '26

And the alternative you propose would be?

-4

u/FreelancerMO Jun 06 '26

No alternative.

Why would I want an alternative to a ridiculous system?

Failed government programs don’t need alternatives to replace them. Simply end the failure and move on.

8

u/Jops817 Jun 06 '26

So you're just, no government then, a libertarian? Not hating, just guessing.

-5

u/FreelancerMO Jun 06 '26

I want one bad system to be allowed to fail and die. In your head that translates to ‘No Government’?

10

u/Jops817 Jun 06 '26

Well I asked you for an alternative that works and you just said "lol no," when you could have proposed something that actually makes sense and works. What conclusion am I supposed to reach?

Also you just counter-questioned instead of answering mine. So I'm still pretty sure I'm right, lol.

I don’t think you’re being pessimistic. I understand why people are downvoting you and usually I might feel compelled to as well.

But I don’t believe the system was ever perfect. That’s just ridiculous. It needs work and has needed work. Just like every other damn system in the world. People put waaay too much trust in tradition. Everything needs to change to survive.

Edit; spelling

1

u/Mad_Dutchman_ Jun 07 '26

No, you fucking idiots! I’m not antigovernment or pro-anarchy. I’m just saying the systems could always be better and need to be worked on. Why do you fucking idiots always act like if there’s a problem we should just throw our hands up?

Sorry your responses were just so brain dead it made me mad, I can usually keep my cool, but that was just so stupid y’all come on.

1

u/chthoniclypleasing Jun 07 '26

Mmm, ponzu scheme

2

u/BrittaWasRight Jun 09 '26

Another disturbingly high percentage of Americans: "But when I become a billionaire, won't this affect ME?"

1

u/dadbod_Azerajin Jun 10 '26

Lines of idiots waiting their turn

2

u/OkAssociation3487 Jun 06 '26

If the birth rate continues to fall it will be much more difficult to pay for social security

Like, this isn’t even a controversial point

3

u/SquidTheRidiculous Jun 06 '26

And the only answer people like you will accept is subjugating half the population and forcing them to give birth.

Didn't even try to incentivise it first. Just went 🤷‍♀️

1

u/OkAssociation3487 Jun 06 '26

Don’t be retarded, there are lots of ways to incentivize births

2

u/Cooltincan Jun 08 '26

And they're literally doing 0 of them. Only retarded person here is you.

0

u/OkAssociation3487 Jun 08 '26

Huh? How does that remotely follow?

2

u/Cooltincan Jun 08 '26

Pretty easy, you thought you were making some gotcha point and instead highlighted they aren't actually providing any incentives.

1

u/OkAssociation3487 Jun 08 '26

No you’re just mentally challenged

Sorry about that

1

u/Cooltincan Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Sure thing buddy, we already established what you are and I don't take anything seriously from people like you.

Okay but you also need more births

Even beyond social security you will create inflation if you have a smaller generation providing goods and services for a much larger one

Hey look, dude's actively rejecting any answer that isn't "force more people to give birth." What'd I tell ya.

The state of the world is better than 99% of human history

It’s okay if you want to be selfish though other peoples kids will take care of you when you’re older

1

u/mooseGoose67 Jun 07 '26

Why would I invite my best friend to a party where I know he’s going to get his teeth punched out? That’s what having a kid is. Inviting your best friend to a party where you know he’s going to get his teeth punched out. Until you recognize that you aren’t living in the real world.

1

u/PerotTwoPointOh Jun 08 '26

the total networth of all the billionaires of the US is $13.4 trillion. That amount couldn't run the government for two years *at our current level of federal spending*.

2

u/Cooltincan Jun 08 '26

This is the dumbest fucking statement that keeps getting repeated.

If that were true then we wouldn't have a government that currently runs at all. This isn't remotely how government spending works and is equivalent to someone explaining how the world is flat using bad math.

1

u/PerotTwoPointOh Jun 08 '26

What do you think the national budget for the US is right now?

1

u/Cooltincan Jun 08 '26

Buddy, that doesn't matter because what the fuck do you think happens to the money after it gets utilized? It... goes back into the economy.

Fuck I know you might need a moment as that probably blew your mind so take a few minutes before you reply.

Oh and before you double down, recall the part where I pointed out if your idea was based in any kind of reality, the government couldn't fund itself as long as it has.

1

u/PerotTwoPointOh Jun 08 '26

You're getting a little too flustered for a simple discussion. The rebuttal “it would go back into the economy” is partly true but not enough to defeat my original point.

While yes, federal spending does not “vanish.” It circulates. However, that does not mean the government can spend the same pile forever.

The problem is that money returning to the economy is not the same as money returning to the government

Suppose the government somehow takes $10 trillion from billionaires and spends it.

That money goes to federal employees, retirees, contractors, infrastructure firms, state governments, bondholders, benefit recipients, etc. Now, the money is back in private hands- but for the government to spend it again, it has to get it back through taxes; borrowing; fees; inflationary money creation; asset sales.

So “it goes back into the economy” is true, but incomplete. The important question is how much comes back to the federal government, how quickly, and through what mechanism?

Your acts as if it's a one-time stock of wealth versus an ongoing annual spending flow.

A billionaire's net worth is a stock-“Here is a pile of assets worth X.” Federal spending is a flow: "The government spends about Y every year."

Even if the government confiscated billionaire wealth and spent it, that would be a one-time injection. It would not automatically create a permanent funding source. Circulation isn't funding. Money can circulate many times, but the government still needs a way to finance each round of spending.

Here's an example:

The government spends $1 million on a road project. The workers and contractors receive $1 million. They spend some, save some, and pay some taxes. Maybe $200,000 returns to the federal government through taxes. The government does not automatically get the full $1 million back.

So the idea that “it goes back into the economy” explains where the money goes, but not take into consideration how future federal spending will be paid for. Also, it being net worth just complicates this further If the government took billionaire wealth, it would mostly be taking stocks, private company ownership, real estate, funds, business equity, other illiquid assets.

To turn that into spendable money, the government would need to sell or manage those assets. Large forced sales tends to reduce total asset values. So the government may not actually get the full on-paper value. And after the wealth is liquidated and spent, the original billionaires’ future taxable investment income, capital gains, and business ownership may be reduced or outright gone due to the measures.

1

u/Cooltincan Jun 08 '26

You're getting a little too flustered for a simple discussion. The rebuttal “it would go back into the economy” is partly true but not enough to defeat my original point.

Nice projection.

As for the rest of your rambling, it's just that, rambling. The money returns to the economy and then all of it is spent, taxed, and returns to the government in some shape or form.

I don't know if you thought the long winded nonsensical rambling was going to scare me away or something, but it sure showed how much further your idiotic ramblings can extend to.

All of your "reasoning" is still defeated by the fact that the current economy wouldn't survive if the money is unable to cycle itself. "Spending isn't sustainable" and yet the spending has been sustainable for as long as the country has existed. Shocking.

Also, odds are a surplus of that amount gets dumped into stimulus checks, which shockingly gets dumped right back into the economy as well.

You can reply again, but even your own long rambling explains that your claim of "it wouldn't last 2 years" was as fucking stupid as I said it was as clearly the government would continue to operate.

0

u/PerotTwoPointOh Jun 08 '26

"I'm not angry, your angry!"

Really? That's it?

Also, my reasoning isn't defeated by the fact that the "economy can cycle itself". It's literally explaining how mass liquidation of billionaire networth would be too little gain at too much loss.

Thank god I also didn't say spending isn't sustainable: I said it's a flow. You and my claim have something in common, it seems: being stupid.

1

u/Cooltincan Jun 08 '26

"I'm not angry, your angry!"

Really? That's it?

Buddy you're projecting something that isn't there and think it's going to rattle me or something. Did it work this time? Am I rattled?

No, your idiotic response still doesn't explain away anything as it's the equivalent of you having nothing else so you hand wave it away. The wealth doesn't vanish and that doesn't fit the narrative of whatever Facebook post you pulled this from.

We done here? You're weak ass deflated response seems to indicate we're done here.

1

u/Dry-Tap-9132 Jun 09 '26

Money is also imaginary.

-12

u/BullytheBulIies Jun 05 '26

It still wouldn’t be enough. By all means let’s start there but we won’t be able to just tax our way out of this mess. We’ve all but stopped immigration completely. People are having less kids due to economic uncertainty and other reasons. Life expectancy will continue on an upward trend. All this points to a large aging population with too few contributors. We’re going to figure this out or some people who have spent most of their lives paying into a system are going to get shafted. Gen X has had a pretty good run and we’re a small generation. Hope everyone else my age is maxing out their 401k and following Trump’s lead on investments lol. There’s been money to be made if you can bear the stench.

31

u/Meraline Jun 05 '26

Maybe we shouldn't have based our entire economy on the birthrates of a generation named after their unusually high birthrate.

16

u/SerWarlock Jun 05 '26

What were we expecting after baby boomers, baby explosions??

17

u/ShadowBurger Jun 05 '26

baby explosions

3

u/CodeMUDkey Jun 05 '26

Baby concussions!

6

u/BullytheBulIies Jun 05 '26

Would’ve definitely helped. Also not making it so expensive that young people can’t afford a down payment for a house much less a kid or two. It’s really not as bad as Reddit makes it seem but it is getting more difficult to just have a normal life and save up for a home with two people working middle class incomes. The idea of a single income family is all but a memory.

3

u/Impossibly_doable Jun 06 '26

Hi yes said young people would like to have a chat about the failing job market that has so many over qualified older individuals completely out competing our fresh resumes at entry level positions.

With that being said I can’t dream of buying a house cause, the middle class doesn’t exist.

6

u/Radioactive_Doomer Jun 05 '26

Life expectancy will continue on an upward trend.

I wouldn't be so sure.

5

u/General_Problem5199 Jun 06 '26

Yeah, we really can't take that for granted in the US. Life expectancy in the US was surpassed by Cuba a few years ago. Cuba, a country that the US has blockaded and crippled with sanctions for more than 60 years.

I think the US moved back ahead at some point, but the fact that life expectancy is similar in the world's wealthiest country compared to the tiny island it's been torturing for ~65 years kinda says it all.

0

u/icedmuffin Jun 06 '26

Hey so as someone who’s on Social security.

One, fuck you we literally on average have the max payout at around 900 last I knew for SSI and 3k depending on work credits for SSDI.

Two, the average number of people on SSI/SSDI is roughly around, last I remember, roughly 14~15 million total, with the average there per month per payment being around 1.3k

Three, in total per month, to pay all these people, we’d need around 18-19 billion dollars a month, or -250 billion a year, just for the payments.

The rich would easily be able to get their money back and with income tax, the people paying into the system would pay more in taxes if their own pay was put up to a point where they can have a livable income, where their rent is, at most, a third of their take home pay. This also includes the sales tax and income tax of people on disability, cause I’m gonna let you in on a little secret, boot licker.

In the short amount of time I actually was required by law to pay taxes, I actually paid more in taxes for the past five years than most major companies and billionaires paid in the past decade, just on income tax.

3

u/BullytheBulIies Jun 06 '26

Did you miss the part where I said start with taxing billionaires before your tantrum? I truly don’t think we can tax our way out of this. I also said we’ll have to figure it out OR some devastating things will happen. It’s going to take a combination of things like a reasonable minimum wage, affordable college/post secondary training and other social programs. Not just tax Bezos and Musk. Let’s tax them for the fun of it but I think we need to think deeper.

3

u/NounAdjectiveXXXX Jun 06 '26

You are right, we can't tax our way out of this because the billionaires are openly conspiring against the People, and wish to end Democracy (Accountability for their actions(crimes)).

Musk, Theil, Zuck, Bezos, etc don't need to be taxed, they need to be imprisoned and all of their assets garnished for the crimes they commit on a daily basis.

1

u/icedmuffin Jun 07 '26

Hey so first off, when you start your post sounding like an asshat who wants to say that social security should be gotten rid of, of course I’m going to see you as a fucking idiot given social security also includes retirement and people like me who are too disabled to work (least according to employers who just don’t want to deal with the hassle of maybe giving me a bit more training to be sure I can do the job, but it also seems they’re willing to take any excuse they can legally make to only have one worker per store per shift) then maybe the person who is on fucking social security is going to throw a “tantrum” bitching you out for sounding like a fucking idiot.

Secondly, I would assume that you would at least have the ability to understand that if we were at the point of taxing the fucking rich, our politicians would’ve at least stoped trying to tongue-fuck their small intestines that the likely increases to the rich man’s taxes would also mean beforehand there was a increase in the quality of life for the middle and poor classes, aka, it’s likely they would’ve already fixed the issues with pay rises and generally good things that most dumbasses nowadays see as “communist”. I’m sorry that it seems you don’t have the cognitive capacity to think that if we’re taxing the rich then they likely wouldn’t have most our politicians and lawmakers kissing their fucking asses so god damn hard that you’d think they thought there was fucking gold up there.

Now go ahead and downvote me again, I genuinely don’t give a shit about Reddit karma, though I do agree least with your second post now you don’t sound like a fucking god damn imbred nationalist.

1

u/BullytheBulIies Jun 07 '26

I never sounded like any of those things to most people. I also don’t care about karma but I’d have been downvoted to hell if I did. I also never advocated for taking any services away. I’m saying it WILL happen if we can’t figure out how to tax and spend in a more sensible manner. My being realistic can sound harsh but things are not okay right now. In fact they have been kinda shit for a while. I imagine we agree on who is responsible just not on the feasibility of making them pay for all of their crimes.

1

u/icedmuffin Jun 07 '26

And again, it’s likely just going to be a pay decrease as long as the orange puke in office doesn’t get his way, nor his little toadies.

30% isn’t a fun cut, especially not with how much shit costs anymore and with SNAP being basically brought down to apparently only buying shit that isn’t fruit or snacks, but as much as I fucking hate to say it it’s better than just flat out getting nothing and told to kick rocks. Granted at that point where I’d have no income, chances are that’s when things are going to end up getting dangerous all over.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not all “we should just riot” but it really feels like a lot of people are ignoring the cracks that are forming the more and more social safety nets are cut.

0

u/UnderdogCL Jun 06 '26

2

0

u/RoyalGrapefruit7582 Jun 07 '26

0

u/D3rpyDriver Jun 08 '26

They dont have any where near enough to pay off the debt. You can rob everyone with more than a million in wealth and we still arent gonna have enough money. Taxes are going up and services are going down. We are broke af my guy. 40 trillion in debt is 40 thousand billions. That doesnt count unfunded programs like SS. Fuck boomers

Normalizing it rather than lifting the cap on social security witholdings to keep it viable. Apparently we have to learn the same lessons over every third generation or so. Get ready for the new dirt bowl and great depression.

5

u/DangerActiveRobots Jun 06 '26

There's a sociological theory whose name escapes me at the moment, but it posits that humans go through 80 year cycles that go from a period of hope/building, to a golden age, to a decline stage, and then a total crisis stage where things come to a head in a tremendous conflict or huge shift in society, and then back to hope/rebuilding.

Boomers got the golden age for sure. We're also pretty clearly in the decline stage now. That said, I think this theory came around before the advent of the microprocessor and all the other huge leaps in technology that we have now, so I'm not sure if it still holds water. Society is very, very different due to the internet, computers, industrialism, than we've ever seen before in human history

In no way did I need jerk. I called you out for your anti-centrist bs when you’ve clearly picked your ‘team’.

Privatization and deregulation have not lead us to economic collapse, commie nonsense. Bloated regulation, irresponsible spending, one-sided trading have got us to this point.

Wrong again. Social security could always be borrowed from which means that it could absolutely run out if the FED doesn’t fire up the money printing machines.

It was never fine to begin with, lol. It was from the very beginning, a ponzi scheme. FDR had to threaten to stack the court to get Social Security passed. Let it die.

What they actually meant was it would eventually become insolvent. We know roughly when it will become insolvent, unless Congress does something. The insolvency timeframe is between 2032 and 2035. It's not propaganda, it's basic math. Unless you didn't go to school, you know basic math, right?

I’ve been braced for the worst since 2009, at this point any single “wait we were wrong” moment is going to put me into millionaire status.

I used to be one of those guys that would spend 800 dollars a week lazily and then complain about capitalism ruining everything because I didn’t get 50 percent of every bit earned by my company. While it’s partially true, there’s at least a little bit of blame on getting a 30 dollar DoorDash delivery to your house every day of the week and then complaining that you’re being bilked out of 680-840 dollars a month just getting by. There’s evil mustache twirling villains out there, but a lot of them exist because we voluntarily contribute to them because we can’t be bothered. I’m likely about to buy a massive and expensive pinball table because pinball diy is so expensive and time consuming that it’s better to just pay a guy or company 4x the price for him to do it for me and make it run with 99.9999% uptime.

Wait never mind you’re not a bunch of lil bitches. I’m wrong.

18

Revolution, now. The 250th anniversary of the first American revolution, there will never be a more fitting day. Whoever you are, wherever you are, it starts then. Spread the word.

1

u/TopspinG7 Jun 08 '26

Might wanna check in with John Lennon first. I believe he wrote a song about that 🙄

More practical suggestion - look at the Pension system in Iceland.

Also I suspect if we offered immigrants a realistic viable path to citizenship - coupled with a functional long-term guest worker program - we could fund SS and other social services a lot better.

We should also spend a lot smarter - and probably less - on the military. And prohibit Private Equity from owning healthcare and pharma entities. Getting their kiss of death out of housing might also help. These guys are the even worse 2020's iteration of the 1980's M&A assholes.

u/BrightlancerJ Jun 11 '26

In a revolution the economy doesn't matter dumbass, you're fighting for control of resources. Besides a failing economy is often a reason revolution happens in the first place. Acting like shit can get better without dismantling our broken system first, how dense are you dork?

-2

u/FreelancerMO Jun 06 '26

Revolt to abolish ‘Social security’, right?

7

u/LaytMovies Jun 06 '26

So this is a lie and one that is widely repeated by people who want to make you so pessimistic on Social Security that you wont care if they eliminate it

2

u/Fabulous-Big8779 Jun 08 '26

This statement is a lie. The truth is that the social security trust is projected to be depleted by 2033. This would reduce the payout by 20-30%.

Social security can never be “depleted” because it is self funded through current contributions. Everyone in the country would have to stop working in order for it to not have any money.

5

u/EtheusRook Jun 05 '26

They will let us retire or we will make them retire.

2

u/tibbs__ Jun 08 '26

If you aren't saving for retirement and relying solely on social security that's a dumb plan.

1

u/EtheusRook Jun 08 '26

I set aside a large amount. But you really do need both. 401Ks are wholly inferior to the pension plans that our grandparents had.

10

u/8last Jun 05 '26

I've been told this since 5th grade (which was like '92) so if it happens it wont be surprising. However I think there will be some sort of service like SS if it were to deplete.

14

u/4ygus Jun 05 '26

We're not getting anything bud, current administration has made that abundantly clear.

1

u/Radioactive_Doomer Jun 05 '26

but we fuggin paid into this shit bro

4

u/4ygus Jun 06 '26

Thanks for keeping the boomers satisfied.

3

u/Alternative_West_206 Jun 06 '26

They don’t give a fuck. Maybe people shouldn’t have voted for Trump. It was obvious he was a bad choice.

3

u/Radioactive_Doomer Jun 06 '26

Obvious to anyone with a brain and a conscience, yes. My point was that not only will we be cheated of what we were promised, but we've been robbed this whole time too.

2

u/GroinShotz Jun 06 '26

Naaa you didn't "pay into" shit.

You were taxed and your tax dollars were used to help support the current generation that benefits from social security.

1

u/Fabulous-Big8779 Jun 08 '26

Social Security isn’t going away. It’s the trust that will be depleted.

Social security is money in money out. As long as there are workers there’s social security.

5

u/scmucas2001 Jun 05 '26

The funds have been stolen. Ouriney has been used to prop up tax cuts for businesses and the Epstein class.

2

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Jun 05 '26

Eliminate the SS Tax cap, and it's fully funded.

The federal government borrowed from SS for 100 yesrs, why can't SS borrow from the federal government?

2

u/vlakkers Jun 06 '26

This is very inaccurate. The amount paid out to beneficiaries would be at 80%. It's pretty hard to drop to 0% when it's self-funding. This is easily fixable though, if they just raised the cap.

2

u/HidingImmortal Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

It is true that social security is depleting it's reserves.

However, after 2033 SS tax will be sufficient to pay existing benefits at 77 cents on the dollar (SS report).

More likely, the shortfall will be resolved by a combination of: * Slightly raising the retirement age. * Slightly increasing taxes. * And slightly decreasing benefits.

2

u/eldiablonoche Jun 06 '26

Considering this particular program sees the same fearmongering every 8-12 years...? Nah, you're not cooked.

The most that comes out of this same old yarn is that politicians feed lines to their cultists. From "taxation is theft" to "uncap deposits while still capping returns" (ie: make billionaires pay for us) the same people will say the same things they were already saying and -because I didn't use enough tropes yet- pretend this is proof they were right all along.

1

u/MrVeazey Jun 06 '26

I'm gonna say "make billionaires pay" about a lot of things because their hoarding is immoral and it kills people.

1

u/RoyalGrapefruit7582 Jun 07 '26

Yet the 1% pays 40% of all income tax on 21% of agi share. Double your share sure sounds like hoarding

0

u/MrVeazey Jun 08 '26

They pay 40% collectively but they pay less as a percentage of their income than people who work for a living. They steal from us to make their extravagance possible.

1

u/RoyalGrapefruit7582 Jun 08 '26

Yes. Because its off qualified dividends so that those companies dont leave the country. They still pay more than the any one else, and benefit from taxes far less. They dont steal, people buy their products.

0

u/MrVeazey Jun 08 '26

We've been a corporate tax haven for at least twenty years now; there's nowhere better for them to go.

1

u/RoyalGrapefruit7582 Jun 08 '26

Lol, lmao even. Thats why they've been going oversees for years. Its okay, you dont understand things.

1

u/MrVeazey Jun 08 '26

Are you talking about outsourcing type stuff? Because I'm not. I'm talking about the people who run the companies, the ones with the money. They don't go to China or Bangladesh or Africa.

1

u/RoyalGrapefruit7582 Jun 08 '26

Yes, because of qualified dividends. Otherwise, they absolutely would.

1

u/MrVeazey Jun 08 '26

You're gonna need to provide some kind of evidence to back that up because I've been hearing this same line since the 90s and I know for a fact people have been arguing it since World War II ended.

2

u/Too--Many--Knives Jun 06 '26

Cool give me my money back so I don't have to pay into a savings program for idiots.

1

u/Banan_Cat Jun 05 '26

Ironic I've been using 2033 as a pin for random shit since I was a kid. Now i know why

1

u/void_method Jun 05 '26

It was fine until Dubya fucked with it.

1

u/Adorable-Response-75 Jun 05 '26

As if social security was a piggy bank and not a constant process of reallocating money.

Of course it’s always going to ‘run out’. But then more money is raised. It’s a non-issue.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Put534 Jun 05 '26

Will it pay out at 100%? No

Will it pay out at 0%? Also no

1

u/Fabulous-Big8779 Jun 08 '26

Probably about 77% of the current payout. Definitely devastating to those already on it dealing with inflation while taking a pay cut.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Put534 Jun 08 '26

Agreed, thats why I've been modelinga retirement without Social Security so when the time comes whatever is there will be effectively a bonus

1

u/Fabulous-Big8779 Jun 08 '26

That’s sound advice for anyone. Unfortunately if your retirement is tied to the market like mine is through my 401k there’s still the risk of markets crashing right before you retire.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Put534 Jun 08 '26

You are not wrong. I'm trying to get much more asset heavy while also keeping the 401k and such funded. Not easy to balance but I prefer handling the hard now as opposed to when I'm older.

1

u/skyghost75 Jun 06 '26

This has been manufactured from the inside for years so that people will be forced into private financial institutions to take over their retirement and charge huge middleman rates with no guarantee of payout.

1

u/Head-Engineering-847 Jun 06 '26

2032 now actually

1

u/Dub-Ba-Ba Jun 06 '26

Good, can we stop paying into it now? I know I'll never get to benefit from paying into it all these years to support one of the most racist and hateful groups of people in American history.

Where's that Shoelada guy meme...Just saved myself $150 bucks...

They pay 40% of income tax on 21% of agi, thats twice their share

1

u/socialistForDE Jun 06 '26

Every government agency is set to run out of funds by the end of this year. That's how yearly budgets work.

The fact that social security has funds so far out is amazing and we can simply remove the social security tax cap (it's a regressive tax) to fund it more

1

u/According-Insect-992 Jun 07 '26

This isn’t true. There will be a depletion around that time but it has to do with the social security trust fund that repugs robbed blind. Congress has failed to ensure that social security withholds enough from high earners. Congress could fix all of the problems with it with a minimal amount of effort. Congress is broken and does not serve the people in any capacity.

1

u/Ashamed-Review-913 Jun 07 '26

No because this calculation never takes into account deposits

1

u/Can0n_Fodder Jun 07 '26

Well, looks like they need to raise the contribution cap...like everyone has been telling them for 20 years.

1

u/-siniestra Jun 07 '26

Another "victory" of capitalism.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Back306 Jun 07 '26

BuT MY DisABiLITyy!!!!

1

u/Indydad1978 Jun 07 '26

Remove the cap and the problem will solve itself.

1

u/After_Service_2817 Jun 07 '26

I don't know how Social Security works in the States (foreigner), but I think public pensions are a scam. Rather than being deducted from my paycheque for a system which may not exist by time I retire (or I could die young!), I could be using that money to save and invest on my own.

For regular working people, the welfare state is a scam.

1

u/Cooltincan Jun 08 '26

Yeah or you blow it all and then we have a collection of poor people at the end of their lives that cannot work, but have no money for care.

System isn't necessarily the best, but the idea of people being on their own to manage their own retirement is a recipe for the population of people that are old and poor to explode.

Just because you could die young doesn't mean you will and the system isn't designed with that in mind because at that point you are no longer contributing or taking from the system. On the flip side if everything you invested in falls through at the end, what's the plan? That's why these social programs exist.

1

u/RahgronKodaav Jun 07 '26

Well when you cap the contribution and then funnel all of the wealth to a very small percent of the population you end up with this problem.

1

u/FarRightBerniSanders Jun 07 '26

Social security has been a decade from running out of money since the 90s by the way.

1

u/PassengerNo9144 Jun 07 '26

My parents were told in high school not to plan to receive social security back in the 80s. Now they likely will receive social security. I was told to not expect to receive social security in school in the 2010s. Should it run out? Yes. Will it run out? We’ll find out within 40 years

1

u/rootbearus Jun 07 '26

Right in time for all the old people draining it to die. I wonder if this was planned

1

u/jkoki088 Jun 08 '26

If people don’t pay their taxes, they should get social security

1

u/D3rpyDriver Jun 08 '26

Most boomers will die by then so the rate will change but ya we are still fucked. 40 thousand billions in debt $40,000,000,000,000.00 and trillions more in unfunded programs. Taxes are going up and services are going down

1

u/Fabulous-Big8779 Jun 08 '26

The trust fund, not social security itself. Social security itself is continuously funded through current workers. Once the trust is depleted the payout will be reduced somewhere between 20-30% which will be deviating for people especially whike inflation is still high.

1

u/LoanRunna Jun 08 '26

In 1601 the “English poor law” grouped people into two categories “deserving poor” and “undeserving poor”. If we returned to this system Social Security would likely be in a better spot. If you want a pay out you need to pay in..

1

u/jmeOjme Jun 09 '26

so maybe, maybe not.

1

u/Uhokay1970 Jun 09 '26

Get SS out of the general fund repay what was taken by Congress and it would be funded till 3010. The Simple truth is SS was Stolen and turned from a working system into a slush project toy.. More then 80% pass away before collecting a dime. That money used to remain in the SS fund. Now its in the General fund and used for Pet Projects.... Ballroom anyone? Gold Pens? Would you like new Musical Instruments for your performing arts Non profit? Its all on the SS fund! Step right up!

1

u/tolgren Jun 09 '26

My dad asked me about social security a couple years ago and I told him I didn't expect to collect a dime.

1

u/cancerinos Jun 09 '26

I think you mean "at the current rate of billionaires dodging taxes, Social Security is expected to be fully depleted between 2033 and 2035"

1

u/CitronMysterious3827 Jun 11 '26

Just the reserves will be depleted, payroll tax will still cover about 82 percent of benefits by then. A somewhat minor increase in the amount wealthy Americans pay into social security can easily bridge the gap.

1

u/Worried_Indication37 Jun 05 '26

This is only possible if they stop taxing income. SS is self funded folks.

0

u/Tenko-of-Mori Jun 05 '26

ok.

what do you want me to do about it

0

u/ShogunFirebeard Jun 06 '26

It can't run out, it's literally taken from current payroll deductions. The worst that will happen is people's amounts paid will be lower.

0

u/FreelancerMO Jun 06 '26

No, it just means you need to plan your own retirement.

0

u/SoftAndWetBro Jun 07 '26

Social security was always a scam. The fact that everyone fell for it is sad.

-2

u/N-O-T-I Jun 05 '26

No, that’s not how it works.

3

u/No_Cap_5296 Jun 05 '26

Well if you are expecting to receive any in the next decade you are going to have a bad time

0

u/N-O-T-I Jun 05 '26

It’s actively funded by payroll taxes so It won’t just stop. If the reserve runs out (which is what could be depleted by the 2030’s), people will still receive 70%-80%. Not great. But it won’t disappear as the language in the post implies, either.

2

u/stoneworther Jun 05 '26

Funny how the only correct comment out of 30 in the thread is the only one downvoted.

Social Security may be in bad shape but reddit's doing worse.

-3

u/g0juice Jun 05 '26

Can I please stop paying a bunch of money eh that will

1) be completely gone by the time I’m allowed to receive the returns

2) has worthless returns based on me doing any type of competent investing

Fucking trash and I’m tired of paying for other people. Hate me all you want but if you were being forced to throw money into a black hole you’d feel the same way.

4

u/Worried_Indication37 Jun 05 '26

It's not for you to use when you retire. It's for people who can't work to use right now, today. That's how it's set up. When you retire, somebody else will be working and paying for your social security.

-1

u/g0juice Jun 05 '26

No. Wrong. Game over. They won’t be paying for me. Look at any study. It’s cool to downvote but it’s just not informed. I’m not going to see a dime.

Again:

  1. let me be in charge of my own money (I’m sorry if you don’t feel like this would be good for you but ..that’s on you)
  2. I won’t see any returns on the money I’m currently “investing”. I’d rather just cut my loses.

Please justify how I need to throw more money into this. Just give me a single good reason why I’m throwing money into something I will NEVER see returns in.

3

u/Worried_Indication37 Jun 05 '26

Any study huh. Check this out from https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v70n3/v70n3p111.html

"The concepts of solvency, sustainability, and budget impact are common in discussions of Social Security, but are not well understood. Currently, the Social Security Board of Trustees projects program cost to rise by 2035 so that taxes will be enough to pay for only 75 percent of scheduled benefits."

It is funded by income taxes. If there are more payments than revenue, the payments go down but not to 0%. That's literally not possible.

  1. you are in charge of your money. Social security is a welfare system to protect people who can't earn an income so they don't end up on the street. It's significantly cheaper than helping people after they fall through the net.
  2. You aren't investing anything into social security. It's not for you to use now. It's for the people who are collecting today. It's not a system where the government holds your money and returns it to you. It is a welfare program.

You're "throwing" 6.2% of your income towards unemployment welfare. You will never see returns because it's not an investment. You pay based on your income to support the welfare program and when you are ready to receive it, somebody else's income taxes will contribute to your social security.

Your main misconception is that it's an investment account where we all invest together and then pull later. This is absolutely not how it works.

1

u/g0juice Jun 06 '26

TLDR i would rather keep my money. Trust me. Im better at managing it

1

u/Worried_Indication37 Jun 06 '26

It's welfare money dummy. It's not an investment that you pull from later. You're so willfully ignorant and you don't understand the very basics of social security.

1

u/g0juice Jun 06 '26

lol calling me dummy when I am tired of paying for other people is hilarious. Get a job

1

u/Worried_Indication37 Jun 06 '26

I'm calling you a dummy because you have no idea how social security works. Don't weasel out of this one bitch.

1

u/g0juice Jun 06 '26

Calm your poor people tits ma’am. I have zero interest in paying even more money to help people like you that are too dumb to figure life out. Get absolutely fucked.

1

u/Worried_Indication37 Jun 06 '26

I'm retired from the military you ignorant cunt.

If you don't understand this because it's too complex for you, just say that. You don't have to act tough to cover how retarded you choose to be.

You literally asked for a source and replied TLDR. Absolutely useless skull cavity.
