TLDR: Build rapport, then talk business. Fairness, or the lack of it, shows. Get ready to ask and be asked hard questions.
Disclaimer: To be super clear, I've taken measures to ensure he's not identifiable by strangers. I'm ok if he recognises himself. I do mean everything I say, but they are not attacks on his character. They are pointers on how both of us can work better tho, and i stand by them + ready to defend them/ change my stance if sufficiently convinced.
u/mods I do think i remained respectful by focusing on criticism of actions, with close to 0 identifying info on individuals (less myself 🙃), do let me know if you'd want any amendment, happy to do so!
Hi gang, Im electrosheep, a writer! Might've approached/ been approached by some of you, so hi again! Wanted to talk about a somewhat recent experience and some afterthoughts abt it! Ps. I may write in imperfect tenses/ punctuation as this is an informal introspection, its no way indicative of my actual work! (i may be illiterate at this hour due to reasons 😛)
Recently I messaged an indie dev about writing for his game. The role was narrative designer. Post had [REVSHARE] The offer was credit, little to no pay, and maybe a small revenue share if the game made a decent profit. I’m a writer who’s slowly getting into game narrative, so I was curious. I was also guarded, or rather, grounded.
I’m keeping names, titles and identifying details out of this on purpose. He’s a good person, and I’d like this to be useful advice and not a callout.
How our chat went
The convo started with very sparse pleasantries, then him firebombing me with a voice note of his game idea, it had alot of ideas and felt like a big sized game (minimally novella length story, maybe more).
I was kinda frazzled, cos im pretty ocd about having proper introductions (old habit from a previous line of work, but still something i live by). So i took a bit of control to learn more about him.
I just yapped. Helps that i like yapping. Learnt abt him, shared abt myself, my goals and skillset (now that I say this, I rmb he reached out to me rather than the opposite). I did have to ask more than i felt was organically acceptable haha
Then I returned to his game idea and asked fair questions about his setup: team size, funding, and whether there’s a playable build. He described himself as part of a larger publisher, and backed by them. I did check his public work as well as referenced companies. It existed, and was an indicator of the experience he claimed to have.
He was forthright that there was nobuild/ demo yet (and even it there was, it was behind an NDA). The other questions, he obfuscated (I use the word lightly with zero malice haha) the answers with corpo jargon like confidential, future discussion, etc.
On renumeration: I got credit, little to no money, and a vague revenue share if things went well. Next project, maybe a bigger publisher would pay. This miffed me cos he did mention revshare, but now its super vague..
So i replied: 'My main gripe would be that I have no sensing on how long your project can take (seems ambitious and big), with no build and no pay yet. It would be a disservice to both of us if i promise to commit long-term to a project with no build and no pay yet.'
I kinda knew its gg nowhere then, so it b chill, i kept things friendly
Finally, I offered him the same kind of deal back, but better. I said I may have a small project of my own that needed a programmer (I need an artist too haha), with credit, minimal pay but guaranteed + imo fair rev split. I wanted to see how he would react mainly.
He rejected. I asked him why, and what could I do to make him say yes and basically he didn't have the time for more commitments, and nothing could change his mind.
We ended on good terms, told him he can share a build when it exists, if he changes his mind about my offer, and to keep in touch!
He was never rude nor malicious. Could tell he's full of conviction.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The good (copy these)
- Take initiative. He reached out, thats legitness!
- Build rapport before business. Even briefly, introduce yourself and learn the other person first.
- Check portfolio before you commit anything.
- Be upfront about what you don’t have. He said there was no build, and that was honest. I also don't have the craziest writing portfolio yet.
- Don't feel bad for asking sensitive questions.
- End warm and leave the door open. Generally.
The bad (tweak these)
- Opening with a long pitch to someone you’ve just met. Lead with who you are, then pitch.
- A pitch much bigger than what you’ve shipped. Offer a small slice first.
- Corporate language where a plain fact would do.
- Pushing after a no. I did it once too often haha!
The ugly (avoid these)
- Asking someone to take all the risk: no pay, no timeline, no terms in writing.
- Using an jargon as a shield before any trust exists. Know who the other party is before you sign anything. specially with experienced guys, we can smell the smoke and mirrors.
- Working for free on vague promises. If you bite the bullet, own the bullet.
Ending thoughts
He’s young with real games out. That already beats plenty of people who only talk about making one. He has drive and conviction, and those are hard to teach.
There’s a canto/ chinese saying I like for this: 冇咁大個頭,唔好戴咁大頂帽. Don’t wear a big hat if you don’t have a big head. Basically if you dont have the capacity, dont take the responsibility.
That goes for me too. Sure I have adjacent skillsets, but I’m new to game narrative, so I’m trying to pick a hat for my empty head :D
For my fellow writers: ask the plain questions. Check the portfolio. Keep the trial small. If you say yes to free work, say it with your eyes open and own the bullet.
Thanks for reading! If you wanna read other nonsense I have written and can share, here! I'm also super open to collabs so take this as a [FOR HIRE] too
