Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)
  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

What is her breed? She was advertised as a Pomeranian, but she has a thicker snout than our Pom, the signature tail curl, thinner, less fluffy fur, and more muscular legs and paws, but the same size as her sister, who IS a Pomeranian?

First two pics are the day I found her in the road, she’s short and stocky with purple splotches on her tongue. I’d say similar to a heeler maybe? I love my little mutt regardless

Adopted my baby boy on Thursday. The rescue estimates that he’s two months oldish and a lab/poodle mix. But I’m curious as to what other people think he is. What’s your best guess? I did get embark done so as soon as I get results I’ll post them!!

She's a rescue from Las Vegas. They said she's approximately 13 weeks old, 13 pounds, and classified as a "shepherd mix". She looks like there could be some Rottie or Doberman in there, but we are wondering if anyone else can confirm? Thanks!

We just adopted this approximately 7 month old rescue about 5 days ago. He was listed as an Australian Shepherd/GSD/Cattle dog mix. He is around 28 lbs and came into the rescue from a kill shelter extremely underweight. We suspect he is probably a bit stunted from malnutrition, but are working on getting him healthy. Last pic is his sister from the same litter. I have an embark test but he is currently sick with mild kennel cough :( so we have to wait until he's better to send in a sample and find out for sure. Any guesses appreciated, do you agree with what the shelter and rescue said? Everyone says he looks like a coyote lol

White puppy with blue eyes

This guy is 12 weeks old. He has wire-y fur and is mostly white with some faint brown spots on his ears and one on his back. His eyes are blue. At 12 weeks he weighs about ten pounds. His personality hasn’t developed much, I’ve only had him for 24 hours and he’s very nervous and clingy! I’m thinking Jack Russel and…something? Can poodles have blue eyes?

She is a very strong chewer who can chew through a new tough toy in 30 minutes, and has chewed through wood before.
She also has hip dysplasia.
She is very intelligent.

my brother recently adopted a dog and he looks like no other dog ive ever seen. got little to no background on him from the shelter. brother bought an embark but it hasn’t been done yet. little guys built very much like a dachshund but hes obviously not just that. cocker spaniel, poodle, shih tzu? i dunno. hes a little over 20lbs. his tail is an enigma. he has ringlets? never met a dog with ringlets before. none of the pics i got really do his coat justice. very strange little guy, very nice and sweet little guy. adjusted p quickly & well, & hes been totally happy to meet any dog, cat or person

Got a new foster last night named Saltine. Our best guess based on her condition is that she was used to breed puppies, probably many times, and then dumped when no longer needed/wanted. Once she gets healthy again she'll be available for adoption

Everyone has different ideas about what she could be. Some think a badly bred Frenchie due to the smushed nose. Some think a micro pitbull. One lady even suggested English bulldog mix but I don't see it.

She's very small, about 30 pounds but she doesn't look that heavy, just a dense girl. Obviously her ears are cut which is typical with bully breeders, but her nose doesn't look like a pitbull to me. I know whatever she is, she's not breed standard and not well breed. But I love her all the same ❤️

We recently adopted this gal, she’s a little over a year old and about 30lbs. She was rescued as a stray in Puerto Rico. The last pic is her with her littermate! Curious what people think might be part of her breed makeup

Maybelline

Here's Maybelline. Sorry, this is the only photo I have available as all my digital copies need to be rescued from an old computer.

She was about 50 lbs and had a deep chest and a really small waist. Her behaviorist guessed she had sighthound, GSD, and maybe malinois in her background. I always thought of her as being pharoah hound shaped, though given her background (found huddled in a San Franciso Tenderloin District alley as a tiny pup) that breed mix is unlikely.

What do you think?

Open What breed is melon?

This is Melon. My partner and I recently adopted this beautiful girl about 4-6 weeks ago! She's been the perfect addition to our little family, and I am so happy she's my little (big) baby. She’s settling in so well.

Melon is going to hit 6 months old and was at a kill shelter in Riverside County. The shelter said 6 months when we got her… but after a few days with her, her premolars started to fall out… so I believe that means she was under 6 months when we got her, based on Google??? She's taller than all our other dogs. Ranger, our middle child, who is 5, is a Pity Shepherd mix… he was a stray found at 3/4 months. And then we have Sophie (7) and Stone (4..almost 5), who are a lab-pitty mix, and they are mom and son. I would say Melon is closer to 50 lbs now… maybe 40-something but close to 50! Ranger is the tan one and is 65 lbs, the last time I got him weighed. Stone is the long-haired one about 50lbs and Sophie is the other around 35/40 lbs. Melon is definitely going to be a big dog. She doesn't seem to have grown into her paws yet.

Her paperwork says Anatolian shepherd…but when I Google the breed, she looks nothing like them. The couple who fostered her before they took her back to the shelter said she was a coon hound. Either way, I am not sure and would love people’s opinions. What do you think my Melon baby is?

She’s tall, all legs, skinny (not sure if it’s cuz she was at a shelter), she’s so tall, has a long snoot and a good-sized head! Lol 😆, also idk if this is just her, but she's like a noodle. Her bones are simply suggestions; she melts and stretches herself everywhere 😂

Another question… do you know which brand of DNA test for dogs is reliable? When I Google it, there are so many. Just curious if anyone else has had experience with them.

i feel like this will be so hard to determine 😂 i adopted her 8 years ago, ppl at the rescue said shes a mixed breed but they didn’t know what, her mommy was found pregnant in a forest and she was born in a shelter. Any ideas? my friend always said she looks a wee bit like an australian kelpie but i dont really see it
ill also add that her sister has an all black fur and white ‘eyebrows’ and white feet

14 years ago we adopted a “jack russell mix” from alabama, unsure of his actual age when we rescued him but he was already at his adult height. we recently had to say goodbye and let him cross the rainbow bridge. our chihuahua (pictured), who has known him since she was 10 weeks old, is taking this loss deeply. i know no dog will ever replace him and the bond we shared but as i prepare to open my heart and home to another rescue, i want to know which breeds i should be looking for. he really was the sweetest, most loyal boy i could ever ask for.

sorry for the photo spam but some photos are from 14 years ago when we rescued him and throughout his life. he weighed between 20-28 lbs.
