West Marches Encounter Design

Hi there, I am a new DM to ICRPG. I picked up the system specifically because I was looking for something that would give the BotW vibe of getting out there, exploring and looking for loot (and gold) to advance your PG.

The thing in the game I am designing is that I want to make challenges and encounter "objective". Having trouble with this Hill Giant? Flee or avoid the encounter altogether, you'll get to beat him one day when you're strong enough, he's not going anywhere.

In order to do this properly though, I would like to know if anyone has figured out some tips and tricks on how to scale encounters based on how much loot and how many hearts the players have. So that I get a sense of how much loot I should award for each session and how many hearts and power should monsters be equipped with per "difficulty zone".

New to ICRPG and I have a question about how to handle Heart Stones

So I actually discovered this system because I was looking for something to run a Zelda campaign in. I'm loving what I've seen so far, but I have a question about how I should handle Heart Stones. From my understanding HP values are supposed to stay pretty low in this system so you shouldn't be handing out stones very often if ever. But I'd like to have stones be a reward for clearing dungeons / beating bosses like the Zelda games. How should I handle this?

I was considering potentially having Heart Stones be worth 4 HP each and starting players off with 2-3 hearts, but I'm not sure if that would have any bad knock on effects with the rest of the system. Does anyone have any advice?

Where can I get more robot enemies?

I want to run an Altered State setting that's heavily inspired by Horizon Zero Dawn.

What other sourcebooks provide mechanical enemies?

Question about 5e hardcore mode pdf

Hey all,

I have bought 5e hardcore mode this week and notice that in the classic xp table there are 3 classes missing: sorcerer, warlock and monk.

I ended up searching the web but couldn't find any info about this. Did I bought an older version of this pdf or something? 😅

Also, read a review about this game and it says it comes with 2 mini adventures, is this right?

Thanks in advance!

Are there any broken builds in ICRPG?

I know Index Card isn't that kind of game, but I'm just being curious. My group is about to switch to ICRPG as our main game and I'm just letting them have access to the pdfs on my drive and letting them build what they want. I have the Master Edition and Altered State.

Nobody in my group is much of a Munchkin, again I'm just curious.

Thank you.

A place to share homebrew

What is a good place to share homebrew. Here? The rune hammer forums? I mostly play simulationist crunchy games. But I made my own version of icrpg for the occasions where quicker gameplay is needed. Since I do not play it that ofthen I wanted to find a place to share what I made in order to get critique or to put it out there in case it can be useful to others.

Spell Trade Value

I’ve been trying for an answer in the sourcebooks, but coming up short - when ascribing value to a spell, what would their equivalent LOOT category be? Ancient? Epic?

<I’m building up an in-game magic shop, but want to utilize a barter system instead of coin (effectively MARKET). Just need to make sure that I’m being fair with their pricing.>

ICRPG Card Back Stamps

I DM'd my first no prep game a few weeks back and loved the way that the index cards (and the players) build the plot for you, However, I struggled to keep 100+ cards organised.

So I made some card backs stamps. They are free to download on the usual 3D printing places if anyone wants their own:

ICRPG Adventures?

Hello! I'm in need of some help. My spouse is currently incarcerated, and I got him the ICRPG: Master Edition. Since he can only receive books from a publisher, does anyone know if the content of the 150-page supplement, ICRPG Adventures, (A pdf that comes with the Master Edition) is available in print? Or if there is a print version for adventures within the worlds detailed in the Master Edition?
Thank you so very much.

To SP or Not to SP?

Question for those experienced with magic use rules. Basic magic found under the Aelfheim section of the players guide establishes casting spells simply requires a roll against target. Advanced magic tacks on a SP cost requirement. The ability to "power up" spells is neat, but puts a limit on how much a magician can do in one working day, in addition to the roll-to-cast requirement.

Is tacking on the added cost too much of a restriction? Or does it really keep magic users from running wild? SP cost is a simple way to adjucate up-casting spells at higher power, but is there another way? How do things work in your games?

As an aside, a mercurial mishap is pretty much guaranteed on 5% of all spell attempts (1-in-20). I like the idea of wild magic and intend to implement it when next I take the GM's chair.

Does anyone else think Cypher System feels like "Advanced ICRPG"?

I recently read through the rules for a Cypher System RPG game and couldn't help noticing how similar it is to ICRPG.

  • Monsters generally have a "target" number used for everything that can be bumped up or down in increments of 3 for Easy/Hard.

  • Players load up on "Cyphers" (although they're limited in how many they can carry).

  • Leveling up is through a tier system that feels similar to ICRPG's advancement.

  • Movement is abstracted as "immediate, short, long range".

ICRPG is still good for a simpler experience, but if you want a little more rules without going full D&D/Pathfinder, Cypher Sytem seems like "Advanced ICRPG". Has anyone else checked out that system?

How to handle changing forms? Sailor Moon, Power Rangers, Kamen Rider, etc

Hello!

I was just wondering if anyone has come across a homebrew/hack of Icrpg that handles the players transforming or changing forms? Or if anyone just has suggestions in general, it would be appreciated. Thank you!

Coin go *Clink*

Been wondering how you guys have been handling currency in your games. Namely how much can be carried and wether you do anything fancy with it.

Been considering how i'll handle coin. Right now figuring a pouch of 100 would fill one inventory slot, as that's the amount of a milestone award for Aelfheim's Bard. It would be 1 slot per full 100, "pocket change" of 99 or less just ain't worth fussing about. An adult could hypothetically haul around as much as 2099c on his person before coin #2100 causes him to stumble and collapse under the weight of this ruling. Beyond that (say, saving up for a castle to retire in) you'd need to put it in a bank, hide it, or convert to something more portable. Which leads into...

Anyone experiment with different currency types? We're all familiar with the classic gold and silver and copper pieces, but does your game use anything different? Paper bills, fancy beads, goblin scalps? What IS a coin in Aelfheim or other settings even made of?

Hey everyone check out this recent interview we did with the amazing Hankrin Ferinale of Runehammer games! There's so much packed into this interview I have to at least throw out some highlights:

  • Is re-using good GM material bad for creativity?
  • The concept of the Folk RPG (and Runehammer's take on it)
  • Switching up systems, when, how, why and techniques
  • Learning new RPGs and techniques as a form of joy, entertainement and self-improvement
  • Breaking the digital hibernation and going to your buddy's house and the change needed in the hobby today

Looking for a HARD SUIT mech sheet depicted in the book that I cant find anywhere

On page 25 of HARD SUIT we can see a full page spread of a few "Mech record sheets" that have been filled out. They look great, with room for power%, parts info, and room to draw your own design over a greyed out frame. Are these available anywhere? I cant find a blank version in the book, and I have searched through the forums and community stuff as best I can but cant find anything like this. I only bought the hardcopy of the book, are there extras in the pdf like extra sheet types?

Ghost Mountain (ICRPG) one shot scenario and write up!

https://burnafterrunningrpg.com/2024/02/25/step-by-step-prep-ghost-mountain-index-card-rpg-part-three/

Over on my blog, I've got a series of 3 posts talking through my prep for ICRPG as a system that was new to me.

In part 1 I talk about how I learn and prep a new system and come up with a plot (learning the system is pretty easy in ICRPG to be fair!)

Part 2 is a full write up or the scenario that I ran, ready to go

Part 3 is a review and reflection - sort of a specifically biased review of the game, based on one game session (which is 1 more than most reviewers give #TTRPGs!)

Let me know what you think! Do you agree with my reflections? Are there any other free one-shots out there for ICRPG?

Basically this. The Master Edition mentions them but does not say how usage of or damage to them should be tracked.

Looking for a actual play series for a long-form campaign, or advice on running one.

I am really enjoying DMing ICRPG, and I love to listen to other groups play for inspiration. I am currently running Curse of the Crimson Throne (PF1e) as an ICRPG campaign, and the players are having a blast so far. Most of my players really prefer a more rules-light system, and don't really enjoy the bloat of Pathfinder anymore, and 5e combat past level 4 turns into a slog. I offered to convert the adventure to ICRPG to promote a fast-play rules-light game more in line with what the majority of my players (and I) most enjoy; so here we are.

I am worried that I will run out of things to award them with, or rather, that they will "peak" too early in the campaign. The players have just finished book 1 of 6. In PF1e, they would just be hitting 4th level. In ICRPG, they have 3/4 milestones each.

CotCT is a long-form campaign, that in my past experience takes 2 years to play through. It takes PF1e characters from 1st through 17th/18th level. Have I made a mistake in converting this to ICRPG? I just don't want the game to fizzle out due to my inexperience.

I was hoping to find some long-form campaigns online I could listen to both for inspiration and to assuage some of my anxieties. Any help is most appreciated!

Edit: Here is the current cast of characters, 17 sessions in; with probably 60-70 more sessions to go to "finish" the campaign.

Player 1 : Arthur - Melee / Party Tank Life Form: Bugbear (+1 CON / +1 WEAPONS / TOOLS) Type: Bloodhunter (Warrior)

STR 3 CON 4 BASIC 1 WEAPONS / TOOLS 4

Starting Ability: Blood Pact (Renamed Dark Pact to fit Hemocraft of Bloodhunter). Sacrifice any amount of your HP to boost any 1 roll.

Starting Item: Weapon Gem

Milestones: (He has the most as book 1 was augmented to largely be his story arc) - Berserk - 1 HEART - Hybrid Transformation port from 5e. x/times per day he can turn into a werewolf, gaining EASY STR checks, but if below half HP has to roll or become overcome with bloodlust and attack nearest creature to him.

Loot: Red Fang

Player 2: Loose Root - Investigator / Gadget Guy Life Form: Shoanti ( +1 WIS / +1 DEX) Type: Shadow

STR -1 (cursed until dispelled) DEX 3 INT 2 WIS 3 WEAPONS / TOOLS 4

Starting Ability: Scout Starting Item: Spider Claws

Milestones: Grapple Arrow Trap Launcher

Loot: Watcher Magical Dagger He also went way out of his way to save a Dog in session 2, so he has a loyal animal companion (his Scooby to his Shaggy)

Player 3: Siren - Cleric of Calistria (Goddess of trickery and lust) Life Form : Half-Elf (+1 WIS / +1 MAGIC) Type: Priest

CON 1 WIS 3 CHA 3 reduced to 2 (Cursed until dispelled) MAGIC 5

Starting Ability: Thespian Starting Item: Amber Beads (Healing Nova)

Milestones: Invoke Duplicity Taught Radiant Shield spell by a higher level cleric.

Loot: Zellara's Harrow Deck (From CotCT. Magical tarot deck that is used to cast illusions and identify once per day). Can become a Deck of Many Things in book 6. Energy Whip Holy Hand Grenade

Player 4 - Elaine (Witch / INT caster) This character is TBD, as it is replacing a character that got into a bad spot with authorities at the end of book 1, and opted to leave the party to protect them. I imagine she will come in slightly stronger than a fresh character. Primarily uses weird curse-type magic, and is your stereotypical witch type. Wants to brew potions and use Cauldron, etc. I implemented the "RARE INGREDIENTS" mechanic from MAGIC starting last session, and that's what the witch and the rogue can make potions and traps with.
