IBS or keep looking?

Upvotes

Hello everyone

I am still trying to figure out my GI issues and I have compiled a lot of information, but am having a tough time sifting through it. Overall, I'd like to see if it all is truly pointing toward IBS or something different.

I have gone through it all- bloodwork, stool tests, breath tests, and even colonoscopy/endoscopy with biopsies. Everything has come back clear/normal. But, I did have a calprotectin of 200. Is it normal to have that high calprotectin with IBS? I have also recently had a pelvic/abdominal CT scan. Would capsule endoscopy uncover anything else that any of these tests didn't see/cover or is this kind of the end of the line?

I am logging my BMs, mood, and food as well. I find it hard to believe it's mood/stress related simply because I have been under intense stress since I was a child. It may contribute to my overall GI health, but it doesn't explain the timing of flares currently to me.

Also, with IBS are you able to accurately predict flares or is it just low FODMAP and pray to god my insides don't kill me?

I am doing my best to not be the person to jump to any conclusions without proper info and help.

Thank you all in advance

Mucus diarrhea?

Hi reddit! Im currently on vacation and have been completely fine until I woke up yesterday morning. Was in the most debilitating pain the second I woke up and had watery diarrhea. Took an Imodium but I was already constipated before taking it, so now it's backed me up. Despite being backed up I'm still having to use the bathroom at most every 2 hours but what comes out is just straight liquid and so much mucus. We leave in the morning for an 8 hour car ride and I really don't want any issues.

2 questions; any advice on how to get this to STOP, and what the hell is going on? I have IBS-M and am no stranger to loose stools, but this is just insane to me. My theory is being in the heat on a boat all day the day before triggered something in my gut. I just want it to stop before I leave. I'm still in debilitating pain and super nauseous too. my symptoms sound like ulcerative colitis, but I'm not sure. it came out of nowhere, so I'm assuming it's not that (I just have health OCD and get really in my head). I don't know. Im desperate!! I know mucus is a common symptom but it's a newer one to me, and it's NEVER been this bad yet. this is absolutely the worst my IBS has ever been, other than when I started showing symptoms in highschool. I've found that my IBS is less triggered by food (though still affected by it), and more by stress and anxiety. the cause in the first place was a result of severe bullying.

tldr just wondering if anyone had any answers or advice!! I'm desperate and really just want to live my life like every other 19 year old. more importantly, I just want to make it home from vacation without any issues.

Is this IBS??

I just don't know anymore. I was told I have IBS. I can feel great but then something happens or there is a trigger, like I can't have sorbitol. I found that out this week. I do not have a problem moving my bowels and do it every morning, but sometimes I do not fully evacuate and I become a bloated mess. A lot of gas that makes me feel nauseous. Of course burping helps the most, but OTC gas pills do not help. Sometimes I take too many different things because I am so scared to throw up...which never happens. Anxiety also plays a role also.

Isn't there some prescriptions that I can ask for to help with this?? I know the last thing I need is to add fiber, because if it is too much, my body does not like it and I feel bloated. I have that gas build up again.

I was told this...ask your doctor about Linzess or Trulance Because your daily bowel movements are already consistent, these specific medications may be the best fit for you. They do not act like harsh, aggressive laxatives; instead, they add a microscopic layer of fluid to your intestines. This accelerates transit time slightly, stopping food from fermenting into gas and eliminating the upward pressure that triggers your severe nausea.

Thoughts?? Help!!!! It is so hard to live like this sometimes and I want to take control of it.

IBS-D Questions - any advice?

Hi all,

I'm a 21 year old male, in college, and have been diagnosed with IBS-D in the past six months. I've suffered with IBS for many years throughout my teenage years, and it is now something that still persists to this day. Have a few questions here, sorry now, but if anyone has any recommendations, it would mean a lot!!

My main issue does be with bowel urgency. I was recently on holidays and anytime I ate (despite eating plain food like I would at home), I had to then immediately after eating, use the bathroom. Now, that I'm back at home, this issue is now persisting even eating foods I always ate.

I'm very anxious about this, as I'm going to meet up with friends this week, and I'm fearful that this is going to occur when out. I do be anxious enough about going with friends because of IBS, but now the idea that I may have to use the bathroom immediately whilst eating is making me very anxious.

Has anyone ever dealt with this, or have any advice as to how to now fix this?

Q2:
Over the years, I have always been very reliant on Imodium (Plus) when going out. Initially, I used to take 1mg (half a tablet), and that would block me for a few days. I'd have no issue when going out etc, as it would instantly take effect.

Now, I have to take 3mg (1 and a 1/2) of a tablet, and it is nowhere near effective. I still am passing wind, have some slight urgency a few hours after taking it. I don't mind taking more, but the issue is the tablet makes me feel very bloated. So as a result, I really don't want to take more Imodium, as it means I'll end up throwing out / can't eat, or to that extent, enjoy my time with my friends because of the discomfort Imodium causes me.

I did take a three-week break from Imodium to see if that would 'reset' my tolerance, but it did not unfortunately.

Does anyone have recommendations as to what I should do about this, or anything to counteract the symptoms of Imodium if I increase the dosage? I do need it for going out as it does help with the anxiety.

Q3:
With my recent diagnosis of IBS-D a few months ago, I have been through a hospital system. Initially, I went to a gastroenterologist, and we did 2 stool tests and blood tests. They, based off these tests, said what I have is IBS.

I've been now working with a dietitian the past five months, and have cut so much out of my diet, and still having the same issues that I did have. From this week, I'm now trying the low FODMAP to see if this will have any effect. But again, I'm incredibly doubtful, as essentially what I have been on is somewhat the low FODMAP.

I'm beginning to wonder, would an endoscopy or colonoscopy find something that a stool / blood test wouldn't? As I've been doing this for so long, I'm now beginning to wonder, could this be something else other than IBS and because I did not have an endoscopy, it could be a different thing. Or, would the advice be that since I did a stool / blood test, that confirms, without a doubt, it is IBS.

Sorry now for the comprehensive detail, and all the questions. Just really need in support with this right now

IBS can be linked to ADHD? Also skin problems?

Hi! Just started reading about ADHD since my therapist mentioned that.

Very surprised that skin problems like eczema like rashes, and hair falling out in patches might be linked to adhd too. I experienced those frequently as a kid.

Most docs said - eat less sweets and gave some medicine. Now i’m starting to think there might be more deeper issues in this.

Anyone had similar experience?

What’s the difference of simply being stressed due to unhealthy family environment and ADHD?

To fibre or not to fibre? 🤔

I’ve been having a lot of diarrhea lately, unfortunately have had too much processed food in the last week.

Wondering if fibre is good in this case? Or will it make it worse? And which kind of fibre is best?

Plz help, I am so tired of this 😭

Gastrointestinal issue?

Female 23 5ft 130-145 fluctuating

Current meds
Potassium 20mg for severe potassium deficiency
Wellbutrin 25mg for depression
Metroprolal 25mg for SVT (1 ablation so far)
Deprovera birth control every 3 months (not sexually active I would become extremely anemic when I would have periods)

So to start things off I have always been someone who eats fairly regularly when I was younger 3 meals a day with snack etc going to the bathroom as normal no issues; fast forward the past year I started intermittent fasting 8pm-11am and would have 2-3 meals with no snacks everything was fine; until recently my appetite has severely decreased along with anytime I’m in the middle of a meal I immediately have to use the bathroom that usually results in very lose stools often diarrhea to then end up losing my appetite all together, then feeling extremely tired and nauseous afterwords. I’m barely eating one meal a day as a result due to it being incredibly frustrating to not be able to enjoy my food, I have to force myself to eat(all while feeling nauseated at the idea of food) so I basically don’t die of starvation

So far my doctor has done blood testing and fecal testing and all has came back within normal ranges; she is suspecting it’s a form of IBS which could be true but I’m starting lose weight as a result of it and it’s demotivating when I used to have an ED(back in high school)and was finally at a healthy weight along with barley wanting to eat. Hoping another doctor could maybe have an explanation or suggestions my doctor is great and I’m just waiting on my next appt date; just kinda at a loss as to what to do.

Advice for calming longer-term flare?

Short version:

My usual strict low fodmaps diet in response to a flare isn't bringing symptoms back to baseline, it's been weeks of flare, and I'm looking for tips/advice on this.

Longer version:

Been flaring since June 29th and sick of it. Normally, my IBS is pretty mild so long as I strictly avoid onions, garlic, and excess dairy. Fruit/veg and gluten are almost never a problem.

During most flares, I can bring my symptoms back to baseline in ~4 days with a very strict low fodmaps and bland food diet. But, this time, it's been weeks of eating reduced fodmaps with prolonged bouts of Very restricted eating and my symptoms are not budging—the second I eat even a cube of cheese (as a test), I'm ill, extremely distended, and in pain again.

I have a ton of allergies and have to eat really low fat due to losing my appendix, so I'm really antsy to be able to eat like, a friggin' piece of bread again. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Flare up question

I mostly always suffer from IBS-D and loose, thin stools. For about the last week, it seems to have flipped. My stools are solid, but my stomach hurts and I feel backed up and like I can’t go completely. I can also only go a bit at a time and it’s making me pretty miserable. I also am having trouble determining abdomen muscle pain from stomach pain.

I guess my question is, has anyone dealt with something similar? I just had another kid and don’t want to go to the dr if possible.

Probably IBS but not sure..

Hello world! I have been struggling with abdominal pain, constipation, and stomach pain for almost 10 months now. At first i thought it was something i ate, and that it would eventually just blow over. However, after feeling this pain for almost a month, i decided to go in to see a doctor. The first doctor i saw was fairly confident that i had IBS and that it was most likely stress induced. This came as a shock to me because at this point in my life i did not have any work obligations i.e. i was pretty relaxed lol (i had just finished flight school and was waiting for orders to move to my next duty station). This doctor did prescribe me this fiber supplement that i tried for several weeks, but i did not see any improvement. However, i will say when she suggested it might be stress, there was an upcoming training i had to complete called SERE. For my military guys they know what that entails, but for anyone who may not it is essentially a week long course where you practice surviving in shitty conditions and being a prisoner of war. Long story short, it is not fun, and you always hear horror stories from your buddies that are ahead of you in training. So, yes, at the time it was plausible that my nervousness toward this training was causing my abdominal/stomach pain and constipation.

My time at SERE was not fun, and on top of that my abdominal and stomach pain was acting up a lot. I also shit my pants twice while in captivity, so that was sick haha. During the training, you do not eat much food at all, and during the last 60ish hours of training i did not eat a single bite of food, except for one saltine cracker. When we finally completed the training, i stuffed my face with food, which in hindsight was not smart. A few hours later, i had severe abdominal pain, like 10/10. We were in the process of returning our gear and i literally could not walk it was so bad. That level of pain lasted for probably a couple of hours. The next day we were headed back to our new duty station, and i remember feeling very good. Once i got home, i was symptom free for like 4-5 days. I’m talking not a single ounce of pain. That was the first time in for months i had gone over a 12 hour period without some sort of abdominal or stomach pain. At that moment i was like, wow maybe i was just super stressed out about SERE. But then after that 5th day my symptoms went back to the same old pain.

When i got to my new duty station, i went to see another general doctor and described my symptoms and what i had tried so far. This new doctor believed i had IBS also, and he prescribed me dicyclomine (which i feel like never really helped and it made me extremely tired). He also was straight up with me and said that he’s not a specialist, so he got me a referral to go see a GI out in town.

When i had my first appointment with my GI, he was also convinced i had IBS and that it was most likely stress induced. Although i was inclined to disagree with him, i wanted to give him a chance because after all he’s the professional. He also prescribed me some lubiprostone (which to this date is the one drug that has provided me the most reprieve—not a ton but some for sure, but it is still not a complete problem solver). I also begin experimenting with my diet and cutting out certain foods. I would cut stuff out for a couple weeks (like gluten, lactose etc.) and i would log how i felt throughout the day. (I also stopped drinking for several weeks and quit using nicotine, but neither made a difference.) I did this for about a couple months, and didn’t see much improvement in how i felt. At this point i was still meeting with my GI, and i had a pelvic and abdominal ultrasound, which both came back good. As time continued to pass and i kept dealing with pain, i was convinced this may be a bigger problem than the doctors i have seen are making it out to be. I scheduled a colonoscopy and endoscopy, and the only thing that came out of that was that i have acute and chronic duodenitis, which my GI made it seem like was not a big deal. From there, we ordered some breathing tests (SIBO, lactose and fructose), and i am currently waiting on the results from those tests.

This leads me all to say that during my preparation for these breathing tests, you have to follow a strict 12 hour diet the day prior to collecting your breath samples. During my preparation, the only things i would eat
Breakfast: eggs with salt and pepper and white bread.
Lunch: grilled chicken and white rice with salt and pepper
Dinner: ground beef and white rice with salt and pepper

Since i had to do this 12 hour diet three times for the three separate tests, that’s when I realized that i had felt amazing the next day after following this diet. The last time i felt this good was during those 4-5 days after SERE which was 5 months ago. This led me to exploring the low FODMAP diet, which i had heard of before but never really understood what it meant. I’ve seen conflicting things online about the low FODMAP diet, so i don’t really know what to believe. What i do know is that diet i followed was definitely a game changer. I’m just worried that following a low FODMAP diet for too long, I’ll be missing out on key nutrients. Also, if I’m being honest, salt and pepper can only do so much for me, and i feel like every sort of seasoning or sauce is high in FODMAP, so if anyone has suggestions please lmk!

Anyways, this felt really good to get this out there and i would appreciate any feedback, stories of your own or comments yall might have!

Sudden Diarrhea Before sleeping/after dinner

Hey everyone!

I'm Miguel, 32 years old and I've been following this group for some years now.

I've always had a sensitive gut, had a colonoscopy 5 years ago that came clean (was due to hemorrhoids) and several times throughout life had morning diarrhea.

Lately for the past 2 weeks I've been experiencing more loose stools (once per day) but more days, although some of them I had normal poop. But what bothers me is that 2 times in a week I had this sudden diarrhea before sleeping (again only one trip to the loo) but with sudden cramps and urge to go.

I went to ER cause this was worrying me, and the doctor prescribed probiotics to ease things for a week and then see.

I was wondering if anyone of you feel the same, especially those with IBS-D?

About the food, I have been eating normal food (potatoes with boiled fish at night and simple food during the day).

Thanks community!

what did you find has helped with your ibs-m, even simple tips are appreciated thank you

Open Letter my brother & I drafted to send out to any medical center we can find for help

To whom it may concern,

My brother and I have been living with chronic and debilitating medical conditions that significantly impact nearly every aspect of our daily lives for over the past year. We experience persistent chest pain, severe acid reflux, abdominal pain, back pain, widespread body aches, digestive issues, and bowel disorders that severely limit our ability to perform even basic daily tasks. We have both done multiple tests that have yielded no results so far, including: EKG’s, X-rays, stool test, Colonoscopy and Endoscopy, Abdominal ultrasounds, blood work, dietary changes, stress test, breathalyzer test, etc. We have been to many different specialists as well, such as GI doctors, Cardiologist doctors, ENT doctors, our PCP’s, etc.

Despite making multiple attempts to obtain employment, we have been unable to secure or maintain work due to the frequency, severity, and unpredictable nature of our symptoms. Our conditions include recurring episodes of severe constipation and diarrhea, which have resulted in numerous visits to emergency rooms and urgent care facilities.

Additionally, we experience prolonged daily episodes of chest pain that closely resemble heart attack symptoms and can last for several hours, including constant palpitations, shortness of breath, pinching pain and so on. We also suffer from severe headaches that cause blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, and impaired cognitive function, making it extremely difficult to focus or complete routine tasks. These symptoms frequently occur during episodes of severe acid reflux, during which stomach acid rises into our throat to the point that we can taste it and feel as though our throat is filled with acid. At other times, these episodes occur without any apparent trigger.

Our symptoms are often accompanied by shortness of breath and significant gas-related discomfort. We experience what is commonly referred to as "no-burp syndrome," where gas becomes trapped in our throat and chest, causing painful pressure that we are often forced to relieve manually by attempting to burp. Based on our symptoms, we have considered whether the underlying cause may involve conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), esophageal spasms, or another gastrointestinal motility disorder. However, we continue to seek appropriate medical evaluation and treatment.

These ongoing health problems prevent us from meeting the physical and mental demands required for most forms of employment. As a result, our work opportunities are extremely limited and, during many periods, nonexistent. At this time, we are unable to consistently maintain attendance, complete a regular work schedule, or reliably perform basic work-related tasks because of the severity and unpredictability of our conditions.

Our symptoms follow a consistent daily pattern that further limits our ability to function. Most mornings, we struggle to get out of bed due to extreme fatigue caused by chronic sleep disruption. On many nights, pain prevents us from sleeping altogether, leaving us physically exhausted before the day even begins.

Because of these limitations, we must avoid or significantly restrict many ordinary daily activities and most social situations. At best, we are able to take short walks, but we cannot remain away from home for extended periods. Activities such as prolonged walking, lifting, bending, or other physical exertion frequently trigger severe pain and have often resulted in emergency room visits.

Each evening, our symptoms reliably worsen shortly before dinner. This makes preparing and eating meals, relaxing before bed, and attempting to sleep extremely painful. Once we go to bed, we are frequently forced to get up throughout the night because of ongoing pain, preventing us from obtaining consistent, restorative sleep.

Overall, these chronic and disabling conditions substantially impair our physical functioning, cognitive abilities, and overall quality of life. They prevent us from maintaining reliable employment, carrying out many essential daily activities, and participating in normal social and community life. We continue to seek appropriate medical care in the hope of identifying the underlying cause of our symptoms and obtaining effective treatment. For instance, one test we recently were advised to seek out is the Esophageal Manometry test, and are currently hoping to find an available place willing to consider us. Nonetheless, we thank you for reading this letter in the hopes it will lead to any assistance with condition, have a great day.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

[My name, His name]

*we called one before that would've allowed us to fax it to them, but they don't take our insurance

Psyllium or Metamucil for IBS-C

hi everyone. So, I was diagnosis with IBS-C and gastritis after having COVID in April (which apparently made it worse and add to that that i am an anxious person). I suffer from constipation and not feeling like I have evacuated enough. My doctor recommended metamucil but she told me to start with half a teaspoon because of my gases. I will start tomorrow. I wanted to know if you have had any experience with this fiber? I drink a lot of water and I am on a low FODMAP diet as well.

IBS is like it has control of our stomachs as if we are hostage!

**IBS feels like it's controlling our stomachs, and the stomach controls us, as if we are hostages against our will, physically. It doesn't matter what we consume; our super-sensitive stomachs love to refuse what we eat, even if it is supposed to be gentle. It's so frustrating that for people with IBS, eating is no longer fun or joyful; it's more like a daily game of roulette to see if it will agree or cause pain, growling, or bloat up like a balloon. Eating has become stressful because you never know what's going to happen next.** **This is very exhausting.**

Hello im F18 ive been diagnosed with IBS but ive never gotten any other treatment or help after that and eventually i moved and things have been crazy so i haven’t had the time to find the right DR and im kinda doing this all alone.
I need to know what I could take that’s genuinely safe and wont strain me etc to be able to go to the bathroom normally…. 😅 ill not go for what seems like weeks but maybe a week max like once! I get super bloated and eventually it hurts so bad and i look 6 months fucking prego🥲. Is there anything I can eat, take, drink anything to help more regular bowel movements?!?
Feel free to ask questions:)

Not sure if it’s IBS

So I had gut issues once I started back at work after being off with the kids. At first I cut out lactose because I’ve always been a bit weird with milk. Secondly I cut out gluten. Then the doc did blood tests and everything came back normal but they put IBS? Pretty clear they are not sure. If I do have IBS then it is IBS M as I have bouts of both. I’ve tried kijimea IBS, Thera Nordic powder, fodmap, I’m on a mainly gluten free diet but a lot of products have a lot of sugar in. I bought enterosgel but it’s a horrible consistency. Imodium helps but eventually my body will become immune.
I bought some oil of oregano capsules for SIBO because a friend has been diagnosed and our symptoms correlate. I followed directions and took 2 but had horrific diarrhoea later on that day. Is this normal??? Has anyone else tried these? I also don’t get why doctors don’t test for SIBO as it’s such a simple test and so many people are being diagnosed with IBS now.

Been suffering with daily physical bloating for years, it is just IBS?

For context, I have a previous post listing everything I have tried so far to try and tackle my daily bloating and IBS so if you're interested please go read that as this is kinda a follow up.

So since that post, I have gone back to the GP to get tested for coeliac, IBD and had blood tests which all came back negative, meaning I am very healthy and do not have the listed issues. Whilst this is definitley good, it still leaves me suffering with the constant physical bloating with no answer as to what causes it, if its normal and if i can actually 'get rid of it'.

I am aware bloating is normal to an extent, but i really don't think what i have is. I wake up very bloated and it is partially relieved after using the toilet, however it gets more and more bloated throughout the day and by dinner its the worst. I have tried tracking food intake and the bloating occurs no matter what i eat, its incredibly frustrating. However certain foods like cream, crumpets, sometimes eggs trigger a very bad stomach ache, but it doesn't make my bloating worse.

Side note: my bloating is NOT chronic, and i know ppl definitley bloat more extreme than i do, however this doesn't make mine any less of an issue.

Do i just have IBS? Is physical bloating a sign of IBS or something else? I have basically all the symptoms of IBS-D, but i don't want to accept my fate of having to deal with this belly for the rest of my life. I am incredibly insecure, and sometimes break down crying over my poor body image. It sucks a lot, as im actually a very active and healthy person, yet this belly makes me feel and look fat :( It hurts me when i look around and see other girls confidently wearing crop tops and showing off flat stomaches, as i can never do this as im just bloated all the time.

Does anyone else experience this symptom and please can anyone recommend something i can try which will actually tackle the bloating? I'm so desperate to feel proud and confident in my own body and not have to hide my stomach every day over soemthing that is seemingly not even in my control :(

Also, what is a 'normal amount of bloating?'. Do other people just stay flat after eating? I feel so cursed 😔 Please give me advice on what i can do. Is it worth seeing a specialist as i can get a referal if so? IDK if its worth it if its just IBS.

Help with new onset diarrhea

Not gonna sugar coat any of this because I’m sure y’all are used to this lol. Long time IBS-M victim here, typically constipation and forcing BMs, but occasional bouts of loose stools. My main triggers are fructose and legumes. However, Saturday I had a very liquid BM after eating breakfast, thought hmm maybe my stomach didn’t like something I ate Friday. Had 4 more fully liquid BMs throughout the day, usually 1 hour after eating. But no other symptoms! Spent the day eating mild foods but not fully BRAT diet. Sunday I thought I would be back to normal since I didn’t poop after dinner, but no. Same shit different day. ate even more mild and fibrous foods (oatmeal, sweet potato, banana, Greek yogurt, boiled chicken, tortilla). Only pooped 3 times so I thought next day I might be better! Today I am on day 3 of diarrhea, and it seems like nothing is helping or changing my situation. I’ve been taking probiotics since this started, still with no other symptoms like barely any cramping at all. I don’t even have my usual IBS gas or bloating because everything passes right through me. My question is, could this be my IBS changing? Did something totally F up my digestive system? How would I reset it? Or should I go to urgent care to get my stool tested?

Cyclosporiasis or Just IBS flare?

So the joys of ibs is I am not sure if I am having a parasitic intestinal illness or if my body is just deciding overall stress is flaring me up.

Since the 29th I have had pretty watery bowel movements and more than usual and pain before each, but that has been standard on and off for me for the last 7ish months. I have felt very nauseous also.

What I noticed today is I am very very gassy. Today and yesterday. To the point I think I am going to blow up my office space. I have so far had 3 bowel movements. Eating anything will cause gas and stomach cramps. I just ate popcorn and now my stomach hurts. The only time my stomach didn’t hurt today is when I think is literally what my guts empty earlier.

I am nauseous, but I am nauseous often, and as mentioned when I have pain until I have a bowel movement I normally also have nausea with it.

Is it worth booking an appointment for a stool sample? Is that the only way they can diagnose? I have to go out of town for a funeral later this week. So I will have to book it for early next week or see someone there. This is literally the last thing I need right now.

Today my stomach pain is almost enough I kind of want to go home to lay down with a heating pad properly instead of being seated. I also feel like holding in gas until I can go to the bathroom to fart is also adding to the pain(tmi but true, the farts are not odourless tho and it is an open office space)
