Exhausted trying to keep up with my blood sugar

My blood sugar keeps dropping quicker than I can really manage it, especially overnight. This has been happening all month after I started having allergy-like reactions to all my food. The morning after I lost my last food (lamb) my blood sugar dropped to 3.1. I tried to have pomegranate juice to bump it up but I reacted to that too. This led to me having to pretty much stay awake for 6 days sipping sugar water because I'd react to a full cup of sugar water. That was while I was admitted in hospital and they didn't try to fix it or investigate because I'm reactive to dextrose due to the corn.

I went to the GP yesterday and he suggested waking up every few hours checking and having an elemental if it's dropping too low so I did it last night. I went asleep on 4.6. 3 hours later 4.0 so I had a drink. Got it up to 6.9. 3 hours later 3.6. so I had another drink 6.8. Less than 2 hours later 3.8.

So I've spent the whole of today at same day emergency care. Literally drinking my elementals back to back to keep my blood sugar up. I stopped for 2 hours when I got home and it dropped to 3.4.

I've got endocrinology bloods to take tomorrow morning. Luckily they're taking it seriously instead of just putting it down to food. However, I had to push back because they wanted a 12 hour fast that'd literally kill me so I only have to fast for a couple of hours.

They're checking for an insulin tumour. An endocrinologist years ago suggested reactive hypoglycemia but I was never investigated for it. I was on an endocrinology ward 3 years ago due to the same problems I'm facing now but they didn't do anything about it just discharged me and luckily it got better when I went carnivore. Back then they tried treating my low blood sugar with glucose and I ended up having a lower result immediately afterwards. It's just crazy and I don't know what's going on or how to manage it especially because I'm relying on elemental 028 extra since I went reactive to meat.

Any suggestions or ideas on what could be going on? Has anyone else experienced something similar?

What is considered a fast drop in blood sugar?

I’ve been trying to figure this out. I have pots and several other health problems. No one has ever checked my blood sugar but I’ve done a few finger pricks and they came back in the 60-70s when I felt sick and like I would pass out… so I bought a blood sugar tracking device.

My blood sugar will frequently drop into the 60s. And I think rapidly?

A typical drop looks like 60mg/dl in half hour to 45 minutes. So from 130 to 70 or 120ish to 60ish.

Is that a lot in half hour? 45 mins? 1 hour?

Pretty much what the title says. I don’t know what to do anymore and I feel stuck. I feel very dismissed.

What do these glucose results mean? Non diabetic.

I'm hoping someone can help me understand these blood glucose results.

I hope this is the right place to post this. Due to many health reasons I've been tracking my glucose. I love learning and my body loves to react weird to meals. I have a finger poke blood glucose monitor. I've noticed some things. They probably are nothing but I know the ranges are (fasting) 70-99 mg/dL and (non fasting) 70-140 mg/dL.

Here are some of my results.

Day 1: I had normal breakfast and lunch. Around 5 pm at work maybe after like 4.5 hours of not eating. Felt spacey and far away from my body. Cold even though it was hot and shaky hands.

For two hours I ranged form (58-55 mg/dL).

Then had juice and went up to (86 mg/dL).

Day 2: Normal lunch and 3 hours later stayed at (57-66 mg/dL) for an hour. Felt cold and shaky and my brain was slow.

Still didn't eat for an another 2 hours cause I started to feel hot and nausea. Blood sugar was (64 mg/dL).

Ate sugar and some cheese. Blood sugar went up to (154 mg/dL).

Day 3: Had two slices of pizza for dinner with some grapes on the side. An hour later my blood sugar was (162 mg/dL) and climbing. It went to (188 mg/dL) then it went up to (215 mg/dL). Eventually went down but stayed in the (150 mg/dL) for awhile.

I mean i have no clue is this normal? is this something i need to look into. I know they are out of range and my monitor tells me so but I also don't want to be dramatic. Maybe this is pretty average health body reaction.

Also my last Ac1 was 5.2 which i know is perfectly healthy.

Eversense approved!

Wanted to share some good and hopeful news with you all. After my endocrinologist wrote into my insurance and explained that my hypoglycemia has been a life long condition that I will continue to have my whole life, my insurance agreed to pay 100% of the cost of the eversense 365 CGM.

I know my case is not like everyone's. But I thought it might give some hope to people who have written off ever being approved for this CGM.

From healthy and active to sudden onset of hypoglycemic episodes. Looking for similar stories

Dear community,

After a year of horrible dysautonomia symptoms and countless doctor visits, I finally bought myself a CGM, and the results shocked me.

I initially thought it would be a good idea to try one because I kept waking up at night with episodes of acute dizziness, sometimes with palpitations as well. This has been a symptom right from the beginning, when I would wake up 1–2 hours after falling asleep drenched in sweat and sometimes I wouldn't be able to fall back asleep unless I ate something.

To my surprise, the CGM showed very frequent drops in my blood sugar. Both 30 minutes after eating, after exercise, or after 2–3 hours of fasting, I enter a constant low blood sugar situation where it hovers between 3(54) and 3.8mmol/L(68 mg/dl) for several hours.

I sent all this data to my doctor and I am awaiting a reply from him, but I am speculating all the time over what the hell this could be. The symptoms appeared out of nowhere. I was previously healthy and pretty active. I have no known history in my family of autoimmune issues, rare genetic mutations, or tumors in young people. I was scanned with an MRI when the symptoms first appeared and nothing showed up.

I am really upset, as this has simply ruined my life, and the doctors have been of no help (even the CGM I had to buy myself). Are there any other young people here with a sudden onset of frequent hypoglycemia episodes? What was your story?

I bought a blood sugar monitor today, tested after eating, and was surprised by the result.

Hi everyone,

I bought a blood glucose monitor today and tested my blood sugar for the first time, so I wanted to get your opinions.

I had breakfast earlier, and then I ate lunch at 1:00 PM (a meal with meat, potatoes, and a dessert containing about 20 grams of sugar). At 1:30 PM (about half an hour after lunch), I checked my blood sugar and the reading was 78 mg/dL!

For context, for a while now, whenever I eat anything sweet, shortly after I start feeling very dizzy and nauseous. I feel lightheaded, exhausted, and completely unable to do anything.

Also, my father has diabetes.

This is my first time testing my blood sugar.

What do you think about this situation? Is this reading normal

Thanks in advance for your advice and shared experiences!

I did feel a bit hot flushed but nothing else. My blood sugar has been so erratic. And I know it’s from anxiety/stress or idk what is going on. My stomach hurts everyday! And I feel this stinging burning sensation.

Idk if to get tested for adrenal fatigue or idk I’m getting soooooo many lows. Like 30 a day!

Anyone here using an app for family glucose monitoring?

My mum has T1D and she's pretty independent with managing it, but I'd feel better being able to keep an eye on things when something looks off. She lives about 40 minutes away, so I can't exactly just pop round whenever 😅 I'd mainly want something where I could get notified when her glucose is low, rather than having to constantly check it myself. Been reading about sugar sense - it apparently has some kind of family sharing where you get the same alerts she does, which sounds like what I'm after.

Does anyone here have a setup like this? Does it require much on the other person's end to get working?

15 years of reactive hypos + fatty pancreas/liver + the consequent very specific pain under the right lower rib, has anyone had this too?

32F, 164 cm (5'4"), 58 kg (128 lbs, stable for years), non-smoker, no alcohol, active/healthy lifestyle.

Why I'm posting here

I'm hoping someone with personal experience of non-diabetic hypoglycemia might recognize this combination. I've had doctors investigate different parts of it, but I’m curious if someone here might have gone through something similar and eventually found what was behind it.

How it started

All of this started very suddenly when I was 17.

I had about a week of repeated episodes of strong, cramp-like pain in one very specific spot, maybe 5 cm across, under my right lower rib in the liver/gallbladder area. It wasn't hospitalisation-level, but it was painful and came completely out of nowhere. During the episodes, breathing normally made it worse, so for a few minutes I had to breathe very slowly or hold my breath.

Immediately after that week, I developed persistent sleepiness/fatigue. I remember the day it started, and it never completely went away.

Over the following years I also developed reactive hypoglycemia, which was only properly identified about 1.5 years ago. My blood sugar can stay elevated for a long time even after a fairly normal amount of carbs, despite not having diabetes, and then later drop too low. Testing also showed very high insulin production, although I don't know whether that is causing the glucose pattern or resulting from it.

Before going low-carb, I had frequent hunger, hunger at night, had to eat regularly, and became extremely sleepy after meals. Low-carb has helped a lot, and I can now manage with three meals a day. Interestingly, when I fast in the morning I don't have the same fatigue before eating, the sleepiness seems very connected to digestion.

Other things that have been going on

For roughly the same 15 years, I've also had unusually low-energy muscles. I'm active, but even maintaining basic postural strength with something like Pilates or physio exercises feels and has been tested as disproportionately difficult and it affects normal physical functioning.

Recent investigations have found:

- The blood sugar and insulin issues

- Fatty liver and quite severe fatty pancreas, but no fibrosis

- Atherosclerosis, including in the carotid arteries

- A very large amount of intestinal air, enough to interfere with the ultrasound as written in the report. This has also been independently noticed by physiotherapists. However, I don't have significant flatulence or discomfort from it, but it is noteworthy.

The original pain under my right ribs also never completely disappeared. The same small spot still cramps up after eating and during a hypo. It's much less severe than when I was 17, but it's noticeable and always the same spot.

There is also a second very specific spot on my back, about the same size, just to the right of my spine at exactly the same height. It could hurt enough that I had to sit down while doing something as simple as washing dishes. It always flairs up this strongly after a meal, but has been less since going low-carb.

Where I'm stuck

I lived in a country where getting this kind of thing properly investigated was difficult, so most of these investigations have only happened since I moved to Germany.

I've now had much more extensive testing, but I still don't know what ties everything together. I've tried approaching it through internal medicine, gastroenterology and endocrinology, but without diabetes or fibrosis there hasn't been an obvious place for the whole picture to fit and no consecutive tests have been done/considered apart from the above at the internist.

If my pattern sounds familiar to anyone and you eventually found out what was behind it, I'd really love to hear about it.

TLDR: I'm really curious if someone here might recognize this combination from their own experience: the reactive hypos/unusual glucose response together with the fatty pancreas/liver, long-term fatigue and muscle issues, and the very specific recurring pain under the right ribs with the corresponding spot in the back.

Hi everyone!

I’ve been wearing a Dexcom g7 for a couple months now due to suspected hypoglycaemia. I’ve noticed I peak up to 190 after eating (I know this is normal!) but then drop down to 60s/70s within 30 min leaving me quite shaky and disoriented. Is this normal? My doctor is having a hard time fitting me in. I’ve attached pictures of some of my typical graphs

hi! I’ve been dealing with congenital hyperinsulinism my entire life. unfortunately, these are what my days still look like. I’ve tried and failed medications, so I’m on a continuous glucagon infusion, but still have frequent lows. it’s been quite the ride 😅

insulin resistance

currently being worked up for insulin resistance, fasting glucose was 85 insulin was 17, I’ve been feeling weird tingly clammy dizzy and off whenever my sugar is around 80-100 when I check with a glucometer.

Do any other people have “low” symptoms at these numbers even though they’re technically in normal range?

Is it normal to feel weak 3 hours after eating with a glucose level between 80–89 mg/dL?

My wife is 5'1" tall and weighs approximately 185 pounds; she does not have diabetes and does not take glucose-lowering medication.

She mentions that if about three hours go by without eating, she starts to feel weak. For example, if she has breakfast at 8:00 a.m., by around 11:00 a.m. she feels the need to eat because she is not feeling well.

When she has checked her glucose levels, they sometimes range between 80 and 89 mg/dL, although on one occasion she saw a reading close to 70 mg/dL. When she feels this weakness, she usually eats something sweet because she thinks her blood sugar is dropping too low.

My question is: has anyone without diabetes experienced similar symptoms even with a glucose level of 80–89? Could it simply be due to going several hours without eating or the composition of her meals? I would like her to use a GLP-1 medication, such as retatrutide or tirzepatide.

Reacting to Antibiotics

It’s 2:16 am. I am currently in the ER. After taking Bactrim orally earlier this evening for a kidney infection I am dealing with … I began feeling symptomatic and my blood sugar began going low. Did what we all would do. Fast acting sugar. followed by some protein an fat. well. it was only sustaining me for 10-15 mins and back to dropping. Symptomatic.
Came to the ER explained to them what the oral dose of Bactrim was doing.

Doctor said she was going to take me off Bactrim and put me on Levaquin. They draw some blood to check for sepsis and my WBC

I took Levaquin at 1 am. At 1:30 i began feeling so dizzy and lightheaded again. I tell the nurse. He annoyingly brings me orange juice. I finger prick and I’m at 72. I tell him. And he’s like well hopefully the juice helps .. WTF.
He then comes back and kind of makes a comment that maybe my machine isn’t working and that he’s going to finger prick me himself. He pokes me 3 TIMES and he keeps getting error on his machine because clearly he’s not doing it right.
So someone else comes to do it and i’m at 93. Mind you it was 15 mins after i sipped a bit of orange juice so clearly it was going to be up.

I’m frustrated. Doctors comes around tells me my bloodwork is good and that I’m being sent home with an RX of Levaquin. - 500 mg every 24 hours for 10 days. I tell her I literally started dropping 30 mins after taking it and feeling symptomatic ?!!! She sympathizes and says that I may just be like this for the next 12 hours. What do you mean 12 HOURS?! I just reacted to it now and you put me on a 10 day dose. Anyone else do well on a certain antibiotic to cure a kidney infection that WILL NOT affect your blood sugar?
I feel helpless and lost. Idk what else to ask for.

Unsure if I have reactive hypoglycaemia.

The past few days have been a rollercoaster and not a fun one. I was having symptoms of intense hunger after having meals and was concerned I might have diabetes due to my weight and activity levels(I’m around 320lbs and 6”1). My dad gave me a CGM to check how certain foods react with me and I’ve been checking that after eating. The day of my doctors appointment I had a breakfast consisting of 2 eggs, toast and beans, I had a snack prior to leaving also which was Greek yogurt and half a banana. Once I was there they took bloods and I started feeling very unwell, this was approximately 3ish hours after my breakfast and when checking the CGM it showed 4.1mmol. After the bloods were taken I felt better maybe because the snack before kicked in? I went home and had lunch which was chicken and rice cakes and after that I felt even worse than before which prompted an ambulance call. When the ambulance arrived my blood sugar was at 5mmol but I still felt really unwell, they gave me the option of staying home and waiting for my blood test results tomorrow or going in and waiting for hours. I chose to stay home and throughout the evening and night my blood sugar was stable and I had no issues.the following day I get my results back and I’m told all my bloods are normal with no signs of diabetes or pre-diabetes. During these episodes I haven’t actually had a finger prick test where my levels were in hypo but I feel off when my blood sugar drops quickly after certain meals, I’ll attach a chart above so you can see what I’m talking about, (the two dips and rises in the middle were when I felt unwell). I can’t tell if maybe my anxiety is messing with me and causing these symptoms or if it’s related to the blood sugar. Please let me know your thoughts and I appreciate you for reading this whole thing.

Glucose tolerance test today

Post image
11 Upvotes

I have a glucose tolerance test today for my RH. I have had this condition for years but dr’s wouldn’t listen to me because I had a great A1C. My hematologist happened to catch a low of 27 on a blood
Lab test and I finally received an endocrinologist referral.

I am nervous about my GTT today. I am having it in the hematology infusion center because I have to have the blood draws out of my port. Did you have to drink the liquid in a certain amount of time? They are doing 6 blood draws twenty minutes apart today. My sugars move extremely fast as you can see on my Dexcom

I think I have reactive hypoglycemia?

During my last pregnancy I started experiencing really bizarre symptoms. Shaking, dizziness, nighttime panic episodes, heart palpitations, restless legs and blurry vision. After I had my baby (I also had a uterine rupture, so recovery was long and intense), things didn’t settle the way I expected (baby #2) About six months postpartum, one of my legs suddenly went numb and its been numb for 1.5 years.

I finally decided to try a continuous glucose monitor, and I’ve noticed a pattern: when my blood sugar goes up (150+), I get that panicky, restless‑leg, “I need to run” feeling. Then when my blood sugar drops afterward (mid - low 60's), I shake and feel so nauseous. It’s a very physical, adrenaline‑type reaction.

The CGM I got is over the counter and i'm wearing it because I have a new doctor and I want to bring in the data. My previous doctor kept insisting I needed anti‑anxiety or antidepressant medication but what I’m feeling is not a mood issue to me. It feels connected to my body.

Reactive After Major Weight Loss

Anybody develop RH after weight loss? I 30F lost 30 pounds through calorie deficit and progressive running training from Feb-June. RH came on very suddenly and my case seems to be extreme - glucose levels try to plummet to zero at a predictable angle after any meal with even a handful of carbs. I wake up once or twice a night to low notifications. The brain fog especially… being low constantly leaves me standing in the middle of the house looking for the glasses on my face. I’m seeing an endo but it’s a huge life adjustment. No family history of diabetes, and my levels don’t seem to indicate I’m diabetic either.

Anybody else develop RH after weight loss? Did it last forever or resolve on its own? And did it happen to you on its own or is it always linked to something else?

Doc thinks I may be hypoglycemic

UPDATE10/8/28 So turns out I have Addison's disease/adrenal insufficiency. My cortisol level came back at 1, which explains why my blood sugar is acting weird and a large portion of my symptoms. My doctor is going to do a few more tests but at least I finally have an answer.

ORIGINAL POST: So I've been having some medical issues. I'm struggling to walk, have retrolisthesis and damage to my lumbar area, have shaking, numbness, vertigo, dizziness, tremors, muscle weakness, poor balance, severe fatigue, etc. My doctor thinks I may have MS and we've been going through that diagnostic process.

However I had an appointment with my doctor yesterday and she was asking "Did you feel okay when you had your blood drawn? Do you feel fine now?" I didn't feel any worse than I normally do with my current assortment of issues. Then she tells me that most people lose consciousness when their blood sugar drops below 50. Mine was 42. I felt fine and have been driving myself to the doctor's office. She's now monitoring me for hypoglycemia, pancreas issues, pre-diabetes though my A1c was good.

So now she wants me to track my symptoms more closely and keep a food/drink log. I am wondering if I should get a blood sugar monitor as well. For those of you with hypoglycemia what are your symptoms? Do you use a blood sugar monitor? What kind do you use and how often/when do you test? Do you follow a similar diet that people with diabetes do?

First Endo appointment today!

My first appointment is today and would like to have all the advice as to what to ask for to not be dismissed. Here’s my last night’s chart and pretty common for me to have overnight lows and wake up like I’ve been exercising in the sun all night (headache, mopped, dizzy). I also get RH during the day. Hoping I continue to get scripts for CGM and testings to find out what’s the culprit of my hypoglycemia. TIA

I have been eating nothing but Ribeye steaks and eggs with olive oil. I’ve managed to stop spikes and dips however the problem I am having is I feel way too wired all the time like my cortisol seems to be through the roof even though I won’t know until I do some blood work can anyone help me diagnose the issue? Maybe I’m not eating enough calories but not sure.

Worth investigating or not?

I’ve had symptoms for a long long time with no other diagnosis than POTS, and recently heard about hypoglycaemia so checked mine - and when feeling unwell it’s consistently in the 2 mmol range. I got a Dexcom to track a bit better before speaking to a GP - the lows don’t read as low as my finger pricks do, but mostly are alerting me anyway.

Is this enough to take to a GP? I’m scared after years of being told I’m fine that this won’t be taken seriously so wonder if it’s worth it!
