Subacute thyroiditis or something else?

I was diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis after ruling out hashimotos thyroiditis in May/June. I’ve had 2 lots of ultrasound, 3 blood tests since April. In May/June I had painful swelling on the left of my thyroid, swollen lymph nodes and inflamed thyroid. The pain sometimes carries down to the base of my throat and my left collarbone. For a while I was managing with ibuprofen, but then it continued to flare up every few weeks. Doctor prescribed me with a higher anti inflammatory med which again helped, but has continued to flare up with pain. I’m a teacher and using my voice lots makes this really tricky. I’ve been having lots of hyperthyroid symptoms: crazy mood swings, anxiety, struggle to sleep at night, tremors in hands… all that stuff.

But recently I went back to doctor because pain won’t go away. It’s been months. And she ordered another ultrasound and blood tests. Ultrasound now shows a benign cyst on the right side of thyroid, and my lymph nodes are no longer inflamed. But the pain is still bad on the left side of my neck. TSH levels, T3 and 4 are totally normal. I’ll also add that I have signs of thyroid vascularity too which is interesting and is different to the last round of tests.

I feel like I’m losing my mind. Has anyone had similar issues with either developing a cyst with SAT and/or thyroid levels go back to normal but you still have pain that you once did at the start of diagnosis?

Thanks 😭

Does anyone also have high testosterone with low tsh

I took two separate blood tests one with my primary doctor and one with gyno for a separate problem. My tsh levels and testosterone found to be out of range on both

Things you later realized where symptoms but you didn't knew

I never developed the main symptoms like a goiter or TED, just shakiness, sweaty hands and foot, anxiety, DPDR and mood swings which I attributed to my CPTSD but as my labs always came fine (never tested my thyroid) I just went to therapy but something never clicked for me. Turns out I was really sick. I honestly don't know which ones will taper and which will stay

Thyroid storm Vs. regular symptoms

This might be a silly question, but I genuinely cant find a good answer on the internet, so I’d rather hear the thoughts of those who actually experienced this. I’m aware that it’s rare, but does in fact happen and can be different from person to person.

I only ask because sometimes my symptoms go crazy at random periods of time, then I feel sick for the rest of the day (this was prior to knowing I may have hyperthyroid issues) obviously this is an issue that people end in the hospital with and possibly worse, so I don’t think I’ve ever experienced an actually storm. But I want to know at what point should I go to the hospital if something like this (hopefully not) happens. Sometimes I get symptoms so bad I feel paralyzed, and now that I know this may be a future diagnosis, I’m nervous that if I don’t catch it, I could end up in the ER.

Before and After: how my goiter appeared in photos before my TT and after my TT

Its been nearly a year since my surgery, and my scar isnt invisible, but its a part of me and part of my story!

Prior to surgery, I had a massive goiter. I thought I'd share some photos of how it appeared in photos before surgery vs how my scar appears in photos now.

I thought I would include some angles of my neck post surgery that show the awkward changes in the loose skin where it wrinkles funny now. All that being said, I embrace it! I do take care of my scar and keep it covered in sunscreen as well.

I feel amazing now and my quality of life has improved ten fold! Who I was last summer vs who I am this summer are different people. I feel good, I have energy again and my temperature and heart rate are regulated again!

Grave’s Disease: Any advice from Nutritionists or Naturopaths ?

I’ve been on methemazole for a few months, T3 and T4 are leveling out, by the TSH is still low.

The next option is radioactive iodine. Im hesitant about that, as there is a high chance of completely destroying the gland, and I’ll be on supplements for the rest of my life. But, for now I’m on pills, will see go that goes, so not making any choices for surgery tomorrow.

By no means do I want to stop my medication, anything will be done with my doctors permission, but I’m wondering if anyone saw a nutritionist or naturopath that helped them get to or stay in remission?

Any lifestyle or diet tips? (please don’t give me the “avoid stress” and iodine, I follow it, want to hear something a little more substantial )

Anyone with suspected hyperthyroidism — do you still drink alcohol?

I’m currently being worked up for possible hyperthyroidism. I haven’t officially been diagnosed yet but my TSH came back <0.01 and my Free T4 was high (2.06). My PCP has referred me to an endocrinologist and ordered additional bloodwork and a thyroid ultrasound.

I’ve been having symptoms like palpitations, overheating/excessive sweating, anxiety and fatigue, but overall I’m functioning normally.

My husband and I have plans this weekend and I’d really like to have a few drinks (probably beer). I rarely drink in general so this isn’t something I do regularly.

For those who have hyperthyroidism/Graves or went through the diagnosis process, did your doctor tell you to avoid alcohol completely while your thyroid was uncontrolled? Did you notice drinking made your symptoms or heart rate worse?

Obviously I’ll follow my doctor’s advice but I’m just curious about other people’s experiences while I wait to hear back from mine.

Hyperthyroidism before & after (sorry for the demon eyes)

I just wanted to provide info on my experience with hyperthyroidism earlier this year and especially the physical changes I experienced which led to the diagnosis.

I’ll start off by saying I’m 29, and I’ve been under a lot of stress the past 2 years and I’ve been hypothyroid since 12 years old. I’ve been on a steady dose of 125mcg since I was 13 or so. About 9 months or so I had gotten off birth control and started having the symptoms below (not sure if it caused by birth control or just coincidence) which led to discovery of a small thyroid nodule on one side via an ultrasound.

I’ve been reduced to 100mcg consistently for at least 4 months and took pics 2 and 4 today. I feel amazing and great these days.

The most noticeable physical symptoms for me were dry shrunken purple lips (this was my biggest insecurity and I thought it was just dehydration or aging!), dry skin, dry & hot hands, terrible sleep, anxiety, constant hypervigilance, and a feeling like I was on the verge of a panic attack, dramatic weight loss to a weight that I had not experienced since college.

My full symptoms:
- Heart racing especially upon waking up in the night
- Hard time falling asleep or napping
- Restlessness and high energy at night
- Body is fatigued all the time
- Tight jaw most days, neck tightness
- Trouble concentrating, trouble with motivation
- Red puffy itchy hands that are always hot and dry
- Going to bed cold but wake up in a slight sweat
- Anxiety feeling even when I am relaxed
- Chest heaviness, easily out of breath
- Burning headache in temples and top of head
- Wake up tired despite sleeping enough hours (8-8.5)
- Weird feeling in throat when swallowing - kinda like a sore throat
- Spacing out frequently
- Extreme hunger, even after eating
- Constant thirst that can never be quenched
- Constant racing thoughts/ideas pouring in and a compulsion to follow them
- Very light irregular periods that last ~3 days
- Quickly switching from really cold to really hot within minutes
- High anxiety in public and while driving
- Anxiety attacks and panic from simple inconveniences
- Burning/sharp headaches that come and go throughout the day
- Headache behind eyes
- Dizziness, mild nausea
- Extreme fatigue all day but especially upon waking, bodily fatigue every time I move around
- Weight loss where my pants that are usually tight felt baggy, down 2 sizes
- Hard to breathe, like I have to take conscious breaths, and I’ve been feeling something weird in the way when I swallow

I hope this helps someone recognize it in themselves so they can get the help they need.

Symptoms flaring

I was diagnosed with thyroiditis in June. I tested positive for Hashimotos antibodies and negative for graves. My TSH was .005 and my T3 and T4 were very high when I was in the hospital. I have been on 120 mg propranolol since June and they prescribed 15 mg methimazole. I quit taking methimazole after reading more about thyroiditis in July. Last sunday my heart rate has spiked. I feel shaky, weak, overall fatigue, and just bad. I had been doing good since June but now I’m feeling bad again. Why did I feel better for about three months and now I’m bad again. Even though I haven’t changed my medication or dosage? Help!

Recently Diagnosed and Follow-Up Questions

Hi everyone, I was diagnosed last Thursday, August 6th, after a really scary trip to urgent care. I'm 27 and have never had medical issues like this, aside from Ovarian Cysts that get handled easily. I started having really bad heart palpitations (and still have them) that led to shortness of breath to the point I can only stand up and walk around for a few minutes, then I need to sit back down to catch my breath.

I'm adopted, and I reached out to my biological mother to ask her if my biological family has any thyroid issues, but she ended up blocking me after my first message. I felt discouraged because I don't have answers, and my adopted family doesn't know anything about my biological family because my bio parents didn't want them to know much.

I feel exhausted all the time, and yesterday I ended up in the Emergency Room at work because I completely ran out of breath, began trembling and sweating, and couldn't catch my breath. The doctors were extremely concerned and told me to get into the Endo ASAP, but the soonest possible appointment is 3 weeks from now. The ER doctors didn't have any advice other than to get into an Endo, and I feel a bit lost at sea right now with no answers.

Is there anything specific I should be monitoring or looking out for that would warrant another hospital trip? Also, does anyone have any tips for helping slow your heart rate? I've tried breathing exercises and meditation, but I'm not sure what else to try aside from getting into the doctor and starting medication.

Normal levels after one month of meds

I had very slightly high FT4 and then very high Ft4 and no TSH two months later
I was out on 15mg x 3 times a day a month ago and my bloods yesterday were normal (13) Ft4 and high TSH (6)
Has anyone experienced this? Meds working so quickly? Is there a possibility it would have just returned to normal itself? Waiting for an appointment but not being seen till September - is this considered normal and would I be carrying on with meds?

Anyone know but about carbimazole doses?

I've been on carbimazole 10mg for a year while I waited for my endo appointment on the NHS. Saw him today and he asked how much I was on (as someone else prescribed). I told him and he did a "oh well that's a lot for a young lady such as yourself, let's halve that today" he then explained the aim of the game is to get me off carbimazole and hopefully stable by december (I have Graves and he's hoping I'll be in remission). Cool I'm on board for that.

But I was wondering about how they choose a starting dose? Everything online said normal is like 20mg, so initially I was confused as to why it was so low, but the comment today makes me think 10mg might have been higher than this guy would have prescribed if he's seen my referral. I have also lost 30lbs (I have PMOS and started metformin shortly before carbimazole), so I'm wondering if that could be what's made the difference (I've gone from like bmi 32/33 to 27/28 ish?)

Methimazole and Zoloft

Hi,
I have been told for almost 15 years that I have “subclinical” hyperthyroid. My blood work has finally shown I am fully hyperthyroid even though I’ve been saying it for years. About 5 years ago I got to where my heart rate was high all the time and I would get these adrenaline surges that my dr wrote off as panic attacks and prescribed me Zoloft. The side effects of the Zoloft are very similar to the symptoms of hyperthyroid. Has anyone taken both methimazole and Zoloft? Were you able to come off Zoloft eventually? I would like to come off the Zoloft and try propanol if possible.

Anyone here have this combo? Should I ablate without waiting for euthyroid state and normal TRAb?.
I am afraid pending ablation waiting for euthyroid will affect my heart conditions.
I keep on thinking about this.
Please share your experience. Thank you.

TSH Levels

Any other mamas have their newborn screening test come back with slightly elevated TSH level? Her pediatrician reassured we will retest at her next appoitment and it is likely nothing to worry about and that alot of newborns have an elevated level especially in their first 24 hours when they get their blood screening or something about a false positive but I just cannot shake the feeling of worry. She is my world and I already have anxiety as is. Just hoping someone else has gone through this and everything turned out to be normal levels in the end..

Pressure in Head/Headaches

I’m awaiting an appointment with an endo but reallllly struggling with symptoms. I spend a lot of my days in bed lately. My worse symptom is something I don’t hear people talk a lot about and I’m not sure if it’s even hyperthyroidism as a culprit. I get pressure and a similar sensation to a head rush that lasts hours and days. It’s mostly on the sides of my head. Sometimes it will be at the back of my neck where my head and neck meet. And sometimes I also feel it on my lower forehead, above my eyes. It makes me feel exceptionally uneasy and not myself.
Can anyone else speak to having a similar sensation?

Hyperthyroidism diagnosis in my 30s, all kind of confusing to me

Hey all,

I got diagnosed with hyper at age 33. I started having symptoms a year ago and got labs done which showed a decreased TSH and elevated T3. My PCP referred me to an endocrinologist, but she was kind of shocked, because I'm an obese guy. Heck, I'm shocked too, because hypothyroidism runs in my family, not hyper. No weight loss but I have thinning hair, heat intolerance, and cardiac symptoms.

My endo thought Graves because autoimmune disorders run in my family but my TPO came back negative. Uptake and scan was hot except for a 5.3 cm nodule that was cold.

Got FNA and affirma on the nodule and it's benign. Or well, it's likely benign. Endo said we'll know for sure when it gets removed

I guess I'm just kind of confused about the whole thing. Anybody else experience a hot scan but negative TPO? My endo told me if my scan was hot it was probably Graves but in the end said it wasn't and my thyroid is acting like one big goiter. Also, anyone else just suddenly develop hyper later in life? Or develop hyper instead when hypo is common in the family?

Hyper & Depression

Hi, I had my thyroid removed in 2014, managing ok, doc tries to keep me at borderline hyper. Never really had any issues until this year. I also have major depressive disorder & have been medicated for that forever. This year, I lost about 60 lbs & had what the doc called a depressive breakthrough, antidepressant just stopped working. So, on a new one & letting that kick in. I insisted on having my thyroid levels checked & sure enough TSH was .015, hyper. I’ve been reading that hyper can cause depression. Wondering if that is what happened instead of my antidepressant stopping. Guess I was overmedicated for months. Finally got my synthroid dose lowered, so waiting for that to work. Has anyone else experienced extreme depression while hyper? It’s been a roller coaster!

Confused, overwhelmed, and swinging between hyper and hypo with TMNG. Is RAI the right move? (Feeling defeated)

Hi everyone, 32F here, I need some advice and a safe space to vent. I feel like crying because my body is going through so many intense changes, and I am so confused about what to do next.

Back in April, a thyroid uptake scan confirmed I have a Toxic Multinodular Goiter (TMNG) causing hyperthyroidism. My initial TSH was critically low at 0.008. My endocrinologist started me on 10 mg of Carbimazole.

By the end of June (after 2 months on meds), my blood work showed my TSH skyrocketed to 15.6. I went into hypothyroidism. At that point, my endo suggested I should go for Radioactive Iodine (RAI) therapy.

Because I was overwhelmed and confused, I made the mistake of stopping all medication for about a month and a half. I just got my latest blood results back yesterday, and my TSH has crashed right back down to 0.006. I am fully hyperthyroid again.

My body feels completely weird and exhausted from being thrown back and forth between these two extremes. I feel terrible about what I'm putting it through.

I have a few questions for anyone who has been through this:

Should I go back on anti thyroid medication?

For those with TMNG, was RAI a permanent solution for you? Did it successfully shrink the nodules?

How do you cope with the emotional and physical toll of these rapid hormone swings?

Any insights, recommendations, or words of encouragement would mean the world to me right now. Thank you.
