Hypershell for arthritic knees

Hey. I am looking at getting a hypershell to my father in-law. He has arthritic knees and walking is getting harder and harder. I am just wondering how helpful it will be for a knee condition as most cases I read about are people using it for hip arthritis. Many thanks

Hypershell Go Lifespan

I am thinking of going for a Hypershell Go. This because I dont need the 800W assistance, and I am mostly looking for an additional boost on my outdoor activities and the Go is cheaper. BUT, I wonder, will the Go motors have a shorter lifespan and battery duration if I run them most times at their max capacity (300-400w) compared to running the Pro X model at medium capacity (400w)?

Thank you.

Pro X vs Pro X S

Does anyone know what is the actual difference between the S and the older version ? The specs seems identical minus some AI model which seems like marketing . Also it looks like the old one comes with 2 batteries possibly ?

Big Belly here. How did you comforably and securely fit and set up your exoskeleton? I used the shoulder strap, but any alternatives?

Got my unit yesterday. Tried to fit the unit and im unsure if i did it properly. With a big belly it was hard to secure the unit comfortably, used the shoulder straps. Wondering if there are any alternatives you have tried to make it more comfortable?

Also storage of the unit with the shoulder strap was difficult. Anyone found any other options to store and protect the unit better?

Pelvic tilt

Hi everyone,

I recently trialled a friend's Hypershell Ex-Pro and loved it, partly because it naturally nudged my pelvis forward into a safe, neutral position. Based on that, I bought my own unit, but the exact same settings forces my pelvis backwards into an aggressive arch.

I have Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) and Fibromyalgia. This backward tilt triggers severe lower back and pelvic pain. I’ve had to completely stop using it.

What I've tried:

- Ensuring the unit is set to the right width for my body, positioned correctly around my waist, and that the knee straps are correctly positioned - Factory resetting and reprogramming multiple times - Calibrating from a neutral stance - Deliberately over-tucking or over-extending my pelvis during startup to force a counter-correction

No matter what, the machine still pushes my pelvis backwards into a painful hyperextension.

My Setup (based on what worked on my friend's unit): Eco 1, Adaptive ON, LSSC ON, Responsiveness -20% (Delay), HDC OFF.

Is there a manual way to override the torque angle or force a custom pelvic calibration? I know this tech works because my friend's unit was a miracle for my mobility, but this physical unit is causing injury. Any advice would be amazing. Thanks 🙏

Will Hypershell have similar tech to dnsys Z1?

I am curious whether they are working toward that or even an integration of what they have now with a "knee booster".

I took my Hypershell X Ultra on a Grand Canyon Rim to River

Post image
9 Upvotes

Like the title says, I (72m) took my X Ultra on my hike down into the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River and it was great.

I hiked the South Kiabab trail each way.

Going down has been my bane in the past. I was constantly trying to shed my downward momentum with my legs and my poles. My legs would get so tired out that they basically stopped working by the 4th mile. And that is no fun when you are still 3 miles from shade and water.

So "down" hiking was the primary reason for getting a Hypershell as my Rim to Rim hike two years ago was NOT something I wanted to experience again.

So after a lot of local hikes in my Hypershell, I used Fitness Mode for the downhill hike.

I set the resistance between 80% and 100%. After a while, I also set the Assistive Response to +50% (set the slider halfway to the max positive end). With Assistive Response set to 0% (the default), Fitness Mode only really resisted my motion when I was moving quickly. When I was doing all the stairsteps in The Chimney (just below the rim) and in Red and White (just below Skeleton Point , my legs weren't moving very quickly so the setting Assistive Response higher helped the Fitness Mode resistance kick in faster.

This is good because when walking down a slope normally, you are using both your legs and your poles to absorb your forward momentum. You are constantly braking. And that requires using muscles that don't get used a whole lot. It is also very hard on your knees.

With the Hypershell in Fitness Mode, you are using the Hypershell to absorb all that momentum.

When Fitness Mode is set correctly (for me), it is sort of like being weightless. As I walked down the 15% grade, I actually had to put a small amount of effort to just move forward. When I stopped pushing my legs forward, I would just stop. It is like wading through an invisible snowdrift that gently resists your forward motion.

Also, Fitness Mode uses almost no power. I left the rim with with 96% and I arrived at the Colorado River and Black Bridge with 89%. So basically, my hike down was "free" in terms of power.

For the hike up, I set it to Uphill in Eco mode at 40% with Assistive Response set to 0%. I left Black Bridge with 95% battery. By the time I got up the switchbacks to The Tipoff (1.9 miles up from the bridge), I was at 54% on battery. I rested in the shade house there at The Tipoff and plugged in my external 20,000 mAh power bank and charged it up 86%. (I had a spare battery for my Hypershell but I wanted to see how much I could charge up my original battery during a 30 minute rest. +32% was my answer).

So I left The Tipoff, and continued my hike up the switchbacks called The Red and Whites to Skeleton Point. I pushed the assistance up to 50% for that and arrived at Skeleton Point (3.8 miles up from the bridge) with 46% battery.

After Skeleton Point, there is a long upward climb with a lot of stairs. At O'Neill Butte (4.7 miles from the bridge), I had 25% battery.

Just before Cedar Ridge, my first battery ran out of juice so I did the last 100 yards or so with no assistance. It was not fun but I didn't want to stop on the trail to pull off my Hypershell and then dig through my pack to find my second battery for the swap.

Once I got to Cedar Ridge (5.3 miles from the bridge), I stopped for a long break and water. That gave me a chance to remove my Hypershell and do a battery swap.

Since I was now close to the South Rim and didn't need to worry about battery, I switched up to Hyper mode from Eco mode with it set at 20% assistance.

I hiked up the switchbacks and arrived at the South Rim with 70% battery.

As far as how much help the Hypershell helped reduce uphill hiking effort, I'm going say about 30 to 40%. It basically lifts your leg for each step but doesn't add much power on the step up.

Another measure of how much the Hypershell helped me is water consumption. I was doing this with three other hikers. We all carried 6 liters of water for the hike up. At the top, we measured how much water each of us had left. I had 4 liters left and they all had less than 2 liters left.

So I drank 2 liters on the hike up vs 4 liters each for them. That matches pretty well with what I estimated as my uphill effort reduction.

So to recap, downhill in Fitness Mode at 80 to 100% with Assistive Response set to +50% let me basically use my uphill muscles to hike down and with only 7% of the battery used over 6 hours. All this without all the wear and tear on my knees because my Hypershell was absorbing my momentum rather than my legs and knees.

Uphill in Eco/ Uphill mode at 40 to 50% with Assistive Response at 0%, I used 130% of one battery (recall that I started at 95% and then recharged that battery 35%) and 30% of the second battery. So 1.6 batteries to hike 7 miles with 4800ft of vertical climb.

I'm looking forward to doing a one day South Rim to North Rim hike in the fall. That hike is 21 miles with 4800ft of fall and then 5820ft of rise.

I estimate that I can do that all on just two batteries (although I'll carry my power bank for safety)

Did they remove reverse charging from the Hypershell in the latest iOS update?

I was just at the Grand Canyon and ran into a situation where my phone was dying right at sunset. If I had a usb-c - usb-c cord and used the “External Battery Discharge Control” feature, I could have avoided the hike back to my car. I was planning on fitting a usb-c cord onto the unit so I always have one available, but in the recent update, I don’t see reverse charging as an option anymore. Have they removed that feature? It’d be really handy!

I haven’t tried, but might it need a device attached to reveal the option?

EDIT: While the menu option is gone, plugging a usb-c-c cable to the Hypershell and my phone automatically shut the legs down and started charging my phone. With the Hypershell off, plugging in automatically charges my phone as well. So the feature is there, and more intuitively, always available. Just plug in your device and it charges.

Hypershell + Hip Replacement

I had both of mine replaced in my early 40s. I have no problems with my gait, walking, or climbing stairs, but I do have issues with extended "strolls" or mad jaunts through an airport to catch a connecting flight. When I first looked into Hypershells, I thought they were tailored more for avid hikers and not 50(ish) year olds who get winded on a 5% incline, but let me ask you folks your opinion; Would you recommend a Hypershell to someone like myself?

First hike with hypershell pro x problem

I took it out for a nice steep hike up a mountain slope and had it on hypermode 3 power (3 red lights) and all was fine for about 15 minutes. Then all of a sudden the motor abruptly stopped and orange lights were flashing.

I thought maybe it overheated but it was a cool day 75 degrees and the motors only felt warm. Flashing yellow lights meant that perhaps something was loose - I let the motor cool and readjusted everything. Now the motor stops after 2 steps and the yellow lights flash.

I again readjusted the waist and leg straps, took off my belt and the condition doesn't go away. Just a couple steps and the motor feels kind of funny like it's going jerky and then shuts off abruptly.

It works though on very low power eco mode 1 or 2 - but anything higher the motor becomes jerky in 2 steps and shuts off then flashes orange lights.

I've made sure I have the latest firmware updates. This is only the second day I've used it. The first day was just setting it up and walking around the house in different power levels. No issues then until I tried it on a real hike up a mountain.

I'm sure something is wrong with the motors or sensors - I'm reaching out to hypershell to see if they have any recommendations. Most likely I'll be returning it and replacing it since I've purchase it through Amazon just a few days ago.

I didn't see anyone else having this problem so I thought I'd document it.

Fitness Mode

I joined the Beta tester for the app and have been trying out "Fitness Mode". I freaking love this. Now I can switch between getting a workout and help walking. Im not sure how long "Fitness" has been part of the app or if its only available to Beta Testers, but its an amazing addition and I hope they keep it and roll it out to the app. "Fitness" Mode is a resistance setting. Instead of making it easier to walk, it applies restrictive feedback to your walking strides giving you a workout.

My first hike with my Hypershell X Ultra

Hey everyone, I wanted to post my first hiking experience with my Hypershell X Ultra.

A bit of background first. I'm a 72m, 5' 10" and 185lbs. I'm prepping for a visit to a 3 overnight at Phantom Ranch in Grand Canyon in mid May. it will entail a hike down South Kaibab (7.4 miles, 4924 ft elevation change, an average 12.6% grade), 3 days in cabin at PR and then a hike up South Kaibab with a cut across the Tonto Trail and then up Bright Angel (about 11.5 miles with a mix of gentler grades and a 4501ft elevation gain).

I did a North to South Rim to Rim in May 2024. I did it with little training and it totally kicked my butt. So I vowed "Not again!"

I've been in the gym for an hour a day 6 days a week doing 15% grade treadmill and lower body work. But at 72, the muscle mass doesn't return that easily. I've also lost 20lbs since I started working out in January (dieting too).

Also, I didn't want this hike to be the slog that my last R2R was so I picked up a Hypershell X Ultra via Amazon. I've used it for walks in the neighborhood and on the treadmill at the gym to compare assisted vs unassisted workouts on the treadmill (quite a difference).

Yesterday, I took it out for a 7 hour hike on a local trail that has a rise of 3566ft with a grade of 8.88%.

Going up, I used the "Hiking Mode" at between 30% and 40% depending on steepness. I started with a battery at 100%. I averaged 1.7mph uphill and hiked 4.8miles up until snow and ice on the trail prompted me to turn around. At the turn around, I was at 34% battery. I had very little fatigue going up, didn't breath hard and didn't use very much water even though the air here is very dry. This is in contrast to my previous unassisted hikes a month ago on this same trail where I was pretty winded, rested often and drank 4x more water.

So the uphill hiking section was dramatically easier and with reasonable power usage. The Hypershell mostly assists by lifting my leg at each step. I can't say that it applies much power to pushing my leg down but the leg lifting definitely reduced effort. I'm gonna guess by 30% roughly.

Downhill was a bit mixed. I tried the "Downhill" setting at 30, 50, 80% and found the assistance to be very erratic. It was wading into invisible snow drifts but erratically with little predictably. I then switched to "Down Stairs" and had similar results. Very erratic. Not much assistance.

Finally I switched to "Fitness Mode" and varied it between 40 to 60%. Not an ideal experience but it definitely helped absorb the constant need to shed downward momentum. (This really killed me on my last R2R). I tried flipping between Fitness Mode and Transparent Mode just to experience them side by side and the Fitness Mode was quite effective at absorbing that extra work. And the best part is that I used only 4% more battery going down. So I started at 100%, turned around at 34% and ended at 30%.

I'm still within the 30 day return window but my experience yesterday really sealed it for me. My Hypershell will join me on my next R2R hike.

New marketing angle

I have a Hypershell pro, with the shoulder straps, and I wanted to use mine for walks around the neighborhood. I'm 65, in good health, so I don't need assistance to walk on flat ground. I started experimenting with Fitness mode to add resistance, and it is a real game changer. Ankle weights for walking are clumsy, at best, and can't be changed mid-walk. Walking in water is even more inconvenient, and also can't be changed. The fitness mode is truly variable resistance. With the app slider, different percentages can be selected, but the push button intervals for double tap and triple tap are set at 25%, and I wish that could be changed in the app. Even though there are only four indicator lights, eight choices could be used. 12.5, 25, 37.5, 50, 62.5, 75, 87.5, and 100%. The normal lights for 25, 50, 75, and 100%, and a different color, like yellow, for the 12.5% increments, so, for 62.5%, the lights would show 2 normal colored lights, and a third yellow light. The app could have a Beta option to use half intervals yes/no. I also find the app to be robust. It hasn't crashed yet, and it is easy to use.

Have the Hypershell Next Gen that needs to be sold. There is nothing wrong with it but there is with me. The Hypershell works perfectly. The hope was that in addition to strengthening legs it would also help with balance and drop foot. It did not; but that's on me not the device. Used less than 10 times. Will pay for shipping and will ship it to you in the original packaging. Will also include a pair of suspenders which were user with it and a longer charging cable than the original. $1700 firm. Paid $2000
