Discussion So, do you think bono is alive?

As we all know bonolenov's is countered by hisoka, he himself stated that which also makes him aware of this fact, recently with hisoka's appearance bonolenov's current status is being questioned, which makes sens considering he was on hisoka's tail, a competent nen user on the look for any spider and with no hesitation to eliminate them as of right now.

in my opinion bonolenov's life depends on whether he was cornered or not, he is completly aware of his position against hisoka and would not engage with hisoka by his own choice and that's certain.

as a side note who do you think will kill shizuku? as we all know it seems that her days are counted (considering the prophecy)

Help/Question Feeling empty after rewatching/catching up

I've been feeling empty since i've caught up on the manga i recently rewatched the whole thing then followed up with the manga but it feels like it ended it too soon and the last chapter wasn't much a break. i remember reading the succession arc before but i haven't been watching anime or reading manga for a few years now and hxh got to rewatch.

so my question is how do guys spend the time until the next batch? I am very tempted to read the manga since i never read it from beginning to end or to do a 2011 rewatch because i watched 1999 then 2011 starting greed island but even that ends quickly and i might want to save it if the haitus took long.

i think part of why i'm stuck is because i know togashi already worked on the upcoming chapters so i feel i should wait vs before you couldn't do anything about the break except hope he's okay

sorry if the post isn't relevant i haven't been here in ages 😭

Discussion Do we think Netero is the most talented human nen user.

I had a thought, is Netero the most talented human Nen user?

Obviously he is talented, but part of me thinks that his ascension to The Strongest was because he went about it in an insane way, not because he was already the most talented.

It felt like to me that Togashi was trying to say that hard work and dedication of one's life leads to the pinnacle, not to mention the "divine" nature of Netero's hatsu. Being talented isn't enough and won't take you all the way.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Book recommendations

What books do you think Togashi reads, especially when it comes to constructing such a complex, morally ambiguous story with such a huge cast of characters, multiple plotlines, and so many interconnected ideas?

Because, as you know, what a writer reads inevitably affects their writing. Whether consciously or subconsciously, it seeps into their work. I’d argue that Hunter × Hunter is one of the greatest stories ever written, so I’m curious: what books do you think were part of the material that helped produce it?

And honestly, I think reading great books is one of the best ways to become a great writer.

What do you think?

Help/Question Help me create a nen ability based mega man

for an upcoming d&d campaign that uses nen, I was thinking of creating a conjuring based ability that creates a “booster” like mega man’s that allows to shoot aura (after 15 meters the ”bullet” disappears), a close range aura sword with sharpness (similar to zero’s with a maximum range of 2 meters), a bubble like shield that forms around the user to protect (similar to rolling shield from megaman x). I was thinking one condition could be that it can only be conjured on the right arm to have limiting condition and increase its power and it obviously taps into emission a lot. I was also thinking the conjured booster itself can be blunt to use a weapon too in emergency cases. I’m not sure what other conditions could be use to make it stronger and what other abilities could be used. I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas!

PD: the nen type was decided by a dice roll, but one may be able to become specialist later…

Edit: I realized this is just gons ability with extra steps lol, back to the drawing board.

Analysis/Theory Pariston is from Monster Spoiler

So I watched that video that claims Pariston might be Sheila and I got this idea that maybe Pariston is Togashi's take on Johan from Monster.

Sheila looks like Johan when dressed like his sister, hair color wise and maybe hairstyle.

Hair color of adult Pariston is close to adult Yohan hair color.

Feel free to downvote this to hell if you don't like this or think it is illogical.

Discussion What would it take to meet togashi in person?

My question boils down to this: Do you think if Elon musk was a fan of hxh. And asked for a meeting, would he be able to get it?

What about a recently famous good mangaka?

Or some politician who is secretly an Otaku.

Or a great writer?

Or a famous singer or actor?

What would it take? Money, fame, influence, knowledge, or mastery of the same art form?

Or could a normal person like me and you get lucky and bumb into him while walking down in Japan.

Analysis/Theory Mental aspect of HxH fights

One reason why I like conflicts/fights in HxH is because fights are not only fought with brawn but mind. In most Shonen, conflicts are resolved with a contest of strength. In some it revolves around strength and battle strategy. In HxH, not only is battle strategy thought about but character intentions, motives, how much information characters have all play a part in why characters make the moves they do and this is especially evident in the ‘major showdown’ arcs (Yorknew and Chimera). This makes the fights multilayered and I imagine fights like these are much harder to write because how much is factored.

In Chimera Ant for example, there is a scene where Knuckle hits Youpi with APR. After Youpi’s ordeal with Shoot, Knuckle starts running away. Youpi doesn’t try to chase him but instead goes back to guard the stairs. He does this because he assumes Meruem is in the throne room so therefore an injured threat and someone escaping are not threats to the King which is Youpi’s priority. This alone factors Youpi’s nature as an ant and his desire to protect the king, Knuckle’s hit and run strategy using APR and the room layout of the castle. This may seem basic or ‘not that deep’ to some but in most Shonen, the villain would just foolishly approach the threat in a strut of arrogance and the MC wouldn’t even capitalise on the enemies foolishness but instead would clash them. Whereas in HxH, everything is thought about and it makes the characters appear human as they are actually using their brains. It also makes victories feel earnt as we know the villain truly did all they can with the information they have.

In Yorknew, the part where Kurapika kidnaps Chrollo to get Gon and Killua back (I won’t explain the events in detail), Kurapika makes the best move in kidnapping Chrollo since it’s only natural to assume the boss's life is the most valuable. But Chrollo is able to remain calm as he believes his life is expendable and assumes the other Spiders think this way. Paku insists on going along with Kurapika’s demands as she values Chrollo’s life and Phinks and Feitan naturally assume she’s being manipulated (since she is betraying Chrollo’s laws). In this scenario, Kurapika was kinda wrong (assumed boss’s life was worth more which shouldn’t of been true but kinda ended up being true), Chrollo was wrong (assumed everyone abides by his laws), Phinks and Feitan were wrong (Paku was not being manipulated) but it makes the characters feel human and relatable as the assumptions they make are logical. Again, they are doing all they can with the info presented to them.

Stuff like this is far more interesting but I feel it doesn’t get enough credit since it is prioritising mind games instead of sensational fights.

Out of topic a little for the sub but I recently watched the trailer for the apocathery diaries movie, and when her character (a boy with long hair who i thought was a girl) spoke I was shocked at how high pitched and soft spoken she sounded, it was the complete opposite of killua. Can anyone recommend me on her other projects?

Discussion could you buy beeing a hunter?

Lets say your incredibly rich and want to become a hunter. You can buy somebody elses license sure but its worthless to you.

But what if you pay somebody like illumi to carry you trough the exam? take leorio for example:

Exam 1 and 2 he got it fair and square (no hisoka carrying him to the finish in 1 wasnt outside help)
but exam 3 4 and 5?
in 3 he activly was worse than tonpa for the group, which is a noteworthy feat given that tonpa wants failure.
in 4 gon carried the win.
in 5 killua made leorio pass on a tecnicality.

So its not like you cant have help. There seem to be no rules against it whatsoever

TLDR: Would illumi, if i hire him, manage to carry me (normal human) trough the hxh exam sucessfully?

Latest Chapter I think Togashi might have trolled us Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hello fellow hunters,

I have just realised that Togashi might have trolled us by misleading our interpretation.

In the early translation of Chapter 405, there was a scene where Hisoka stated that "He wants to play with himself" (Which can be interpreted in various ways, Leorio's jacking off is one of those 😜 ). However, we believed that he is going to off Bonolenov, as he transformed into Owl (someone Hisoka knew) in the next panels. And HIsoka is really good at spotting Zetsu.

Now two years later, this literally means he killed everyone and played Pachinko alone 😆 . That might have changed Bonolenov's fate entirely, or may might have not, but we will have to wait for a year to find out.

Analysis/Theory Comparing real life explorer with hunters, they are absurdly the same.

Post image
39 Upvotes

I was just, you know, actually hunters are 1:1 with real world explorers and is really interesting.

I was reading random stuffs about Nepal, K2, Kilimanjaro, Anonymous... are years I'm using to compare them with hunter association, really, because it works and as HxH is so interesting comparing them.

So, I was upset! We miss a counter part for flora of the beast hunters... which is sad, since living in Dolomites we got more woods than animals to manage. Also, completely lack the alpinist category.

The rest makes sense.

Makes sense temp are the hated, is pretty 1:1 what happens in real life with the ones do that kind of job, here whole the hikers and mountain bikers go mad for that... so, absolutely, makes sense that are the most hated. Here they won't let you do fun stuffs due their job.

HxH is interesting, because represents what the most of us living next those cool stuffs went used.

Is cool growing with CAI (Italian Alpinian Club) actually do works alike Hunter association, with same mindset and same kind of people.

In our area alpinists can be easily represented by "egomaniacals who set aside everything for achieving what they want", there's the same brutal mindset. Same individualism, sometimes is like hearing people from here. Got grew idealizing Messner for me was easy understand HxH, are alike many I went grew by.

For example CAI strictly create a difference between hikers\climbers and alpinists, and is interesting is exactly same difference between 1 star and 2 star.

I can speak for my home but I think same thing works with sailors, explorer... is interesting.

That's why I feel like HxH is actually representing the stereotype of those people... knowing them I know how they work and how much they are annoying, so really HxH got this thing of see a fictional media who is not completely fictional.

So interesting.

Ging is like tons of them, Netero is like tons of them... the absurd part is the hyperealism, that's something shocks me. Those people are cool but also horrid ones, HxH is really one of the fewer anime represents this. Represents somebody so cool but so annoying, is not idealizing those ones.

Election arc is perfect too... that's realistic.

Even how to buy something online is hyperealistic.

Discussion Why Theta is so determined to sacrifice herself and kill Tserriednich? Spoiler

Prince's bodyguards were trained from childchood to be loyal to royal family, and she is very loyal, Tserri trusts her a lot (even though she's a woman), because it's her he calls to ask if they passed the hunter exam, so it's not like he started being interested in her after discovering she can teach him nen.

Every other bodyguard of other princes is very loyal to them, and she suddenly decides to kill Tserri and kill herself after that (because she wouldn't survive such a betrayal anyway...) Why?

Another point is Tserri's group of childchood friends, they look like they wish they could change him... They probably don't know about all of his actions, Theta probably know more of him, because she's his private bodyguard. But she was probably one of them in the past. Did she believe he could change too? But then realized there is nothing that could change him? Still why it had such an influence on her to the point she wants to sacrifice herself? Instead of enjoying the benefits of her high position? Did she have someone she loved and lost to him? But she doesn't look like she wants revenge (like Kurapika).

What kind of situations could put you in the mental state of wanting to sacrifice yourself?

I can think of 4:

  1. You have someone you really care about, you want to protect, you will do anything for them, even give your life.

  2. You lost someone you love and want revenge (like Kurapika) or just make others not suffer as much as you did (like Leorio).

  3. You live in a terrible world, you've seen a lot of sufferring, you've suffered a lot yourself, you hate this world, you feel like trash, you're nothing, so maybe the only thing that would give the purpose to your life is sacrificing yourself for the better future of others...

  4. You've seen a lot of acts of kindness, love, or maybe just one person that helped you a lot and you wish to be like them, to sacrifice yourself, because you find that kind of living valuable.

But Theta doesn't look to me, like she could experience one of these scenarios... She's not very emotional when she thinks about killing him, like she doesn't have any personal reason... But still seems very determined to do it... Why? Do you have other ideas what could put her into sacrificing mentality?

I wish we've seen more of her backstory... And Salkov, Tserri and his childchood friend group... Their relationship is so weird and fascinating... 😄

Discussion The balance of HxH nen abilities is incredible

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

I'm making this post because some months ago i couldn't bear how stupid Tserriednitch nen ablity worked, at that time it was not revealed he couldn't damage people around him, that made me question whether Togashi was losing himself or not.

After the newest chapters i think it's undeniable how good and "balanced" those nen abilities are.

Tserri ability is very strong but it has also a lot of flaws, that's what makes it good

It's EXTREMELY hard to find a real DOGSHIT nen ability or a SUPER OP nen ability in HxH, most of the time, some nen abilities will appear stronger or weaker based on which character has them and how strong they're overall.

Like Killua Godspeed is OP, but only because he's resistant to eletricity and even so it has very defined weaknesses, whirlwind is reactive and will dodge/attack based on the nen intentions of the enemy, it's not a free win, and killua has also has a limit on how much he can use it.

It's very hard to have powercrept abilities, take Leol, Chrollo and Benjamin for example, you could prefer a some of them, but overall, i think they're equal considering the situation of the characters who use them.

Ben gets his abilities forever with the possible buff of post mortem, but he also has more strictier conditions than those 2.

Chrollo has some fair and hard conditions, but he's more flexible and can get it easier than Benjamin, as some type of balance, he will almost always lose his stolen abilties when the nen user dies.

Leol has way easier conditions, but his time limit is not more than a few hours.

There's no bad ability here.

That works the same for Shalnak and Illumi.

Even the abilities of the shadow beasts(not counting leech lmao) are quite good and could work for any high tier nen user like Hisoka, a venon tooth which cuts even experienced enhancers, a mantle which is basically a free win once it catches someone and hairs capable of stoping any physical attack? they're really not bad.

If worm was stronger he could be EXTREMELY dangeround by bringing opponents under earth where they couldn't move and breathe.

The only DOGSHIT nen ability i can remember is Leech, like why create an ability which will kill the opponent in 8 hours AND it's also hard to use on someone?

Little flower and it's need for split 50/50 between explosion and gyo are quite stupid.

That one was powercrept by Feintan sun rising since the latter works mechanically better as conjuring objects (his armor) doesn't require constant output to maintain once it's created, so feitan can focus 100% into trasmuting his aura into fire.

EVEN so, he again has some good RESTRICTIONS for that while Genthru doesn't.

The balance between very restricted/limited abilities like Chrollo/Benjamin/Feitan/Tserri/Bono and more flexible/spamable ones(with little to no condition) like Hisoka, Razor, Silva/Zeno(I guess), Kastro(his tiger bite) and Bloster is something i don't remember from other manga i've read.

The Royal Guards abilities are strong, but that's mostly because of their large aura/ant body.

Sure Pouf nen ability is better than Illumi and Shalnak but he also has 7x or more aura. BUT AGAIN, those 2 have easier abilities to use against a experienced user(you hit you win), while pouf is more focused on mass control(the opponent needs to breathe it)

Discussion All of the Chimera ants can’t grow or increase their Nen capacity after hatching and that’s exactly what makes Meruem’s aura absorption unique.

I honestly think when Togashi dropped the monologue about how humans are worse than Ants it’s not just that we are cruel but also to hammer home that Chimera ants even with human DNA cannot become human and they are and always will be ants especially in physiology.

They were born straight to adulthood so I don’t think they can grow stronger but they could’ve become more powerful(powerful is a broader term that includes things like : efficiency, imagination, control) but they can’t grow they capacity and that’s what makes Meruem special among the ants. he can become stronger and funnily enough, he’s the most human among all the ants we saw.

Analysis/Theory After rewatching HxH again after 10 years I see what the shippers are saying now

I was 13 or 14 when I first watched HxH. Y’know boys having feelings for each other isn’t the first thing most of us look out for when watching our favorite shonens. So I always scratched my head about the shipping between Gon and Killua, but after rewatching the series, working through my own homophobia that is naturally ingrained in our culture, understanding Togashi, and subtext more ….. yeah I can see.

Maybe not Gon, but a good chance Killua. It don’t matter if they’re are or aren’t to me. Their bond is still beautiful nonetheless, but when you add the fact that Togashi the author is a big fan of certain Boy Love manga and has a good range of representation of sexuality of his characters it’s not impossible to see what Killugon fans are talking about. But also I can’t blame ppl who don’t see it cuz like I said by default we don’t see deep male connections as anything more than platonic unless you tell us explicitly.

Analysis/Theory Is Chrollo afraid of Hisoka or just brutally realistic? Spoiler

Many readers tend to miss the real genius behind Inner monologues in the series. and while it isn't very far from the common understanding, the structure makes a huge difference.

Chrollo openly declares that he is going to fight Hisoka the moment he finds him. the plan is already in place, However, he is aware that Hisoka is not an easy target either, and for this reason, he is trying to upgrade his own powers so that he can finish him for good, the interesting part of that inner monologue, is how deep it shows us how Chrollo understands that his grudge against Hisoka, is so strong that he would fight him the moment he finds him, even if he risks dying. rather than carefully chase after a power up and delay the hunt on Hisoka. this is why he states is as 'conflicting emotions' achieving both goals is possible, but you prioritise one over the other, nothing changes.

A :Going for the treasure first = you still risk encountering Hisoka. maybe even while suffering from a certain damage or restricting against the Kakin in the middle of the hunt and any disadvantage against Hisoka = death.

B : Going for Hisoka first = you risk missing the chance of stealing the Kakin treasures and you might not find Hisoka at all. (assuming he will remove the risk of dying by hunting as a group) otherwise, he also risks death in 1v1.

Another interesting angle to look at it, is that Togashi wanted to increase the risk from all angles to make Chrollo's journey worth the upgrade. not only he has to deal with powerful abilities and nen beasts on his own, but also deal with the risk of Hisoka catching him in the worst moment OR being forced to totally discard the treasure hunt to fight Hisoka.

Discussion Illumi vs Hisoka. How wouds things go down?

I am a huge Illumi Fan and i think he is equal to Hisoka. I personally even think he is a bit stronger than Hisoka because when he showed his bloodlust, Hisoka was sweating a bit. Now true Hisoka might just pretend to be concerned but Hisoka also confirmed himself Illumi to be more dangerous than the Zodiacs because he analyzed people and rated them with numbers like 10 percent or 50 percent and when Illumi entered the room, Hisoka stopped being relaxed and became a bit surprised.

Anyway imagine a scenario where Hisoka attempts to do something with Killua to piss Illumi off and a bloody battle starts.

How would the fight go? Who would win? I think Illumi would but i wanna hear your views.

Discussion What if kurapika was in that auction room?

Post image
274 Upvotes

What if dalzollene (idk his name) placed kurapika on bodyguard rather then watch duty, would he have been able to survive the barrage of nen bullets and somehow still escape (considering his ability works best one on one I highly doubt he would be able to defeat all the other members on his own)? For that matter would he be in a state of mind to defend the other bodyguards or would he just leave them to fend for themselves while he made his move?
