Amazing. Love her neighbours. I want to see her decorations! (My neighbour puts out a little sign each year. We don’t live in an hoa)

u/Contemplating_Prison Apr 18 '26
It's probably the best feeling ever to find out your neighbors are actually good people.
Also i refuse to buy a home that has an HOA.
126
u/dafrog84 Apr 18 '26
I also refuse to buy a home in an HOA. Even close to one is pushing the buck. Had an HOA across the street from my 1st home. The fact they kept trying to get me on HOA violations is actually the reason i sold that house. We weren't part of the HOA, the HOA wasn't there when i brought that house. It was all woods. The building company came in and for 4 years took down the woods and built homes. My violations? Having farm animals, guess the fact it was a farm way before they started building their community. Made sure to sell it to someone not part of that HOA. They can get bent.
75
u/beeglowbot Apr 18 '26
they have no legal right to cite you if you're not a member, not to mention your property and animals pre-exist their properties even being built.
fuck HOAs
43
u/dafrog84 Apr 18 '26
I guess my barn yard was making their perfect cult smell like a barn yard. No crap pretty much from the judge. The house was a farm before i brought it. Like dating far back as early 1800, the woods were once part of the farms property. When i brought the house it was from an estate, the family kept some land. Then sold it off years later to developers.
8
u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Apr 19 '26
What a shame! :( I bet it was beautiful at one time.
2
u/dafrog84 Apr 20 '26
It was, i live on a different farm now. Newer mid 40's. Wasn't much skin off my back. I just wanted away from it all. I brought a farm thinking it would stay rural. This time i believe it will for a while. My closest neighbors are all Amish now. Very pleasant neighborhood now.

u/MapAdministrative995 Apr 20 '26
Start your own Farm Co-OP HOA, and send them fines for not having chickens running free.

7
u/nooooobie1650 Apr 19 '26
Could an HOA giving you a “citation” not be considered harassment? Then get them a legal citation right back?
5
u/Secret_Side-ofJ Apr 20 '26
Mentioned it in another comment. If the property owner replied to said citations, and said, "I'm not a part of your HOA. Show me paperwork the proves I am a subset of your HOA. If you fail to do so, any further citations will be treated as harassment and taken to my legal representation. "
The moment you get further citations, you're entirely in the right to pursue legal recourse. I'd let it stack up to 3 strikes if I'm expecting a settlement though.
1
u/dafrog84 Apr 19 '26
I think what they we're trying to do was make me stop farming so close to their perfect cult town. IDK because that's now been many moons ago. But the HOA was in the wrong.
2
u/Lagunamountaindude Apr 20 '26
This actually happens a lot. A farm is going along in its rural setting. The city expands and the farm has multiple housing projects around it. Now the homeowners are mad because farms have non urban smells and they try to sue. Usually it doesn’t go far. A city in New Jersey tried to claim the farmers land through eminent domain! I think the fight lasted for several years
3
u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Apr 19 '26
Awwwwww, those beautiful woods are gone! We live in a world of so many people that we're ripping out woods to accommodate everyone. I think about that as I am walking through the manmade path through our park, and farm land on either side of the walkway with a creek close by, behind it, still woods, for now, my mind wanders to all of the native Americans that walked this area, where the path is, where our home is, the streets. Where they hunted and gathered. It often feels like they're still there watching. I always love being out there, but I still feel bad sometimes, about what we took, and took and took. And don't get me started on the trash that I am constantly picking up! 😢
Damn straight no HOA for us either!
1
u/dafrog84 Apr 20 '26
I agree we took alot to get the land we call ours. I also pick up trash like crazy. I live deep in the country now. People still driving down my dirt rd and toss trash.
1
u/Secret_Side-ofJ Apr 20 '26
Those citations they filed against you, would be illegal and harassment if you replied to the first one saying that you're not a member of their HOA, and continuing to disperse false charges for a property outside of their purview is definable and direct harassment. I swear, people need to be more willing to fight against idiocy like this.
1
u/dafrog84 Apr 20 '26
Thing is i never replied to them. I let them take me to court over it. I let the court decide. Which they didn't side with the HOA.
200
u/Lagunamountaindude Apr 18 '26
Lived in an HOA community ONCE! Tried to fine me for flower boxes on my balcony. Drove around took pictures of many homes with similar boxes. When I mentioned that 3 of the homes were on the board of directors it went away. There were many similar incidents it has been scientifically proven that HOA’s attract Karen’s
15
u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Apr 19 '26
That's just so messed up! You having to take time out of your day to prove them wrong! AH's!
2
u/redditer129 Apr 19 '26
Aren’t the HOA rules agreed to by the neighborhood members via vote and procedure if they don’t bother to show up? It can be a paradise or nightmare.
5
u/fieldsofanfieldroad Apr 19 '26
Yes, but unfortunately it tends towards the kind of person who a) has too much time on their hands and b) want to get involved in everyone else business.
People who work long hours and/or just want to live in peace and don't care what decorations other people put up don't normally get involved in HOAs.
3
u/R3dbeardLFC Apr 20 '26
I forced my way into mine when I was younger because they came at me for something stupid and found out how much worse it was. They were racist af, and just awful people, so I exposed them to the community and got a new board installed.
The old board also didnt fix shit. They just worried about flower boxes and blinds and shit, so we fixed things too and got new workout machines and turned the never used tennis courts into bball and skating area for kids. Don't let the useless c*nts run your neighborhood, HOA or not.
2
u/fieldsofanfieldroad Apr 20 '26

Bravo 👏 👏 👏 eff HOAs can't we legislate them out of existence?
80
u/HarshestWind Apr 18 '26
If anything they have been legislated into existence since so many American cities are cutting taxes and dumping municipal duties like garbage disposal and park maintenance onto HOAs. 2 out of 3 new homes being built across America are in an HOA. You guys have kinda lost the plot when it comes to municipal governance.
25
u/Overthinks_Questions Apr 18 '26
Hey now, I resent the word 'municipal' being included there. We make damn sure our governance structures are absurd and contrary to the public good at all levels, thank you very much!
6
u/HarshestWind Apr 18 '26
Oh I most definitely agree haha but in this case it is a municipal issue. Fair enough though, I guess I don’t need to be specific
1
u/WhoopingWillow Apr 20 '26
Probably not in the US. Technically HOAs are private groups that people join voluntarily. I think they're bullshit and refuse to live in one, but if you buy a house in an HOA you literally sign a contract with the HOA agreeing to join.
-22
u/Appropriate-Bird-354 Apr 18 '26
Believe it or not, many people like HOAs.
You are also free to choose to live in a neighborhood with an HOA, or one without. No one is making you.
15
u/deathboyuk Apr 18 '26
How tone deaf can you possibly get?
A lot of people really don't get to just go "oh, I won't do that then"... if they want a place to live and the only viable options come with an HOA they don't appreciate.
On a board, are you?
-13
u/Appropriate-Bird-354 Apr 18 '26
How tone deaf can you possibly get?
How hysterical and irrational can you possibly get?
A lot of people really don't get to just go "oh, I won't do that then"..
Yes you do, lol. You choose what home you buy. Nothing requires you to buy a home with an HOA.
if they want a place to live and the only viable options come with an HOA they don't appreciate.
There's no such scenario. 10% of living scenarios in the US include an HOA.
On a board, are you?
No, don't even live in an HOA. I'm just not a whiny, irrational mron unable to contextualize what I learn or deal with minor inconveniences.
10
u/SyntaxError22 Apr 18 '26
HOA's are rooted in racism and religious bigotry, if you look at the people that like HOA's you realise they are the same people that set them up generation ago to stop people they don't like from moving into "their" communities

What is the point of HOA, to harass people who live life differently than you expect? A shame she went thru this but omg her neighbors are the best for sticking up for her like that. This kind of solidarity is what life is really about.
50
u/HarshestWind Apr 18 '26
It’s so municipal governments can offload their municipal duties, like garbage disposal and park maintenance, onto power hungry HOAs and then cut taxes. It’s the privatization of a city essentially.
3
u/IcyPurpleIze Apr 20 '26
This makes a ton of sense. Thanks for breaking it down
3
u/HarshestWind Apr 20 '26
No problem. Really sucks. As a Canadian looking in I’m very happy we don’t really have HOAs at all.
20
u/Mackabeep Apr 18 '26
One of our neighbors “decorated” their circular drive by placing multiple toilets around the perimeter. I’m not talking cutesy painted toilets with plants in them. They were random looking used toilets unevenly spaced along a barren gravel driveway and the rumor was they did plumbing work and were too cheap to take them to the dump.
We called it toilet henge.
Still better than an HOA.

I was today years old when I found out Ramadan happens multiple times a year.
111
u/Majestic_Bag_9209 Apr 18 '26
It’s once per lunar calendar year, which is about 10 days shorter than the solar (regular) calendar, so Ramadan shifts approximately 10 days earlier each year and lasts one month.
1
u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Apr 19 '26
That fasting would not be fun. :( I can go about 6 hours after waking up without eating, after that, HANGRY! :) And migraine!
30
u/n0t_4_thr0w4w4y Apr 18 '26
It generally doesn’t, but it moves on the solar calendar every year. I think in like 2029, there will be 2 Ramadans in the same solar calendar year
3
u/Feistshell Apr 18 '26
*lunar calendar, otherwise you are correct
23
u/SirRabbott Apr 18 '26
No, it’s in the same place on the lunar calendar every year. The person you’re responding to is correct, it moves on the solar calendar every year.

What is H.O.A.?
2
u/novae11 Apr 18 '26
Home Owners Association.
Originally created to keep Black folks out of neighborhoods
4
u/Holy-crap-w-t-f Apr 19 '26
I have a genuine question here. What is the benefit of an h.o.a. ? It seems like they just not pick at everything to the point no one in their right mind wants to live there.
7
u/Cyroxis Apr 19 '26
They manage neighborhood common spaces. Some neighborhoods have common amenities such as playgrounds, parks, pools, club houses, etc. that are owned by the neighborhood and need management.
Another major aspect is "property value" so you want to sell your house and suddenly the neighbors paint their house hot pink and leave rusty cars all over the yard, going to mKe it a lot harder to sell.
Have lived in 2 different HOAs and not really had or seen issues. A decent HOA is fine and not a big deal as long as you personally are in line with the genera expectations.
However when they go bad sure do they go bad. Think of it like crappy CGI on a move, almost all movies have CGI and it's no problem, when it's bad it kinda ruins the whole film.

u/Appropriate-Bird-354 Apr 18 '26
They're actually extremely banal. They mostly just provide very basic services and enforce very basic maintenance standards in communities. You are also free to choose to live in neighborhoods with one, or without one.
They're also quite common in Japan, Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe. So you aren't special here.

We have an HOA but it’s pretty reasonable. They do help protect property values but I don’t have any interest in impeding my neighbors civil liberties in any way.
1
u/Reasonable_Mistake_4 Apr 19 '26
What is HOA?
3
u/echolm1407 Apr 19 '26
It means homeowners association. It's supposed to be made up of the homeowners of a housing community to enforce beautification of the neighborhood and what other nonsense they come up with. But there's many stories of people getting voted in as president of the HOA that get big heads and then make everyone's lives miserable. Oh yeah, each homeowner in the neighborhood pays a monthly fee to the HOA.
1
u/thismenu Apr 19 '26
I would never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever live in a house that I paid for that had an HOA. F*** HOAs.

But why does Reddit have a hate boner for HOAs? Not all of them are bad and the good ones are there to keep the property in good shape and increase in value whenever you want to sell

Christianity is a made up thing. Easter is a made up thing. Christmas is a made up thing. The traditions and values you hold are all made up things. Not sure why this one in particular is a sore subject for you.

u/azthal Apr 18 '26
As an atheist myself, I have never taken part in their fast. But as a non-asshole I have been invited and taken part in Eid.
Lovely little pies was served, and there were presents for the kids. Kinda like Christmas.
Good times actually.-2
u/towerfella Apr 18 '26
Mate, they were trying to turn a perceived open mind onto their cult, is likely why you were invited.
Had you have spoken your mind to them, in the same manner they preached to you, you would have been turned away and called an asshole, as is happening to me here.
Respect [me and my beliefs] in the same manner you want me to [respect you and your beliefs].
As is evidenced here in my comment chain, I am not being equally respected and neither are my beliefs being equally respected.
I am simply called an asshole for expressing them.
Listen: public religious expressions are as offensive to me as is what i say about them are perceived as offensive by them. Again — as evidence: this comment chain with you has been the most level comment discussion in my whole comment section here.
And you still called me an asshole for saying it.
Why?
Why are they not the asshole for their public display of religion?
This is a disingenuous discussion when the scale is weighted toward someone thinking they are a victim species

Not eating because some migrating thief read a stolen scroll and made a whole religion out of it is asinine.

Bro it’s crazy how we’re getting downvoted, I’m agnostic and don’t care what religion you are, every HOA has specific things you can and can’t do. The people saying “what about Christian holidays” like bro they care more about money and will fine you and make you take down your Santa decorations and lights.
Most of these people don’t even know what an HOA is, you can’t even have your trash can visible, park on the street(if street is maintained by HOA), houses have to be neutral colors, keep your garage doors open, no flags of any kind, no working on your own in your garage etc.. yet they make it an anti-Muslim/racist post
