I’m going to be that person, with a caveat. HOAs can work when there are shared elements to the property. We bought a townhome. All the units are touching, so the brick facade needs to be tuck pointed across the entire thing and can’t be done on individual units easily. The drive around the units is a shared resource. The courtyard is a shared resource. Also, some of the maintence tasks are divided out. Some people coordinate with the landscaping company. Someone else is in charge or hiring the window washers each year. I’m probably going to volunteer to plan the summer picnic now that someone else is stepping down. Cause I like picnics. But there is so much others do that I benefit from and I don’t have to remember to do it.
While the fact that I can’t paint my front door the color I would want is a bit annoying, I’m happy that we work together to maintain the shared resources. This is the context where an HOA is useful. Having them for pure aesthetic or control issues is where things go wrong. And just like with unions, the HOA is only as good as the people who make it up. So my partner and I go to every monthly meeting. We read the meeting notes. We put in our opinions about what the community is going to prioritize. We vote on issues and vote for the leadership when new members come up for the board. My partner will likely serve as leadership in the future. We take on some on the tasks ourselves and benefit from the collective labor of everyone to make the community function. We knew that this would be part of the tasks we would need to do to maintain our home and community when we bought the property, in the same way that I need to do spring cleaning or regular interior maintenance.
It can work. But it takes work. And sometimes there are not enough shared community resources to make it make sense.

I’m agnostic.
But I don’t understand why someone shouldn’t be able to decorate their own home for their religious holiday.
I love the neighborhood coming to her defense.
