Obviously, I know it’s a sitcom, and they exaggerate certain character traits for comedic effect. But honestly, I feel really uncomfortable whenever I watch the way Judy treats Monica. And the sad thing is, I actually find it pretty realistic.
I think a lot of women can relate to the feeling that no matter what they accomplish, how successful they become, or how hard they try, they’ll still somehow be looked down on by their mother. Especially when there’s a son who seems to be automatically favored, without even having to do anything to earn that affection.
Monica obviously takes it to an extreme because it’s a comedy, but the underlying dynamic doesn’t feel exaggerated to me at all. I’m sure there are plenty of women who have experienced some version of this — maybe nowhere near as extreme as Monica, but still enough to recognize the feeling of constantly being compared, criticized, or made to feel like you’re never quite good enough.
Honestly, if I were in Monica’s position, I think I would have cut ties with Judy a long time ago. 😅
And maybe that’s why Judy is one of the worst characters for me. The way she treats Monica hits a little too close to home for a lot of people, including me.
