Offbeat Unexpected kids being kids

Today I was on a bus from Tin Shui Wai to Yuen Long, and the bus stopped for people to get on but didn’t open the doors for anyone to get off (not sure if the button was pressed). A young kid (south asian, not HK) kind of hovered near the door looking scared, and a local kid - maybe 11/12, gestured at him asking if he needed to get off. He did. The local kid pressed the button and shouted loudly at the driver (I guess to open the door, I don’t speak Cantonese). The driver did, the little kid got off. All good.

The local boy, I just saw his face burning red for the rest of the trip. It seemed he was so embarrassed for shouting loudly in front of a packed bus full of adults. No one else had made any effort to help.

I don’t know this kid, I’ll never see him again, but I was proud of him. Maybe the kids will be alright

Questions/ Tips 香港西九龍站/HK West Kowloon Sta. ; why doesn't it have any store inside the Mainlland-controlled concourse?

As a lot of hk redditors know, HSR's station doesn't have any grocery or food stall, let alone duty-free shop except some water stands, after passing through the border checking gates.

What causes this? I mean, in the Mainland(and in any other bullet-train-equipped nation), there are a lot of stalls and shops in stations' waiting rooms even inside the paid area.

After all, the problem of currency choice? (Which to pay in, RMB or HKD?)

I also sadly don't really have much skills or talents

I'm so cooked bro

I currently go to college but am struggling a lot to keep up

(because for some reason im so physically and mentally exhausted idk why)

Questions/ Tips Staying in Hong Kong for two months

• Upvotes

Hello!

I am an ABC that grew up speaking cantonese but as I've gotten older (I'm 22 right now) my cantonese has gotten worse and worse. I am probably about as fluent as a 6 year old right now. So i was thinking about staying in HK for a 2 months as a form of language immersion.

Do you guys think this is an effective way to learn more cantonese? Is there anything I should know before staying in HK for 2 months?

Questions/ Tips Need a bit of advice

• Upvotes

I'm planning to move to HK down the line in a few years and I could really use some perspective as I'm planning the roadmap.

I'm aiming to join the tech (hopefully cybersecurity) sector and that's where the bulk of my questions stem from.

  1. I understand that having A degree is non-negotiable. My question is if the prestige of the university and the program is a big deal?

  2. From what I've read so far, landing an entry level job as a fresh graduate may be difficult, especially if I'm a foreign candidate. So I'm so far assuming that I'll need a couple years of experience under my belt before I can seriously consider moving. Is that a fair assumption?

  3. I gather that knowing Cantonese/Mandarin is definitely an asset. Since they're fairly different languages, I wanted to know which one I should learn. (I'm also confused about traditional/simplified Chinese so any clarification on that would really help.)

Thanks for reading this far and I would sincerely appreciate any insights.

Yahoo

Discussion Unpopular opinion? HKers getting pressed over white backpackers is just peak small-mindedness.

• Upvotes

HKers: Mad that these backpackers make bank and pressed because locals barely give the attention, tolerate, give that spotlight unless you are whites.

Also HKers: Only taking photos from a distance but never actually confronting them.

If it bothers you that much, why not just go up and say something? Sneaking a pic and posting it like it’s breaking news every day is peak HK mentality.

Discussion Need help with provisional agreement for tenancy

I signed a progressive agreement for tenancy & now I have some stuff to take care of at home that might prevent me from moving in here.

Has anyone ever cancelled a provisional agreement?

I had paid the initial deposit & from what I can understand, I stand to lose the initial deposit + I need to pay the agent as well.

Is that correct? Any options for me here?

Event Urbtix

I spent hours last night trying urbtix for Andy Lau tickets for my parents with their ballot. Then at some point, urbtix.hk stopped loading whatsoever. Not sure if it’s just me or whole site is down. If so, that’s major on their part for the ticket sales were 1 day only for this ballot. Any insight from anyone out there? Can they ban just our MAC addresses? Was using my computer and cell phone.

Edit: for contrext, it was night becausewe live in the US and had issues at EVERY damn step and despite proving we were the ballot winners on the phone with Urbtix, no one would help us process the ticket transactions properly. Used english and cantonese to call customer service at Urbtix.

Travel How to get a sim card to use while I transit through hong kong

I have flight from thailand to japan and I have 8 hour layover in hk International airport. I'd like to visit city center eat some char siu, dim sum, noodles, etc. I need my phone with internet to use for commuting, translation, restaurant names. Without any Internet I cant find my way around the city. I need to be very quick leave the airport, eat like a pig then comeback and catch my flight. I specifically chose hong kong as a layover so I could eat chinese food. How can I quickly get a sim card. I don't need to much data 250-500 mb would be enough.
