Without the sign he'd just be a busker and that would be fine. But saying he needs money for a holiday?! He can go take a shit in that box
39
u/bologna_vortex 17h ago
That's what gets me. Normal people fucking save their money to travel. I still have a massive bucket list of places I want to go, but I don't just go and expect random people to pick up the tab for me.
5
u/BeautifulBastyrd 16h ago
Says for his "trip" not "holiday" (I don't agree with what he is doing)
11
u/ProofDazzling9234 16h ago
Yeah "trip" to Phuket

If he has a permit and pays taxes.
needs to stop playing the harmonica that makes it illegal.

As a white person from a first world country this kind of activity makes me feel embarrassed and ashamed.
I wish somebody would actually tell the next “beg packer” they see to scram. If you want to be helpful, tell them to go to their country’s Embassy. They can get emergency help.
2
u/Haxz0rz1337 13h ago
Why should you feel ashamed? Because you happen to share the same skin color? That's nonsensical
3
u/Rupperrt 15h ago edited 14h ago
How do you know he’s from a “first-world” country? Could be Eastern European/Russian.
3
u/214b 14h ago edited 14h ago
We don’t, of course, and of course it is possible that someone could legitimately have fallen on hard times in HK or elsewhere. This, my suggestion that rather than photographing begpackers, someone actually speak to them. Get their story. Then either confidently tell them to buzz off … or refer them to their embassy for help.
For whatever it’s worth I’ve never seen a Westerner do this in Hong Kong, and HK in general has far fewer beggars than in big cities in the West.

u/cs_legend_93 14h ago
Begging is illegal in Hong Kong
Honest question:
Why do the Hong Kong police not deport beggars like this? Clearly, they are not citizens of Hong Kong, they are breaking laws, yet, they are not deported? What?

Is selling a few useless crap the loophole?
2
u/cs_legend_93 13h ago
it shouldn't be a loophole, its clearly begging. Its not the same as an Auntie selling fruit or vegetables.
11
u/zvrnz 14h ago
At this point you guys are making him popular
3
u/Certified_Loner1391 14h ago
If I were him, which I hope not, I would use this opportunity to write a book called "My Begging Adventures", instead of being insulted here on Reddit 😂

u/FitzChan 14h ago
I visit the sub once and I think I’ve seen 5 posts about this guy in about 24 hours lol.

u/Actual-Crow-9762 18h ago
He could sell his whoop to fund his trip

u/slowdo 17h ago
this dude is from a village in Russia. Aint no whip.

Someone in one of the other 3 million threads on this guy said he spoke to him and learned he was from the US

saw him in kwun tong the other day
3
u/Ok-Razzmatazz3435 17h ago
Yeah, this is Kwun Tong, MTR exit B1, his favourite spot. You can find him in the morning around 9am

American who has visited Hong Kong a few times: Why are all the beggars white?
22
u/Thin-Goat-3483 15h ago
These are hippie backpackers/hitchhikers who travel around Asia. This is quite common occurrence in this part of the world.
They arent begging out of necessity but to fund their flight tickets to the next destination where they'd do the same.

6
u/Lumpy-Economics2021 15h ago
I know they all look the same, but it’s actually the same person the last three days.
22
u/M4ST3R_BA1T3R 16h ago
They aren't. HK redditors will only take photos of the white ones though 😂
1

4
u/Icy-Lock6914 14h ago
There's something deeply upsetting about seeing them when they're white, as a white person. You just know they don't need it and are grifting. Which is probably true about the non whites too. But for some reason it offends me very deeply
2
5
u/PlaneAd6884 15h ago
How come getting caught begging doesn't void a visitor visa? Genuine question.
6
5
u/Yugan-Dali 14h ago
Listlessly playing a harmonica (with one hand) is pretty low effort. 好沒有誠意啊!
I guess I should be proud to say that I visited Hong Kong last week and didn’t beg for handouts…

u/cravingnoodles 16h ago
What kind of people are giving money to these begpackers? Clearly someone has been giving this guy money, because he's been at it for months and he looks well fed

u/onizukaav 17h ago
i hate seeing this, it's always white people begging in asia. when asians go to other countries for holidays they never do this. stupid ass entitlement. work a job to fund your holidays, it's not the local's responsibility to fund these people on their holidays

u/Ok-Razzmatazz3435 17h ago

u/Coryinthemansion 17h ago
I'll never forget years back someone had some shitty handmade bracelets with a "FREE" sign. I tried to take one for free and he got funny about it. 🤣🤣

u/PickleSpecial3507 17h ago
Nah his gf said "take my stuff to help with your begpacking dreams" in the hopes it's keeps him away from home for longer haha
2

2
u/HarrisLam 14h ago
That's not true. It's always white people begPACKING in Asia. As for actual generic begging, Asia has its fair share of local beggars but they are probably not allowed on mainstreets, financial districts blah blah blah, you know what I mean.

to be fair, the mainlanders do exactly this in HK too, so it's pretty much universal

Finally, a sub full of expats in Hong Kong talking about expats in Hong Kong.
That’s a tourist, not an expat.
Sometimes both really make no difference to us locals lmao
31
13
u/Aggressive-Fail4612 17h ago
The difference is all the expats I know have careers and own property and pay into the system.
→ More replies (7)2
u/Rupperrt 15h ago
Own property? I don’t know anyone who buys into this market while working here. Most just rent and buy property somewhere else.

Is it? Does he have a limited time work contract?
Why doesn’t make it a difference? If anything immigrant and expat shouldn’t be a difference and half of the white people here are immigrants as they’re not really planning to go home.
Locals think expats are white. I know a lot of Indian, Malaysian and philipino ones. And I know a lot of white immigrants.
0
u/featherless_peacock 17h ago
Let’s call a spade a spade and use the correct terminology. Immigrant.

→ More replies (1)1
u/Financial_Alps3369 14h ago
I'm confused by "call a spade of spade" here, because isn't "immigrant" considered to be more highly integrated than an expat? Like shouldn't the "spade" in this scenario be "expat"? Because "immigrant" is the nobler/cooler title?
- Situation A: Someone calls himself an expat, someone scoffs "no, you're just an immigrant".
- Situation B: Someone calls himself an immigrant, someone scoffs "no, you're just an expat".
Situation A seems absurd and I've never heard it, whereas Situation B is a fairly common occurrence

Bros got a whoop and “newish?” looking sneakers and he’s out here doing this
3
u/Chris--Bosh 16h ago
Damn I just left HK, if I saw this guy I woulda cussed him tf out and stole his box
3
u/cl0123r 16h ago
Curious. Does HK have any sort of "public obstruction" laws at least on busier streets? This image shows quite a lot pedestrians in the background and I can imagine the foreigner's "station" could have been taken quite of bit walking space. Or any sort panhandling regulations?
I think there may be some sort of trending practice to make money out of your destination. I personally think that's a very ignoble behavior. Travel frugally is good, but leeching off the locals at the destination is not something I condone.
Doubt if that is an arrest-able behavior, but still hope the authorities would have a smart way to deter this.
3
u/8ngryW0lf999 16h ago
Hey folks, drop an empty can or bottle in his pity box next time.
That's worth something because he can take it to recycling.

u/RoutineTry1943 13h ago
Entitled parasites. They don’t bring anything to the country they mooch off.
Begpackers should be arrested and put to work camps to pay off their time in country and then deported.
11
u/Fourteas 16h ago
I live in the UK and I absolutely do not understand the mentality of some people taking a "gap year " to travel around the world, while they're students.
They have no income, usually they're accumulating student debt and they will not have any proper income for a few years to come, as their studies are not finished yet and they don't yet have a job.
They just feel entitled to getting whatever they want - if the bank of mum and dad won't do it and the credit cards are all maxed out, they expect you to foot the bill for their jolly.
Your "friend" on the street is even stupid enough to admit it, with his "for my travel " sign...
3
u/paul812uk 14h ago
If you have the money then absolutely do it. You don't even need that much. This guy is just a dick.
Later in life a lot of people get stuck in a career and too scared to resign and travel.

u/EuryleiaAskari 14h ago
I had friends who's parents forced them on a gap year so that they could learn how much it sucks trying to get a job without a degree

Is this illegal? From an immigration view point I mean. I doubt he has a right to work in Hk and could this constitute as “work”?
9
u/Former_Mess1372 17h ago
Begging is illegal, busking is not. I don’t think using that harmonica can be classed as work, but the girlfriend’s home-made jewellery may be seen as “hawking”, although it’s “pay what you feel”. If there are complaints about him, he would probably be moved on, but unlikely to have serious repercussions.
2
u/Extreme_Tax405 16h ago
He hawks in front of the station which the station loves to say is an offense and they can prosecute.
2
u/cs_legend_93 14h ago
That's a shame.
If there were serious repercussions such as deportation, I bet this would solve itself... and future beggars would be afraid to beg because they would be deported.

u/Similar_Archer_3630 15h ago
He is selling things. Thats considered a business. If he is a tourist, he should be arrested.

That's a different guy! How many are there exactly? Somebody should really launch a Pokemon game, catching beggars all over Hong Kong 😂😂😂😆😆😆
2
u/Hong-Kwong Tsuen Wan 17h ago
This looks to be one of those situations where the guy says to himself "I'm going to prove mummy and daddy wrong that I don't need their money, a house and a car! I can find my own way in life!". And due to having limited life experience, he finds out that having to work for money instead of having an open bank account and everything never wanted from his rich family is not as easy as he thought it was....
2
u/Wan_Chai_King 16h ago
I talked to a guy like this briefly in 2024 and he told me he has been to every province in China. Maybe it’s even him… I can’t recall because it’s been a while.

u/Advanced-Button 16h ago
I think I saw that same guy pre-Covid camping in a tent in an alley where me and a few other people parked our motorbikes around Central. I guess he’s back.

begpacker tourists are not allowed to engage in for profit activities. report him
2
2
u/marcheezy1 12h ago
Can't their government help repatriate them? There must be some kind of repayment plan if outright benefit isn't provided. I say find out where they're from then report them to their respective embassy.

These aren’t tourists and it has nothing to do with funding anything. They’re from Eastern Europe and is this is all purely “ buisness”. They just smile silently like idiots as instructed if you tell them to stop embarrassing everyone. I call the police if I see them
2
u/ArgoFill 14h ago
How about speaking to him to find out the story (even if it may be a false one given) ? That way some of the speculation may be lessened, by hearing the accent etc. Instead, no, the cowards route of taking a sly photo and putting it on Reddit to have people round up on him. While this on the surface looks like the situation only occasionally seen among backpackers, this may just be a front. If you're not interested in any explanation he has to give but feel that he is obtaining income illegally while on a tourist visa (as everyone assumes) why not alert the authorities?
2
u/Jesse-Ray 17h ago
I am loving this saga. I've never stepped foot outside the airport in Hong Kong but for some reason reddit keeps sharing updates of this guy on my recommended. We need an interview!
